It am a retired auto mechanic and most all of my own work. I inquired about having some exhaust work done. The estimate was very high. Made feel like they were trying to make up for lost income on parts. I have used them in the past. And give good word of mouth recommendations. Doubt I will anymore. TLDR: employees are condescending scammers who try to take advantage of anyone who isn't a mechanic if you are having car trouble and aren't a mechanic and don't want to be taken advantage of, avoid this shop at all costs. when i brought my vehicle in because the air wasn't blowing, i asked for an estimate for the visit and was only told it would be about an hour. at no point after asking for the estimate was i told that their fee to look at your vehicle is $120 ($120 for them to spend 30 minutes max checking it out). not to fix anything at all, just to look at your vehicle will cost you $120 for coming here. when i stated that i was never told it would be $120 after asking for an estimate, two of the three workers began arguing with me (the one who i asked for the estimate remaining completely silent the whole time). they told me i needed to ask upfront for the price, as if that isn't what asking for an estimate is. "professionals" should know what an estimate is. they tried to tell me that you can't go most places and know the prices up front, and that they never disclose their $120 fee to any of their customers and "no one has complained before". their examples were "you cant go to the doctor or barber and know what the price of the service is before you get it", what? like doctors don't have receptionists who give you cost breakdowns, and barbers don't have posted prices for haircuts before you sit down. ridiculously stupid argument. they even tried to pull the "well barbers are different from hairdressers", like because i'm a woman and i go to a hairdresser instead of a barber it's completely different and i wouldn't understand it. completely gross and sexist arguments over and over. my husband in the military goes to a barber every week, and it's no different. really just a pathetic attempt to imply that because i'm a woman i wouldn't understand. disgusting misogynistic behavior by "professionals" to try to undermine my intelligence. also after arguing they gave me a print out of the cost of repairs which says it would be $488.55, but over the phone they quoted me an extremely inflated price of $607 for a motor blower. just shows they completely make up their prices as they go. total scammers. they said they'll have the manager reach out to me tomorrow, so we'll see how that conversation goes. in the meantime- AVOID. read more

I've used A & J since they opened. Both of the owners are hard working honest people. Being retired law enforcement, I'm always skeptical of any automotive shop. They're always there to answer questions and offer advice. My family takes their vehicles to them. Never a problem nor a complaint. Always fast and reasonably priced. Another reason I respect these gentleman, they give back to their community. Whether it's sponsoring area youth sports teams, supporting someone in need, and/or supporting local law enforcement. read more

Quick to fix the problem and fast turn around with a bunch of nice people to deal with.

Very polite and fast, but they overcharge like a mo' fo'. Cannot speak to the quality of their work but since hardly any customers were there, i imagine they're not too good. They charged me $95 to check the engine maintenance light code (which i've heard you can get done for free at autozone or other such chain auto parts stores). Required two new oxygen sensors (upstream) for which they were going to charge $171.99 a piece. A quick google search and i found many decent brands for no more than $80 a piece. Total labor and everything would've cost me $538. I'm not a car guy and I don't have much experience with car mechanics, but this seems unreasonably expensive. I plan on doing this labor myself. Will update this post if it turns out it really requires an expert to conduct the labor but regardless, the price they were charging seems excessive. Also have to concur with Kelle F.'s review that I did feel like i was being misled a bit. read more

A & J: Do not take your car there! They are one of the biggest rip off artists of all times. They've serviced my car many times, and they are the people that make you hate auto mechanics. Sloppy, shoddy work, and flimsy excuses for why things go wrong after they have worked on them. They supposedly fixed my front seat after I reclined it and it wouldn't go back up. Yup, they fixed it all right. Now it doesn't move at all. If you question their integrity on their workmanship, you can a host of excuses. They also treat women customers like flaming idiots. A&J is 17 a mile or so west of 95 ( toward Warrenton ). They are in front of the Bloom shopping plaza. My brother-in-law recommended these guys for the state inspection. They are very friendly and do great work. Ive had a loose bulb or something in the rear of the car causing the indicator to go off ( and thus a ding on the inspection ). They fixed it at each inspection. Ive fixed it. It still happens. This last time ( Feb 08 ) they dinged me for it again and I mentioned that it keeps happening. He said he would take a look and see if anything was loose and wouldnt charge me if its happened before and they havent fixed it. To this date its fixed. =) They dont pressure you to have them do the work. An earlier year I had an engine mount loose. I told them I would fix it myself and they had no problem with it. Great guys. Great service. Great place to get the state inspection. read more

