The desk clerk at our hotel sent us here. This very clean little diner had exceptionally friendly servers and great food. The beef vegetable soup was thick with veggies and tender beef cubes. The broth was full of the flavor of the ingredients. Fresh warm rolls came with the meal. One of us had beef tips the other grilled chicken breast. Both meal servings were large. My family and I have only had breakfast here but it was really good. The restaurant isn't large so there is usually a small wait but it is definitely worth the wait. The biscuits are really good and the food is definitely better quality than the chain breakfast places. Abel himself delivered our breakfast! Outstanding staff, very friendly and attentive. Clean facility with comfortable seating arrangements. I've eaten a couple items off the breakfast menu including breakfast tacos and their speciality, Eggs Benedict. I loved the Eggs Benedict and thought the hollandaise sauce was particularly tasty. Even though the restaurant was very busy I was grateful for the server's attentiveness and helpfulness. There are a lot of "regulars" who dine there, and I heard several of them addressed by name when they first walked into the restaurant. Overall, a terrific diner! read more

The people were nice, service was fast enough, location is convenient, but I would not call this establishment a diner ... Living on the East Coast and having the pleasure of spending much time in NY and NJ (diner capital), I'm accustomed to a menu with many options and breakfast being served 24/7 ... not the case here. The menu options are pretty limited and the food was so-so (we were served precooked, bagged fries ala "Ore Ida" or some other brand). Again, this place isn't bad, but it's not a "diner". read more

Unfortunately after going to Abels for over 20yrs I was very disappointed in our experience at the new location. I have never ever had bad service but this time it was horrible. We asked for rolls over 5 times and the waitress kept saying they were coming however we could plainly see ALL other waitresses getting them from the food pass. Just NOT OURS!!! Then after waiting 35 min for our food my husbands fish was RAW! And to top it all off the ppl that sat down a total of 4 min next to us got there food in like 5 min after we did! The ONLY reason I would give 3 stars is because I know Abel himself and know he does not do business this way-- sometimes expanding is the downfall for a wonderful place read more

The old place was 5× better , the food was always hot and fresh and made ya wanna slap ur momma been over 20 times since they relocated to me its gone down hill and so has service its just not the same the quality and freshness of the food.. I got a take out order on Saturday night for my wife and I and it was fantastic. I live around 9 miles from this place and will definitely go back. I ordered the chopped sirloin pepper steak , baked potato and green beans and it all was great. My wife enjoyed her meal too, although I don't remember what she had. LOL. My husband and I deliberately waited until after 1:15 p.m. to try this place for lunch. We were seated in a booth timely enough. Then the trouble started. The waitress took our order, and asked what drinks we wanted, and then whether we wanted a soup or salad. We ordered one of each. We got the drinks from her promptly, but then she returned with two more drinks and wondered who had served us the first two. We said it was her, so she apologized and gave another table the drinks she had on her tray. Then after about 20 minutes, our food arrived. We told her we thought we would get the soup and salad first, but would still like her to bring them. She apologized again and told us she was having a horrible day and would be right back with the soup and salad. She then interrupted us every 2 minutes asking if everything was alright. We said yes, but couldn't really carry on much of a conversation because she was consistently interrupting our meal. When we finished and needed our check, she was nowhere to be found. We finally spotted her on the phone and waved at her to get her attention. She headed to the back of the restaurant and totally ignored us at this point. We went to the cashier and told her what we had ordered so we could pay and leave. She apologized also and asked if we wanted TO LEAVE A TIP ON OUR CREDIT CARD! We said NO, as it was not earned. Life is too short to eat mediocre food and experience this kind of service. We deserve better AND SO DOES THE PUBLIC! a truly awful dining experience! read more

This restaurant used to be in a much smaller location up the street from its current one. At that location, the food was tremendous. Tasted fresh, was plentiful and delicious. Since moving to this larger location, its gone way down hill. The vegetables are mushy and from a can and everything else is just bland. It seems like they compromised quality for more business. read more

I've been a fan of Abel's for years as it was about the only restaurant when we moved here in 1996. Now Abel's has moved and the new location is so much easier to get to and more seating so no long wait. Finally tried Abel's at their new location off IH-35 frontage Rd in Schertz. I ordered Hamburger Steak as my entree . Was a decent portion and pretty tasty. My husband ordered the Chicken fried steak which he liked. Nicely cooked and seasoned with gravy on the top. We both had salads which were basically just lettuce, one small cherry tomato but I'm not complaining because the lettuce was fresh and crisp. My baked potato was small but cooked appropriately. My other side was green beans which were small, overcooked and way too much liquid. I could barely get the beans, what little was there onto my fork. My husband had green beans as well as mashed potatoes. Again a small portion and a little bland. The one item which really perplexed me were the homemade yeast rolls, which by the way, we had to ask our server for after she brought rolls to all of her tables but ours. They were small oblong shaped and slightly hard. Not at all what yeast rolls should look like or taste. my husband and i have been eating at Abels Diner for years as we live in Schertz; when at the old location, we would stand in the long line and wait, as the food was worth it. we hoped when they moved into their new, larger location, the food would remain just as good. on our 2nd visit at the new location, we were extremely disappointed. i ordered one of my favorite plates, the grilled chicken breast which comes with soup or salad, 1 veggie, and optional baked potato (loaded of course). with the first bite of the chicken breast I knew immediately it was not up to Abel's standards. I had to spit out the first bite as it felt i had bit into a big piece of fat; my second bite was equally as bad. I couldn't eat anymore; I asked my husband to taste it and he said it was "rubbery" and indicated a poor quality of meat. I normally take any leftover chicken to my dogs, but I didn't feel I could take the leftover chicken to them that night. When our waitress came over and asked if there was anything else, I told her I always order the grilled chicken plate when I come in and that night my chicken was not edible, it tasted and felt "chewy/rubbery". She responded, "well, we do have a new grill cook who's new...." and walked away. When she returned with our bill, she had not even mentioned our complaint to the kitchen staff/manager/owner and she didn't offer any discount on our meal. We left without leaving a tip and we haven't been back since. Which is a shame, as we really enjoyed the home style cooking Abel's offers. I think the new restaurant, while it can accommodate many more people than their old location has lost some of it's ambience and unfortunately, the food quality has also suffered. It may be a while before we try it again, if ever. read more
