Anyway, Mike's did the work thoroughly and well. It did take a week because they are busy, but the job was excellent. They are reliable and priced mid-range for Manhattan, not especially high or low. I haven't had any work done on my car, but as a new NY resident had to have it inspected. They were so honest, informative, and helpful. The man who worked on our car told me to set a reminder on my phone for 11pm a from now to get it done again bc the city looks for people to fine. He was so funny and really helped me to understand what is required in the future so I don't get fined in any way. He told me an hour, and it was done in an hour. I brought my car to Mike's Auto because my check engine light came on. After running the test Mike told me the results only warranted a reset because my car was otherwise fine. He that did free of charge and told me that if the light came back on to bring it back in. A week or so later it came back on so I brought it back and waited to see if it was something that could be fixed before a trip I needed to take. It couldn't be fixed that day but told me what needed to be replaced (the solenoid), gave me the estimate which was reasonable and my car was fine to make the trip and bring back for service when I returned. They fixed my car faster than the time they said needed and I paid exactly what I was quoted. All is well with my car and I highly recommend Mike's Auto. The receptionist is great as well. The check engine light came on in my 2010 Toyota Prius so I went to the closest shop that I could find that was open on a Saturday, Mike's Auto. I thought I needed oil change, but they hooked my car up to the computer and it turns out that something you had gone haywire because I neglected to turn off the engine the last time I filled up the tank. They reset the computer, no more check engine light, and they were very gracious about it. No charge! Based on my experience, this is a very honorable business. They're not trying to take advantage of anyone. The person to person interactions may be a little gruff, but don't let that discourage you. We can't believe how lucky we were to find Mike's Auto shop- a hole in the wall with NO sign. Our car was parked in front of MT Sinai. It had a terrible noise when we left our UWS apt but we had to drive for an emergency appt. When it was time to leave the car would not start. We waited over 3 hours for AAA to respond (we have been members for 50 years but never again). Each time we were told the driver would be there in a few minutes. A Mt Sinai driver recommended Mike's Auto Repair.When the driver showed up he called my husband Pop in a derogatory manner while on the phone. He jumped started the car and LEFT! The next day the car started but the noise was still there. John put the car up on the lift and determined it was the heat shield. He tested the battery and said it was only 14% effective. We told him it was 15 months old and he said we should get a new battery fromAAA as it's under warranty. He did not charge us labor for his time and he was SO HONEST! Tonight I found out about a family emergency in NJ and had to get out of town quickly at 530 pm on a Friday. But this week when reparking my car i heard something dragging and scraping underneath and wanted to make sure it was safe to drive on the GWB and highway and that i wasn't going to lose something important or get something lodged in the wheel at highway speed. I called, brought it over and was seen right away. The guys at the shop were really nice, put the car up on the lift, saw the big piece covering my oil pan near the wheel had come loose. One of them threw a couple of screws in to fix the problem and get me road ready. The manager or owner didn't charge me, but I gave the younger guy who did the repair $20 for his trouble. My car broke down in the city and went in to emergency mode. Found this place on yelp and dropped the car off 8 am when they opened, they fixed it, paid a fair price and left. Seemed like they lived up to the yelp hype. Recently, I find out that while the car was in the shop it got a ticket "for parking on the sidewalk". I never knew and was never told of the ticket when i picked up the car. Nor was there a ticket on the windshield. When I dropped off the car I drove it into the garage, someone must have moved it on to the sidewalk. Update: Evans at the shop paid for the ticket and apologized for the whole issue. I am glad they are honest to pay for anything that happens to my car while at their shop. For a moment I was concerned I would have to pay for the ticket. read more

OMG! I have no idea how this place has 5 stars. Terrible customer service. Had to put a "down payment" before I even had anything done to the car. Weird. Also, you should have absolutely nothing else planned the day you bring the car in except wait around for it. 4 hours turned into "just wait in the office it'll only be 45 min" then changed to 2 hours of wasted time waiting around a dirty mechanic shop. Wow, in addition to my previous update with their absolute disaster of a botched diagnosis, these guys apparently parked my car on the street so I got a parking ticket, and then destroyed it before I picked up my car. I moved and just got a final notice in the mail from the city right before it went to collections. $125. Never use these guys!!! EDIT on 10/29/15: Response to Mike's comment below calling me a liar: I took my car here once, back in April 2015, and that's when I got the ticket. I didn't post about it until recently because I didn't know; these guys threw the ticket away so I never knew about it, and then I moved out of state and didn't get any notice from the city until right before it went to collections. Also, Mike never tried to call me, or at least he never left any kind of message. I love that he thinks that I should call random phone numbers that don't leave a message back. Mike's response below to a dissatisfied customer says more than I ever could about whether you want to take your car here. EDIT on 11/11/15: Here's a scan of the ticket I received: http://take.ms/WZYfV Note that the address is right in front of Mike's shop, and the date was when I had my car there back in April. I'm a fan! Met Mike & his lovely crew (esp Jara) & they were great! Straightforward, clear, friendly, & efficient. Earlier this week, Jara took my phone reservation for a Saturday 3pm car inspection. She said it would take up to 45 mins to an hour & cost about $10-37 depending upon the car. They took the car on time as scheduled. While waiting, my husband & I decided to take a stroll along the Highline to Chelsea Piers. Mike called 20 mins later to say all was good but that we could take our time as long as we got back before their 5pm closing. I was extremely suspicious about the high salutin' yelp reviews. I was wondering...how did they pay people to write these? But what other choice did I have? I live in the city, my car was broken down and the Triple A certified mechanics sounded like a sleazy shop and had an average of one star. I was pleasantly surprised by the excellent experience I had here. The Yelp hype is real. I'm real. This review is real. No bribes I promise! They even helped me get the car out of the grips of the Triple A certified tow truck place that was insisting on fixing it and pretending they'd never heard of Mike's after being instructed three times on the Mike's plan! Evan from Mike's called me the second the car arrived too. The Triple A place never bothered. I have a Porsche so I don't want just anybody working on my car. However, I would rather not pay twice as much at the dealership to have my car fixed. Mike's was the perfect place for me. They had it fixed on time, allowed me to keep the car there until my schedule worked out for me to pick it up, and they were respectful and explained everything. I had such friendly service and all the guys in the shop were so nice. As a single woman sometimes I feel that car mechanics will tend to take advantage of me. This is nothing like what I experienced at Mike's. They didn't try to make me buy stuff I didn't come in for and instead of telling me I needed a brake job immediately they told me how much longer to go to keep the price reasonable. The motor to my convertible top stopped working. Audi of Manhattan quoted me $3500 to fix. I paid $2100 at Mike's. Enough said? I've been told Audis are among the most complicated cars to fix, but these guys were able address the motor and the trunk latch pretty quickly, within the same day of receiving the parts. These guys are great. We interacted with both Mike and Evans, and they were unfailingly professional, are passionate about cars, and are ethical to their customers. It's a rare combination to have these days, let alone New York! I'm happy to have found them!! read more

