Another Yelp victory! I usually have to drive over to Long Beach to get a decent haircut and thanks to Yelp I located this barbershop that is close to home-- The haircut was quality, my hair was cut by Chaina and my son's by Patrick. Patrick was really professional and handled a 2 yr old with ease. What really separates them is that they keep a professional environment and that was obvious from all of the kids that were flowing through the shop. The language was clean and they keep things organized, if you are a walk in they will work you in, I got in and out in a hour, which is awesome for a Saturday AM! Also for $28 for the two of us, that is a steal nowadays. I am still loyal to my original barbershop but I will come back here from time to time-I recommend! read more

Went in for a beard trim/line up on Thursday the 10th; I came out and seen how uneven it was and immediately went to Walmart, purchased a new razor and shaved my beard nearly off. I had been coming to this shop for awhile. At first, it was great and there was no problem but then recently things began to change after I graduated from college. The owner USED to be professional but when booking an appointment, he started to become more and more belligerent and acted as if I was wasting his time. He ranted on and on about "his other businesses and employees and meetings." It seems as if Pierre became more and more nasty every time I went in and he was BLATANT about it (remarks). He had a serious problem with me. For some reason, I think that he thought that I was a "punk." I would not recommend going to this place because it would appear if you are not the "right kind" of thug-acting, slang-pushing black man, he won't relate to you at all. I am African American and let me tell you: I found his attitude to be rude and off-putting and based on some of the reviews here: stereotypical and in some instances, racist. I am always down to support my fellow African Americans but I refuse to be treated like trash while doing so. This man has CRAZY notions on race, sexuality and even just a negative disposition! It is denigrating coming to an appointment with him! Terrible place and terrible owner and this is indicative as to why so may black owned businesses have issues with (1) maintaining employees and (2) staying open. Sheer syncopated ignorance and TOXIC black masculinity at its best. AVOID this place at all costs! read more

I have just found my sons new barber. I have been taking my son to Cool Cuts 4 Kids (where they charge me $20 for a basic hair cut). My friend suggested I try A-Unique but I was a little hesitant cuz I didn't know how he would handle getting his hair cut in a barber shop seeing that he hates hair cuts but I was surprised at how patient he was. Juan D cut my sons hair and he was amazing to work with. He took his time to make my son comfortable and hooked him up. I love the whole atmosphere inside. You feel like your part of the movie Barber Shop. The men act like family and treat every customer like they've been going there for years. The haircut only cost my $13 (did I mention I was paying $20 before) I will definitely be coming back here from now on and I would highly recommend. read more

It was my first time, but I was not a customer here's why. First time customers please read: 1. I walked in was not greeted at all, I sat down, two other customers come in looking for a cut , both were greeted properly. Not sure if it matters, but everyone that was in there at the moment was black, I was the only Hispanic, and the two other customers that were greeted were black. 2. After waiting 20 minutes and yet to be greeted. I got up and asked one of the barbers how much was a fade "he replied "$16". To me for a simple low fade that's too expensive. I usually pay between 10-12 dollars and not including tip. 3. After 15 minutes , new customer walks in; looks like a regular was looking for a different barber then takes a seat. 5 minutes later one of the barbers freed up , first seat to the left side. Asked a guy behind me if he was looking for a cut , he said no , goes over my head points to the guy that just walked 5 minutes ago and tells him "I got you bro" I got up and left, i didn't care if it was a black barber shop, if I got a good cut I could've been a regular even if the price was a little steep. This is a review based on my husband's experience (for all the wives and men out there looking for a barber shop this should be useful). This barber shop contains an old school feel to it. They make reservations only on Mondays. All the other days of the week people come in and just socialize and network. They have a pool table people can play with while they wait for their turn. They also have a TV. My husband said that the owner was the one who cut his hair and trimmed his beard. He did a good job and pretty much did what my husband wanted. Also the guy was clean (when he dropped his clippers he put them in the cleaning solution and did not just keep working with them). Total: $25 for hair and beard. (cash only) read more

