Super cute spot with awesome food! We came here on a rainy Saturday afternoon, and ordered seven dishes, expecting the typical small share plates. Nope, The portions were generous and incredibly tasty. If you like buttery garlic items, I'd highly recommend: the Victor's Carabinieros (garlic prawns), the Prego ou Bifana (beef sando) and the costeletas de Borrego (lamb chops). The drink menu alone was stunning. We tried the Wake the Dead and the twist on the Pisco Sour, and would want to come back to the mezcals!! Firstly, what a cute place, everything is gorgeous from the tiles behind the bar, to the loft sitting area and outside space. Even the bathroom with its shrine wall is interesting. The servers, bar tenders and host were all very knowledgeable and helpful. This was a zero snark zone! I can't stop gushing about the cocktail I had. It was called a Majorca something and it had strawberries, guava and whiskey. I wish I could remember the name of the bar tender that made it, she had long dark hair. We also ordered the margarita trio, strawberry, cucumber and pineapple cilantro. The strawberry was good, the others ok. The small glasses had rims literally caked in salt which overpowered the cocktails. After we wiped most of that off, they were better. My partner had the empanadas that were great. We also shared the baked goats cheese with tomatoes, and I had a tin (mackerel pate with pickles, salt and bread) all really good. I wish there were more grilled fish dishes, squid dominated the seafoods. The cod fritters were cooked in the same oil as meat products, which was limiting for pescatarians. Been wanting to try Aguardente for a while and happy i finally did! Made reservations online, highly recommend that since they can fill up quickly! No parking lot but there was enough street parking. Went for lunch and was greeted right away. Sat in the back patio; when making reservations there were lots of options of different seating. I chose patio nook, which was cute but would be more if there to lounge, have drinks (the tables are lower, compared it to sitting in ur living room instead of dining room). Indoor options also include nook, table or bar. Our server was super nice and was ok moving us to a table. The food was great! I didn't order a drink but my bff had a caipirinha, loved it and ordered a second! For food we shared a goat cheese and bread app plus fried plantain plate. For entree i had the octopus and she had seafood paella. The goat cheese was so creamy, the bread warm and crunchy crust! Perfection! The octopus was good but didn't come with anything on side, or any bread (would have gone great with the olive oil on it). I brought my daughter here for a birthday dinner. We are dedicated foodies and are always looking for new adventures. A young man, who I met strongly suggest this establishment. It's a rather small restaurant but big enough. It is very cozy and warm. There's indoor and outdoor dining. I look forward to dining here in warmer weather. There is a nice sized outdoor seating area. So for eats we had: Even though we both dislike cilantro, we ordered the Tula fries, which are fried plantains. Finger licking yummy. Next; ground beef empanadas. They did not disappoint. I do not like lamb but my daughter thoroughly enjoyed them. I ordered the little necks. They were ok but didn't knock my sandals off. So if you want to go here, definitely make a reservation first since they tend to be booked but definitely go. They do great Portuguese tapas here. I only had room for two, the pasteis de bacalhas (codfish fritters) which were low-key better than the ones I actually had in Lisbon and Porto and the queijo fresco which was the bread and cheese course I needed that day. There orange wine was also delicious (very dry, if that's what you like) and Moda Antiga (the old fashioned) was also great. Is the word CUTE, code for tight and noisy? I might have enjoyed this place but didn't stay even with a reservation. We arrived 10 minutes before our reservation, and entered the main, ONLY indoor dining space, it was packed. It shares the small space with a large bar, which was completely occupied. We were standing by the door and the hostess told us that our table was right AT THE DOOR. Two seats at a tiny table. We asked for something further in the restaurant, we had a reservation and had requested indoor seating. Additionally, we did not want ALL the exiting and entering activity 2 feet in front us. She offered the front porch, in 90° weather or 2 arm chairs with a side table as the last option. We thanked her and canceled our reservation. The lesson here, read the reviews for any code words describing the place such as "intimate", "cute", "cozy". They all translate into small and tight. The food and cocktails may in fact be amazing, but I enjoy a bit of comfort when I dine out, so this restaurant will be a hard pass for me. read more

