The first time we went to an 88 Bao Bao was the one in Dublin, and we remembered really liking the restaurant so we were super excited to find one opened in Concord too! So many things look good on the menu - we went with the pork xlb, pork pan fried buns, and boiled pork and cabbage dumplings. Everything was delicious but be aware that the flavors of their xlb do differ from places like din tai fung. The pork flavor in all the dumplings and buns was strong so you'll love it if you like pork. We would love to come back and try out the noodles in the future! Visiting family in the Bay area and 88 Bao Bao just happened to be around the corner and highly rated so we popped in for lunch! This busy little plaza on a busy intersection in Concord means plenty of foot traffic for this restaurant. Inside it's super humble and counter order. Or you can grab a table and fill out an order on a paper slip and pay up front. They'll find you by the number on a table stand. We sat by the glassed in kitchen area where you'll find the staff hard at work on your meal. The pork-crab XLB were served up nicely hot and the beef roll was outstanding. A crispy, not greasy scallion pancake wrapped around thin-sliced beef with cilantro and hoisin sauce, delish! And the shao mei were quite good, 12 to a serving. Overall I really liked this quick-serve Asian restaurant. They dabble in some non-Chinese items so it's like a greatest hits menu. I have always seen this place when I am in the plaza. I decided to drop by here for a late lunch after some errands. It was a little after the lunch rush so fairly empty when I came in. I was given a menu and a pen. I marked what I wanted and indicated I was to dine in so I was given a table number. I ordered the grilled squid and beef noodle soup. The grilled squid was very sweet. I guess I should have asked what the preparation was. The squid itself was cooked nicely and wasn't tough at all. It was just the terikayi-like sauce that made it a bit overwhelming. Luckily there are condiments at the table and I added a little chili oil to cut through the sweetness. As for the beef noodle soup, it was just okay. There were 3 thin slices of brisket and a couple bokchoy stems. The broth itself was decent, but nothing to rave about. I was expecting chunky and more gelatinous pieces of meat. I'll give it another try another time and perhaps try out the dumplings. Otherwise, items are really expensive. I spent almost $40 for those two food items and a drink just for myself. I was excited to see this was opening up! It's in the same plaza as Trader Joe's, so it's very convenient for us with plenty of easy parking. It's a small chain with 5 locations. The next closest location is Dublin and I saw that that location had great reviews and plenty of people in a local FB foodie group I'm in were excited for this nearby location to open! The menu features dumplings galore! We saw that initial reviews for this location said to hold off on the XLB, so we didn't order that dish time. We'll wait until they get into the rhythm and shake out the new restaurant jitters. We tried the Beef Rolls, Chowmein Noodles, Chili Oil Wontons, and steamed leak, pork, and shrimp dumplings. This was a lot of food for the 3 of us (2 adults and a preschooler)! The portions here are generous! My husband has been back with just our son and just got the chowmein and a dumpling order and still had so much leftovers. The chowmein especially is a large order which is great. Our son loves noodles, so this is a must-order for us. We both really liked the Wontons in chili oil so we'll definitely be ordering that again too. We thought it was good, but not the best thing ever. Nothing is a must-try, but we are super appreciative to have this in the area and will certainly be ordering from here often! I had tried the Dublin location a couple years ago so was on the fence about trying again from the chain. However there aren't that many dumpling places around here so figured why not. You will be given a menu and pen to place order and pay at front counter. Then you will be given a number for your table so they can bring the dishes as they are ready. It's a fairly small place so if you came with someone, have them sit down at a table to save a spot while you order. It's a fairly efficient systen. The place is clean, including the bathroom. However the food was just so-so. While there was plenty of soup in the pork buns and xiao long bao, the flavor isn't the Shanghainese pork flavor you expect. The beef rolls were ok, just a bit bland. Since we were at Dumpling 85 in San Ramon recently it's hard not to compare and their rolls had a ton more veggies and more flavorful beef. The fried rice was more fragarent and tasty than I remember. The siu mai was ok, small but plenty of meat. Overall it was similar to our Dublin experience so it's consistent for the chain. Really really happy to see a 88BB opened in Concord! We were excited to try it today but honestly were a bit disappointed with the food. Everything -- food, service, ambience -- was just OK here. Food: Very mediocre. We ordered 3 classic dishes: XLB, Shanghainese chow mein, and braised string beans. - XLB was too doughy especially on top, ok on juice, but the meat lacked flavor and tenderness 3/5 - Shanghainese noodles was too oily and too plain, in both flavor and ingredients. Yes I know I opted for no meat but usually there's more green onions and simply more flavors. 3/5 - Braised green beans was disappointing. It was not crunchy and tasted 'old'. They either used old green beans or the beans were refried one too many times; lacked flavor even though they piled the garlic 1/5 - As this is a semi-self service place, there isn't a lot of service to be expected here. You walk in, order from the cashier (who is smack in the middle when you walk in), grab that number and find a table. Then get your own water, and more napkins or to-go boxes near the cash register as needed. I'm indifferent as to self service or full service, but with this fast food style, there should be no/ less gratuity. 