I was really excited when this place opened up. It has been so many things over time, I hope that this place is here to stay. One night we wanted some good (meaning real) chinese food and we had dinner at the Happy Garden Chinese resturant (whole other review) and felt like some dessert. They were open late and the place always looked so cool and trendy from the outside and always lots of people. I figured it was time to try. We got the cheesecake, wow it was great, creamy and dense with the perfect cheesecake flavour. I hate light cheesecakes, this one was sweet and creamy and heavy! I could eat this every day (wow I would get so fat!) But seriously if your gonna splurge on dessert, go here. I like them much better that the other tea shop up the block since they are really nice to english speaking people and very friendly to teach. Hey just because I'm not chinese doesn't mean that I can't learn and I'm not willing to try. Just be nice and try talking to us, we don't bite! lol I mean if I'm eating your food that means that I can't wait to hear from you about what else is delicous! Got my birthday cake this year from there, when we got the cheesecake they had a beautiful really artistic cake in the fridge. They showed me the book and I ordered 3 days in advance. Mine had chocolate sauce on the outside and it made it so much better (chocolate lover here) I have tried some of the food, but it can be a hit or miss depending on your tastes. The sandwiches are cheap but very light and not filling and they take off the crust....why???? Now the hot food is good...if you don't know what to get ask for a suggestion, everything they suggested has been good. I really liked the Sauteed Beef in Brown Sauce and the Satay Beef Noodle Soup, at 3.25 it is a steal, I add some hot sauce and it really stands out. I can't wait to try the rest of the dishes. After passing by 88 Canteen several times, I decided to stop in today and see if it was any good. The decor is nice; modern and new with the essence of your typical Chinese bakery. The menu on the board is all in Chinese, which is a bit intimidating if you don't read Chinese, but don't worry, their take-out menu has English in it. They have the usual Chinese bakery breads along with tapioca drinks and fruit slushes. They also have hot foods varying from Taiwanese pork chop over rice to HK styled noodles. My mom and I ordered the Taiwanese style meat sauce over rice and the Taiwanese style pork chop over rice. The portions were generous, but the actual food wasn't very good. It wasn't very Taiwanese at all. The meat sauce was way too salty and the pickled vegetables on the side were also too salty. The pork chop was okay, but definitely not what I expected. When I hear Taiwanese pork chop over rice, I think of something similar to what they have at Gu-Shine or Lu's 66. I'm not sure if this place is even run by Taiwanese people. 88 Canteen serves the idea of Taiwanese dishes, but does not have the essence of good Taiwanese grub. I was sorely disappointed and didn't even finish half of my lunch because of the amount of sodium. If you're looking for Taiwanese food in Flushing, save yourself a trip to this place and go to Gu-Shine or 66 Lu's or Red Chopstick. Maybe one day I'll come back here...when my curiosity brings me to try some other dishes. But for now, I'll spend my money elsewhere. read more

Sister to Tea Shop 168 & Bakery with an almost identical layout, 88 Canteen serves some simple sandwiches, noodle soups, noodle, rice dishes, and hot/cold drinks. All food is made to order so the wait can be a while if it's crowded. It is more of a bakery/cafe than a restaurant that I recommend taking your order to go, since there are only about 6-7 tables. It was nearing lunchtime, so I wanted something with a little substance so I got the Beef Chow Fun ($5.25). My order was placed and a receipt with a number was given. Waiting patiently, my order came out in about 5 minutes in a styrofoam container. The noodles were soft and slippery, not clumping/sticking together, but at the sacrifice of being ever so slightly greasy. The chow fun here is pretty good, but the beef was scarce with only about 8-10 thin pieces of piece with the majority of it all flat noodles. Tasty though I now know why I only paid $5.25, no tax. I'll probably come again to try their Spam & Egg sandwich, listed as Luncheon Meat with Egg Sandwich ($1.75) and their HK Style Fried Instant Noodles that looked delicious! For the price, the food is very cheap. Ingredients are minimal and simplistic making for a tolerable meal though nothing mouth watering. read more

Food is inexpensive and decent enough, but service and cleanliness is the big issue. I was there with another adult and two small children. We ordered 4 full dishes, even though the kids don't eat much. One of the dishes was a noodle soup and when we asked for a small bowl so my six year old could put a little of the soup and noodles to cool down rather than eat from a large steaming bowl, they snapped back "you shouldn't share, everyone needs to order their own." We told them that we did order 4 dishes for 4 people and she walked over to inspect the number of people at the table before, begrudgingly, giving us a small styrofoam bowl. With two small children, of course, they would have to use the restroom. It smelled terrible, like they don't bother cleaning it ever. Makes you wonder what the kitchen is like. It has a wide selection of rice, noodles and soup noodles, and snacks - we liked the classics like Beef Chow Hor Fun, the Chicken w. Rice Cake, XO Sauce, and baked Portugese Chicken over Rice - all of them reasonably priced vs. other similar cafe along the Main Street/Kissena Blvd. Portion size, especially the rice dishes, is on the small size - okay for average person but not for 2 people sharing. For a small extra charge, one can "up"-sized it just like McD's and old Wendies ... The noodles & wonton soup is overcooked & marginal in our opinion, avoid it or go to a dedicated noodles restaurant instead. We come to this place mostly for picking up our take-outs, first calling in to try to avoid a long wait, as it is often on the slow side when it is busy. There is aout 8 tables for self-service seating, after pickup up the order from the counter. The regular or small sized coffee or tea cup is on the small size and the Bubble Tea's "strength" is on the weak side to our taste. I come here almost everyday to buy lunch. They have the best curry beef over white rice, tiny egg tarts, beef noodle soup and salty fish fried rice. You can also purchase delicious bubble teas here! The prices are CHEAP! I am not their biggest fan in terms of their customer service , but they do get super busy every time I'm there. So maybe that's why it's not the best? Just a note, it may be hard to find street parking there in the afternoon. They do not have a private parking lot. read more

They give you A LOT of bubbles and they're pretty damn chewy lol 2. Their baked meat sauce with spaghetti isn't comparable to 168 bakeries. I like 168's a lot more but i guess that's just based on preference. 3. My boyfriend and I love their rice vermicelli noodles with peanut/ sweet soy sauce. They give a HUGE portion and it's only $2.95. Can't beat that . Plus, they give a lot of sauce so it makes it super yummy 4. I've tried a couple of their rice/ noodles dishes and they're all pretty good. They give a good amount to fill you up. Many times, my boyfriend and I will have leftovers for our next meal.
