This review was for their Sunday high tea. I was very excited to attend with a friend who is also a big tea fan. Reservations fill up quickly, and you pay ahead of time at about $47/pps, gratuity included. It's nice not to have to collect a check at the end of service. The space is lovely. Think old library with box beam ceilings, huge draperied windows, and a beautiful, green-tiled fireplace. There is an amazing, serpentine banquette in the middle of the room. This would be a remarkable space for a small, private party if they do that. Upon arrival we were invited to select our tea cups. This was the first disappointment. I approve of the fun and beauty of mismatched China patterns, but this wasn't that. There were a couple of lovely, vintage tea cups, but the rest were an uninteresting, beige-ish '70s pattern. We were taken to our marble topped table and presented the tea and cocktails list. We were entitled to share one pot of tea. This is a mis-step as far as I am concerned. While I realize we could have purchased a second pot if we did not agree on a type of tea, it would have been more appealing to each have our own and drink what we chose. We selected a not terribly interesting Earl Grey. They provide a five minute timer for steeping with instructions that they'll bring the tea treats out as the tea is ready. Once I poured my tea, I noticed a lipstick stain on my cup. While the server got me a new cup and a new pot of tea to replace the poured cup, our timer started over again, so while we now had tea from the first pot, no snacks had been delivered. We were probably 20 minutes into our reservation by the time the tidbit tray arrived. Again, no special dishes, just a plain white tower. What a missed opportunity for beautiful presentation! As for the treats, they were similarly unadorned. Everything looked the same and beige. It wasn't even pretty enough for a picture. Every sandwich was on the same bread and cut to the same shape. Yawn. The items: Smoked trout sandwich: best bite of the day, served with roe Golden beet sandwich: weird, with citrus and hazelnuts Cucumber sandwich: standard Gruyere cougere: a tiny profiterole which would have been better warm or at room temperature but was chilled A blueberry thumbprint cookie: yawn Orange scone: yawn Ginger biscuit: scone redux Raspberry financier: a bit doughy Where was the flair? I came here the other night with my girlfriends and we adored this place. The drinks were amazing and the decor was super cute! The space is pretty small so it may take some time to get a table depending on party size. We had checked in around 6:30pm on a Wednesday night and were told it would be about a 15-20 min wait but ended up being 30 min to seat 4 of us. Not too bad but just keep that in mind and that they also don't take reservations. Vaccination card (or photo of) + ID required. They have so many cocktail options to choose from - I wasn't disappointed with any of my selections. They also rotate their menu so if I remember correctly, there will be a brand new cocktail menu coming March 8th! Small food menu but I'd say they are quality bites and worth checking out if you're in the mood for food. The shoestring fries were just regular fries but still tasted great. The Oregon Bay Shrimp rolls could've used a little bit more shrimp but I liked them for the most part. The Prawn Cocktail was also very enjoyable. The vibe was great + their music selection was on point. Definitely my type of place especially with throwbacks including Jagged Edge, Keyshia Cole, and Avant on their playlist! They have a very nice ambience for high tea time in the afternoon . Starts at 1 pm . Affordable and very safe they require a vaccination card and picture ID to enter. By reservation only . The place is very cozy,quiet and very neat. A nostalgic feeling of the past. Staff were great and attentive. You get to choose your own choice of cup and 2 flavors of tea. I believe they turn the place into a tea room in the afternoon and a shot bar in the evening. But be sure to make a reservation and check with them the days that they will do high tea services because from my understanding it's not everyday but a certain days in week so check it out. My mom and I went for their High Tea. It was definitely a solid okay. The cocktail was of course delicious (I ordered the Coal Miners Daughter) and I love that there are mocktails for those who don't drink alcohol. The food was decent, they definitely used high quality ingredients. The cons I'd have to say were that we had to share a pot of tea, though I understand why as the tables are quite small. Also, the food only includes finger food, while other High teas we've gone to included soup in addition. Overall, it was a fun experience and worth going at least once. read more

Why do they ration the sugar cubes at high tea? We couldn't get more than 4 at a time. Smith tea was very nice, and enjoyed the option to add a cbd tincture. Pastries were a bit disappointing. Not quite enough tiny sandwiches. The ginger and Chai scones were pretty good. The Russian tea biscuit wasn't great. Leaving and I could still eat. Great place for happy hour! I love that it's living room style, and super cozy. They have a limited menu (and even smaller HH menu) but truly everything is good between the drinks and the food options! The only reason it's not 5 star is the service isn't top notch. We have been here a couple times and enjoy their drinks and the cheese burger! Will definitely be back!

