Great experience. I had the Carolina crab cake from the lunch menu and it was amazing. Both sauces and even the rice were excellent. The location is great and the courtyard we sat in was beautiful. Don't be discouraged to sit outside on a hot day because the shade, breeze and fans make the outdoor seating very comfortable. The reason I'm giving five stars is because not only was the food good but the prices are very reasonable. A one star place for sure. Where do I begin.... If this is fine dining in Charleston, then this town is in deep trouble from a culinary perspective. Ordered 4 items, the best item was the queen salad which is a no brainer, easy thing. I say best, but keep I mind that is just relative to the rest of the meal. On its own, the queen salad was nothing better or more special than a salad that can be made at your home. Again, keep fine dining and price in mind when I make these comments. At Applebees prices, all would be perfect! That is not the case here for sure! A few tip-offs to watch out for. 1) Ordered the fried green tomatoes. Came to the table within a minute of ordering (never a good sign when expecting freshly prepared). As soon as this happened, we expected a poor experience to follow and our expectations were spot on. Tomatoes plated as if created on the spot by chef but clearly pre-made, heat lamped and just ready to go. 2) crispy duck was terrible. Not crispy at all!! Skin was brown, but soggy. Meat done, but very tough. Again, obviously pre made and just heated to bring to table. Both the duck and out other entree covered in a sweet sauce. Another cheap trick to mask poor quality. 3) never were we asked "how is everything"? That lack of those three words while dining at what is supposed to be "fine dining" speaks volumes! That's a huge hint to anyone in the restaurant business! Always ask that question!! 4) oblivious to water refills (I get that staffing is tough but this is a basic) Will not return. Not the best value for your money. Portions are larger than life, but the quality is lacking. Also, if you like sweet dishes, this is a place for you. The shrimp and grits had a sweet BBQ sauce, the rice in the jambalaya was tough and semi-sweet as well. Overall, not a great twist to traditional dishes. We were directed to go to 82 Queen by a friend who enthusiastically told us "They have the best shrimp and grits I've ever tasted!" We came a little over an hour early for our 7:00 reservation, thinking we would have a cocktail and perhaps appetizer at the bar while we waited. The hostess said that was perfectly fine and that they would come get us at the time of our reservation. Walking through the courtyard to the bar I immediately appreciated the beautiful ambience of the place, from the butterfly-backed chairs tithe cobbled pathways and street signs directing you to different parts of the restaurant. I also couldn't help noticing the number of empty tables and found it a little strange that the hostess didn't at least offer to seat us early. Service at the bar was average but not exceptional. I immediately saw that ordering an appetizer would be a mistake, as everything looked heavy and likely to rob us of our appetites for dinner, rather than stave our hunger for a little while. Still, we ordered the single crab cake to split. The crabcake was perfectly fine, but nothing to write home about. The hostess never came to get us at the time of our reservation, so we went to them. Once again I'll mention how many tables were open and that they did not seem exceptionally busy. Dinner was...disappointing. I ordered the gumbo, which seemed to be more of a skillet dish than the stew I was anticipating. My mother had a Caesar salad topped with fried oysters. Both of us were greatly disappointed with the oysters, which were slightly chewy and fried in a much-too-heavy batter. We also got an appetizer portion of the barbecue shrimp and grits, remembering what our friend had said. First, I can't imagine how this is considered an appetizer. Grits are very filling and not so easily shared. Second, there wasn't much barbecue flavor to the dish, except a slight sweetness to the shrimp, which were themselves very good shrimp. Third, the grits were dry as dirt and over-cooked. I was horribly disappointed, given the expectations we'd built over this dish. Our friend who recommended them came here over a year ago, and I can't help thinking there must be a different chef. Our service during the meal was also unexceptional, and at wont point I actually poured some of my water in my mother's glass, as the waiter had let it run completely dry, in spite of passing by us to go through the doorway every five minutes--without making eye contact. Just disappointing, I'm afraid. With so much great food to be had in Charleston, I doubt we'll be coming back here to give them a second chance on another visit. read more

The atmosphere is amazing. This place was perfect for a romantic evening, but I was somewhat surprised at the lack of clientele on a Friday at 6:45. The service was outstanding. I wish I could remember our server's name, but he did an excellent job, aside from the dishes recommended, but not sure if that can be placed on him. The food was disappointing. BYO Old Bay. Shrimp & Grits: The shrimp was a bit over cooked; the grits were a bit dry and lacking a bit of bitter and seasoning; the bacon in the dish was the best part with good texture and flavor. Fried Green Tomatoes: again, no flavor. I prefer a lighter, flour breading. I couldn't taste the actual tomato. Crab Cakes: the server said 90-95% jumbo lump. I am still searching for a lump. It was very bread-y, lacked seasoning, and the crab was all shredded up. I smelled crab, but never tasted it. Also, no lemon wedges are served with the dish. It isn't required, but I needed it to add flavor.... We split the bill 3 ways with 2 apps, a bottle of wine and 2 slices of pecan pie. $55 plus tip. read more

