Delicious! Authentic Middle Eastern cuisine in humble Trumbull. On a date with my hubs, we shared Layla's mixed grill - more than enough for 2 people. Everything lamb was tender, juicy, perfectly grilled. The chicken kabab was a little dry but the super garlicky white sauce makes everything better. Hummus was excellent and homemade pita was served warm. The rice and lentils were on point. The gentleman behind the counter says everything is made from scratch just like mom's cooking. Food was excellent! Very fresh, decent portion... one order is enough for two people! Even the presentation was great. My only issue... and its a big one. I let my 5 year old taste the hummus... she didn't even swallow it before she broke out in hives and ended up in an ambulance to the ER. I was told there are no nuts in the hummus only chick peas, lemon, and sesame. I think items such as hummus need to be labeled if there is the possibility of an allergic reaction. Also, I'm not totally sold on the Ingredients provided to me, but I'll need to inquire further. read more

Let me start by saying that I'm of Lebanese ancestry and very picky when it comes to Mediterranean food. But this place nails it all, the hummus and baba ghannouj are perfect, the Shawarma (chicken or lamb) are fantastic, those who love the garlic paste/cream will certainly enjoy the perfect recipe... I'm come to love eating here regularly more than once a week and brought co-workers and friends and family. Never a disappointing sandwich or plate. Great "toom" (garlic sauce), kofta (the vegetarian kofta was even better than the meat kofta), and excellent housemade pita bread, but everything else was okay, not a rave. The falafel is not worth the calories or effort, very bland. And it's super-expensive, considering portion size and what it is (veg, chick peas, some meat). I married into a Lebanese-Egyptian family and I can tell you that neither the taste nor the prices at Layla's are what they should be. But if you crave Middle Eastern-like food and don't want to make it yourself, I suppose Layla's is an option. Just don't think it's really representative of how delicious Middle Eastern food can be. Think "steakhouse burger vs.McDonald's." MacD's is okay sometimes but... Johnny replied to my review and he is correct, every Middle Eastern cuisine is different and it's not fair for me to say Layla's isn't terrific just because I'm more accustomed to another kind of Middle Eastern taste. I would like to say right now that Layla's is very clean, the food is well prepared and looks great, the people who run the shop are all lovely, polite, and accommodating. But I stand by my assessment of price: too expensive. Again, I understand they have high rent and the cost of doing business is commensurately high. I cannot frequent this establishment as a result but if that doesn't make a difference to you, please enjoy the food and the quality of the preparation. We ordered the chicken sharwama platter, stuffed eggplant, lamb kabob salad, and falafel. Everything was well seasoned and cooked perfectly. But Johnnie and the Trumbull crew have made this an elevated experience for those visiting their Trumbull location. The shawarma is an immediate standout for me, though the other meats are amazing in their own right. The fresh food and ingredients brings out tastes which can't be compared to other comparable restaurants. And their GreenLeaf menu provides an excellent compliment to their traditional menu, with delicious options for those who may have a more traditional palette. As the icing on the cake, I'm grateful to the staff here for truly treating me and my family like their own with every visit. My falafel wrap was soooooo amazing - - the wrap itself was delicately thin, devoid of doughy overlapping sides or ends. Yet, both halves stayed held together for every bite yo the very lady. (How do they do that?!) The falafel was seasoned perfectly, and was so tender. The sandwich had a perfect balance of texture and flavors. The wrap was seared on the grill yet remained greaseless. I tasted the beef from my husband's platter and it was absolutely tender and delicious and, again, seasoned perfectly. It was served on a bed of lentils and rice and served with a fresh side of salad. All this mouth-watering food was beautifully plated, too. I can tell both the owner and kitchen staff takes a lot of pride in everything they make. It was no different for the beef kibbe--it was flash-fried and seasoned well...again, perfect!