Background: After moving from San Bernardino to Orange County it took me awhile to find a barber out here. It's not that I couldn't find one, it's because I was afraid to let any random person cut my hair. One weekend I was sick on a haircut week (every 2 weeks). So, I had three options: 1) Drive all the way to San Bernardino while sick. 2) Go another week without getting my haircut. 3) Suck it up and find a barbershop closer to home. I obviously opted for choice 3, for the simple fact that I my hair is completely untamable during the 3rd, 4th, and 5th weeks after a cut. After spending my entire Saturday morning searching for a barber I finally decided that this was the one to go to. And I'm glad I did. (If you mention the commercial they have on youtube, you get a $2 discount). Location: The place is located in a small strip mall on the corner of Dale and Lincoln. If you're heading East on Lincoln, make a left onto Dale and then a right into the first entrance. If you're heading West, your safest option (if there's a car coming out) is to make a right onto Dale and a right into the first entrance. There's a Farmer Boy's on the SW corner of these same cross streets, so when you come in you can get your spot in line, then go get something to eat. There's also a dry-cleaners, a pet groomer, a nail shop, and a hair salon all in the same strip mall as the barbershop. So you can get your clothes cleaned, while you, your girl, and your dog are all getting all getting cleaned up. Atmosphere: You may or may not like the atmosphere of the shop depending on your own preferences. Personally, I thought it was great. They have two TVs in there: I go in on Saturdays so it's usually college football. They're a bunch of younger people so the conversations are more appealing to me. One of the barbers is incredibly loud, but I think he adds a lot of flavor to the shop. Again, this may not be to your liking, but it was cool to me. Once you go a couple times you really get used to him. They have wide assortment of music always playing ranging from old tunes you haven't heard in awhile to new tunes you haven't heard yet (genre: generally rap/hip hop). There are CD covers up on the wall of local artists which shows that they, in their own way, are showing support for the people of the community - a plus. A warning: for those of you that mind, the place is uncensored. If you are not used to expletives, you should prepare yourself. Customer Service: I walked in and was greeted by the barber closest to the door. He asked me if I was here for a certain barber and I told him it was my first time here. So he told me we'll get you in as soon as possible so feel free to have a seat anywhere. So I sat down and the first barber that came available, I was in the chair. The Cut: The person who cut my hair is named Rich. He introduced himself to me and started talking to me about where I lived, where I'm from, etc. It wasn't invasive, just trying to get to know his customer and make small talk. He asked me what kind of cut I wanted and I told him bald fade with a chinstrap. He took it in steps to make sure he didn't cut my hair too low and that it was coming out the way it should. Basically, long story short, he cut my hair exactly how I wanted it cut. The next time I came he remembered my story (not my name - but then again it took my old barber 3 years to figure that one out) and the cut I wanted. He wasn't too sure so he took it in stride, and again, my hair came out exactly how I wanted. The third time (4 weeks after the second time), it was the same way, except this time he remembered my name and my cut. Save for a couple times, I've been going ever since. The only time I don't go is when I'm going to San Bernardino on a haircut weekend, and it would be more convenient for me to go to my old barber while out there. Otherwise, I stay my butt in Orange County. Overall: The barbers know how to do what they are there to do: cut hair. They're professionals and it reflects in how their cuts come out. Any type of hair, they can cut it how you want it. If you want designs in your hair they can do that. If you want a 9-5 white collar cut, they can do that too. I've seen many different nationalities, ages, and styles of people and hair in that shop. I don't like flashy cuts, but was still very impressed with the ones I've seen here. So if this is the type of atmosphere you think you'd like, and if this is in your area (or even if you want to make the drive) then I definitely recommend them. You can go to any barber in the shop and you will be pleased with your cut. I continue to go only to Rich not only because he does an excellent job, but also out of loyalty as a customer. However, if it were necessary, I would go to any one of the others without hesitation. A-Unique is my new barbershop and will remain this way for as long as possible. read more

