well I've been saying for years that I need to come check out DTLA Cheese Superette and this week I finally did, only to learn that they are closing in eight days. Not all is lost, though, as they're conjoining with kippered down the street. I'm not sure if the sandwiches will survive the merger but I hope they do. I had an incredible ham toasted sandwich with a crispy cheese skirt that I saved for last. When I finally tried DTLA Cheese Superette, it turned out that they would be closing several weeks later. However, I'm happy I got to visit twice and am happy that their sister spot Kippered will still live on. This place sold a variety of items including cheese, cured meats, tinned fish, and other foods. I found the service to be approachable and welcoming, and it was nice to have a relaxed place to have a meal that was also close to Grand Central Market. During my first visit, I tried their breakfast/brunch menu and was impressed by their pancakes with their thin and crispy texture. The pancakes were so good, I knew that I had to try them again before the shop closed. Now that the market has closed, I am hoping that some of their food menu items will show up at Kippered. read more

I last visited this elevated cheese shop when they were in the Grand Central Market. Three years ago they moved to their own brick and mortar a half block south of the Market on the corner of 4th and Broadway. This larger space now serves as a cheese shop, upscale market and fast-casual eatery. I came here for lunch after walking through GCM and not feeling inspired. They still offer a large case of cheeses from around the world, which can be purchased by weight. I think a large part of their business is creating made-to-order charcuterie platters and boards of cheeses and meats. In their deli case, they have grab and go plates of 3 cheeses (meat optional), pickles and dried fruit. The gourmet market also offers fresh produce, specialty items like premium butters, Rancho Gordo beans, house made items like chicken stock, pickles, etc, and meats. Plus fresh juices and lemonade and canned/bottled drinks. I came for the eatery. They offer cold sandwiches and breads, plus made to order hot sandwiches. They have an attractive Sunday Brunch menu also. I went with the ham melt, which is their OG grilled cheese with ham added. I also ordered their "Always Creamy Tomato Soup", both to go. The soup was delish. It came with garlicky croutons which alas were soggy by the time I ate them. The sandwich was excellent. It had 3 different cheeses, ham, and caramelized onions on brioche. It was grilled to perfection with a substantial cheese skirt, and came with pickles and whole grain mustard. A very tasty lunch and a nice alternative to GCM. They had a fair amount of seating if you decide to eat in. I'd definitely shop their market more extensively next time, and would like to try their brunch someday. They also have a wine/champagne/tinned fish bar next door called Kippered, that was packed when I walked by in the evening. read more

Just down the street from Grand Central, the shop has a chill vibe and, barring the grilled cheese, some good food. Unfortunately, the grilled cheese didn't have that salty, cheesy pop that a great grilled cheese has and I'd recommend that you skip it, along with the ham version that shares the same base. I would, however, highly recommend the tomato soup and the green salad. Get a cheese box, with or without salami. Buy some tinned fish or meat to go. read more

