The breakfast sandwich was 5 stars. Great brioche fresh tomatoes and avocado. The bourbon French toast was flavorful with pecans, strawberries and blueberries. The portion is sized for a large appetite. The lemon ricotta pancakes were wonderful. Numerous reviews talk highly of them, I concur. Service was quick and friendly. I asked for cornmeal pancakes. Although they offered to cook mine separate as I have a shellfish allergy my keen sense detected a salmon fish taste on the outside. I only ate one and my friend another. It came with a chipotle butter, not tasty. I suggested they offer a fresh salsa. Really bummed to rate the place a 1 Star but the waitress we had was terrible. When we came in the design of the place was pretty unique which drew us in and also the plating for the food that I saw on yelp looked delicious. When we came in it took a while to get our order taken and my partner went to the restroom and she insisted on taking our order even though it was just me. We asked for no cheese on the breakfast sandwich specifically due to food allergies. The food took a really really long time to get to us and when we got it I noticed there was a TON of cheese on my partners sandwich but no one was around for me to mention it to so we decided to just pick it all off since we were hungry and in a hurry to leave. After we finished our food and more the waitress finally came back and asked if we were ready for our bill and I mentioned the situation with the food and she just walked away, we tried asking for more coffee but I guess she walked away too quick to hear it. I also wanted to mention the yelp discount I saw for the check in but didn't get a chance to until afterwards, she eventually returned and let us know she had given us a discount on the food but it was the exact same amount as the first bill she showed us... at that point I was still going to give the place 2 stars because my French toast was really good, but when I came back from the restroom she had the audacity to come up to me and inform me rudely that tip was not included and stormed away. Yes, I did not tip because your service was ridiculous and just left an AWFUL taste in my mouth at the end of my meal. And I'm 100% glad that I did not leave a tip. We checked this place out for breakfast one morning as we headed to the park. I ordered the breakfast sandwich which was very large and quite tasty. I very much enjoyed having the fresh avocado and the cheddar was smooth and tangy. My family ordered omelets, the traditional breakfast and blueberry pancakes. Everything was fresh and delicious. The service was a bit slow - and I was slightly disappointed in the french press coffee - but everything else was very good. We read that the French toast was delicious and so my little brother had to try that. Simple. That's how I'd describe this place. No frills, no artwork, no nonsense. Minimal and clean. Oh and the food is pretty good. No reason to not give this 5 stars - after all the waitress was incredibly nice and our food came out quickly and tasted great. While I understand that the place is supposed to be minimal, I wish it had the slightest bit of color on the walls or even the tables & chairs to lighten the mood. Alas, this did not ruin my meal. My husband and I were looking for a place to grab a quick bite before taking our 2 year old to go check out a Christmas lights + tree around the park / Rockefeller area, and I picked this place because it seemed underrated. There were not that many Yelp reviews and of the ones left, they all raved about the food. What I found was that these were clearly reviews left by tourists and I need to do a better job sorting through these misleading stars... maybe Yelp can help us assign categories to places that are popular to folks out of town, I'm not sure how to distinguish that on your own sometimes, especially when 95% of NYC is a tourist trap. The wait to seat my husband, me (8 months pregnant) & toddler was extremely long @ about 15min. Having been pregnant twice while living in NYC I really do not expect any special treatment, but this place was half empty at 10am on a Sunday morning. The host consistently left at least 1-2 groups of people waiting at the door while she supposedly got tables ready, when in actuality she just kept walking back and forth between the bar and the kitchen in the back doing I don't know what... I couldn't figure out whether she was a manager or she was simply required to worked at the coffee bar + seat people simultaneously + serve food, but she was strolling around all over the restaurant. When finally seated, we ordered a burger, smoked salmon scrambled eggs, and egg sandwich, all of which were greasy as expected, but nothing noteworthy in terms of taste or plating. It was also extremely dark inside, dimly lit with random colored lights along the walls, so honestly I couldn't really tell what color any of my food even was. Our waiter was decently attentive and checked in with us when we first