I ordered the green Chile cheeseburger with route 66 fries. The portion sizes are huge and it was so tasty. Loved the route 66 fries. It's fries smothered in queso and green Chiles. Decided to stop and try this diner while passing by from a roadtrip, huge disappointment! The only star this place gets is for the decorations as it does give that old school diner feel, as for service and food I wish I could give it a negative star. We came in and they told us there was a 20 min wait to be seated which we were okay with, once seated our waitress took about 10 min to come and take our drinks by which at that time we were already decided on what to order. We ordered our food at 1:25pm and at 1:43 pm the waitress came by the table again and asked if we were ready to order in which we told her we had already ordered?? And she said oh well yea it's gonna be a 45 min wait because we are crazy busy. Mind you that place was not that busy (will insert pictures while at the restaurant) and walked away. In my opinion if that was the case she would have told us before ordering. Our food came out at 2:16 pm and it was a huge disappointment.. We were in Albuquerque thinking of where to eat as usual and just decided to go to an old reliable restaurant we enjoy. As many times as I've been here I've only tried a handful of things. Today I decided to have a GCCB! Before I tell you how disappointed I was let me say that the service was outstanding! Burgers are expensive here. Disappointed that 66 Diner removed the chicken and dumplings from their menu; it was my favorite dish! I stopped by today and settled for a meatloaf sandwich and cup of soup instead. The soup was bland, but the meatloaf sandwich was decent. I didn't have a milkshake on this visit, but while sitting at the counter I could see them being made and they look top-notch. I was so disappointed when I came in with my son, his girlfriend, granddaughter and niece to see how dirty it was. I wanted to leave but they begged me to stay. They were out of meatloaf (which is why we came in the first place). We sat at the counter because the wait was so long. This 50's style diner is a staple in ABQ, from what I understand. It's off of central and the parking lot is quite small, however, there is street parking available. They are still social distancing, so the capacity is smaller than normal. The waitstaff was friendly, even though they were working hard, as they appeared to be short-staffed, just like all businesses right now. I can't remember the last time I visited this diner. I almost forget why I stopped coming. My buddy really wanted a milkshake and well honestly so did I. I personally didn't want to hit up a fast food joint mainly because there are very few that I actually enjoy their milkshakes. So I said hey, why not here? Walking in we were immediately greeted. This place was an old school gas station on route 66 the first half of the 20th century. The restaurant, with some space added from the original gas station, has all kinds of road signs and other signs from the 1950's. They also have a huge collection of Pez dispensers on display. And a good juke box that I remember from the 1960's. Ready to take coins and play records. My wife and I joined their 66 Diner Club online and we were able to each get a free shake with our meal. An email from 66 Diner has to be shown to verify and they may take more than a day, so do it in advance of a visit. They have about 20 flavors of shakes. See their online menu for the flavors. Shakes made with real ice cream and come with a canister to complete about two glasses for each order. My wife said that her green chili potato soup was a bit spicy but good. Okra was good. Burger was typical of a fifties malt shop burger. Juicy, not dry at all. We asked for medium and our burgers were not quite medium but they tasted good. A four star burger. French fries were about average for a restaurant. Prices were average. No surprises there. Our waitress was pleasant and wore a 1950's type uniform for a malt shop. Fifties music played. 66 Diner, on Central at Sycamore, sticks out from the surrounding scenery, its art deco-inspired stucco facade playing into the Route 66 iconography that the restaurant seeks to embody. My party of three arrived just after they opened today, sitting at a booth in the front, by the counter. We ordered glasses of water, and my two guests also got chocolate shakes. To eat, I picked the tuna melt, upgrading my side to the "dinner salad" for an extra $2. Just to be safe, I also ordered a Frito Pie. The salad arrived first, a modest lettuce spring mix topped with two cherry tomatoes, two cucumber slices, and two halos of onion. The lettuce didn't seem particularly fresh; the stems on the leaves were turning brown. I doused on some Italian dressing and made the most of it. Next, the tuna melt. Served open-face, the top was covered in semi-melted cheese, dripping with grease. I dabbed it off and took a few bites. Under the cheese were some soggy tomato slices, and the tuna salad, on a damp piece of bread. The tuna salad was textureless, and the whole thing was wet and sloppy. (We later found out that the tuna salad had been made on a previous day.) I turned to the Frito Pie for salvation. The kitchen had topped it with plenty of lettuce/tomato/onion garnish, just the way I like it. The chile and beans tasted good with the chopped vegetables and crunchy Fritos. At the end, I wasn't really blown away by the food here. My guests liked their shakes, and I enjoyed the Frito Pie, but the dinner salad and the tuna melt were a bummer. When the waitress came to take our order, she told us that they were only serving breakfast items and motioned to the small section on the right (which consisted of 8 items). Okay...that would have been a good thing to mention BEFORE the customer goes through the entire menu. We decided on the divorciados and the pile up. Overall, both dishes were okay. The potatoes were undercooked (hard in the middle). All the other items were pretty mediocre and nothing about the dishes made it memorable. We like this diner and have been a couple times since moving here. Inside is kitschy and what you'd expect from a diner that's been around for a while. Service is good and we've always been satisfied with the food. My favorite part are the milkshakes! I'm always going to be down for a good milkshake and this place has really good hand-spun ones. Huge, too, so you can easily split one with someone (I don't, but that's me). We've actually made a couple attempts to come back but have had trouble figuring out the hours- they don't seem consistent or match what's online. We've driven by on days/times we were positive they'd be open, but weren't, and this has happened more than once (at different times and on different days, not like going the same day at the time time each attempt). Visited 66 Diner after wrapping up full day tournament a couple miles away at the convention center. Upon driving up, the outside decor catches your eye. When you walk in, you are transformed immediately to a 50's theme diner with a juke box, an Elvis exhibit and many other interesting touches, like the extensive Pez dispenser collection. A friend had recommended the 66 Burger which comes with cheese, Hatch green chili & bacon. Upgraded the fries to 66 fries drenched in cheese & Hatch chili also. Before the main course, we split a Frito pie among the table and it was a hit with everybody. Opted to keep the lettuce, onions & tomatoes on the side and just order it with the chili & cheese. It'd been years since having this! The rest of the orders at the table included the NM green chili stew (which was recommended but not great), a couple regular cheeseburger with fries and a kids meal with grilled cheese and fries. The 66 Burger & fries was really good and I enjoyed every bite even though the Hatch chili was spicier than I expected.