The service here is impeccable. I frantically called this place on a Friday night at 6pm because I needed a car battery replaced ASAP. Eric said he wouldn't be able to get one for me until the next day because all the shops were already closed, but he told me to bring my car in by 7 so that he could check it and see if I was okay to drive without the battery replacement. I didn't get to the place til just about 7 but everyone worked quickly to deduce that my car would, in fact, only get me where I needed to go, and wouldn't be able to bring me back. When I told Eric my situation - that I really needed the car the next day - he said he'd try a 'hail mary' and see if anyone would possibly have a replacement tonight. Even after I insisted that it would be okay if I just picked up the car in the morning, he still called around and found a place that was, miraculously, still open and brought one by. The guys immediately got started cleaning things out under the hood to replace the battery even though by now it was much past closing time. As it turns out, the battery couldn't be replaced that night due to a missing piece for the replacement, but as promised, the car was ready for me first thing in the morning. Eric was very upfront about all the costs and the state of the replacement parts. Love this place, would totally recommend. read more

They took a look at my car after it started smoking from the engine earlier in the day. Instead of trying to upsell after doing a free diagnostic, Mike recommended I get a cheap replacement piece from the dealership. I had an emergency this past weekend when I was driving towards the Lincoln Tunnel only to smell burning rubber and see smoke coming from my car. I looked on Yelp for a recommendation and found this place. Not only did they take me in on a very busy day but they explained my issue clearly, told me I could still safely drive my car, and didn't charge me for the diagnosis. We spoke to someone who was incredibly reassuring and easy to talk to. He recommended a towing company that turned out to be very good. When we got there, they were upfront about the likely problem and likely cost. Within an hour or so they figured out exactly what was wrong, and started calling around for replacement parts. After another few hours, they called us back and let us know that they found the parts locally at a reasonable price, installed them, and the car was ready to go. While the whole event was stressful (it always is when your car breaks down), the guys at Mike's really took care of us, were upfront about all the costs involved, gave us realistic expectations, and were more than accommodating to our needs. Made an appointment at 8 am for a simple inspection. The mechanic said that they don't do inspections at 8 am but he will do it for me? Then he said I needed new brakes and said he could give me quote for the brakes. I just had my brakes replaced and btw Porsche has an board computer that tells me if I need new brakes. I told him I have my own Porsche mechanic. He pretended to care and said please get new brakes. He saw a girl with the a nice car and tried to take advantage of me. Never will be back. read more

I have no idea what Mike's garage other Yelpers went to, but this Mike's is a disaster. There is no where to pull up your car and check-in. No one seems to work there. When I finally found someone to acknowledge that this was Mike's garage I was informed to check in around the corner. I pulled around the corner walked in and some guy said there is a line and I would have to wait a half an hour because there were three people ahead of me. Given the faulty start I doubted my car would be serviced in under an hour and just left to another station a few blocks north which inspected my car in less than 10 min. I came in for a blinker problem, and in two minutes, he assessed the problem and ordered the part. When the part came in this afternoon, I came back and the job was done in another two minutes. Waste of time: I called on Sunday morning to bring in my car because of a noisy belt. The person on the phone said that they are busy right now but that I could bring the car at 7pm today so they can start working on it Monday morning. I asked if he is sure someone will be there to receive the car at 7pm - he said yes. Instead of going with a different car shop that would have taken my car Sunday morning, I chose Mike's Auto because of the reviews. Unfortunately, NOBODY was there at 7pm. The shop was shut down and the gate closed. I knocked and called multiple times. Bottom line: wasted an opportunity to have my car fixed on Sunday somewhere else and wasted time and gas driving to their shop and back home. read more
