The reviews for this place are genuinely baffling bc this experience was sub mediocre. The food was especially so. The best thing we ate was the bread with whipped butter. For entrees, I got the halloumi plate, and it literally looked like something I would make at home when I'm in a hurry to throw dinner together. A piece of halloumi, some rice pilaf that wasn't any better than Whole Foods' boxed pilaf with chickpeas mixed in. My friends ordered the pasta and the burger and let's just say we all left food and politely declined to go boxes. The service was very sporadic and the coursing was way off; we waited a very long time for drinks, and then for the bread, and then for the entrees. The only person who was on top of it was the person refilling our waters -- she was by every 10 min it seemed and our waters were always full. Pretty much the only positive thing about this place was the location and that there's easy parking. Give this restaurant a hard pass. Seabird is definitely better, the brewery in the same complex is better, Blackbird Bakery is better etc etc etc read more

Agate has risen to the top of the BI restaurant list and is one of my three great recommendations on the Island. The cooking is perfection - I've never had a meal that was less than excellent. The service is friendly, very professional and attentive without being obtrusive. The atmosphere is busy, but conversation is easy. Tenth anniversary spent in utter comfort and care. The best part was the warmth of familiar service from two of the most legendary table-side humans, Yolanda and Rich. Amazing cocktails, perfect wines paired with our individuals meals, courses of tasty yumminess that exceeded expectations. Even the busser was putting off groovy vibes. Well I can't say I was surprised, but what a fantastic dinner we had. This is a beautiful spot, and the kitchen really delivers. I had the prawn pasta. The prawns were perfectly cooked, as was the pasta. This towards the end of a busy night, so doubly impressive. The vodka sauce could not have been better, and the oysters with which I started as delicate as could be, with a really distinctive mignonette. Dessert - a ricotta cake and home made walnut liqueur - were a lovely finish. I'm a pretty good cook, but I couldn't come close to this level. The service was also excellent and I must say I highly recommend a visit. read more

Excellent restaurant. Great spot for a meal in Bainbridge. The menu has a nice set of options ranging from seafood to beef to pasta. I came here in the spring and there was a good crowd but it wasn't overflowing. To me, it's not a destination restaurant but worth visiting if you are in the area. read more

We went here for a special occasion dinner for 10 people on Saturday. They did a great job! I arranged to have some wine and appetizers ready at the table for when we arrived, and then everybody ordered off the menu for their mains and desserts. Our first visit to this relocated restaurant. It is now our favorite place for dinner on the island. Service was attentive without being overbearing. We were with a friend that was visiting from the east and we had a few small plates. All were excellently prepared with care and creativity. My husband ordered a burger that he said was the best that he ever had. Each ingredient was special down to the sliced pickles. I'm very happy that we found Agate Pass. We will return! read more

Months ago, my wife and I asked a friend what the best food in town is. Agate, she replied emphatically. So we were excited for our reservation last night. Initial impression was that Agate's interior space and design is impressive. Very luxe, nice social spacing with a warm, high-end appeal. Rich woods and eclectic lighting create an ambiance unlike any other restaurant on the island. And the bar is beautiful. We started with a glass of Chardonnay for my wife and a very cold Hendricks martini for me. Rolled into the squash soup and fresh oysters to start with. Both were exceptional, the soup had spice and texture and the correct consistency . It could have been served a bit hotter but the taste was delicious. My oysters were served at perfect temperature and were firm and briny. In a word, outstanding. Wow! For entrees we ordered the halibut and the NY strip steak. Both were served with delicious half rounds of potatoes that were slightly crispy on the edges. Plus a well caramelized broccolini with the steak, and sautéed greens with the fish. My wife loved the halibut, crisped on top and flaky beneath. She thought it was cooked well, my take was it was a little over. But just a little. I asked for mid-rare plus on the steak and that is exactly how the chef prepared it. A nice piece of meat, slightly seared on the outside and very tender. My only comment is that my dish was salt forward. Both the meat and the veg, the potatoes could handle it. Wife's greens were also a bit salty. That aside, the entrees were enjoyable. For dessert we ordered tawny port and had a custard dish as well as gelato. We do not have a sweet tooth but both choices were outstanding! So overall, in my opinion, Agate is the best upscale restaurant on the island. Stunning interior and thoughtfully prepared food and drink. By the way, the service was impeccable, both our server and bartender were highly tuned in to our experience. And I believe the owner was there and she would visit each table and check in. Agate is a first class evening for delicious food, thoughtfully prepared cocktails and perfect service. Next time I'm trying their steak tartare appetizer and maybe the pasta. The food was very good- the pork chop was excellent, the steak was good but not the best cut so that is one area of improvement- and was well priced. The service was fantastic. A fabulous server made the evening decent. We ordered salads that were delightful followed by $45 fish entrees that were disgusting. I would not be writing this review except that the owner made zero effort to respond to a more discreet contact. Simply didn't give a damn that I was served a piece of salmon that was spoiled and should never have been put on a plate. The server took it away and did not charge it to the bill, which was appropriate since I took one bite and spit it out. The others in our group ordered the halibut. Nothing at all wrong with the fish, just atrocious cooking; it was an overcooked stringy mess. We have eaten there before and all it would have taken is concern and common courtesy, perhaps with an explanation as to what was wrong that night. Nothing. Nada. Zip. We won't be back. read more

