My husband surprise me with dinner reservations here on a Sunday and I was very pleased. The place feels small yet intimate. The staff was very friendly. The food was delicious and satiating. I was really glad that we got the special- it was cooked to perfection! This is definitely a must try it whether it's a date night or a catch up with a good friend.

AFA is a rare restaurant where people talk in hushed voices, and the noise level is just a comfortable buzz that doesn't interfere with your own conversation. It's cozy, refined, and eclectic. It has a nice romantic atmosphere, making it a great place for a first date where you can really get to know someone. The food is very good. My partner had the organic roast half chicken that he said was one of the best he'd ever had. It comes with Brussels sprouts which were swapped out for sautéed greens at his request. I had the salmon which was perfectly cooked medium rare. My only dislike was the mixed veggies it was served on top of had a bit too many different flavors for my taste, and was a little too strong for the salmon. For dessert we had the apple tart with vanilla ice cream which was divine. AFA is a great neighborhood restaurant that I will return to.

A Food Affair looks like a well worn Parisian bistrot in a working class area in the 20ème Arrondissement. It has a down home, unpretentious feel of a bustling scene while the front and especially the back patio dining are more leisurely with green plants. Very well frequented by a varied crowd that was mostly mainland East Asians on a Friday night. Food here also has mostly a feel of Cuisine Bourgeoise where the food is hearty and filling. This is not a house of Haute Cuisine. My amiable, helpful waiter is from Lyon, considered to be the food capital of France by many. However, he seemed more interested in slinging out food than a short chat on AFA food information. 1) Escargot: a lengthwise slice of a boiled potato is the foundation on which escargot snails ride with a pouring of what may be Beurre Maître d'Hôtel made of butter and puréed green parsley with an addition of heavy cream. 2) Organic Mary's Farm Duck Leg Confit: Thigh & drumstick is slow simmered in its own juices, but this time it also seems simmered in light tomato juice along with Beluga lentils, spinach with passion fruit glaze. Slice of orange, wedges of tangerine as a agrodolce/ sweet sour garnish harking to Canard à l'Orange. This confit reminds me of Cassoulet stew which has similar ingredients but instead of Tarbais beans, lighter lentils are used. Fall off the bone, the duck meat had a good tasting infusion of its own fat with the tomato acting as a gastrique. Unconventional Confit de Canard, but not if taken in context to Cassoulet. 1-2a) Tempranillo Varietal, biodynamically grown from Spain: Dark fruits like cherry, blackberry. Juicy, acidic to counter the sweetness, touch of tannic bitterness. Paired well with the rich Escargot, and the Confit. 3) Myers Lemon Pie: Terrine of Myers Lemon gellée, fluffy, whipped Crème Chantilly-Mascarpone cheese with a almond based Marzipan crust. Scattered with pistachio powder & preserved Mandarin fruit. Closest in American cooking to a Key Lime Pie, but much more refined. This is unique to AFA. You will not go hungry if you're used to American super sized helpings. AFA food may not be listed officially in the La Rousse Gastronomique, but this food may work especially well in the cold winter months when heavy comfort food is craved. 4- Stars

First time visiting, we came for DineLA & we loved it! Cute little restaurant, delicious food, friendly service, with street parking or park in the lot in the back. We enjoyed everything we ordered. The artisan salad was good, my husband really liked the roasted bone marrow which paired well with the grilled bread. The Grass Fed Beef bourguignon was tasty, which was like a hearty stew & came with pasta. The Australian Lamb Shank Tagine was flavorful & fall off the bone tender. The desserts were equally delicious, we enjoyed the Meyer Lemon Pie & Tahitian Vanilla Crème Brulee with berries. Make sure you make reservations. We will definitely return to try more items on the menu.

I went with my boyfriend on a date here and the ambiance was great! Everyone was so nice and helpful with the menu. It seemed like everyone we talked to was French which gave an authentic French vibe. The food was amazingggg the chef came out to talk to us and he was so nice! We were sat outside and the only problem was the bugs there was a lot of mosquitos and I got bit quite a bit cause I was in a skirt. Regardless I would come back possibly just sit inside. Again the food was delicious!

Delicious French food! My companion and I had the Scottish salmon with calamari, Australian lamb shank tagine, mushroom tourte, and for dessert, French chocolate mousse and Meyer lemon pie. Everything was delectable! Great service, quaint ambiance. There's an outdoor patio with heating lamps in the back. Street parking. We'll be back for DineLA.com.

