MY GOD. I don't know why I haven't discovered this place earlier. After doing some shopping at Don Quijote, I was super hungry and decided to try this restaurant on the way out. I thought, hey why not? I ordered the garlic chicken and mochiko chicken combo. The mochiko chicken was pretty good, but I was blown away by their garlic chicken. IT WAS THE BEST GARLIC CHICKEN I'VE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE. And I don't say that a lot. As a garlic fanatic, I've had garlic chicken plates from all over downtown and none of them really were garlicy enough for me or have really been that great, in my opinion. I'm still not over this one place downtown that had this deep fried, sweet flavored chicken and had the audacity to call it garlic chicken. My girlfriend, whose also health conscious, ordered the cheeseburger and fries combo (ironic right?). Apparently, they make their hamburgers homemade with 95% lean meat. She enjoyed it, especially because it didn't leave a messy nasty mayonnaisey on her hands like a lot of burgers do. They gave a pretty good amount of fries too. I am personally not a big fan of the outdoor food court environment that much, but it was definitely worth it for their relatively cheap prices. They're located on the same strip mall as Don Quijote. I really like their Ono Chicken and that they give you the option of brown rice. If you like breakfast food at anytime of the day, this place is for you. They have an extensive breakfast menu. Love their spam and egg sandwich. Okay, this place is really more of a 2.5, but that's not really something to be proud of. My mom never bragged about me getting 4th place in anything, and that happened a lot. Pros: Variety. You get the run of the mill plate lunch selection. Katsu, BBQ mix plate, ahi (garlic, etc), mochiko chicken, beef curry, beef stew, beef anything. In fact, I get the distinct feeling from the wink I get from the older lady who takes my order that she can cook anything. Also you can get brown rice instead of white for free (that's also a con - reference "Cons"). Cons: Often the wait is longer than I'd expect for the time it requires for a plate lunch to be cooked. Additionally, the brown rice, if its still available since they run out randomly at night, is a big soggy. Portion size is also not the most pleasant if you're expecting a heaping portion of whatever it is you decided to order. The bottom line: The nearest L&L is not that far. Don Quijote has a great selection of bentos and sushi. If you want Korean BBQ, Palama's is around the corner. Shoot, even Home Bar takeout is better. But if you really got nothing else to look forward to and you really like the first letter of the alphabet, this place will do the trick. read more

Worst Korean BB ever. Ordered a kalbi and mochiko chicken plate for $14. I've though it was a little pricy, but maybe the the BBQ was that good...wrong. Opened the foam container to find a mound of rice, a small, thin slice of kalbi with three bones and a bunch of small popcorn mochiko chicken bites. I bought this plate for my two boys to share. They were still hungry and don't get me started on the taste. Don't support a business that over charges for hardly any food that wasn't anything good to begin with. This place sucks. The garlic ahi/mahi mahi special is nothing more than two tiny filets of fish - overcooked - on a massive bed of white rice, which tasted good, but practically no vegetables. A fan and loyal points member is disappointed today. Not the food, but the Service. A new cashier is not flexible or is just following procedures but is bad for service. I requested a 3 item combo to change one item to a item within the combo for double order. Thus I wanted bbq chicken and two orders of bbq beef instead of a 3rd item of short ribs. I was told NO!!! I offered to pay more if it cost more which I did not see it would. Would it be different if I ordered the two combo and request for extra order of one of the items and pay for it? Language barrier to what I was requesting or strict rules that does not cater to the customer? I do not think I am being unreasonable especially willing to pay. This review is dated 04/21/2022 so it's in the context of government laws on restuarants, high inflation, material shortages, labor shortages, shrinking profit margins to conduct restraurants, etc. I eat out pretty much a lot, so I depend on having food vendors available for me. Bottom Line: I am grateful as I am sure many business owners are doing their best at least most of the time. So, yeah, the cost is much higher today and generally I expect some "shrinkflation" in portions. If portions are generous or at least on par with my memories of the 1970's (strange how we compare food portions with the past!), I think that would be exceptional. That being said, here's my review: Regular Beef Curry Plate has the familiar taste I expected from "Loco Moco or L&L". The mac salad is fresh, chilled, flavorful and satisfying because it has pieces of fresh diced celery which is delicious. The portions were okay, quite controlled, not excessive. Overall flavor was very good (as I was hoping) but more carrots and potatoes, to less pieces of meat. The white rice was perfect to my liking. The cashier/order taker was courteous, polite, prompt in