    Bread!

Bay area staple that you can't simply go wrong. Line forms early even on a weekday and associate was helpful to suggest her faves. Gotta admit I've only had ACME from grocers or resto and glad to stumble upon this bread company on the way to brunch. Had the cheddar biscuit (still warm), jalapeno cheddar, reg sourdough, pesto slab and almond croissant. By the time I got out, line was even longer!

Having hot marinara meatballs I made with fresh herb focaccia. It's been such a long time. And man, it's sooooo delicious. Just dipping that rectangular wonder in high end EVOO is also heavenly!!!

This store front is probably the smallest I have ever experienced. Only two people can fit inside so there will always be a line out the door but they move really fast and the wait is maybe 5-10 minutes. Parking is limited in the front but there is more parking behind the bakery. Bread is fresh and amazing. I haven't had anything that I didn't like. Inside is small but everyone was helpful and happy. Gastro Maestro Approved!!!

One of my favorite bakery/bread companies in the bay area, hands down. There are ALWAYS new baked goods to try and rotating/seasonal items as well. I'm not a big fan of gingerbread cookies, but oh myyyyy highly recommend the one here using real ginger! From the moment you step inside, you're greeted by the enticing aroma of freshly baked bread, and it's clear that this bakery takes pride in every loaf they produce. The variety here is impressive, ranging from classic sourdoughs to unique specialties like their rustic pain au levain and walnut levain. Each loaf boasts a perfectly crispy crust and a tender, flavorful crumb that keeps me coming back for more. The sourdough baguette is a personal favorite of mine, with its perfect balance of tangy and savory flavors. The quality and consistency of Acme Bread are unparalleled, making it a staple in the local community and beyond. I also like to check out their daily "day old bread" menu, you get day old bread for almost 50% off, such a steal! Whether you're picking up a loaf for a special occasion or just indulging in a daily bread habit, Acme Bread Company is the go-to spot. It's a bakery that truly embodies the art of bread making, and I can't recommend it highly enough. Trust.

My boyfriend took me here for my birthday, and we ordered a couple pastries including - a peach puff pastry, a jalapeño cheese turnover, and croissant with goat cheese and Kalamata olive. All of the things were exquisitely delicious. We had to stand in line for maybe 5-10 minutes and it was bit chilly out, but when I tell you it is worth the wait... it is totally worth the wait. This was my 2nd time at Acme, and I must say that it will definitely not be my last. Parking was not bad but we were there at like 930am, so get there early, it checks off all the vibe checks and it's worth the wait! Parking is small but we had no trouble finding parking.

I came about 10 minutes before opening and there was about 10 people in front of us. It was our first time here, so I felt a little frazzled and rushed during the process since I wasn't sure what was available or what's on the menu. Kinda had to just look around in the store/Yelp as well as ask, but everything was delicious. The pizzas are huge, but so good.

Too Good to Go surprise bag

I happened to be available one day for the pickup window for their Too Good to Go surprise bag, so I ordered it on the app. I was given a massive quantity of bread, some smaller rolls, one unsliced loaf, and a long baguette. It was a really good deal for that quantity of bread for the price, and the baguette was so long it stuck out of the bag. This is a solid place to get plain bread. I wish the surprise bag had continued some of their more interesting flavored items, though.

Great bakery tucked in Berkeley along San Pablo Ave. Just see the long line in a small parking lot. The shop is small but it is full of breads, rolls and baked goods. You can also see the kitchen which shows how fresh these goods are prepared. The line looks long but does move steadily. They have many options so it's easy to buy more than what you initially wanted. Tried their focaccia pizzas and they were excellent!

Learned about this place after going to Cal. Good selection of rustic breads-my fave is the cranberry walnut loaf. The bread still tastes great even when frozen and retoasted. Long line on a Sunday afternoon-however there is a small lot infront which is super convenient. For convenience I'll probably stick to getting their stuff at Berkeley bowl unless I'm more in the area of their shop.

Ask the Community - Acme Bread Company

Are you open on Tuesday 5/28/24?

Absolutely! Normal hours from 8am-4pm on Monday and Tuesday next week. FYI: The Acme shop in Berkeley is only closed on: Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Years Day!

Pain Au Levain - what is the best way to keep a loaf fresh for 8 days?