A quaint gem my husband found to reserve for our anniversary dinner! It was the perfect intimate setting for the occasion and I'm so glad he decided on A Food Affair! Ambiance: perfect noise level (for both the music and background chatter) for an intimate dinner with a partner or a group of people. Nice warm lighting, decor is super homey/not obnoxious -- I loved it. Service: attentive but not overbearing. You can see Christian, one of the co-owners, come out to greet each guest throughout the nice -- such a nice personal touch to the experience. Food: - Drinks: my husband and I had a few cocktails -- the Passionate Affair, Lover's crush, and Normandie. Just slightly bubbly, not overbearingly sweet. Quite enjoyed them and if I had the capacity to have more glasses I definitely would have had more! - Food: ** Mary's duck rillettes: the bread was perfect warm and toasted accompanied by a nice spread of cormichons, mustard, and a DELICIOUS jam (I think there was cooked down onion but texturally seemed like there was something else in there). It was the perfect accompaniment with the wine, especially with the cormichons and pickled pepper. ** Mushroom torte: nice buttery pastry and rich sauce topped with mushrooms -- yum! The mushrooms had a nice meaty flavor/texture that did not have you missing protein ** Truffle fries: the most underwhelming thing of the night, could have done without, granted it was a side. Nice herbaceous fragrance with the thyme topped with some shaved Parmesan and garlic. They were crispy and tasted fresh but nothing special ** Brussels sprouts: nice sweetness from the dates ** Beef bourguignon: beef was nice and tender, pappardelle was the perfect al dente. The shaved carrots were a nice touch that added a nice sweet somewhat fresh/crunch component to an overall indulgent dish. So sad my photo came out blurry! ** Lemon pie: one of my favorites of the night next to the beef bourguignon. We were told the crust is gluten free made from crushed almonds, butter and sugar. The lemon layer was the perfect degree of tarte topped with a generous layer of mascarpone cream with a side of mango coulis. Loved the touch of candied tangerines on top for that extra citrus element. Since we're local to the area, can't wait to come back to try some of their other dishes, especially the other entrees and the foie gras special and bone marrow that everyone raves about!

Whenever I miss France, I go to A Food Affair! From the warm greeting upon arrival by Babette to the marvelous food cooked by Christian, this place is like going to see your French family who happen to live in Los Angeles. They have a nice selection of wine and several patio spaces (you can rent them for a private affair, which is what one friend did for a birthday). They have specials every night and I usually opt for the fish, like the branzino, or the lamb shank, which is so hearty that I usually take half of it home! I love their mushroom appetizer, all their salads, sometimes they have pâté, and they do snails (out of the shell). For regular menu items I would go with the bœuf bourguignon or the wild salmon with crispy calamari. I never really have room for dessert, but you can't go wrong with the crème brûlée or chocolate mousse. BTW, they are back to being open more days and hours now that the pandemic has settled.

What a charming neighbor French treat! While being displaced from the Altadena fire my temporary home is the area; I came across A Food Affair. Luckily at the time of my visit it was DineLA. The decor with different tables, mirrors and light fixtures really added to the experience. Mushroom tart, escargot, salmon, lamb terrine... all were excellent. I look forward to revisiting!

    Steak tartare (off menu special)

This was our second time at Food Affairs and we loved coming back. The steak tartare was a highlight. The chef was kind enough to prepare it for us even though it wasn't on the menu, and he came out afterward to introduce himself and say hello. The mushroom tourte is an absolute must order appetizer. Every dish was excellent. The staff was attentive and very accommodating. The ambiance is upscale yet relaxed. It's great that both times we didn't have to wait for a table on a Friday night especially for a restaurant serving food of this quality. We'll definitely be back again. Highly recommend!

A phenomenal dining experience from the delicious food, cozy ambiance and wonderful hospitality, this is a must try! Our favorite dishes were the mushroom torte, salmon calamari, beef stew and the lemon pie. However everything we tried was incredible. This family owned restaurant, owners and staff are so welcoming, we enjoyed talking to the chef too. We will definitely be back!

Roasted Bone Marrow, Mushroom Tourte x 2, and an extra order of French Onion Soup - all were delicious!!

A wonderful french dining experience! Owner Babette warmly welcomed us. The interior decor and outdoor seating area transport one to the countryside of southern France. Food was delicious and the service was great. Chef owner Christian Royère made a point to greet every guest table in between his busy kitchen time! The indoor seating was bar tops only and their tables are outside in the makeshift patio, since they are located in a shopping center with Yum Yum Donuts. We didn't love how in order to park in the lot we had to pay the $17 valet fee even though there were plenty of spaces. I feel like that service should only be mandatory during peak dining hours. Anyways, the host and hostess were both very nice and walked us to our table. The host/our waiter for the first half of the meal made some recommendations and shared what the daily special was. To drink, I had the Spritz which was good - nothing to write home about, but it got the job done. We started our meal with a fresh baguette and homemade butter which was divine. For our main meal, we shared the heirloom tomato salad, trout almandine, and "Big Mec" with frites. The heirloom salad - although simple - was refreshing and had a perfectly balanced dressing. The trout was the start of the show. Crispy skin, crispy almonds, and SWIMMING in butter. The Big Mec was also quite good, but I think at that point I was a bit too full to enjoy it. But the meat was cooked well, and the sauce they drizzle on top was tasty. No dessert since we were stuffed. It was truly an indulgent meal. Of the French restaurants I have had in LA, I'd say Petit Trois was memorable. I think if I were to go again I would visit their Sherman Oaks location solely based on the ambiance.

