Our new pool is so beautiful that pictures don't do it justice. We've had such a wonderful experience working with Brian & Jason. I was really nervous about such a big project, but the experience couldn't have been any better. Brian truly cares about his clients like they are family. We started our project in February and it was done by May. Installing a pool is expensive, however, you get what you pay for. This is something where you don't want to cut corners. We actually found that most other well known companies in the Bay Area are charging substantially more than what we paid for. The equipment is great and easy to use. From the moment Brian came to do our consultation my husband and I knew he was our guy! We had met up with 4 other companies and Brian was always our go to when we talked about pros and cons. After we met, he kept in touch letting us know he was always available if we had any questions. He sent multiple pictures of his previous work and even shared some of his hobbies relating to my toddler who loved big trucks. He let us know that he was willing to go above and beyond to earn our trust and help build our families dream pool. The contract Brian provided was very easy to understand, detailed to every size, price, what was included and not included and even what was promised to us in our meeting/consult. As soon as contract was signed he provided dates and gave detailed info on what was to happen and the stages we were in. If I had any questions a phone call was never missed and my texts were always answered by Brian and/or Jason his project manager. I probably asked some stupid questions but they never made me feel like it was and made sure I understood everything. His sub contractors always came on time, did their job efficiently and cleaned up at the end of the day. Even when our pool project was finished, Jason was always willing to come by if I had a concern about anything or would text me back with detailed info. Building a pool is no small and cheap project, finding and researching companies is very important. After receiving four estimates, we chose Advantage Pools. Brian came across as honest and straightforward, guiding us through every step of the process. Throughout the project, we worked with Brian and Jason. Their pricing was neither the cheapest nor the most expensive. Along the way, we changed our minds a few times, but Brian and Jason were always patient and accommodating. When the pavers wouldn't anchor the ground wire for the pool, as we thought they would, Brian personally stepped in to resolve the issue. In the end, I was impressed with his work and his responses to reviews, plus, one of his client's review posts had an image of a very similar pool design as what we were hoping to build for our own. Brian built our pool and it's absolutely amazing! He has amazing vision and knew exactly how to turn my dream into reality. We did a lagoon style pool with flagstone waterfall, a slide & a beach entry with pebble tech and grotto style waterfalls. Its been 12 years now and has needed minimal repair. After trying five other pool companies I got ahold of Brian. Brain came out and looked over our renovation and quickly turned it over to Jason! Jason was on top of everything and every step and kept us informed what would happen next! We have a 60's pool with lots of issues. Well APBA took on the job when others said no way. We did the remodel in the winter so we could have a pool in spring so we had to deal with Xmas vacation and the heavy rains which both stalled the completion time. That was NOT the fault of APBA! This review is being written purely on customer service as we never ended up getting a design or pool through no effort of our own. Called Brian two weeks ago. Picked up and was very nice. Asked my husband to reach back out on Monday to schedule an appointment to come by. Called back on Monday and he scheduled Weds. Called Weds after we had already both taken off the afternoon from work and said he needed to reschedule to Friday. No problem. My husband took off more time to meet with Brian. He came by and seemed professional. My husband really liked him and he assured my husband he would send him a plan. He and my husband talked about plans and Brian said he would be back in contact. A week later, I personally texted Brian to ask for an update. Even stated if they were too busy to take us on to please at least give us the courtesy of letting us know so we could find someone else and still make our dream of giving the kids a pool this year a reality. No response. My husband reached back out again today. No response. I don't care how busy you are or how many projects you are managing customer service is everything and we feel our time was greatly disrespected. We even gave an out if he was too busy for our business. I saw other reviews that stated the same thing happened to them. I am so sad we wasted three weeks and now we probably don't have any chance of a pool this summer for the kiddos. I believe this review is warranted. When you're willing to drop 60-75k into a business, the quality of customer service matters. I hate writing bad reviews. Brian was recommended to me from a past coworker. He was super responsive via text and then disappeared on me and I never got a quote. So I reached out to a neighbor who had a pool installed and to my surprise it was the same company. So I reached out again giving them a second shot. Brian was busy the day of our apt so he sent out his partner. They guy came out and did a rough sketch and said I'd get a quote in 2 days. A week went by And I reached out to see where my quote was and he never replied again. I called quality pools and they came out and gave me a quote right in the spot. read more

