Very fresh, very hot! These are my favorite qualities of a restaurant dish... they had both. They were also fairly fast. The staff was cheerful. Our server showed us how to wrap spring rolls with a smile, teasing us about how we did not do a good job with one of them. The fried rice was delicately flavored, with the sweetness of the fresh peas and fresh carrots shining through. My daughter said it had no flavor, and she corrected it with extra soy sauce. I think if your palate is used to salty Fried Rice, then you might not enjoy THIS fried rice, but I certainly did. The spring roll platter and the chicken fried rice fed three of us for about $60, with 1 iced tea snd 1 beer. I thought that was pretty reasonable. The parking situation is not great, and I've been here three times, and I still don't understand it. It's shared/not shared with a motel. There's signage threatening tow-aways, but no one seems to pay much attention. I met my Aunty and Uncle here tonight for dinner but sadly we ended up walking out. I was so looking forward to having a delicious dinner here tonight with them before they got on their flight, but service was so horrible we decided it wasnt worth it. The host Charlie sat us and took our drink orders and we waited and waited and waited. When my uncle tried to get his attention, he said he would be right with us and then proceeded to take the orders of a group of people who sat down way after us. It was chaotic. There seemed to be problems with orders too because we overheard him making sarcastic comments about the kitchen messing up orders. Then he seemed to be scolding one of the waiters. We waited a good half an hour, no drinks came to our table, we didnt even get a chance to order appetizers so needless to say we left very disappointed. I was very disappointed. When visiting maui, my friends and I wanted some pho and we saw this place on yelp with some great reviews, we thought yay lets try it out. But honestly I am giving this place 2 stars for 2 reasons. 1 they have good service - very friendly staff, 2 there's a parking lot. I come to this restaurant regularly, and they have consistently great food and friendly service. The baked chicken with its flavorful, perfectly crispy skin and tangy soy-vinegar dipping sauce is my favorite dish and to-die for. I also love the stuffed tofu and green papaya salad. Since they provided us cardboard breakfast sandwiches on the flight, we were starving. My cousin was craving pho so we yelped and found a few places once we landed but decided to go with what was close to the airport. If you don't follow your map, this place would definitely be easy to pass up. There were no signs except for when you actually turn into the parking lot and see the front of the restaurant. This reminded me of a little hole in the wall place and I didn't mind because it usually means they will have authentic, good food. We ordered calamari and egg rolls for appetizer. The calamari was okay, it lacked flavor but they provided just the normal sauce that you would use for a noodle bowl or rice bowl which was great for the calamari. The egg rolls were good. I'm usually not a fan of egg rolls from Vietnamese restaurants but this one was good. It came on a bed of vermicelli noodles with lettuce and mint so you can make a lettuce wrap. We enjoyed it. For entrees we ordered the pork chop over rice and the oxtail pho. The pork chop what different from what we are used to at home. The flavors different as well but it is delicious. I really liked it and would recommend it. Also, the oxtail soup was good as well, we asked for extra spicy and it was delicious. You know the meat is good is when it falls off the bone and yes this meat fell off the bone and was moist and flavorful. My wife and I were running around Kahalui/Wailuku running errands and decided to find some vermicelli; and boy did we find it! We both got the "Lemongrass & Curry Chicken Vermicelli and were not disappointed! Not the standard vermicelli I am used to. The curry was definitely hotter than I anticipated, but it was an enjoyable counterpoint to the refreshing salad and noodle parts of the meal. This place appears to be a local standby and gets positive reviews in the tourist guides, but my experience was mixed -- generally good food but oddly sketchy service. I walked in and the host pointed me to a table, which turned out not to have been cleaned. As I'm sitting down and looking a bit dismayed, he realized his goof and casually pointed me to another table. I had fried spring rolls as an appetizer and a rice noodle dish with shrimp and calamari -- both good. I'd give the spring rolls a B and the noodles an A-. Again, the service was odd. One person took my order, another brought the spring rolls and a 3rd brought the noodle dish --barely two minutes after the appetizer had arrived. Came here on a whim because it was rainy and we were in the mood for pho. The parking lot was confusing, so we ended up parking on the street. The interior is nicely renovated; I definitely wasn't expecting it to be as nice as it is inside the restaurant. The guy who took our orders was weird. Like borderline rude. I think he was trying to be funny, but it just came off as weird and slightly rude. I can't explain it, but it was like he was kind of mocking us? Or himself? By using this strange