The location is great for customers because of the endless parking but I imagine it may hurt business because it's a bit hidden. Consistently good! No matter what you order, it's always delicious. Have had a couple issues with an order coming out differently than what we ordered (maybe two times out of ten or fifteen visits), but when even the mistakes are delicious, it's hard to complain! The (vegan) potato salad is AMAZING. Out of this world good. And I have this restaurant to thank for restoring my faith (so to speak) in both tofu and tempeh. Turns out when they're prepared right, they're amazing, and Afternoon Deli prepares them both very, very right! Super menu and beverage selection, super nice staff, high quality food, fairly reasonable prices (this stuff isn't as cheap as the schlock you get at a fast food joint, but the few extra bucks are beyond worth it!). If they're open when we're in GV, we go to Afternoon Deli for our meal. They're in a class all their own! I'd recommend them to anyone who's going to be in GV. read more

Afternoon Deli in Grass Valley by Kmart. A gem tucked away! It was my first time stopping in here and I am so happy I did. I tried the Mediterranean Chicken sub. It was mouth-watering and served with a side of fresh slaw and a dill pickle. It was the best sandwich I have had in years! I spoke with the sweet elderly owner, Bob and he was a delight. The food ended up being pretty good, but the service... WOW! I have never been treated so rudely in my life by the blonde short haired cashier. I called my order in, and they said it would be ready in 10 minutes. I went in in, paid for my food and waited. And waited. And waited. While I waited, the cashier girl was rude to the owner (and cussed in response to him when he'd walk away from her.. In front of a couple of different customers, a couple of separate times). I waited for about 20 minutes (after already waiting the 10 min to go in when it was supposed to be ready). Not once did she say anything about being sorry or let me know they would have it out soon, etc. Finally, I asked what was going on with my order and she proceeded to give me the BIGGEST attitude response of "we got internet orders in since you placed your order and we put those in between, so yeah. I suppose their still working on it" and rolled her eyes at me. I then commented on her wonderful customer service skills and she KEPT talking shit to ME! Even as I walked out the door. I have never felt compelled to make a bad yelp review before, but the service I received was so unbelievably bad. The place was cute and everyone else seemed nice. Hopefully they get rid of her and replace her with someone who actually WANTS a customer service job. read more

A lot of reviewers are rightfully impressed with their vegan options but they also have the best burger and best fries in the area. Baby spinach instead of lettuce comes on the always fresh bun. I have been coming here for years. It is always consistently good for me as well as my vegan wife. Even the ketchup is organic. Don't know where they find those unsung but great half sour dill pickles that always accompany my burger but it's yet another nice touch, kinda like dining in Manhattan. Tucked nearly behind Kmart's nursery area, it evaded me for years after moving to Nevada County, but eventually I found it (on Yelp) and glad I did. It's now our go to eatery. read more

I agree with Maura this is a jewel tucked away. My husband and I don't eat out frequently and I was looking for a local place that accomodated Vegans. (I didn't want to drive up to Ikes in Nevada City.) I had seen this place many times but never stopped. We are both glad that we did. Great variety for the Vegans to Carnivores. We had the Tempeh Reuben (really good) and the Falafels (really good). Definitely will go back and take out of town visitors. Comparing the Tempeh Reuben to the one at Ikes..not quite as good but prices are lower at Afternoon Deli. Thanks to the prior reviews that helped me choose this place. read more

I've driven by this place many times in the last 3 years and never stopped. I figured it was a run-of-the-mill Subway type place. WRONG! Lots of vegan choices and plenty of non-vegan/vegetarian choices as well. I tried the Meze and Pita and the hummus was the best I've ever had. The worst thing about this place is the location. Had they been able to find a spot in downtown Grass Valley or Nevada City. I have no doubt they'd be one of the most popular joints in our little town. I've eaten here many many times and tried all sorts of things. Everything is delicious and tastes hearty, delicious and healthy. Service is smiley and attentive. It's a deli style ordering counter, but they do serve the food to the table. It's got a nice, quaint and clean environment and feels very comfortable to eat and hang out in. Wish they had wi fi...I'd spend even longer amounts of time there! Two of us had lunch at the deli on Saturday. We enjoyed it very much. I had the lamb & beef gyros on pita with tzaziki sauce. It was very tasty and everything was fresh. My only criticism is that the big pile of red onions on top were raw, and not marinated. I cannot take raw onions and had to pick them all off. My dining partner had the deli sandwich on rye and thought it was wonderful. I eat here whenever I can. The food is top notch, my favorite is their burgers, the meat is cooked to order. Doesn't get better.