If you decide to use this pool builder make sure of a few things: 1. Get EVERYTHING in writing. And I mean completion dates, etc. 2. Confirm the same work crew will be there throughout the build (it was promised to us and wasn't kept). 3. Make sure ALL work is completed before writing a check. 4. Be prepared for the job to go way over the budgeted timeframe in the contract. 5. Double check all work before making a final payment. Nearly a year later we had to hire another pool builder to complete our job. After spending more than $100,000 (FAR more than what was agreed upon) the pictures below is how the finish work looked after we made final payment. Shame on me for not insisting the work be done but there was pressure for the final payment and I just assumed the builder was reputable and at this price point the finish work would be done. 6. Call references. 7. Make sure you're ready to make ALL decisions on your own: stone type and color, etc. We did this ENTIRELY on our own. Even when we revived guidance many times the guidance was incorrect. Caveat emptor! read more

My wife and I absolutely love our pool and spa by Advantage Pools. We recently moved to Brentwood and wanted a pool/spa, so we met with several local pool builders. We never built a pool and were understandably a little anxious about finding the right company for the job. After meeting with several pool builders, it was a no-brainer to go with Brian Cardiff and Advantage Pools. There were several reasons for our decision. 1) Brian's company was recommended by a former client of his who invited us over to see his pool, which was beautiful. 2) Brian is professional, friendly, responsive, patient, and answered all our questions. He would respond to our emails and texts and come by our home when we needed to talk in person. He worked within our budget to give us our custom-built pool/spa that perfectly fits our space and lifestyle. 3) Advantage Pools is a one-stop shop and each member of their team is a top-notch professional, including the guys that handled the fencing, the excavation, the rebar work, the gunite, the concrete, the tile work and more. We had no idea how many experts are required to ensure that Advantage Pools meets its high standard of excellence. 4) Brian's project manager, Jason, was assigned to manage the project and from our very first meeting he was friendly, informative and responsive. Jason walked us through every single step of the project, explaining options, timelines and what we could expect. He sketched out, then actually chalked out what we could do, including shape and location of the pool/spa so that we could get an idea of what it might look like and then determine final location, size, style, etc. - and this was before we had even made our decision on which company to go with. After we made the decision to go with Advantage and signed the contract, Brian had the permit in hand the following day and work started the following Monday. A shout out to a few members of Brian's team: Jason- he managed the project like a maestro and kept it on and ahead of schedule. Anytime my wife or I had a question, we would text Jason and immediately receive a reply. Victor - he was the concrete guy and he came by a couple of times prior to the job to walk the property and determine what would be required, then met with us to find out the color concrete and other materials/details we had in mind. (Victor and his team were so good at their job that we hired them for two other projects.) Jaime- he is an expert tiler and did an amazing job on the pool and spa. We got several bids for our pool and went with Brian since he was happy to answer all our questions, researched a new coping product we wanted to use, provided a detailed and complete bid, returned every single call and met us on site to review our pool concept and guided us in the right direction. Brian didn't try to hard sell us at any point but seemed only interested in making sure we got a well built pool even if we went with another contractor. It didn't take long to figure out Brian knows his craft and is genuine. I have been in construction for 25+ years and was blown away with Brian's pool building process. Every phase of pool building is done by a separate crew that specializes in each task of pool building. Over the years since Brian built our pool, we have needed things like new/replacement pool covers, a leak repair, and most recently, a new pool sweeper/cleaner. On each occasion, Brian has been responsive and provided the help needed in a timely manner. A friend had a pool installed by Diablo Tropicals last year. He referred us to him but with the caveat that you have to stay on top of him as he doesn't always show up when he is supposed to. On the first phone call, we reached him directly by phone. He went on and on (on the phone) about things to look out for with pool contractors and basically gave us a pool 101 lesson over the phone. Fair enough. He then asked us to email him at the company email to remind him of our appointment for the following week. Did just that, received a confirmation, and he was a no show. We thought we would give him another chance, reached out to him, set up another appointment for the following week, and guess what, another no show. We have scratched him off our list. Obviously this guy has no business being in any business if he can't even put his best foot forward in trying to secure new business. BE FORWARNED. There are too many other pool contractors out there who will earn your business the legitimate way. RUN, DO NOT WALK! read more

