Then sometime in February Conrad texted me about a promotion they had for a tune-up and maintenance service. Happy to accept and Leo came and performed the verification. I almost fell for this trick. But as he pressed me to make an appointment, he asked me what kind of a/c unit I have, which is an odd question for someone who has worked on our equipment previously. I then asked him directly, "Have I done business with you before?" No response. So I asked again. No response. It turns out, I have no record of doing business with Conrad Heating & Cooling, because we have never done business with this company! I told him I would not be scheduling anything with Conrad. This representative didn't even know what type of unit we have, confirming there was no prior relationship. The familiar tone of the initial text was a deliberate tactic to create a false sense of trust. And I find that very offensive! I'd encourage other homeowners, especially seniors who are frequently targeted by this kind of approach, to read unsolicited texts carefully. If a company implies they've worked with you before, ask specific questions before agreeing to anything. In this case, the deception became obvious very quickly.

And Company 2 (the one offering a "free furnace if it snows on Xmas" or some crap like that) was happy to promise us a new furnace in a week, have us sign for a loan, and then ghosted us. I called all over town. No one had a furnace and I was being told I would have to wait from Oct -- Jan to hopefully get a furnace install. Four months with no heat?!? The Efficiency receptionist was empathic, listened, and commiserated with me on my furnace woes. Then she got to work, moving schedules around to get me a quick estimate, and 2 weeks later, we have heat!!! One of the nicest touches about this place, they text you to remind you of your service. Then they text you an introduction to who will be coming to your home, including the technician's picture and a little bit about them. And a GPS tracker to chart their little truck's progress to your house. Super classy, and it put me at ease. Everyone was on time, super personable. When the install ran a little long with retrofitting electrical, it was of no concern to the crew. They kept working and stayed at it 12 hours until the job was done. Then the tech took the time to show us what he did, test everything, and even stuck around to ask us if we had any questions. No doubt about it, Efficiency has customer service DIALED IN. Additionally, we needed a garage fan installed in gable of garage for airflow. The team did all this, and even came back a few days later to confirm fan louvers were closing as intended when fan turns off (for a moment, looked like they weren't working properly so we let Sun Glow know). They also had a plumber come out to do a quick fix on a bathroom faucet that had gone askew when Electricians were installing new wall outlet. Sun Glow wasn't the least expensive of all quotes we got, but as new and first time homeowners, you have to make a decision to invest in your house for yourselves in the now and for potential sale in the future. They had good representation and presence on Yelp, Google, and Angi's listing, showing longevity and commitment to tasks and efforts for quality service. So, yeah, we went with Sun Glow and now we have the satisfaction that things were done to code, and we know if anything did go wrong (related in scope of work) they'd be sure to come out and fix it. The communication from first contact through completion of our new AC installation was excellent -- we always knew who was coming out and when to expect them, with notifications arriving both by email and text, and polite requests to confirm each appointment. All the personnel at Specialty have been so helpful. Nicole in the office answered questions and took careful notes. Eric came out and listened to our concerns and answered a lot of picky detailed questions. He did a great job of explaining the challenges of installing AC in an older house, which helped us make a good decision about which type of system to install. And after the installation, Eric came to check air flow in every room of the house, showed us how to optimize that and gave us tips and advice for using the system. As for the installation itself, we were very happy with both Bailey and Devin, the pair who carried it out. Bear Electric did great work to support the installation. And finally, some days after installation, Skylar came out to clean all the ducts, including our dryer duct! We really appreciated both the careful, detailed service and everyone's friendly, professional attitudes. At the same time, we are all talking about rising costs and how we're paying more than twice what we used to just a couple of years ago. Companies like Specialty Heating & Cooling are contributing to this problem with pricing practices that, in my view, take advantage of customers. Last week, I noticed an unusual noise coming from our furnace. I had a good idea of what it might be, as I dealt with the same issue when we lived in a different home. I called Specialty Heating & Cooling and scheduled an appointment. The technician arrived on time, and within five minutes, the diagnostics confirmed exactly what I suspected. That's when I was told there was a $189 diagnostic fee--something no one had mentioned when I scheduled the visit. I paid it, but I made it clear that this had not been disclosed. The technician said he would call after the Thanksgiving weekend with a repair estimate. On Monday, he contacted me and asked for my email. When I requested the total cost of the repair, the quote was $1,186.43. I asked for an explanation of how they justified charging nearly $1,200 for a part that retails for about $142, installs with three screws, and takes less than 30 minutes to replace. Unfortunately, no clear explanation was provided. If their quote had been anywhere near reasonable--say, up to $500--I would have approved the repair immediately. I spent a total of 15 minutes removing and reinstalling that part. The entire process required removing and replacing only three 1/4-inch screws. Given how quick and simple the job was, I'm struggling to understand why the charge was so high. This level of work does not justify the price that I was quoted. However, at this price, I strongly suggest exploring alternatives before calling Specialty Heating & Cooling, unless you're comfortable paying far more than what the job is worth.