I went here for a date on Thursday and it was popping at 930pm. There was a dj playing music and it was loud. The environment though was dimmed light, but very romantic setting. With the loud music my date and I had to sit next to each other to be able to hear one another. The drink I had was seasonal punch, it was strong, with a large cubed ice in it and topped off with a piece of ginger, had a smokey after taste with every sip. My date had the shiver me timber and I had a sip of it, was also strong, fruity, and topped off with a piece of mint leaves. If I was to order either of the drinks again I would take the shiver me timber. It was more of my liking than the other but I still finished it. The decorations of the place though was super cute very aesthetically pleasing. This place is located in the Woodlark hotel btw, at first when I was walking by I didn't see it. My date had to find me so it's a little hidden inside. Server was very polite and checked in on us at the right times. She was not super persistent like some can be. I like it when I can enjoy my time and not be bothered 5-6 times like some places. I would recommend this place for cocktails, not sure about the food. We stopped into Abigail Hall on a cold day during our recent visit to Portland in search of Hot Buttered Rum. They didn't have it, but decided to stay for the Mulled Wine on their menu as an acceptable substitute and glad we did. It's a classy and lively lounge with dim lighting, cozy seating, friendly service and fun music playing at just the right background level to keep you aware of it without drowning conversation. It looks like a great place to hang with a group of friends. Since we'd just eaten elsewhere, we didn't try the food, but would definitely return on our next visit to Portland. This is just review for the tea service. It's absolutely terrible! The ambience is nice and the tea cups are cute with mismatched cups and plates. But other than that it's awful. The server could care less as the tea service is pre paid with gratuity. 4 of us went to celebrate birthday and it was two pots between us. They put such tiny amount of tea leaves in the Jasmin tea that the end result was hot water with some floral smell. Also what is with plastic timers! It's supposed to be fancy high tea. Don't get me started with the black tea. Instead of replacing the basket they poured more hot water! So the tea became bitter. The food tray was just sad. There was a sandwich with dry bread and some radish. Awful. The scones were so dry, the sweet desserts were plain cookies and some store bought tiny muffins. Honestly I have hosted better tea at home. The server was MIA. I have had actual high tea in London and this was some sad attempt to make people pay for crap. At least get the tea right! First, it should be noted. I have been many times pre-Covid, post-Covid and I have been for cocktails, special events, and now finally for "High Tea". I have always loved the decor and the soft seating I think it is a delightful space and a wonderful hotel! I think the bar is stunningly beautiful, and the cocktails are generally very good. I particularly love that they have always stated this was a bar for women and I think we deserve a really nice space but it stops there. They have never once had a menu that is reflective of how women prefer to eat. Everything has always been super messy or clunky and is more indicative that the food is coming out of the sister Kitchen called Bullard, which is a barbecue restaurant. They have offered everything from messy tacos, chili dogs, mac & cheese and nothing that's ever truly a clean food experience that is refined or reflective of what you would imagine a female experience to be. Most women don't want to eat with their hands, or worry about getting food on their clothing so that is why I state this. The music at times on special events has been wildly out of sync from the ambience - I've gone in and listened to hard-core rap, or hip hop. I just don't understand why at every sensory experience the mission is lost in the decision-making. So I don't know why I thought High Tea would be any different but I thought I'd give it a shot because there wasn't a lot of options that remained since Covid. I also thought that has been more time between my previous experiences that maybe they found a rhythm for an improved experience. I could say, this is the lowest brow high tea I've ever experienced. First, there's no one to receive you or offer to take your coat or offer to show you where you could hang your coat. Once your seated, there's one server for the entire place which made getting service very challenging. You're required to share a selection of tea with two people and are not be able to make your individual tea selection. The water, for the tea was never warmer than tepid even when requested they provide the hottest water possible. The tea was never at a temperature that was appropriate. Someone claiming to do high tea you would expect the tea at a minimum would be respected. They offered sugar on the table but when honey was requested, plastic Kraft packets arrived, and at one point I had to use my teeth to open the packet, the pastries were moderately fine and singular in note. The tea timer provided was plastic and really took any polish off the experience. The tea service is just mismatched 1980's tea plates and cups (actually had the pattern my mom got for free from the local Fred Meyer's when you made a purchase, so literally from the 80's). One knife was provided between the three of us and again service continued to be spotty. They stated on the website and the reservation that there were cocktail add-ons that could be selected during tea service so I would expect those cocktails to have a tea infusion at a minimum at least two cocktails they could taken the wide opportunities tea flavors offer to make a beautiful tea cocktail option. Leo our server was kind but the constraints of the establishments never allowed him to flourish. Finally, the acoustics in the space are horrible so hearing was very challenging and even though we were the last service of the day and there was 45 minutes that remained till opening for bar service - they put down the check and said you have 15 minutes remaining in your reserved time. In summary, as much as I love high tea, I would forego having it than have it here. Of note, the Heathman high tea has returned seasonally till January 1st so fingers crossed it is as good as previous years. read more

