We became suspicious that the local BMW service center was ripping us off. First, they recommended a brake system flush and fluid replacement (it turns out, this was two years after having it done there and only putting 5000 miles per year on our car). Then they noticed a leak in the car's rear differential. They charged $400 for diagnostics and recommended a $2000 intervention. Finally, they suggested that we needed two new tires. We went to the Autobahn Service Center for a second opinion. They cleaned the area around the rear differential, told us to drive the car for a while and come back to check it again. Guess what- there was no leak! They also said that the tires did not need to be replaced yet. Thank you for your honesty and integrity. We will be Autobahn Service Center customers for the life of our car. read more

Bought tires elsewhere and had them shipped there for installation and balancing. Appears to be a proper garage. Multi-generation family-owned business with nice friendly service. Things like mounting tires, or filter change isn't a true indication of knowledgeable quality service, but the 4 stars is just my positive experience and impression. Will consider them again if needed work on the VW and BMW. The installer torqued the wheels, then the floor supervisor doubled checked. That is just being conscientious. read more

Reason it's not 5 stars? Read to end... Most recently came for an inspection after i'd been told by another garage that my brakes were gone and rotors needed replacing, and this is three years after getting rotors replaced Stefan said naah, fine for another year at least. Started coming in 1990s with a radiator was overheating and I was cringing at the cost of a new one. Willi, Stefan's father, said naah, just a new hose - $12, please. Since then I've had I guess five cars, all used, and all serviced here on and off over the years. Cheap? No. Honest? Yes. And when i was in for the inspection started talking to another customer there - he'd been coming here (actually to their old location, also) since the 1990s. Why not 5 stars? I don't know anything about cars. I mean nothing. But i do know when i' m not getting ripped off. read more

About 5-7 years ago I received a recommendation for a mechanic from one of my students parents. After spending tons of unnecessary money and lengthy stays at previous mechanics I decided to bring my car to Autobahn Service Center, and boy am I glad that I did! I don't have to question about prices because this family run business is to me as honest as they come. They've always made time for me, advised me on the best course of action and most importantly have never robbed me blind like at previous mechanics. I just bought a new car and just sold my old one to one of the guys working there. Honest people are hard to come by and this company does an amazing job. If there's a more honest repair shop out there, I haven't found it. We always bring our vehicle in, and time after time they do great work. That alone is a good enough reason to bring your car here instead of a dealership. But I continue... Numerous times something seems like a complete disaster with our car and it seems like it may need some major expensive part/service to work again, and they discover it's something super small and the bill is a fraction of what I expected. They are honest to a fault. I tell you to look no further. Unless you have some friend down the block that is amazing at fixing cars and will do it for free - OK fine go there. If you don't, go to Autobahn. You will thank yourself (and me) later. read more

Just brought my Mercedez in from California, needed a quick inspection for DMV clearance. These guys saw me 30 minutes before they were about to close and completed my inspection in about 15 minutes. Granted, there was nothing out of order with my car to delay them, but I was in-out-gone super fast. They charged $37 which was the going rate at 5 other places I called. Plus they were helpful letting me know how often I need to take care of NY car stuff that's different from Cali. I'll be back for any future work. Nice guys, helpful attitude, fair price. read more

These guys were awesome. I have a 2015 Mercedes ML 350, still under warranty and yet, I have been having a suspension issue that Mercedes refuses to fix, only stating that nothing is wrong with the car. I brought here to ask them if there is a bigger issue, and that perhaps Mercedes wasn't being fully honest. Well, they did a diagnostic and came to find out that although the struts were not failing, there was probably more wear on one side rather and not the other which was probably the culprit as to why I continuously felt as though the car was slightly off balance. They said that somebody probably hit a really big pothole throwing one side off and thusly under Mercedes warranty, the vehicle is performing up to code. They also did not even charge me for the diagnostic. The least I could do is write a review. Great shop, seems honest, very pleasant, incredible customer service. read more

If you have a European car and you need car help bring it here. This is the best place in New York. It's a German family that has been running it for decades. They are wonderful people. The biggest problem is they don't charge enough and I beg them to find more things to fix on the car (it's a 50 year old car) but they are too honest and thrifty and they only do what they think needs help. This is a place that's difficult to rate. On the one hand their customer service is fantastic, they're family owned and Willy is a very very knowledgeable guy which is imperative when talking about vintage cars. That said, last few times i've brought it in for simple things the work has been real sloppy and i don't think i'm willing to put up with one more blunder. Things like forgetting to tighten the oil cap so that my engine bay is a giant sticky mess (and not cleaning it up so that it smokes when the oil residue gets burned up) or improperly tightening the new fuel filter before a 2k mile trip so i lose all this fuel (how the hell do you forget the new gasket??) or installing a new sealed beam and not aligning it right are amateur mechanic mistakes that i would forgive of myself if i was doing the work but not of someone who charges $100 an hour. Every time i've brought my old benz in for something simple they accidentally knock something out of alignment or leave a mess. All that mishandling has really soured my experience of taking my car here. While i appreciate that they don't try to rip me off or sell me a new transmission when all i need is a to change top the fluid off: what I was looking for was a better quality of care for my vintage car, but guess i gotta keep looking. read more