This is such an unassuming spot in DTLA. But honestly, it has one of the best tasting grilled cheese I've ever had in my life. I'm so glad I ordered the OG Grilled Cheese. It's basically a 4 cheese sandwich because it contains 3 cheddar cheeses and mozzarella. If you love cheese, you will fall in love with this grilled cheese. It's gooey and savory, the bread is crunchy, and it even has crispy cheese edges from where the cheese hit the grill surface. Good God, my mouth is watering just writing this. It also comes with a brown mustard and pickles, which really uplevel the whole thing. I also tried their lemonade, which was fabulous. They have a few fresh squeezed juices. There are also a few packaged items, cheeses, bread, and produce. And you can order charcuterie as well. There are only a few tables inside and outside, but the ambiance is pleasant enough. Sooo incredibly happy I finally got to stop by DTLA Cheese Superette! I was a huge fan of their stall at the Grand Central Market and am relieved they opened up a much bigger brick and mortar. There's a few tables inside and seats along the wall, so this is the perfect spot for a lunchtime treat. Upon entering, you pass by the cheese display to your right and the pantry wall to your left. Their pantry items look amazing and offer some really cool imported products. The cheese display is reminiscent of what they had at GCM! You can order your freshly cut cheese there. If you keep walking, you'll get to the counter area where you can order from their fresh prepared menu, or their grab and go sandwiches. There also a fridge near the front that houses cold drinks! I ordered a grab n go baguette sandwich and a carrot/cauliflower soup. My sandwich was divine - excellent bread, meat, and cheese. I believe I paid $14 and for a hefty amount of sandwich for that price. I was very full after finishing my meal. The service is friendly but there aren't too many people behind the counter, so a little patience was required. It was well worth it! This is the place to go if you're feeling cheesy. Really though you want a great sandwich and soup this is the place to go in DTLA. The BLT is maybe the best sandwich I've had here. Can't forget the pickled veggies that come with the sandwich great pairing. The tomato soup is always on point. There are seasonal soups as well to choose from. Never had a salad maybe one day. There are pre made sandwiches to choose from as well. Last but not least the mac and cheese is great not gooey but cheesy. Menu has sandwiches, soups and salads. Pretty simple. The place was nearly empty--just two patrons wrapping up and a staff member focused on adjusting some shelving or something behind the counter. From the moment I arrived, the person working seemed visibly distracted, almost jittery, like they had ants in their pants. I asked for help, but shelving apparently took priority. I tried once more, asking about crackers, but again, I got the sense that my presence was an interruption rather than an opportunity to assist. Eventually, I just walked out. I'd rather show up empty-handed to my event than feel humiliated buying something from someone more invested in putting up shelves than serving a customer. This is the perfect neighborhood superette with all kinds of fancy, high quality food from which to choose. One of the standouts of DTLA. The BLT and the grilled cheese are two of my favorites, but this is also my go to spot for my "girl dinner" of charcuterie and a baguette. In the summer, I get a baguette, burrata, and an heirloom tomato - they do a great job picking produce and their tomatoes are killer. It shouldn't be surprising that the menu is mouthwatering: mac and cheese, mozzarella/tomato/basil sandwich, avocado toast, BLT with mozzarella (why is it not BLMT standard?and BURRATA TOAST with beets, roasted garlic, and pesto. They put literally so much cheese in this thing that it oozes out of the sandwich and fries, providing a border of fried cheese around the perimeter of the sandwich. I'm sorry to say, but I had to knock off a star for the BLT I had today from DTLA Cheese... it was nothing like the first one I had months ago. The one today was very lackluster. The bread was too hard, not enough sauce and cheese, and just fell short for me. I had high expectations because my first experience here was so memorable and I was so looking forward to having another amazing BLT, but maybe it was just an off day for them? Give me ALL the cheese! No really, DTLA Cheese really must've given me all of the cheese in this one meal I had with my sister! The grilled ham sandwich was totally delicious. It was rich and creamy with its hot and soft caramelized onions and perfectly toasty brioche bun that held together the punchy cheddar I love so dearly. The Mac and cheese with bacon was phenomenal too. Beyond smooth, creamy, but also pretty unctuous. My suggestion: Don't add the bacon, it may just be a little too much (and it tastes so good on its own it doesn't even need it!). We didn't have too many options for a quick breakfast here due to long lines (curse you, eggslut!), but DTLA cheese really satisfied in the am, though it was a pretty heavy way to start off the day. I must say however, the service didn't feel welcoming at all. Dude, turn that frown upside down. And on top of it - we got turned down when we asked to sub our bread, boo. After two weeks in LA, I can confidently say that the burrata toast was the single best thing I ate during my time in California. The burrata was creamy and delicious, and I don't know how the garlic toast was made, but it was something that I wish I knew how to replicate. The pesto was a nice addition to the dish, and all in all, it's something I could eat over again and again and very well might be the best thing I've ever ordered and eaten from a restaurant period.