got our food. However, at one point later in the meal she came by again while I was alone at the table and asked if I needed anything. I responded, "no, just the check please" then turned to get my wallet from my purse. When I looked up she had stacked all of our half-eaten plates, one of which was a completely untouched burger that we were in the process of breaking apart to feed to our picky toddler. I have never encountered a restaurant where the waiter just takes food away without double checking with you, and asking if you "need anything else" is not double checking... the explicit words that need to be uttered is "are you done with this"! By that point I just wanted to get out of this cave and enjoy the rest of our day so we ended up running across the street to the Plaza Food Hall to get my daughter a quick bite. Not planning on revisiting. The staff here clearly needs more training in many aspects, and honestly, looking across the type of people walking into this restaurant and the price point of the food, the service standards are too low compared to the higher end of clientele they appear to be serving. Just go to Plaza Food Hall... it's always packed, but at least no one will throw your breakfast away without your consent! read more

Do not come here! First off, their silverware was very dirty. Honestly it looked like they just wiped it down after other customers use it. They served me water and the glass was so dirty I could spot the spectacles not even by lifting the glass. Definitely didn't drink from it. My girlfriend got the pancakes with chocolate on them and that was about the only good thing there. I got orange scrambled eggs! Nasty orange scrambled eggs. Even after putting salt and pepper, it didn't make them better. Once seated, our orders were taken fairly quickly and though they looked a bit stressed they were still nice. We ordered steak hash and over-medium eggs and they charged us extra for this request and we weren't informed of this while we ordered. We were also charged extra for mushrooms when I ordered a scramble with bacon spinach and mushrooms. It said that you could pick three items so not too sure why we were charged extra but I didn't want to make a fuss about it as they seemed really busy and agitated. I was visiting NY and had just gotten into the city. While waiting to check in to my hotel I was killing time in Central Park near the south side. a.cafe was a convenient place to grab a quick bite. It is located in the aka building and is right next to the a.lounge. I think the individual components of the cafe were good but the whole was lesser than the sum of the parts. I was expecting a hip modern vibe given its minimalist geometric architecture and soft purple lighting, but I got more of a generic hotel feel. The background music was a throwback to late 2000s soft pop. The staff were very friendly and efficient and my food arrived quickly. I ordered the salmon burger with a side salad. The burger itself was seared, meaty, and moist and was served on a toasted brioche bun. I could definitely discern the salmon, but I thought it was a little over zealous with the salt. The aioli was tangy and creamy and complemented the salmon. The salad tasted fresh and the vinaigrette had good zing, but some of the mixed green leaves were a little unwieldy. The espresso did smell amazing though and I would love to try some next time! read more

Cleanliness and variety of menu offerings drew me in. Claustrophobic feeling due to low ceiling. Oatmeal was watery, like very watery, and it didn't thicken much as it sat. Egg white, spinach, tomato and mushroom sandwich had great flavor but was placed on very thin toast that became mush quickly as water from spinach and tomatoes leeched as expected. Went for breakfast on a Sunday morning and had the worst breakfast experience I've had in a long time. There were only two tables occupied when we arrived, and we placed our order. We ordered coffee and tea, multigrain toast w/preserves, fresh berries and lemon ricotta pancakes. Firstly it took about 15 minutes to bring a regular cup of coffee and a cup of tea. Then when our food arrived, it was just plain terrible. We were brought white toast instead of multigrain toast. The berries tasted strongly of onions - I can only assume they'd been cut on the same board as onions (and who knows what else) without washing. And the lemon ricotta pancakes where dark to the point of almost burnt on the outside and completely raw throughout. I've eaten a lot of ricotta pancakes and this was not normal, they weren't just slightly undercooked, they were raw batter all the way to the edges. When we pointed out all of the above to our waitress she tried to tell us that this was normal for ricotta pancakes, and didn't address anything else or offer to replace anything or take anything off the bill. We elected to get the check, leave and go somewhere else. Spent close to $40 for what amounted to tea and coffee delivered slowly. read more