Only giving one star because apparently no stars is not an option. My husband took our car there to get an inspection. They failed it claiming our car needed $1,200 dollars in repairs. He then left there to get a second opinion. Not only did the second mechanic say the only thing they got right was we needed new windshield wipers (which he replaced) and passed us but my husband noticed that on top of the greasy hand prints all over our hood that there was a dent in the passenger side front fender that was not there before hand. So on top of trying to con us out of money they actually damaged our car. Not only will we never return but we will make sure to warn everyone we know. read more

Moved in from out of state and got the very first state inspection done here. Bad idea. A rejection and $500 dollar repair bill later, I did get my sticker. The repair was for motor mounts, which I have come to learn is the stand-by rip off repair for Virginia mechanics. The motor mounts were worn, but in no way in need of replacing. Meaning, no vibration or noise. In hindsight, I should have taken the car elsewhere but needed it fixed quickly. I suppose that is what places like this count on. They are at least nice to you during your root canal, so I give it a 2 star. read more

Poor customer service and communication. Took my car in for an oil change and state inspection at 7 am. Per clerk at desk, leave your car with us and service will be done by noon (lunch time). We will call you when car is ready - first mistake. No call back at noon (4 hours later). I called at 12:45pm to see if car was ready. Clerk stated that employees called in and did not show up. This left a staffing shortage and my car hasn't been worked on yet. However, he will put a rush job on the car and service will be completed in a hour or so. Second mistake - Missed communication - why didn't clerk call customer back around 10 am and explain the situation. All he had to communicate was, car will not be ready at noon ( lunch time). 2:30 pm came and gone, no call back. I called back at 2:45 pm to see if car was ready. Clerk stated a power outage occurred. They can not work on any cars, print anything, etc. If I leave my car overnight with them, they will work on it first thing in the morning. If the service was done in the morning between 7:30 am and 11:30 am, I wouldn't be leaving this review. I asked the clerk when do they close and expect the service to start. He said 6 pm but if the outage isn't fixed by 5 pm, he is sending his guys home. To make a long story short, clerk called me at 4:20 pm and said I need brakes and pads for my car for completion of state inspection. Total cost $479.00. Poor pissed customer service and communication. Whether cost was fair and reasonable, it was poor pissed customer service. A whole day wasted. I picked my car up at 5:40 pm, almost 15 to 20 minutes before their closing time. read more

(Unfortunately a lot of my reviews are for auto shops, I've become pretty savvy)Bottom line, they did fix my truck. But, I felt the whole time that I was being misled and taken for a bit of a ride. I had the misfortune of having my truck engine die for good while on the road. I had business elsewhere and had no choice but to have it towed somewhere. After getting the diagnosis, I called around town and finally settled on A & J. I picked them because they assured me, twice, three times even, that Jasper did an engine for my Nissan Frontier. Swore it. They advertise themselves as preferred venders for Jasper. The next day, when they had my truck in their paws, they call and tell me there was a horrible mix up at Jasper, and no, they did not have the engine. They then sold me a used engine for not that much cheaper than the Jasper was promised. I was really in a bind here, I was working 8 hours away, needed the truck fixed, absolutely didn't have time to take it somewhere else. I let them do it, with dread in my very soul. The truck is still running well 4,000 miles later, so I guess they did their job. But, based on the misinformation they gave me on several other aspects of the repair, I absolutely feel like I was purposefully misled, and most likely have a used engine with many more miles on it than they stated. So, I guess it'll do. But I would never recommend them. Hard to just give them two stars when the truck does appear to be fixed, but the possible lies are too much to stomach. I've been with good mechanics, people who not only fix my truck but make me feel good about it. These guys seem to have part of that going for them. read more

I went to A&J for basic maintenance cycle items and some repair work over the last few years. I decided to move on when it became more and more apparent they were seeming to "find" a lot of things that were costly repairs. Vehicles will have repairs happen; that is unavoidable but when the recommendations are always extensive for things that are very involved repair work then it becomes sketchy. The final straw was when they treated my wife like an idiot and tried to get one by on her until she called me. The folks that work there are always polite and seem to be helpful that was never an issue in my opinion. I just feel some of things found may not always be the case or the prices are a little higher than normal but they are located on a main drag so that happens. To use a specific experience I had my vehicle looked at for a transmission issue that was causing it to just not drive right at certain speeds. They called and recommended i replace the entire transmission for 3 grand. I replied it was still under warranty since i just had it done less than a year ago. All of a sudden running some cleaner and replacing the fluid for 180 should fix it then sir. I don't need that sort of stuff going on when it comes to my money. read more

