Decided to try something new and it was a bust, I've heard different opinions about Abuelo's , but I needed to try for myself, I ordered the beef fajita lunch special, and it smelled so good , but the meat was so chewy , it had lots of nerve endings and I couldn't eat it. The rice was bland so I didn't eat it , and the beans lacked flavor. And I was hungry. I've lost interest in several mexican restaurants, I think I'm gonna just have to make myself what I'm craving from now on. Overall the restaurant is nice , they played music a little loud for lunch time, so you can't really have a conversation with your loved ones. Our waitress was very nice and patient with my elderly family members. The environment was great , the decor was nice, but needs to work on the food. Honestly I used to eat Abuelos all the time. I live out of town an hour and a half but we came with the kids to go to NRH20. Got through almost out whole meal and as I was finishing up I felt something on my leg. Looked down and saw something crawling and it was a huge cockroach. Picked up my linen napkin and there were about 5 baby roaches in it. Thing had been sitting on my lap through my entire meal. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful, hostesses were great and my server did her job and did it well. I have been in the food service industry for 17 years, served/bartender for 11 and managed for 5. You know when you have roaches to this degree. The staff was aware and their and guest complaints seem to fall on deaf ears. Management told me they sprayed last night but I say that's untrue. Close the restaurant and bomb it. For that price point, for any price point actually, it needs to be handled. Issue here is the management unfortunately and that's clear. I tipped my server $20 and the helpful hosts $10 each. I'll be following up with staff to see if the issue is resolved. I can't imagine what the roaches in the kitchen are like. read more

The food and service are top notch. Since we started eating there the prices have skyrocketed. One time the waitress let the bar close without telling us and we missed our second margarita. That was disappointing. (For all you Karen's, we walked to the restaurant from our hotel) We'll still go there but not very often. read more

The worst thing is pretending to care but doing nothing. Management reached out after this review and even though I provided them with my contact information, I got no response. I would have been ok with nothing rather than a pretentious comment! This place is crazy big.. you feel like you are entering a palace with painted walls and high ceilings...it can definitely accommodate a lot of people so don't feel afraid to get a group. Our group of 6 decided to go here for lunch on a Friday. We were seated promptly and our server was quick to get our drink order and get some warm chips and salsa. The hot salsa was probably mild for me but I enjoyed it with my chips. I ordered the fajita steak tacos and changed my sides to spinach casserole and potatoes (ask your server if you want to mix and match your sides). Lunch specials range from $8.99 to $15 depending on the portion size. You can also get the regular sized portions, which are much larger. Our server made sure the chips were refilled but no so much with the salsa. Anyways the food came our pretty quick. I have to say the portion was very generous. I got to task on my two tacos. There was guac and sour cream on the side as well. The steak was well seasoned and juicy, the casserole was creamy and so were the potatoes. All in all, a large meal. I was satiated. I did try to use the Yelp coupon for $5 off $10, but apparently they had not seen the coupon before and claimed it was fake. Yelp or Abuelo's whatsup with that? Busy Saturday night. Always love the food. Guacamole is freshly made, several choices of salsa which you can request a larger portion of your fave. Believe it or not, the Ahi Tuna is beautifully presented, so delicate, fresh and delicious. My husband and friends all had cheesy, delicious looking food. Other than the food, my favorite part was my friend leaving an encouraging note on his receipt about how the server would have earned a better tip. We arrived at 7:45 pm on A Thursday for a table for 2. We were sat in the bar and we just waited and waited and then we waited some more for chips, for someone to greet us. Our waiter Juan was having a bad server day as I could hear the table behind us complaining and I think that may have affected our experience. I ordered a small sangria swirl and hubs got a tea. Took forever to get and then chips finally arrived. I ordered the Abuelo dip sampler and hubs ordered the three enchilada platter with two cheese and one avocado enchiladas, potatoes and charro beans. We kept having to ask for silverware and when it didn;t come I just pulled some from a nearby table. When the food arrived my husband got two enchiladas one cheese, one avocado, rice and refried beans. Exhausted we just asked for the check. This place is just okay. Not Mexican food... more like Tex mex (yes there's a difference) We called ahead since we really wanted guacamole. We asked to confirm if the guacamole was fresh. They assured us it was made to order. When we arrived we ordered the guacamole. We noticed it had a bad after taste. I asked the waitress if this was fresh. She said "yes it was made this morning... 4hrs ago" ... sorry Abuelo's.. that is not fresh! The guacamole looked like mush and I couldn't tell if they added vinegar or too much lime ... but it definitely did not taste fresh at all We ordered nachos. Which were just ok.. So delicious!!!! Hot, wonderful enchiladas, tacos, chips and salsa, refried beans and my favorite: pappas (the most delicious mashed potatoes ever!) Clean on the outside and VERY clean on the inside. I walked in and was seated almost immediately! That alone is worthy of a 5 star! I sat down at my table and once again, here comes my Waitress with a smile offering something to drink. Not only did she return with a drink, she also brought Chips and Salsa and this is just to get started while I browse their well organized menu. I was able place my order and here comes the DELICIOUSness in 10 minutes! Every spoonful, forkful and fingerful was exploding with decadence and a burst of flavors for you to savor and enjoy . . . Which was just what I did. The decor was very well thought out. The layout is very group and family oriented, there's even a bar! Do you enjoy Mexican food? Then what are you waiting on? Abuelo's! Damn, this restaurant is huge. The ornately painted landscapes on the walls, giant white pillars, and huge oil paintings might be a bit cheesy, but I think they create a festive atmosphere which makes the entire outing more entertaining! I don't think the food is fantastic, but I do think they make a really appealing plate - every dish has vibrant colors and the portions are NUTS. Soooo much food for an incredible price, especially since you could feed three people with one plate. There's a small gluten sensitive menu with a couple options; some salads, a tamale dinner, shrimp fajitas, soft tacos... I went with the tamale dinner and chose refried beans and cilantro lime rice as my sides. The rice had great flavor, although the texture was a bit tough and chewy. The tamales were covered in a serious quantity of cheese! I love cheese but it was a bit much, even for me... I think the cheese was thicker than the actual tamale! I enjoyed the refried beans the most. They were distinctly peppery and I'm definitely a fan. Our waiter was extremely nice and didn't rush us. The regular menu is HUGE, so you probs need a decent amount of time to decide what to order, especially if you're new to the restaurant. Update on my almost three year old review. Ate there on 05/04/24 and once again was impressed. In the three years since my last review we have dined there probably around 20 or so times. In all those visits we have never been disappointed and here is what makes a huge difference. In covid times restaurants were struggling with keeping prices down and quality up. Most failed and some failed miserably. Abuelos did not. They raised prices and the food quality and quantity remained high. We all dislike higher prices but having higher prices and low quality will not work. Good job and still the best fajitas in town. I don't work there btw. read more