I have an old BMW convertible that unfortunately doesn't get much use. Lately some dreadful white smoke had started coming out of the engine compartment within minutes of turning it on. I managed to get it over to Autobahn Service Center. Wouldn't you know it, the smoke had stopped. Anyhow, Stefan listened to the symptoms and took a look. apparently oil seeps out of the gaskets and collects when the car is not driven, but burns off when the engine is running. no problem, nothing to do. brakes were also making noise, so he took a look and said there was just some rust from not driving. solution: drive more. "Thanks. How much do I owe you?" "Nothing." Being that I'm none too familiar with various white smokes coming out of the engine and scraping brake noises, he could have totally taken me for a ride. But he didn't, and didn't even charge for his time. the most HONEST mechanic I've ever encountered, and definitely recommended for your german car. They've certainly won my business! read more

If you have a German car and live in Manhattan this is the place to get your car serviced. The cost is well below what dealership charge and this shop is run by very honest and friendly people. I have owned 3 Audi's over the past 10 years and had all of my maintenance and annual service work done here. Audi Manhattan wanted $300 to repair a part that Autobahn said was not necessary. Never had one issue with any of my 3 Audi's. I still go to Audi Manhattan for recall stuff (air bag on A4 and pump on Q5) but the rest I get done at Autobahn. read more

Untrustworthy!!!!!!! Stephan is a complete asshole. I have been bringing my car here and have had excellent service from the whole family. Matis has worked on my car for a few things. My control arm was broken and my brakes needed to be done, along with needing brake fluid, two rotor, and brake hoses, The most expensive item being strut. Stephan took over every call after I had it towed. He gave me a price, 3,000. More expensive than BMW in Midtown . I called for a list of all parts needed and called back and said I would have the proper parts shipped there. Something I have done in the past. With labor which increased 30% for buying parts(no problem), the cost was under 900 dollars for parts and labor. .He said he was charging 85$ a day to have it stored which was unaffordable for me. So I said I would have it removed till the parts come in a few days. When I got there 2 hours later, asked for the paper work he said he through it out, I asked why and he had no reason, I don't think he ever wrote it up and gave us a bogus price.i asked he write it up again so I can see where he got his original cost from, he then said no and he didn't want to work on the car. Was very rude and said it wasn't his problem that the tow truck would have trouble reaching the car that was placed on the curb and double parked. After leaving upset and having to call roadside , when I went back to wait for the tow truck after he left...his sons apologize for their fathers behavior. This is the second incident. I had to be refunded once before for an alignment that I was charged for, drove off and realized it wasn't done!!!! I brought it back and showed them. Stephan then "figured" out it wasn't done because the control arm was bent and to do a proper alignment that needed to be fixed first. And was refunded 150$. Had I not realized the wheel needs to be perfect for a proper alignment in a BMW I would have kept driving the car, payed for something that was never done and caused more damage and possible injury to myself and the car. Unacceptable. Don't trust this business till Stephan retires. I was referred to this place by people who had a great relationship with the grandfather,who spent decades of being a trustworthy competent business owner. What a shame!!! read more

I went there twice. First time the experience was ok. This last time was a disaster. Check engine light and $1500 dollars later after driving car for less than an hour check engine light came back on with them telling me it is now something else. I called for a diagnostic appointment, was told no appointment was necessary. I described my issue, they inspected the car at once, analyzed the problem and told me no repair was immediately necessary. They explained that the symptom, a minor vibration in the suspension, was due to a slight irregularity in a tire which would be eliminated when I replaced the tires. It was unusual to be accommodated so quickly and to be reassured that the symptom need not be addressed immediately. I've experienced so much manipulation and incompetence in my many years of seeking quality auto care that I'm going to Autobahn exclusively from now on. read more

Have been taking our Mercedes to Willy for 18 years and was satisfied. We trust that Willy was always being honest and fair. But we just brought our car in with a problem with the air conditioning not working and now the directionals have an intermittent problem. It's something electrical, we were told. That's it! He's not going to look any further and isn't going to even try to fix it. After all these years? No advice, no estimate, no nothing? I don't know how to rate them, but I am very disappointed. went to Autobahn to have tires installed that I bought on Tire Rack. Arrived about 9 am and by 10:30 was done. Owners are on the premises and where very friendly as I waited in the waiting room. This is the best auto repair experience I've had in many years of owning various types of cars. Recently moved into Manhattan with a '04 Saab wagon - a great car with few problems during 14 years of ownership. Am parking it on the street as I prepare to sell it (has only 77k miles.) Suddenly, the nightmare...alarm goes off randomly different hours of day and night - and diligent research on internet reveals not uncommon with older cars - alarm module (now discontinued) has to be replaced or else take out fuse which would be fine except it also controls A/C - and it's May. Managed to locate a few refurbished one on web - but need to find mechanic to do the work. After days of suggestions by neighbors, doormen, super and construction workers...daughter suggested Autobahn...had noticed great reviews on Yelp. Called...said come up there this afternoon....3 days later (weekend intervening) all done - wires had come loose - no replacement module required. Thanks to Autobahn,have repair AND a/c for unbelievable $189. The sons are knowledgeable, informative and friendly. Needless to say, highly recommended. read more