I came for the 'high tea' event on Sunday and it was mediocre. The space is cute, decor and teacups are charming for sure. However, for $100 minimum for two people where gratuity is already included... I expected more. I could not find a menu of the 'tower of treats' but for $100 I figured there'd be some sort of allergen friendly option. Yea no, absolutely nothing is gluten free which was disappointing so my partner could not eat anything at all. They should either advertise this fact, offer a limited additional menu for anyone unable to eat gluten, or just make a few things on the tower gluten free. Also I got a 3oz cocktail and it was $16 so I think for the price point they can provide a few gluten free options lol. Won't return for tea time again. As a big high tea fan, this is not the place to go. The price tag of $38 per person is a draw, and you're getting what you pay for. - Each pot "is designed" to serve 2 people, but ineffectively only holds enough water for 3 cups of tea total. No individual pots allowed, no bottomless tea. - The tower includes 3 finger sandwiches (each 1/4 of a whole sandwich), 2 savory pastures, 1 scone, and 2 small desserts. - The sound system plays pop music, not what most consider an ambiance fitting for high tea. If you're expecting a sophisticated elegant experience, this doesn't hit the mark. - It's very dark inside, it feels like you're in a nighttime bar that's fighting for daylight. Not the ambiance I'd hope for. - Something to consider is there are absolutely no dietary restrictions considered on their menu. Come expecting to have everything contain dairy and gluten, no substitutes. Again, you're getting what you paid for. All in all, from all the high teas I've tried in Portland this was my least favorite. Decent flavors, nothing stand out or REALLY good. We are investing more money next time to get the experience we want. read more