We were told the Big Mec was the move for a first visit. So rich, so delicious. I've honestly never had a burger quite in that category before. We had the steak frites too and loved it. The whole thing just felt like a great lunch. Taking our time, hanging at the bar, nowhere to rush off to. Only thing missing was a glass of wine, which I'll fix next time. Very excited we finally made it. Can't wait to come back.

The Little Door is known for their gorgeous outdoor seating under twinkly lights but be aware you cannot garuntee a spot there - only request. I appreciate that they have the option of a personalized dinner menu which is what my partner got for me, and they even bring you a large envelope so you can take the menu home. It took us some time to be greeted by our waitress. I felt the service was lacking. She was nice, but I felt like we were often forgotten. For our drinks I had a cucumber gin martini and my partner had the Casanova. Both were delicious! For our appetizer, we ordered the Piri-Piri shrimp. It was 4 pieces of shrimp lined up with small circles of flatbread in between each piece, seated on top of a smoky and flavorful sauce. We both loved it! For our main meal we ordered the couscous "Royale," fresh Papardelle pasta, and roasted carrots. The couscous came with one lamp chop, stewed lamb, merguez, and chicken - with a side of sliced almonds and dried apricot for topping, extra lamb stew sauce, and the most incredible harissa. I absolutely loved this dish, it was so flavorful. The pasta was a solid dish as well, and the roasted carrots were also fantastic. For dessert, we ordered the lava cake and I had Moroccan mint tea. The lava cake was well balanced with flavor and not overly sweet. The tea was fragrant, sweet, and the best way to end the meal. Overall I had a nice first experience at The Little Door. I don't think there's much left on the menu that I would want to try. I would love if they added more Moroccan-inspired dishes to the menu to make them stand out! But I feel like I would still come back, and I recommend it as a place for date night or to celebrate a birthday.

I just never realized where it was since I don't usually make it out to Hancock Park. Then one day, while I happened to be in the area, I stumbled upon it and had one of those "Wait...this is here?!" moments. You ever have one of those places you've wanted to visit forever, only to realize it was much closer than you thought? My first visit was actually for dessert after having a less-than-memorable lunch at Mish down the street. Unfortunately, I arrived later in the day and most of the pastry case had already been wiped out, leaving only a limited selection. The staff recommended the Dulce de Leche Cremadette ($6.75), and I'm glad they did. It was perfectly flaky, buttery, and sweet, with the dulce de leche tucked inside the pastry. The caramel reminded me of the caramel coating on a caramel apple. I also picked up some brownies at the staff's recommendation, and those were fantastic -- incredibly moist, rich, and delicious. Definitely a must-get. I was a little disappointed that I missed out on the majority of the pastry selection, but I was told that the pastries are made in limited batches each day and once they sell out, that's it. So if you're coming specifically for the pastries, get here early. Earlier this summer, I made the acquaintance of an OG Yelper, Joseph A., and we've been corresponding back and forth on Yelp. I happened to know that he's a regular at République, so I asked if he'd be interested in meeting me right when they opened. I figured if anyone knew what to order, it would be him. Joseph was incredibly kind and gracious enough to treat me to breakfast. I ordered his usual breakfast recommendation: the Regular Breakfast ($24), which comes with bacon steak, fingerling potatoes, a demi baguette, French butter, jam, and an egg prepared any style. Joseph went with the soft scramble, and I followed his lead. That was definitely the move. They really know how to cook eggs here. The soft scramble was absolutely divine -- creamy, delicate, and perfectly cooked. The bacon steak was a little on the salty side, but still very good. The demi baguette was excellent, especially with the French butter and jam. Honestly, I could have eaten several pieces of that baguette with the butter and jam alone. The fingerling potatoes were nicely seasoned and quite good on their own, but a few dashes of hot sauce really took them up another notch. I'll be honest: $24 is definitely on the pricey side for what you're getting, especially when you break down the individual components. That said, when you factor in the quality of the food, the setting, and the overall experience, I can understand why people are willing to pay it. We also shared several pastries, and every single one was excellent in its own right. I'm officially hooked on the pastries here. They just don't miss. Service was pretty good during my visit. One thing worth noting is that République adds a 4% surcharge to the bill to help cover healthcare for their staff. It's certainly something to be aware of when looking at the final bill. f you're looking for a quintessential LA brunch experience to take out-of-towners to, République is a great option. Just be prepared for potentially long lines, especially on weekends. I visited on a weekday morning over the summer, so I didn't personally experience the weekend crowds. My only real wait was at the pastry counter during my first visit. I've heard you can expect people lining up before they even open at 8AM, so plan accordingly. The cult following surrounding Walter and Margarita Manzke's restaurant/café is understandable. Between the food, pastries, atmosphere, and history of the building, there's a lot to appreciate here. And speaking of history, the building itself is pretty special. The property was built in 1928 by Charlie Chaplin. It became a restaurant in 1989 when chefs Mark Peel and Nancy Silverton transformed the space to open La Brea Bakery and Campanile. After Campanile closed in 2012, the building was renovated and modified to open up the space while returning it closer to the spirit of its original construction. République opened in 2013 and has been going strong ever since. Do yourself a favor and eat at République. Come for the food and pastries, but also take some time to appreciate the ambiance and the history of this incredible LA property. And whatever you do, get here early if you want the pastries. Once they're gone, they're gone! Don't walk--run to République.