I had a 5pm dinner reservation on Saturday night. We don't plan on coming back. I regret leaving a 20% tip considering the note left on our receipt. It makes me feel bad that I paid so much for a dinner and was made to feel like ordering my steak medium well is an inconvenience for the kitchen staff and something I should feel embarrassed about. We got a last min reservation at Agate and I was thrilled we chose it. The hostess was very accommodating and moved us outside when we asked. The food was amazing. We had the gnocchi with corn (A+++), the stone fruit salad . The one person had the pork chop, one had the scallops and one had the fish of the day. All were stellar, although the Pork chop won the "best" when we voted. Desserts excellent too. The lemon cake superior as was the "pudding" item that I cannot recall the name of. Great wine list. Our waitress went above and beyond the whole evening. Our heater was slightly problematic, but she got someone to fix it right away. When she served our main courses she noticed the sauce was missing from my plate immediately and returned within 30 seconds with it. I hadn't even noticed yet, but it really made the plate when I added it. But mostly she was so pleasant and gracious all night. She didn't rush us off as we finished our wine even though the restaurant was mostly closing and putting things away. It was really a great way for us to cap off a week on a boat. read more

We've been here a few times and I feel like the food gets better each time. We went this past weekend on Saturday night for a birthday dinner. The bread with whipped sea salt butter and artichoke tapenade was scrumptious. I practically licked it clean. They were out of the bavette steak which I was very bummed about, so I ordered the spice-rubbed lamb loin instead. Holy Crap! It was one of the best meals that I've had in a long time. I'm glad they were out of the steak! Then wrapped it up with my favorite dessert, their budino which I decided to pair with their recommended dessert wine. It was amazing! It's a bit on the pricey side, but it's a great splurge for special occasions. read more

While visiting Bainbridge Island we tried the new location for the Agate Restaurant. Our server Alicia was awesome and even put up with my humor, which our family always says - "sorry". For early in the week, we seemed to get the last minute reservation. Service and food was very, very good. I had the Bouillabaisse, which was very good as a mixture of a San Fran Cioppino and a Pacific NW Fish stew. If you are in town or plan on being in town, make plans to stop there, it's within walking distance to the Ferry. read more

I had the opportunity to eat here a few nights ago. The food, though pretty pricy, was delicious and the service was great. I must say I truly miss the coziness and comfort of the Suquamish location. The new restaurant is modern, fancy, and with an open concept. I did not feel the warmth of this new building. The music (unnecessary) was so loud that customers were having to talk so loudly to their dining partners in order to be heard. With the openness of the restaurant the acoustics are bad anyway, so why music? Parking is an issue as well. There are very few spaces. We could not find the one handicap spot. Either not marked or being used so proceeded to the one spot underground by the elevator. Fine until we got off the elevator at the top of 2 flights of stairs. Not such a good handicap spot. I'm sure there are lots of reasons for moving to the island, but I am sorry. read more

Great birthday at Agate Restaurant! Off-street parking or easy ferry walk-off, next to BIMA. Different cocktails, starters, entrees, and desserts for menu sample. V, VG, GF, and NF available. Old Fashioneds were my family go-to cocktail: their Tom Lombardi didn't disappoint. Well-chosen wine list with by-the-glass options, including a bubbly my friend couldn't pass up. Ordered their famous Brussel sprouts, radicchio salad, daily pasta, and scallops. All fantastic! After-dinner coffee with shareable in-house desserts (one chocolate, one fruity), made birthday friendly with candles when we called ahead. Reservations insured prompt seating but waiting/being seated in the bar looked fun! Drink and starter orders taken by hostess, waitstaff had menu updates and recommendations. Tag team service left no timing gaps. Looking forward to cool cocktails and pupus on the patio! Air conditioning inside. This place has a wonderful group of people who serve. The waiters are the best. Management and the kitchen are letting them down. With a 6:30 reservation we were seated at 7:00 after reminding them we were still there. There was a long wait for the first course, which was really good BTW...and 30 minutes until the main course. I should not have to ask where our food is. Two of the dishes were Luke warm and the halibut was overcooked. This might be acceptable if it was an average restaurant with prices to match. But for over $400 and 2.5 hours Agate can do better. Pay attention management, don't let it slip, you're better than this. read more

I know I should love this place, and quite frankly the food is quite good....but. The service is horrible. We have been there 3 times, and each experience was the same. A VERY long wait for attention, no clear idea who our server was, and very slow spotty service. A two hour dinner is too long. This was the first time my husband and I have been to a restaurant, other than take-out, since COVID began, and we were so happy that Agate provides outside dining, with space heaters! We were celebrating my husband's birthday, and it was an outstanding evening. The wait staff were all friendly, helpful and well protected. The food was exceptional. I started with the roasted cauliflower w/sriracha, which had a great kick to it. My entrée was the halibut w/red potatoes, wild mushrooms, black garlic vinaigrette and arugula. When halibut is done well, it's one of my favorite foods, and this was delicious. The fish was cooked to perfection and was well complemented by the sauce. My husband started with the steak tartar, a Painted Hills prime tenderloin with tarragon crema, Beecher's smoked flagship cheddar and NW black truffle potato chips. The beef was like butter and so tasty! I highly recommend Agate! read more

Great atmosphere and wait staff, but food still lacking. They need to spend more money to hire a top notch chef. There always seems to be one dish that is screwed up (ie. Fish overcooked, duck extremely tough, etc). Also, value not there any longer, as the portion size to price ratio is not good. read more
