A wise person once said, 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it. It appears to have new ownership/management that has 'lost the plot'. Sadly, The Madison Diner missed that briefing. I was eager to return to this establishment, since I haven't been here in a few years. Regrettably, today's visit was a disappointment. Maybe when I return things will be good again? THE ROSES: TMD is a restaurant I dearly want to like a lot more than I do right now. For those who are retro fans, the dining space, which is an impeccably restored authentic diner, is a real treat. Restrooms are clean. The staff, while sometimes rather confused, tries hard and is pleasant. THE THORNS: It's the food, stupid. This establishment, which used to serve authentic diner cuisine now seems to be excessively 'interpreting' dishes, and they're too derivative for their own good. The most egregious example was the Chicken Fried Steak, which was battered and fried *chicken* smothered in sausage gravy. Note to the owners/chefs: they call it Chicken Fried STEAK for a reason. I ordered the biscuits and gravy instead, which was uninspired. The sausage gravy itself was quite good, but the biscuits, which they boast about, were dry and hard. I get better out of a tube of Pillsbury 'Grands' buttermilk biscuits from the grocery store. My wife's Joe's Special was also a disappointment: the chunks of overdone ground beef appear to have been diced of bits of Sysco hamburger patties, and the dish was assembled with indifference. The tomatoes were uniquely flavorless, and the whole dish was rather under seasoned. On top of it all, a request for ketchup (which should always be at the table in a diner) was forgotten, and I was still billed for the more expensive CFS rather than the Biscuits and Gravy I ended up getting. Also sorely missed were the Bloody Marys. These were a highlight. Did they decide not to renew their liquor license? THE VERDICT: All in all, a once stellar homage to diners has slid into overpriced mediocrity. The building is the same, but the soul is gone. If you want a true diner experience, I suggest you ride the ferry over to Seattle and visit either Voula's (U District) of The Chelan Cafe (West Seattle). The Madison Diner is a DINO (Diner In Name Only). Neither recommend nor discourage. Your results may vary. read more

I saw so many highly rated breakfast places in Bainbridge Island that it was hard to pick one for a light breakfast. We asked the local barber & his customer for their pick for a great breakfast and this is where they directed us. They were spot on. From the lovely servers who address their customers by name to the food & fun, retro vibe, we loved it all. We shared a daily special crab Benedict and had some coffee and freshly squeezed OJ. A lot of hollandaise sauce I've had is not more than creamy yellowness. This stuff, which I learned they make fresh every morning, was rich and bright with lemon flavor. I absolutely appreciate the effort they put into it & hollandaise was the perfect counterpoint to the crab (which isn't my normal breakfast choice). Perfect! read more

Had to ask for more hollandaise sauce because there was barely any on. Got only a small portion of salmon. Used to love the hash browns. But now they were barely cooked on either side. Such a great experience here today! Our waitress who I think was the owner (not sure) was fantastic. She was kind, and clearly working really hard. We stopped in on a Friday in May after taking the ferry over from Seattle. There weren't many breakfast places on the map, so we chose this place to go to. It had a very classic diner vibe, and it wasn't super busy when we went. We had to wait outside for a server to come and seat us, but it was only around 5-10 minutes. Once we sat down we were given menus and there was a tic tac toe game on the table so that was super cute. However, I had looked up the menu online before going in and was devastated to find that it wasn't the same menu as the online version. The waitress said that they changed their online menu a while ago, but the menu I had was directly linked from their google search, so it was a bit disappointing. The food was still really good and the service was super kind and friendly, but you could tell they were prioritizing the regulars, which is to be expected in a sense, but she forgot to come by a couple times with things that we asked for, including the waters we had to ask for three times. Great little vintage diner in BI. The inside was very comfortable and could accommodate larger parties. The diner closes fairly early so keep track of their hours. The staff was very friendly and did a great job. Would do better to have more wait staff as there was only 1 serving tables with all other staff working orders behind the counter. Classic dinner! I've always experienced the most friendly and down to earth interactions here. Food is consistent. We stop in periodically to grab breakfast on a weekday. Classic diner food, but I have to say that the Benedict sauce (which usually goes really bad or really well) surprised me. I'd order it again. Ask for your waffle extra crispy. Prices are a bit high, but expected in Bainbridge. Only thing I'd improve is the coffee. Parking - small private lot. Spaces are on the tighter side when full so I'd leave the sports car at home. There are several side spots to parallel into across the lot by the bush as well. I prefer these or the spot right next to the handicap. read more