When the loaf is 1-2 days old, slice it up, and freeze it in a sealed bag. Take out slices as you want them and toast them - we've been doing this for years. These breads freeze very well. You could also just freeze the loaf if you want to keep it… Read more

Hi, Is the chocolate ganache button vegan? Do the almond meringue cookies have egg whites? Would love to see ingredients or vegan labels on pastries.

By definition meringue is made with egg whites. Maybe you should shop at a place that labels everything and has nice plastic wrap too. I'm sure the staff at Acme will do the best to answer your questions, as busy as they are.

Is there a list of breads, like a menu they have available? I can't find it on their website.

No, not really. I think this is cause they are selling so fast they can't tell if at 1o'clock a special kind of bread is still available. But I can tell you it is worth going there especially when you are living in Berkeley. We are driving over… Read more

Are they open during the shelter in place (#covid19)?

Last I saw driving by, they are. Best of luck and stay healthy!

Are there options that are safe for people with multiple tree nut and peanut allergies?

Yes, but there are no gluten-free options! I'd laugh, but it was asked when I was at the bakery.

Do you have any breads using whole wheat?

Yes, I highly recommend the Walnut Levan that was recommended to me.

Do they still give away bread starter?

They did for a good junk of time, however went in today and found out they have stopped at this location. If they begin again, bring a non glass container (kitchen rules)… Read more

Are the kalamata olive and goat cheese stuffed puffs offered daily? Those were amazing.

I arrived around 7:30 and it was empty, but as I was deciding what to get there was a line out the door. Everything looks delicious it was so hard to choose. For myself I got the egg and ham croissant which was so unique and absolutely delicious. A perfect savory treat. I also had a bite of their strawberry-rhubarb breton which was also delicious, kinda like a shortbread cookie with cream and strawberry. The worker was super sweet helping me out and patient as I was struggling on what to order for her and myself. Small shop with meter/street parking.

Their food is generally pretty good: ranging from average (certain seasonal desserts, their ham and…read morecheese croissants, scones) to excellent (toffee cake, almond croissants, certain beads). They are on the pricey side but that's expected in the Bay Area. The reason for the two stars: of the last three times I've been there, they have gotten my order wrong TWICE. Once in a while is totally an acceptable accident but two thirds wrong is really poor service. The workers are nice but not exactly approachably friendly. They take the order in front of the register, receive payment, and then step over to the counter to collect the items. The issue is when you (I) order a lot of stuff, they get collected behind the counter and placed into a large shopping bag so you can't see what you are getting (or not getting). They walk around behind the counter grabbing stuff and those that have paid stand in a small corner away from the purchasing line so it's difficult to see what they do (or don't) pick up. The first time I came home to find my order of half loaf (they sell the large ones by halves, if you want) missing. I brushed it off as an accident. I don't live close enough to go back before they close and I wouldn't have proof anyways. This last time I went, they didn't put in a pastry! At this point, I'm down about $16 and beginning to wonder if it's deliberate. *sigh* So now I have to decide whether I boycott them altogether or only buy one or two items so I can see what I am getting or be the weirdo that takes out every item in a large shopping bag to double check their work. *sigh again*

The bakery itself seems to mainly be a takeout spot, with minimal indoor seating which felt pretty inconvenient given the limited space for customers, however it did seem to serve more of a purpose as a waiting area anyways. The structure of the bakery leaves a bit to be desired as well, as we found the glass display cases as the only form of menu, so being in the front of the line while still deciding what to order caused some unnecessary anxiety. Regardless of those nitpicks, the baked goods themselves were pretty good! Service was instant, and all of the treats looked delicious--it was hard to choose what we wanted! Our favorites were the Thai Tea and Ube Coconut Mochi Donuts. Both had really strong flavors--the Ube in particular was very clear in comparison to most other Ube desserts in my experience. The textures of the mochi donuts were really well done too, with soft exteriors and chewy, glutinous interiors. The same can be said about the Mochi Muffins, though with crunchier parts around the edges. We found the contrast of textures to actually work really well! However, the flavors of the Muffins were lacking a bit--the Red Velvet didn't stand out much, with the frosting tasting a bit too sweet, and while the Five Spice had a really interesting flavor, it was also a bit too sweet, drowning out the more unique citrusy flavor. Overall, however, all four of the goods we had were enjoyable eats, and would definitely return some time to try out other flavors!