her manner. I received my order for take out in about 15-minutes. I would eat here again. There wasn't much to eat around the area so I decided to get some chicken Katsu. For 9 bucks and something i think it's a good portion. The mac and the rice all stuffed into a plate to go. But the fact that they left me hanging kinda ticked me off. After 30 min waiting for my food while everyone behind me got their food, I asked if my order was forgotten, I didn't get any apology and had me wait for another 15 min without another word. Note that this review is 5 stars for a plate lunch level restaurant. This place was never on my go to list for plate lunch simply because the don quihote area is especially crazy to drive in with all the fobs. But when I'm in the area, I don't mind stopping in to get some tasty plates that are much cheaper than the zippys around the block. It's a Chinese business so expect to be served accordingly. The people manning the register are usually friendly and helpful. The grilled garlic chicken had been my go to for nearly ten years and the portions and taste has not swayed from when I first started to eat there. If my memory serves correct, the price has been pretty much the same too. $8.19 for a full plate. The orders can come out a little slow, but I'm fine with getting a freshly cooked product. Just be aware if you are on break the time needed for some items. All in, it's a good plate lunch place. read more

So we were walking around and I wanted to check out Don Quijote just to see what it was like. In the back of my mind I also planned to grab a bite at Santouka - I was even excited that they had a location here. So we walked around the store - perfect for goofy Hawaiian souvenirs to bring back home to the mainland. Then we decided to eat and took a walk outside where all the different restaurants were. We passed by Santouka and it was actually a sit down restaurant and not a food court service window - that, the fact that they are cash-only, and the fact that I've had it before and they have a location in San Diego which I visit often made me decide to take a pass. Instead I decided to get a combo plate at AAA Local BBQ. Had to chuckle at the name. Didn't those kinda names go out with those huge phone books we used to have to thumb through to find things like restaurants? That kinda name would get you listed near the beginning of the restaurants section but nowadays people are more likely to search google, yelp, foursquare, etc. Maybe they're just old school like that. No matter. I ordered mochiko chicken and pork adobo. Hadn't had mochiko chicken in years. This is strictly local food and even Hawaiian places on the mainland are unlikely to have it. That combined with pork adobo that I suddenly also wanted plus macaroni salad promised some totally ono grinds. Ok. This place might be just diner level in quality. Not the best pork adobo and maybe even the mochiko chicken wasn't as good as when a girlfriend from years ago made it for me - but the combo of all things combined and being able to eat it in the early evening on a bench outside Don Quijote facing the parking lot while people watching - a simple thing like this made me quite content. Service - well, they take your order, take your money and then call out when it's ready - that's all there is to it so you can't really mess that up. I came to the counter at 10 minutes to 9 asking when they closed because I wanted to pick up a few items from Don Quixote first and didn't feel it would be appropriate to take my plate of food with me into the store. He replied"9:00," but offered to hold my food for me until I returned. It took me almost a half hour, but he cheerfully handed me my meal, casually remarking that I had gotten some shopping done. What he didn't know was that his kind gesture meant a lot to me as I am on Oahu for only a few days visiting a sick relative in the hospital, and am staying in a nearby hotel that is a huge disappointment, old and in dire need of renovation to where I hesitate to bring food as I am afraid cockroaches might come out--yes, the hotel is that bad. So, I enjoyed my generous portion of BBQ chicken with shredded cabbage, 2 scoops rice, and Mac salad--$9.20--along with the Açaí juice I purchased from Don Quixote in my rental car with the engine on and air conditioning going. I used to frequent this place more often in the past, when I worked in the area. I sometimes go here if I'm shopping at Don Quijote. This place has a reasonably-priced, tasty breakfast special, with good portioning too. Today I craved seafood so I went with the ahi (spicy, garlic or shoyu) and mahi mahi combo, which was scribbled on the specials board in the front. It should be noted that I don't eat a lot of seafood, and only crave it sometimes, and without too much of a strong fishy flavor. On to the food. I got the spicy ahi option, which turned out to be just fried ahi with sriracha on it. It was still tasty though. The mahi mahi was amazing! It had a light texture and full flavor. I loved it. Their food is always satisfying, delicious with reasonable prices. The specials are there in case you can't choose just one item. I will be back to try their other items, including the loco moco which is cheaper and probably bigger portioned than Zippy's. read more