I love this space and all its history, The handprinted walls. the original wainscoting. the fireplace and the feeling that perhaps its namesake the fearless suffragette was in the very spot in the historic building in the room that was formerly the ladies reception room. The music selection was fantastic and the amazing and warm service by Lux and Kate made me feel like I was just at a good friends house with great taste. Tried it out for breakfast and loved the chance to pick out fruit and pasties while also getting a yummy farm fresh entree. I'm surprised by the reviews on this place as I think it might be new favorite cocktail bar in downtown Portland, even given the fact that it's inside a hotel which is never typically my fave. stopped in at 3 o'clock which is right when they open on a Saturday afternoon. there were maybe three other parties here and since it was mostly empty we grabbed a large booth for the both us, not knowing that in about twenty minutes the place would be mostly full, so we got lucky. it was happy hour which they do everyday from 3-6 and it's a pretty fair happy hour. $8 cocktails and cheap bites. $12 cheese & charcuterie board, $5 burger, etc. it's simple and small but quite the deal. we got the the cheese and charcuterie plate which came with two different cheeses, crackers, mustard & a cured meat so a good portion for the price. so the most special thing about this place is the ambiance. candles lit everywhere, plush & pink couches, lots of patterns that all come together perfectly and they made it christmasy with stockings on the fireplace which was the perfect touch the weekend before christmas. it's a reallllly cute place, i kind of can't get over it. service was attentive without being too much. for how full this place got though within the the first thirty minutes of being open i was surprised they only had one server, but they did a good job. overall i love this place and will definitely be back. it's a special spot whether for a date, showing someone the town or stopping in with some girlfriends. As most cocktail bars go, the drinks are around $15-$16 dollars, but they are excellently crafted and absolutely delicious. Located inside a hotel, watch out for a sign out on the street, or you will end up walking past it like we did. No reservations are needed if you are planning to go to the actual bar (it seems many of the reviews are for the High Tea), and upon entering, there is a "seat yourself" sign near the door. It is not very loud, and the seating options are varied and comfy, and the whole vibe is very relaxing and perfect for a casual or more formal night out. Although it did take a while for us to be served, once ordering, the drinks came out very quickly. We ordered three drinks total: the Ru-Paloma, Abby's Coffee Martini, and the Pineapple Daiquiri. 1. Ru-Paloma: very jasmine forward and pretty light. It is definitely not as fruity as a traditional paloma, and has an interesting flavor palate that was fun to try. 2. Abby's Coffee Martini: a very rich drink that was quite strong (contained vodka, rye, and sherry), the intensity of the liquor was balance out by the subtle hint of coconut and the delicate taste of the coffee. I really enjoyed this one, even though it was much stronger than the other coffee martinis I have had in the past. 3. Pineapple Daiquiri: this or the Ru-Paloma might have been my favorite of the night. It took a little getting used to, as it had a robust smokey flavor from the offset, but it really grew on me as I continued to drink. The marshmallows are made in house, and it was absolutely delightful to sample it (with a slight hint of pineapple from the drink)! I really like the woodlark as a whole, so it was only a matter of time before I patronized the bar that's located at the rear of the hotel on the ground floor. I like Abigail Hall for many of the same reasons I like the Woodlark. First, the aesthetic is on point. It allows for relaxation while still having an air of sophistication. However, it also delivers on its primary function, in this case, purveyor of libations. The drinks menu offers a little something for everyone. I almost always go for beer, and their selection was craft and local (though you could hardly expect less of most places in Portland). My partner opted for a cocktail, which tasted quite sublime. Definitely recommend at least one visit if you're staying at the hotel, or perhaps if you're downtown looking for a pre-dinner drink or night-cap. read more

My son and I came for high tea and were super disappointed from start to finish. They'd been told in advance that I had seafood and nut allergies and assured my wife they could accommodate that. Their solution? Put the fish sandwich and nut desserts on a separate plate and not replace them with anything I could eat. They also gave us exactly three sugar cubes and when my son asked for more they brought exactly three to "refill" the sugar bowl. So bizarre. The tea selection also left much to be desired (especially if you want an herbal variety). We love going to tea around town but this place is off our list now. read more

We came here in December to enjoy a holiday high tea with friends. I had not been to Abigail Hall before and I was just excited to try it. The room is itself is behind the reception area of the Woodlark Hotel and serves as a cocktail bar in the evenings. We booked a 3 pm seating and needed to wait a short while in line until the room opened up following turnaround from the 1 pm seating. The room itself was nicely decorated and pleasant. It took awhile for the limited staff to take our tea order, but the tea when served was nice. Unfortunately, for an establishment describing it self as providing an afternoon tea service, the actual tea options available were quite limited. Maybe 6 or 7 tea options in total. I think they were all Steven Smith teas. The high tea food selection was fixed: 3 tiers of sandwiches, scones, and cookies (maybe a small cake slice as well, but I'm not certain). Sadly, the food was unremarkable. Sandwiches were okay but there was too much bland white bread and too little filling. The scone was dry and not very tasty. Cookies tasted like something prepackaged from the supermarket. I am sad our experience was not better as I had hoped coming here could become a Christmas tradition. read more