We're meeting my parents for dinner, and suggested Abuelo's. We'd tried this place once before, but it had been a few years back, since we were staying near by, we thought it might be good to try again. The wait time was bit, 30 minutes, parking was scarce, but we finally got seated and placed our order. I got one of the house specialties, the Los Mejores de la Casa. For those that want to know, it's wood grilled, bacon wrapped beef tenderloin medallion's and bacon wrapped shrimp, stuffed with fresh jalapeno and cheeses. Served with black beans. It was delicious. I would try it again, the beef tenderloins were melt in your mouth good, lean and that wood grilled flavor was perfect. It was worth the wait. Good food, good service! read more

Got there and was seated only for the waiter to come out with only dry chips telling us there is no salsa to go with the chips and that he will be happy if we hurried up. He said this in such a disrespectful manner that my client decided not to eat anymore. The chips are great, and the trio of salsas are good. Though I do wish they didn't change the container that they serve them in. The new one is way too small. That combined with the square shape makes it difficult to dip your chips in. Not a big deal though, you can always ask for a bowl of any of the salsas. I've liked pretty much everything I've tried here, but the enchiladas are my favorite, especially the shredded beef. They have a good variety to choose from. I love that they offer sides other than the traditional rice and beans. The papas con chile, and espinaca casserole are both delicious. Margaritas were tasty, and had a good amount of liquor. My mom ordered it online so it was delivered. I ordered the four chicken sour cream enchiladas which cost like $18- $19 and we're not worth the price for me at all. The sour cream sauce if you can call it that was nonexistent and the chicken inside had red enchilada sauce in it. I've I better, tastier sour cream enchiladas from places cheaper than $20 plates geez. I had to rely on the sides which were refried beans and some type of mashed potatoes with cheese and stuff. Then I got a margarita on the rocks and the plastic baggie that it comes in was only halfway full, oh no if I'm gonna pay almost $10 I want my bag to come full as if I was at the restaurant. Good Mexican food and a reasonably priced lunch menu on weekdays make this a nice restaurant. The chips came with 3 dipping sauces. I liked the regular sausa while the green/citrus/sweet option was good too. We enjoyed the lunch enchilada and crispy taco combo served with rice and beans. The sopapillas with honey were delicious and light. Our waitress provided great service with frequent refills for water. A hint when using Apple Maps or Waze is the directions bring you to the south side of the parking lot where the restaurant entrance is not visible. It has been years, no YEARS, since we were last here. Last time was in the previous location a few hundred feet away. Interior looks the same in the new location. Very attractive. I told our server that I don't care what the tequila is, but can I get a Marg on the rocks with freshly squeezed lime juice and Cointreau? No prob, she says. Well, this Marg was muy perfecto. I asked what to ask for to get this again on our next visit and was told, Milagro shaken. So we'll see. As good as I can do at home. A+ The chips are light, crispy and hot. And the three salsas that accompany the chips are all terrific in their own right. Mild and spicy rojas, and a spicy green tomatillo with pineapple. Delish all. Secretary of the Interior and I shared a rellenos plate, one chili stuffed with cheese and the other with beef. Both were wonderful. And the kitchen split the rellenos dinner for us in the kitchen with beans and rice on each plate. A very nice accommodation to old peoples. Why have we not been back here before now? This place has a pretty good happy hour Sunday - Friday from 3pm to 7pm. $2 off margaritas at this time. They have specials on dips if you are in the bar.