Killer southern cuisine. Sit outside if you can. Stopped here during our trip to Charleston. It's a trio of buildings surrounding an open air courtyard. When you first walk in, there's a long alley that leads back to the host-stand. We were first seated in the beautiful outdoor courtyard, but it started to rain just after we sat down, so they moved us to a very quiet set of tables upstairs. The fried green tomatoes with house made white cheddar pimento cheese were amazing. Crispy on the outside, moist on the inside. Absolutely delicious. The shrimp and grit bites are cute little double stacks of a fried jumbo shrimp on top of a square of fried grits, with a bit of red pepper jam. Loved the concept, the presentation and especially the taste. Our shared entree was the chicken and waffles. An herbed and fried breast of chicken on top of a beautiful waffle with pecan and maple syrup. The chicken was SO juicy and the whole plate was superb. The service was excellent and left us with no complaints. 82 Queen is probably some of the best southern food available in Charleston. Don't miss out! read more

The place is good. You have to book in advance to get a courtyard table even for a Monday dinner. Some recommended dishes by others are overrated, including the Queens Salad, which is nothing special, and the Jamalaya is just so so. The crab cake is good though.Queen's. One surprise is that you have to pay extra $$ if pay credit card, that is very ridiculous. They did not say anyting before ordering that the prices on the menu are for cash payment. My wife and I were visiting Charleston and went to 82 Queen for our anniversary. We had heard great things about this place and were very excited to eat here. I'm not sure what was going on in the kitchen, but we waited for at least an hour for our entrees. (The guests at the table next to us arrived after we did and finished their meal before we got our food). We were hungry and frustrated so we told our server to forget our entrees and just bring us the check. She was apologetic , brought us the check for our appetizers (which were nothing to write home about) and brought our entrees with to-go containers. 82 Queen comped the entrees which was a decent gesture. But when we got back to our hotel, we had a couple of bites and were disappointed. Mediocre food. Horrible kitchen service. Expensive prices. That's a bad trifecta. read more

Meh. Service was attentive and friendly. She recommended the she crab soup and crab cakes, but we did overhear other servers giving the same recommendations so it's clearly a narrative they tell. I get she crab soup whenever I'm in town and this was maybe the worst I've had - the server mentioned it hasn't changed since their opening in 1982, and unfortunately it tastes like it. Heavy roux (flour and butter) taste with the consistency of thick frosting. Both of us ate less than 25% of our soup cups. I had the fried green tomatoes, which came on a bed of grits with pimento cheese on top. They were okay at best. Not a whole lot of flavor, but they did come out hot. My date had the short ribs, which he enjoyed but I also thought lacked seasoning. The whole food experience seemed dated, but the servers and staff were all friendly and welcoming. 82 Queen has lots of potential to be a great restaurant. It has a charming location in the heart of downtown Charleston. Several small dining rooms make the place quiet and intimate. But we cannot taste ambience! We ordered the namesake Queen Salad and found a large salad (and I mean large enough to serve three people kind of large) made with what looks like triple-washed greens from the supermarket dressed in Krafts ranch dressing with shredded Cheddar and bacon bits-reminds me of salad bars from my college dining hall. The salad foreshadowed the rest of our meal which was very underwhelming. The bright spots of the whole evening was the she crab soup and the mini biscuits and salted butter. Even then I like the she crab soup at Elisabeth on 37th in Savannah better. The staff could have been trained a little better-our server left an unused wine glass on our table throughout the evening-he should have cleared it since only one of us was having wine. He also did not clear our used plates until our next course was served. Our dinner costs about the same as the one we had the previous night at The Ordinary but the differences between the two meals was like night and day. read more

The biscuits here are the real deal and the perfect start to any meal served hot with butter and jelly.....yum! Wife had salad, I had the caprasie salad, was ok. Did not order full meal because prices were out of this world. I had The scallops , 4, were $33.00! Our bill without a full meal was $73.00!!! We have dined at 82 Queen many many times over the years and have had some truly great experiences. Last night - not so. My message to the chef or manager or whomever was left in charge over the holiday week is that if you are not prepared to offer your usual quality food with unapologetic service then simply do not take reservations. Spoiling a family moment together just to collect a few bucks is not the Southern way. Our family was sharing a rare moment together in Charleston with all three grown kids on Christmas break in town from three different cities and we wanted to enjoy a nice evening meal before saying our goodbyes the next day. Reservations at 82 Queen for five at seven. Without going into too much detail - the food was simply not up to par. Less than mediocre actually. Our server was keenly aware that we and most other patrons sitting near us were not happy. We overheard others voice their dissatisfaction. We were polite. We did not complain - though the waitress did on her own accord take my wife's meal off the ticket after seeing that she only took one bite of her almost impossible to cut chop. She crab soup was luke warm and separated. Salad greens were not fresh. Bouillabaisse was obviously microwaved leftovers. My daughter, who adores crabcakes, took only a couple bites of one. It was an embarrassing offering. Even without our complaining the waitress offered unsolicited rhetoric at every visit to our table ranging from it being the holiday week to the menu being changed over to the fact that they were slow and short staffed... No one cleaned their plate. We did box up our $250 leftovers - but we discarded them in a corner trash can on our walk to another establishment to have a wonderful dessert and night cap. read more

We had to go into the bar area to order, but that wasn't a problem. We ordered the shrimp and grits and the Queens Salad. The shrimp and grits had a bourbon BBQ sauce, and they were hands down the best shrimp and grits I have ever had. The Queens Salad was fresh and delicious!