accent. Very confusing. I will say that he was attentive though and that the food was great! I ordered the "special". It wasn't a special. It was on the menu for the same price, but whatever. It was the duck noodle soup and the soup reminded me of my childhood. My grandma used to make shoyu pork... Chinese style with tons of star anise. The soup kind of tasted like that. It was very flavorful and the duck was good. I did order it with rice noodles, thinking it would be the look funn variety, but it was pho noodles. Oh well. I'd come back for more duck noodle with regular egg noodles next time. Or to try something else. My friends' pho looked good, too. Which leads me to my last point. I was confused as to what kind of cuisine was served here. There was definitely a mix of Vietnamese and Chinese food and the server's weird accent didn't give me a clue. Saigon Cafe is probably the best Vietnamese food joint in Maui. Coming from a family that owned and operated its own Vietnamese restaurant and catering services, I can't help but be a little more critical and compare the food here to what I grew up with. This place has a very wide selection of dishes far beyond the standard "pho" and rice dishes like most Vietnamese places on the island carry. Some of the dishes even give me the "ratatouille" feels but of course, they're not completely spot on but they are damn close! This could be because of the limited ingredients they have available on the island or the quality they have to sacrifice because the cost of said ingredients is exponentially higher. Regardless of that, I really have to tip my hat to them for being able to provide such a lengthy menu even though they're limited in resources out here. They offer some of the usual staples you'd find in a regular Vietnamese restaurant - pho, rice dishes, spring rolls, and bun. In addition to these staples, they also offer chicken curry, duck noodle soup and other non standard dishes that you wouldn't typically see on a menu unless you were dining at a mom and pop shop where the matriarch of the family is cooking away in the back. The prices are much higher but so is everything else in Maui so it should be expected. If you absolutely have to have Vietnamese food in Maui, I'd recommend Saigon Cafe. read more

The place was hard to find (hidden), but once you are inside. It is clean and nice. The servers are funny but sometimes a little swamped. Our drinks took a little but we got them. This is our last stop before going to the airport enroute to our next destination. This place rocks. Very clean, nice decor, friendly staff and the food very authentic and DELICIOUS. You must try the fried spring rolls -- probably the best I have ever had. Wrap it in the romaine lettuce, rice noodle and mint leaf -- then dip in the sauce. We ordered more even though we had our main meal -- just too good. The pho broth was just what we needed. So very good and you can taste that it was cooked for hours and hours. Some places taste like water, not this place!! The pork chops with rice and egg was a first. That too was so good. My guess everything on the menu is EXCELLENT. I have experienced the same problem as few others on yelp. The food was good. My mom and I ordered the clay pot with meat and seafood, and spicy soup with shrimp. The spicy soup had pineapples in it...which is too Hawaiian for me. The waiter (seemed to be the owner) was very pushy towards making us order one of the most expensive items off their menu, saying that the particular item goes better with one of the dishes we were going to order. He was somewhat obnoxicious. We ordered noodle for the spicy soup, instead of rice. However rice came out so I told the person who brought out the food that we ordered noodle. Then he started making face and yelling "No! Rice!! No!". Clearly he didn't speak much English but yelling is not gonna change the fact that I ordered noodle lol I think this place needs a better customer service skill. And like others say, this place is very hard to find, since it has no sign outside. We ordered just two items and the bill was $35 for lunch without tip. My favorite stop on Maui when visiting my in-laws. The food is delicious. There is one man that works there that absolutely cracks us up every time, I am not sure if he is an owner or manager but he has an Eagle smoking a J tattooed on his arm. He always greets the guest and follows up on the food orders making each visit highly entertaining. I came here at least 3 times. The first time I came here when I first got off the plane and wanted to find some Asian food to eat. The place was easy to find. There was ample parking (without paying" even though the place was half full on a Saturday! (if you are familiar with Maui, most places are empty on the weekend). I was uncertain of what to order as the menu has so many good stuff that I could recognize (I grew up near Little Saigon in Orange County so I have been exposed to Asian food as a whole and Vietnamese food specifically). The owner came by to greet me and suggested a "special" plate in which he said I would not be disappointed. I agreed. And I was not disappointed. As a matter of fact, I was surprised at how good it was! I love this place. Service was prompt. The owner is very nice and funny. I came back at least 2 more times before I left the island.
