In general, I don't use mechanics. But my wife's brakes started squealing, and she wanted us to find a good mechanic we could trust for the big jobs (Translation: she doesn't want to die if I mess up her brakes.) I called a couple of friends, and they both recommended Jeff at Greg's. I can't say enough good things about Jeff and his crew. I called and asked about replacing all 4 rotors and pads. Got quoted a very good price, and scheduled in for a Tuesday. Jeff called a few hours into Tuesday, and let me know that the front brakes were fine and didn't need replacing. I'd forgotten that we just replaced them not that long ago, and they didn't have many miles on them, just rust. The rears needed replacing, but the front just needed the rust ground off to stop the squealing. Now, a lesser mechanic would have seen the brakes were fine, and replaced them anyway; we'd have gotten what we asked for. Jeff doesn't roll that way. He fixed the actual problem, and it cost half of what we were quoted. Another note, the rotors he sold us are quality rotors. Ceramic coated so they won't rust after 5 minutes in the rain (unlike the old rotors our last mechanic installed!) All in all, Jeff and his crew are top notch. I had an engine and a transmission error code. A mechanic at the shop also checked fluids and found burned metal in them, not a great sign. They told me in the gentlest way possible it was time to get a new car. I asked what I owed them and they refused to charge me. Coming from NYC, I was taken aback to be treated with such kindness and good faith by strangers running a business. We talked more about cars and about some new cars to avoid that they are seeing a lot of problems with. Since this visit, I bought new car. Last year when my check engine light came on and I brought my car to them, they told me that my whole transmission needed replacing right then, because it could fail in the next few months. (I've waited to give this review for that reason). They were urging me to get the work started right then, a cool $2800 right after I was out of work with a cancer diagnosis, and in desperate need of a working car to get to Boston for life-saving treatment, which I even told them. I was panicking more than any other time in my life, so I went out of town to get a second opinion. The other shop I found (in Springfield) tinkered with it for a few minutes for free and assured me it would be ok and was not a safety issue. 14 months later, my transmission is still doing just fine. I wish I had the resources to talk to a lawyer; this is unconscionable business practice. It put me under even more totally unnecessary stress than I was already facing, and it wasn't even true. And for the service of looking at the transmission, they charged me over $90 without mentioning before that it would cost so much. Even while they were explaining all this work I supposedly needed, they treated me like I was wasting their time, because they (I think Dave) kept saying "normally we work on cars that need $5,000-$7,000 in work", like mine was barely worth the dirt on the tires to them because it's old and basic. I still can't believe they tried to do that to me while I was facing a threat like cancer, needing to know that my car could get me to appointments safely.

I brought to Talcot Transmissions in West Hartford and they charged me $145 to "diagnose" it. They claimed the transmission needed to be removed and completely rebuilt for and additional cost of $5600. I had doubts whether all the work was needed so I brought the truck to AAMCO of East Hartford. At AAMCO Steph did a free check and diagnosed a problem with the solenoid pack. The problem was repaired with new parts and works great (for $1525 including tax). Thanks to AAMCO and no thanks to Talcot Transmissions.