I use them often and although most shops, I feel are expensive for repairs, I had a repair recently which I thought was going to cost me much more than it did. Took my car in for an exhaust leak. The leak was fixed, which passed me on inspection but broke my driver side door handle in the process. I now enter my car through the passenger door. I believe they're at fault, therefore they should be liable to fix. Especially after I already spent a hefty sum on repairs. I did receive an apology phone call a few days after the incident. I appreciated the apology but that doesn't out weigh the inconvenience read more

My husband took my car here to get a state inspection. They were super fast and friendly. I wish the story ended there - A couple days later I drove my car into work and noticed a loud noise. As I drove the noise got louder. Thinking I was dragging something I pulled over to see if there was anything physically wrong with the car. Nothing. The next day, I took the car to the dealership because it was still under warranty. It took the dealership 2 hours to find the problem. A&J took the wheels off for the inspection, but forgot to torque them back on. I was driving around on wheels with bolts that were only hand tightened on. Luckily, I didn't get into an accident but it could have ended very badly. We contacted A&J after the dealer torqued the wheels, but of course they denied even taking the wheels off - which they did because at the time they apologized for messing up my paint. If you go there, make sure you check your tires before you leave. read more

I took my old Ford F-250 to have the alignment done. When they went to pull it into the shop the starter solenoid stuck (common ground issue with older Ford's). The mechanic didn't know what to do and let to turn until starter was smoking. Every real mechanic knows that when this happens you have to tap the solenoid located on the fender to get it to release. Then they called me saying I needed a new starter and solenoid. I told them I would come down and put a new one myself which they gave me no complaint over me doing that. I came by and put the new starter and solenoid in while the truck was in their parking lot which took about 15 minutes. While I was doing that, the own came out and started cursing at me telling me to get my truck out of his lot and he was calling a tow truck. I would never go back to the shop again. They do not know what they are doing and they are rude if you don't let them fix your vehicle after they break it. By the way, the ground wire was loss and that is why the solenoid stuck. read more

They were very polite on the phone when making an appointment and when we got there, they were friendly, efficient and affordable. They had the car done in less than 30 minutes and even put our plate on the front for no charge. Very friendly. Will definitely use them again. read more

I needed a state inspection done on fairly new car. I asked how long told me 45 min. That was correct and had me out with a rejection because of a bad tag light and corner light and I had aftermarket HID they would fix it for $90 for lights. I told them I would fix it and return they said no problem they wouldn't have to re inspect and no appointment was needed. By the way I told him I was not from around here never did he say they take your current inspection and replace it with a rejection sticker, would have been nice to know before a 2 hour ride home so here I sit because they have oil changes and can't take 2 mins to look at my tag light, corner light and headlights literally the only thing that failed. He asked if I'd like to make a appointment lmao and come 2 hours a way to peek at my lights. Seems someone got pissed for whatever reason and wanted to state his "power". So he lied about me not needed an appointment, and in lieu of satisfying a customer they chose to make me wait 45 min for the oil change and then took my car back for 5 minuets to "re inspect". Hopefully this will caution one customer who expected customer service and prevent them from losing time or money. Update Cody called me stating they did have to re inspect the car per the law which I don't understand how the first inspect took 30 mins and the "re inspection" took 5 min. So 50 mins to look at 3 bulbs wow. Better yet he stated I was slandering them and I needed to take the review down. Good luck with that. Treat people with respect and you don't have to worry about reviews. And when they all lie the same you know you got the truth, do yourself a favor look at the other 1 stars it's all about their inspection "process". read more

I am surprised at the negative reviews about A&J. We have taken our vehicles there several times for repair, and A&J has always been friendly and very straight with us. On my first trip there, they actually talked me out of an expensive repair that I was pretty sure I needed, in favor of a much simpler fix. Turns out, they were right. We've never had to take a vehicle back for a redo. We've had them do brake jobs, a front end repair, several oil changes, and transmission service. They are fast, they always call to discuss what I want (I usually use the night-drop), and they've never tried to sell me things I don't need. A competent and honest auto shop is harder to find than a competent and honest politician, but these guys are it. Recommended. read more