But high tea food was very mediocre--day-old tasting pastries, just okay sandwiches (two were pretty good, one not great), one very small thing of regular butter for 3 people (not room temperature or whipped or special like clotted cream or great butter would be), two very mediocre cookies, just two kinds of tea, not a ton of food but enough although just very meh--all that for $47/person with tip. And considering I booked almost a month in advance and had to pay whole bill up front--including the 20% tip--with no refund for the one of our party who woke up really sick and couldn't come, made it overall a big miss. High tea - December 2023. Our group of 5 had high hopes for this experience and we thought it kind of just fell flat. First off was the timing of the whole thing. They have seatings at set hours, which means that you and everyone else shows up at the same time and gets seated...and then you just sit there and wait and wait until a server comes over and explains how the thing works (shared teapots and pre-set food brought out), then you order some tea and wait and wait. Next is the tea experience and the food - The water they use to fill up your teapot at the table isn't boiling hot, so by the time the tea steeps it's not as hot as it should be. And the treats (both sweet and savory) are nice, but not worth the $46 bucks per person we paid (including fees and tip). The servers were polite and helpful. The ambiance is nice. But all in all, we are not repeating this, it's just not worth it. read more

We were directed to this really rather adorable place when we were told that the bar was full at Bullard, totally fine, we just wanted drinks and snacks. PUT A FUCKING SIGN ON IT. There is no indication whatsoever about whether you can just walk in and seat yourself, there is clearly a host stand that's turned into a deserted afterthought that's more for decoration at this point. Spend like 20 bucks on a sign. We were haughtily passed up by a slew of tennis playing sweater vest wearing trust fund families who think it's still the 30's, with plenty of staff helping to accommodate groups just trolling in, with no fucking nod to us polite folk just trying to figure out how it all works. (In my fucking day, the people who are polite, patiently waiting and smiling at you tip WAY better than not) I'm sorry, I know by the tiny paper signs on the bar tops that it's technically self serve, but fucking acknowledge people that are just trying to be courteous in this world of absurd ass hats. It's literally called the service industry. I know, I've worked it for years. Also witnessed some really great "garnish sharing" between drinks behind the scenes in the kitchen by the service staff. I wish I could say nicer things about the restaurant staff in Portland in general. Cozy, upscale, hidden lounge tucked back part of the Lobby of The WoodLark Hotel. Didn't know this existed, although, Bullard is on my list for dining. A bartender posted something on Social Media and I made myself happen in off the bus on the way home. I was immediately welcomed by the barkeep and then I noticed there was not a bar to sit at - hmmmm. Well I am here. The decor was lovely, floral, quilted type booths, and nice variety of seating arrangements, small deck/perch that it just for peering over. I like it! Kind of felt like a fantasy Parisian parlor room if you can imagine from travel or literature. Great attention right away, menus on tables, Happy Hour All Day Monday! Good to keep in mind, nice selection of libations and good $. I craved IPA beer but maybe a wine, or.....anyway bartender pointed out the Ruse IPA, it was exquisite. Fresh and hopped. I had two pints and a plate of fries - a very generous and salty helping. The other two food items on HH looked great as well. The lady next to me had a lobster roll - and she claimed that was a nice bite as well. I had to wait a bit extra to get my second beer - I was in no hurry and understand, it was a great touch to then have two staff members recall and get me my bev and later apologize. Those simple mentions mean a lot - Only thing I'd suggest is I did notice several folks just sort of peek in out of the bar, not knowing what to do or what to think. I don't feel particularly strange walking right into a place and checking it out and then plopping down. Maybe they could have a small sign or podium saying "seat yourself" with obvious offerings, too, hours of operation, etc. I don't know - I am not sure if people are shy or what. It is not a traditional, walk in, sit at the bar place, but there is plenty of seating. Anyway, glad I found it and look forward to sharing this discovery with friends. read more

Wondering if they actually use wood in that amazing fire place during the colder/rainier months... Menu consists of solid bar snacks and a couple larger plates. I was here for happy hour and ordered the chicken tenders and smoked salmon dip. Chicken tenders were delicious and that smoked salmon dip was divine. I'll definitely go for the burger next time. Wait staff was nice, but doesn't seem to have a flow going. There weren't too many people in there when we arrived (just 2 of us), probably about 3 other couples there on a late Monday night. We were accommodated and waited promptly, until a group of about 8 came in and the staff started to get a little disorganized. Saw a few couples there wondering when they were going to get their tabs, another drink, the usual shortcomings.