Worst barbers early. The man way in the back is the absolute best not sure if he is the manager or owner. Trust, the other barbers are all equally untalented. They do use a lot of profanity and the N word is every other word said. Granted I was uncomfortable, but did not ask them to hold off on the language as children and women were present. If you are an African American, who is new to the OC looking for a good barber shop, this place isn't it. At best, this place is a hair salon. This "barber shop" is not at all what black owned barber shops are and have been historically, for the community. I recently went in to check this place out for my self and my younger brother and I and I had a horrible experience with the owner of the shop, Pierre Dotson. In my exchange with the owner, Pierre Dotson made stereotypical and prejudice comments, about black communities and black people in Los Angeles, CA. Most of the comments he made were borderline the comments that Uncle Ruckus makes on the show "The Boondocks". The impression that I received from him was that I was waisting his time and he was losing money, because I was not a paying customer the day I came in. However, my brother and I WERE POTENTIAL customers. As someone, who has worked for Nordstrom for years, this is the worst customer service and level of unprofessionalism that I have experienced. The irony is the owner thinks he is better and more professional than black owned barber shops in the "LA ghettos", as he puts it, because of his "perspective." Before finding this shop, I found a Chicano/Latino owned barber shop called, Faded in Santa Ana. The hairstyles and designs in that barber shop are so much better than the styles that were showcased in this one. My brother and I will be definitely going to Faded. Save your time. Save your money. I was in town for a conference and my buddy and I desperately needed a cut. We almost went to a barber shop close to where we were staying, but decided to make the 20 minute drive to A-unique since it's primarily a black barber shop. We were so glad we made the drive to go here! Spencer gave me a CLEAN fade. The thing that makes this shop special is the atmosphere. Took my 3yr old son here about 6 months ago. Guy in 1st chair on left cut his hair. Hair cut was fine buuuuuut.........he ain't give us what we asked for. If I ask for a taper I don't want you to give him a fade. If I say take it down to a #5 an you take it don to 3, that's a problem. Didn't make a big deal, let him know, never again. Called today, asked who was in. Guy named people, I said as long as it's not the guy in 1st chair cuz he was garbage. I said how bout you? He said he can get me an appointment with him at 1:30pm. Best Barbershop in OC FIRST of all it's a Barbershop if you have never been to the shop before don't be afraid to ask one of the barbers to get a cut. Or they will just all think you know who you want and are just waiting your turn. If they are busy they won't always have time to ask who's a walk-in. CONSEQUENTLY You might be waiting fir nothing and wind-up without a cut. SECOND The barber's are all chill, me personally I like Ernie or"Eman"as they call him. Spencer is another good barber and the Pierre or "P" cuts astoundingly as well but he doesn't do most walk-ins, a lot of his are appointed. But if you ask for him he will either recommend someone to fit your time-frame or he will squeeze you in. He's all the way in the back on the left Eman is right before him. Spencer is the first chair as soon as you walk in. They have TVs for sports and there always jamming music. Also there a nail place(next-door) while I get my cuts I send my lady to get her mani- pedi. CONSEQUENTLY You look nice and your lady or lady friends plus it earns you cool points towards some "wink wink" THIRD/FINALLY It's a clean shop family atmosphere. At-least while kids are around. Hehe The barbers are all grateful for your patronage the cut more than just African-American hair even though it is African-American owned and primary customers from what I have seen. They cut all types of hair of any ethnic background and also when you become a regular they do a bit of teasing which is why I come and just sit sometimes, if you can freestyle they have a Mic for you so if you want to practice in front of a small audience and get a review this is your stop. They have also been in the OC weekly OC best book They've also participated in Vegas Barber Competitions!! They also have a Domino table in the back ,I know this has no bearing on the shop.
