All American responded quickly to our call, and Kevin quickly located and capped the leak to prevent further damage. He thoroughly explained our options, from repairing the immediate leak to taking preventive measures to avoid future in-slab leaks. After discussing the pros and cons, we decided to move forward with a downstairs re-pipe to replace any pipes that were in the slab, along with replacing our pressure regulator and several older valves. This was a major project involving rerouting plumbing through the ceilings and walls, but Kevin guided us through every step of the process. And not to get into the whole backstory, but there was a small request that was that was verbally agreed to that I thought they might renege on. Ability is legit, professional, on-time, and did a great job replacing a whole house water filter. The work was done in an out of the way space under the house, but the plumber took pride in his work and ran the copper pipes in a way that looks nicer than what was installed previously. I am beyond disgusted with Ability Plumbing and their shady, predatory business practices. They prey on people in urgent situations, overcharge wildly, and then vanish when you actually need them. On 10/20/2023, I had no choice but to use Ability Plumbing because my HOA in Summer Hill, San Diego, only allows them. A technician came out to give me a quote for replacing sinks. The price was steep, but since they were the HOA's contractor, I felt trapped. During this visit, the technician pushed me into replacing my "failed" hot water shut-off valve -- something I didn't even call about -- warning me about "emergency situations" and how critical it would be. His high-pressure pitch worked, and I paid $920 for it (later finding out other reputable plumbers would do it for half the price). But again, my hands were tied due to the HOA. Fast forward to 8/12/2025 -- I had an actual emergency where I needed this expensive shut-off valve. Guess what? It didn't work at all. I called immediately, got voicemail, and later spoke to a woman named Laura who assured me they'd send a tech on 8/13/2025 at 9am. I took off work, sat here waiting, only for Laura to call at 10:30am saying the appointment was canceled because their three technicians were "tied up on another project." This was after knowing my situation and the fact their overpriced "emergency" valve failed me. This is not just bad service -- it's outright scheming. They sold me a part I didn't ask for, at a gouged price, and when the moment came for it to actually protect my home, it failed. And their response? Cancellations and excuses. On their website, they boast about "25 years of experience" and "treating customers like family." Please. Maybe it's 25 years of scamming families. Their actions show zero care, zero respect, and zero accountability. The positive: - within 90-minutes of calling, the plumber was there to clear the line. He told me camera of the line was included. - Jerry and his two guys were very nice, very polite. The negative: - after the first guy arrived and got started, Jerry showed up with another guy (now 3 guys on site), and told me the camera was going to be additional charge. I told him that the first guy said it was included. Jerry quickly said ok. That seemed odd. - though they said tree roots were the cause, clearing the line was done without the root cutter head which I would've expected. So no effort to remove any roots, just poke a hole in the blockage to allow the water to pass through the line. - Jerry informed me the price to clear the clog was $250. I was surprised, so he said "ok, then $200". Again, it seemed a little shifty. He offered to return with a hydrojetter and charge me $600 if ai chose that service but by then I already felt this was not who I wanted to work with any further beyond the immediate need. Afterward I found competing service providers charge ~$100 (some include a camera) for the work I received that day and would've also done some root removal rather than just poke the clog to clear the backup. I chose this provider based on Yelp reviews. But I felt it was smart to circle back and leave one of my own based on my experience.