I'm only giving Brian 1 star because although the pool is awesome his service is terrible. Anyone can contract out to build you a nice pool! We started the process in September 2013 our pool wasn't finished until April 2014. We were promised things that he never delivered and our concrete is still broken even after MANY attempts to get him to send his guys out to fix what they broke. I would not recommend Diablo Tropicals, as a previous person stated there are many other contractors out there that will deliver what is promised. read more

We had an excellent experience with Diablo Tropical Pools (DTP). We had very specific ideas for a moderate-sized "high end" design for a moderated-sized swimming pool that featured both aesthetic contemporary architectural qualities, materials and details, to be combined with functional recreational uses. As this was our first pool, we lacked knowledge of the options for permitting, construction and maintenance requirements. We interviewed several pool companies and checked into their past experiences. We had concerns from the past reviews of DTP, but when we met Brian, we were impressed with his knowledge, experience and enthusiasm for our pool project. We appreciated his honesty about his work and his commitment to work with us to provide the kind of pool we wanted within our budget and schedule. We made the right choice with Brian. Brian was very helpful throughout the process. He provided working plans for our design and showed us what options and features he knew would work best for us. For example, we did not know anything about water treatment systems. Brian provided us with all the information we needed about pool water treatment systems and provided us with a recommendation based on his experience. When we learned about a new innovative technology for water treatment, he actually met with the inventor to determine how effective that system would be and its reliability, and then came back to us with his recommendation about it. He secured the necessary permits for us, and pool construction began immediately. Brian kept to his part of the schedule, that had to be coordinated with our landscaper. Coordination between Brian and the landscaper presented some challenges, but mostly were not his problem. In fact, Brian made up for certain deficiencies of the landscaper and assisted us in correcting problems that she could not or would not fix. significantly, he provided those services to us at no requested additional cost. In doing that, Brian demonstrated his genuine commitment to real customer service. Brian was a delight to work with, always enthusiastic and helpful. With DTP's assistance, the pool is everything we hoped it would be. We highly recommend Brian to anyone looking for knowledge, experience and good customer service in their pool contractor. Before deciding on a contractor I got multiple bids and talked to a few references. After talking to one of Brian's customers who was getting his SECOND pool built by Brian, I called him and was very pleased by his price and knowledge of the business. Brian and his team did an AMAZING job on our pool! Brian was very accommodating, after drawing up the contract we made a few changes that weren't part of our contract and all he asked for was a little more time to make the special orders and get them installed. I checked every aspect of our pool during each phase of construction and talked to his workers, all of them told me how hardworking and incredible he was to work with. One of his guys told me how after a year, a customer got in touch with Brian about an issue not under warranty and Brian sent his guy back out to fix the issue free of charge. If I or my wife had any questions he would always answer them within a day and usually sooner. In the contract we were responsible for getting the fence put back up, but Brian found someone within a day and for a super low price to come out and install the fence so we could do our final inspection. After having the fence put up, Brian came out and noticed a couple of things that he did not approve of so he had the guy come back out the next day and fix it. This guy was recommended to him by someone else. Brian is very conscientious about his work and would send workers out any time my wife had a concern regardless of how small it was. Brian is very customer oriented and I never got the feeling he that was overcharging for anything, he even gave us a free sheer descent waterfall free of charge! Another thing to consider, if your getting a pool built, Brian is local and connected. If you need something done, he knows a guy. If you have a warranty issue he's local and always available. Diablo Tropicals installed our pool this winter. We interviewed three pool contractors and Diablo Tropicals stood out with pricing, availability and overall interest in our project. We went with a simple design, free-form 90' foot pool/spa combo with pentair equipment, stamped concrete and gas fireplace. The installation was done during the winter months and we did not mind scheduling delays due to rain, the project started in November and was completed mid-February. Brian and crews were professional, competent and respectful of our time and privacy. Overall everything looks amazing, we have not experienced any issues other yelp reviewers have expressed. We couldn't be happier with our pool! The contractor, Brian, was wonderful to work with. He kept us informed and updated throughout the construction process. He was very easy to get a hold of, usually responding to our texts immediately. We were able to get the exact pool we wanted, even with some additional upgrades such as waterfalls and top of the line equipment, and still stay in our budged. The other pool companies we received quotes from gave us less and pushed us over our budget. The pool and spa are beautiful and we look forward to enjoying them this summer! read more