My wife and I went here for breakfast so I could fulfill my nostalgia thing. The diner was constructed the year I was born...1948...and it operated for years in Willow Grove, PA just north of Philly. I grew up about 20 miles away in Gloucester County, South Jersey. Years ago now, a Bainbridge man bought the diner, had it deconstructed, shipped across country, and reconstructed in its current site. I miss the old diners I used to eat at back east, so I had to check out one that came from so close to my childhood home. It was cool to see and eat at, but that's about it. I believe it has different owners now. The servers who took care of us were friendly, considerate, respectful and attentive. The food was pretty blah...and quite pricey. My wife had their Griddle Combo ($18.25); a waffle, two eggs, and two sausage patties. Not much you can screw up with that! I had the Classic Benny ($18.25); eggs Benedict with two poached eggs on super thin tasteless pieces of ham on two tough, chewy English muffin halves and covered with equally tasteless Hollandaise sauce. My Hollandaise is way better and even the packaged grocery store McCormick's Hollandaise would have been a super improvement. I tasted NO butter and NO lemon in the diner's sauce. Came with dry hashbrowns. Coffee is $4 a cup with refills. What in creation happened to the price of restaurant coffee??? Our total bill with tip was about $60...for breakfast...yikes!! read more

My wife and I stopped into Madison on a Monday morning for breakfast before catching the ferry to return home. Free parking can be found in the small parking lot. Discover is an accepted form of payment. GPay is also available. The diner itself is an old refurbished dining car which made our breakfast that much more fun. Seating can be found at the counter, outside and inside at booths. The grill area is visible to all. We arrived at opening and had no problem getting seated right away. As we were leaving, there were no open tables left. I imagine that Madison experiences wait times for seating. Breakfast is served all day long for those who enjoy sleeping in. Local canned craft beer, hard cider and wines are available to sip on while dining. During our visit, my wife sipped on bottomless coffee with cream and sugar for $3.50. I had water. We shared the Heuvos Rancheros for $16 + $2 up-charge for avocado: Two crispy corn tortillas, salsa Verde, and two eggs topped with sour cream and scallions. Served with black beans. I am constantly on the hunt for exceptional Heuvos Rancheros and Madison did not disappoint. Our breakfast was plated beautifully and was savory, filling and delicious. As it was brunch time, I grabbed a frozen peach mimosa which was absolutely delicious and was a nice cool down after a brisk walk through town. Now down to the food...absolutely delicious. I got the corned beef hash, sunny side up eggs and toast with fresh strawberry jam. The hash had chunks of tender beef with peppers and onions. It was topped with hash browns and cheese. The toast was delicious and the strawberry jam is some of the best jam I've ever had. I could have ate it by the spoonful. As for the eggs, cooked to perfection with bright yolks. We were a group of 6 and ordered various things from vegan, vegetarian, to crab Benedict. I liked my crab Benedict and the waffle was really good. My parents have come to this diner for years, every Saturday that they've been able. Rain or shine, they are there when the diner opens and eat the same thing. Believe it or not, I haven't been there ever...until a couple of weeks ago when my folks felt good enough to step out again after recent illness. What a menu! I got so excited wanting to try the pork belly, only to hear "we have everything BUT the pork belly." Aw, snap! Plan B: my husband and I are literally on the hunt for the best Corned Beef Hash on the West Coast, so, naturally, I had to give that a try. I admit to not being sure about cheese on my hash, but hey...when in Rome, right? I did ask for poached eggs and I have to tell you: I have low expectations of diners getting poached eggs right...but these guys NAILED it. The corned beef was sliced, not chunks so my guess is that this is the same corned beef that gets used on sandwiches for lunch. I prefer chunks but this wasn't fatal...corned beef was tasty and moist. Potatoes were their hashbrowns, nice and crispy and way plentiful. What floored me was the biscuit. Oh, Lordy...what a flaky, tender and TALL piece of baking that was. I don't normally eat biscuits because they invariably disappoint, but these were so good it might make me brave biscuits and gravy again. Sadly my parents weren't feeling up to going back last Saturday because I was hopeful pork belly would be available. Keep your fingers crossed for next weekend though. Maybe I'll get lucky! After waiting 40 minutes to get seated, I ordered country fried steak & eggs and my wife ordered a crab benedict. The waitress then told us the sauce for the Benedict was oversalted and not good. Ok. My wife changed to crab omelette. Ten minutes later, waitress tells us they are out of crab. Ok, my wife then orders huevos rancheros. We waited another 40 minutes for my country fried steak. Then another 20 minutes before the rancheros arrived. The steak was good. The rancheros, however, was awful. A plate of beans, some tortilla chips and topped with 2 eggs. My wife ate the eggs. We paid and left. Almost 3 hours wasted in our day. The cooks can't serve two egg dishes at the same time? Terrible efficiency in the kitchen. The waitress was nice and she knew how bad the timing was and apologized for it. As bad as our experience was, we still left a nice tip for our waitress.