2/5 - Ambience is nice and clean as this place is brand new. So happy they have one in Concord after trying out the location in Vacaville! This location did not disappoint! Went by here and wanted to try everything but the tummy could only have so much in one sitting :) The inside is ideal for casual dining with small parties. You order and pay when you come in, and they'll bring everything out within 10-20 minutes. You can see the chefs prepping the dishes for the most part making for an interesting dining experience. Would I come back here? Not as my first choice. It's easy to order, the menu is straight forward, the staff moves quickly, but the theatrics of it all cloud the quality of the food The food itself isn't that amazing. The cucumbers didn't have flavor but they also weren't that fresh, crunchy bite you were hoping for. The XLB didn't have that punch of broth you want to taste in your mouth - it was pretty mild which is disappointing. The shaomai quality was lacking, also didn't have that burst of flavor that made me want to eat a second one. The fried beef rolls were pretty good. Actually, my favorite part of the meal. The chili wontons were decent but didn't have that spicy bite you usually look for. The bbq pork buns were minimally filled - one bite and the filling was gone and you were left with bbq pork stained buns and no flavor. The ambiance was modern, inviting, clean and well organized. You can eat inside or dine out on their patio as well. I don't know if it was an off day. If you serve Pork Lumpia (6) serve the sauce. Give either vinegar or sweet chili sauce if nothing else. Serve the food correctly prior sending it off to DoorDash, the Pan Fried Pork Bun (6)is more like a pork soup dumpling (see pictures). First bite got all over my coat, and it's pretty bland. Both this and the lumpia taste like they were microwaved and/or quickly fried. The Shanghai Chowmein was overly oily. Lacked almost any flavor through the oil but was a decent portion. Try Teapot if you're looking for something similar and far better quality that has actual flavor. These three items with tip was $57 which is robbery. read more

It is a blessing to have friends who are foodies and have tried different restaurants . They suggested 88 Bao Bao and when we drove to the location, we were surprised to see it was located in a shopping center that has a Trader Joe's and a Peet's Coffee. We never noticed this restaurant, however our friends raved about the food at 88 Bao Bao's and we were glad we got a chance to try the food at this restaurant . What you will notice is that every dish is prepared fresh. This is a small restaurant so you can see the cooks getting the orders ready. The atmosphere in the restaurant is comfortable and great place to meet friends. 88 Bao Bao has several dishes that stood out like their Pan Fried Pork Buns. It is like a delicious giant soup dumpling. We mixed the bottles on the table of garlic soy sauce, vinegar and chili paste together to taste. We used this as a dipping sauce for the Pan Fried Pork Buns after we drank the soup inside the bun . Initially, when you eat the Pan Fried Pork Bun, place it on the soup ladle so it catches the soup or you can tilt the Pan Fried Pork Buns on its side so soup doesn't flow out. Another dish that stood out were the pork sui mai. Each order is eight pieces of pork sui mai. The flavor is delicious. The grilled squid was ok, but I wouldn't order it again. The cucumber salad was crispy and delicious and I would order again. The Beef Soup had a savory broth, chewy thick noodles and several thin slices of beef. Worth ordering again.. The crab and pork sui mai was delicious, but didn't stand out in flavor as too different from the regular pork sui mai. . It was made so the crab was on top and inside the noodle was the pork. I would not recommend ordering regular pork sui mai AND the crab pork sui mai unless you just love pork sui mai. The beef roll was delicious, but not memorable. There are so many more dishes to try so we will return. We have a variety of very good noodle and dumpling places we can visit, but the choice of where we go now depends on what we are craving in terms of how the food is prepared. This is a wonderful position to be in. So why travel to Walnut Creek or even Oakland when we have several dumpling and noodle places right here in Concord. There are definitely some good dishes here, but I think because the XLBs didn't do it for me, I have to rate this a 3. The crab XLB had no crab taste because the crab meat was sitting on top and it wasn't incorporated into the meat. The soups in the XLB also had like a vinegar taste. The soy sauce that we pour ourselves into the ginger was way too sour with vinegar. It almost had no soy sauce mixed in. The beef noodle soup was really good though. Soup had a lot of flavor and I enjoyed the hint of sweetness in it. Rice noodles were pretty good too. I've never been to an 88 Bao Bao before but my friends told me that before this location opened, they're drive all the way to Dublin for it, so I expected good things! Even with these high expectations and being a bit of a dumpling connoisseur myself, I actually found that 88 Bao Bao met my expectations and would be somewhere I'd go again for a dumpling fix. My hungry party of 6 was quickly seated during lunch, although the restaurant was pretty full around 12pm on a Sunday. We ordered the classic xiao long bao, garlic green beans, beef rolled pancake, sheng jian bao, shrimp dumplings (har gow) and pork and shrimp shiu mai. I found the shrimp dumplings and shrimp shiu mai not bad but unremarkable, but everything else was pretty tasty. The XLB were juicy, piping hot and delicious with the provided sauces and ginger. The sheng jian bao (Shanghai style pan fried bao) were also filled with pork soup and artfully done. The inside of the restaurant is modern and cute, and it's a very comfortable ambiance. I've been going to Dumpling Hours in Walnut Creek, and they charge $15 for the same amount of dumplings. The soup dumplings were pretty good. I've had better, but for the price these are not bad at all. The skin was a little thicker, but honestly it did a good job of making sure it didn't break when picking it up. Make sure to add the vinegar- there's two different ones at the table (one was very vinegary, the other was sweeter and slightly spicy). The highlight was the beef roll. Great texture of the fry, and good size. Will definitely get this again. The seasoned beef was ok- a little tough, but not bad. It says on the menu its served cold, but it was REALLY cold. Super friendly and helpful staff (my kid has many allergies and they were super kind and helpful) and great food! Very hearty and comforting and reminds me of home. It was so tasty we forgot to take photos until halfway through our meal haha. We got the pan fried dumplings (生煎包), the pork XLB, the leek chive and shrimp dumplings, and the garlic cucumbers.