The wine was super dry, but paired well with the mackerel [ ] Course 2 Cucumber, asian pear, lemon creme fresh, japanese plum jelly tooper and martini. This was a refreshing dish. I liked it a lot. [ ] Course 3 chablis, uni and scallop, spinach. My fav!!! For anyone who doesn't like the taste of uni, you can't tell it's uni. It was buttery and fabulous flavors. [ ] Course 4, sunflower pollen sake, poach salmon. Cream corn. Potato was salty. Salmon was ok. [ ] Course 5, red wine. Steak with ginger butter sauce, fingering potatoes. The steak was perfect!! It was wonderful. [ ] Course 6, liquor infused with mandarin and yuzu. Dessert yuzu bar. They also give us a burger to go in a cute little happy meal looking box. I found parking on the side street. But there's a lot across the street for $5/hr. Or valet, $12-15. This place also had wonderful date night vibes with low lights and real candles.

I was looking forward to trying this French & Japanese fusion spot. I love both cuisines and I can't wait to see how the chef can blend the two together. We were so lucky to find a parking spot right in front. No need to valet. We were there to celebrate a birthday. We were seated right away on the patio. I was afraid I'd be cold but it was ok with the covers. They also have heat lamps. We were very happy with everything we ordered, and we ordered a lot! Highlights were the rolls and uni toast. Delish! We honestly could have skipped the jidori chicken, we ordered one too many entrees. We would love to come back and try more dishes.

You sit basically in the market, which is fine. The chairs aren't super comfortable but that is the last of my complaints. Service is friendly and professional. The menu is full of delicious things. And the entire experience is just lovely. My friend's quiche and my croque monsieur were so fantastic. Presented beautifully. And both are offered with a choice of salad or fries. And yes, normally I would say salad. NOT HERE. Their fries are properly shoestring, fried exceptionally well and served (as they should be) with a choice of mayo or mustard - even ketchup. They are delicious. I had fresh Orange Juice that was amazing, and my friend got the sparkling lemonade. SO GOOD! I loved this so much. I cannot wait to come back here for one of their cheese boards and wine pairings after weekday shopping at the market. That sounds like an absolutely perfect evening.

I feel like the pesto sauce was a bit overwhelming. Would not order again. Unfortunately, the salmon plate was toooo oily for my liking. Every bite felt sooo heavy because of the amount of oil. My plate was soaked in oil & juices. The potato's that it comes served with were not touched by me. After one bite, I knew I couldn't eat any more of it. Plus, even if the potatoes were good, I think the salmon was so heavy that I couldn't stomach both. The stars come from the setting! The escargot is probably the best I've had. I loved how buttery it was and the snail itself was so fresh and tender. I'd definitely repurchase this on another visit. I even dipped some of the baguette bread (which had the best crunch!) into the butter and it was perfection! For our mains, we got the sea bass with lentils and the Alaskan halibut, and both were prepared perfectly down to taste and texture. Everything about its execution felt very intentional. The halibut was baked with the right amount of breading and the sea bass was pan seared to give that nice crispy texture to the skin. My only critique is I thought the lentils were a bit too overpowering because of the huge quantity, but honestly, everything else was amazing enough that I'm not bothered by it.

Food is always an area that I leave up to everyone's own taste. To me I felt some of the dishes needed more salt but I always enjoy my food from how the chef prepped it so I can try new dishes.