I've been looking to try this restaurant out for a while now and finally got the chance! Super glad I made that decision! I will say it is much smaller than what I expected but it still has such a gentle/ calm feel that you don't mind!! My sever was great and was able to ask the bartender to make an off the menu drink for a friend and I! As for the food? We went to Aguardente to purchase a gift card, but my husband insisted we try it out first to make sure it's good. So glad we did, because it was fantastic! We went on a Saturday for lunch and had to sit in the outside (covered) area because the inside was full. It is a small place, so MAKE RESERVATIONS!! The outside covered area was lovely, though, and with the space heaters, it was toasty even though it was early December! This is a tapas place. I would recommend going with a few people and settling in for a few hours. Especially in that outdoor area where they have intimate seating. Great atmosphere inside and out. The menu is primarily Portuguese/Guatemalan/Azorean-based and yes, that is as amazing as it sounds! We started with drinks: Debaixo de Figueira for me and and I think hubbie got the hibiscus soda. We ordered the Queijo de Cabra and that blew us away! We could have eaten that all day (in fact, hubbie learned out to make it at home so we can have it as often as we want!). We also had the Tula Fries (plantains with creamy cilantro dip), Almondegas (Spanish meatballs) and Ameijoas a Portuguesa (little necks in white wine sauce). We. Loved. EVERYTHING! Finally, the service was great. Very attentive wait staff. This is a bit of a hidden gem because it's small and kind of tucked right behind a busy area. Very much enjoyed the dining experience here. It's an intimate atmosphere in which you have to get closer to your friends to converse due to the background bustle. The tapas are variable and all pair nicely with the many wine options on the menu. There are some interesting tapas that you can't get elsewhere in PVD. This restaurant has a pretty laid back setup the decor is nice inside. They manage this place very well and have one of the cleanest and incentive bathrooms I've ever seen. They have many good Mezcals and tequilas to try from, I tried the Jolgorio Arrequeño. The service at the bar was friendly and attentive. I had high hopes for my first time dining here and they absolutely surpassed my expectations. I've been following their social media since they opened and had been dying to try them out but I'm not good at planning ahead and reservations were always booked up when I'd try. So our anniversary was the perfect occasion to actually plan ahead and grab a reservation. Reservations are a must, the space is small and very popular. We were seated near the door and saw many people turned away because they were fully booked for the night. Just about a month prior to our visit we had spent 2 weeks on vacation in Portugal so the cravings for Portuguese cuisine was strong. They did not disappoint, everything we ate was amazing. We started out with the marinated olives, pasteis de bacalhau, batatas fritas, and the queijo fresco. I love queijo fresco but OMG was this the most delicious version I've ever had anywhere. It was so good we were tempted to get a second order of it but there were too many other things we wanted to try on the menu. We moved on to some heavier items and got the almondegas and the aguacate rellenos. Again both were delicious. We were so full already but I couldn't leave without getting a pastel de nata and a galão. The pasteis were warm and good, they were a little overcooked but we still enjoyed them. I mean I've never had a bad pastel de nata. Not only was the food amazing but the drinks were great too. So many of them sounded delicious but I went with the red Sintra Sangria and my husband had the Debaixo da Figueira. My sangria was really good, two glasses went down very easily. I brought back from Ginja from our trip and look forward to adding it to my sangria at home. I stole a few sips of my husbands cocktail and it was very good. We really enjoyed the ambiance inside as well. Very warm and inviting, we had great service and all the other guests seemed to be enjoying their time there as well. It is a small space inside but it reminded us of a lot of the small restaurants we visited in Portugal. There are so many other things on the menu we can't wait to come back and try. But seriously get the queijo fresco, I'll be back just for that! read more

I can't say enough great things about this place! When we approached it it had a good vibe with seating out front and when you go inside it's even more adorable. The staff was very friendly and seemed to legitimately love working there. The foods and the cocktails were top-notch. There's also outdoor seating in the back which we enjoyed. Most of the dishes are very BREAD forward--at one point with 3-4 Tapas dishes on the table there were over 12-14 pieces of bread! Goat Cheese, Queijo Fresco cheese dishes were ok--problem with all their dishes was they are greasey--oiley. I can only assume this is from inferiors oils! Clams were very good. My daughter treated me to Mother's Day lunch at this delightful portuguese inspired restaurant nestled into Fox Point, Providence. Easy to find just off of 195 and Gano Street. The ambiance is charming and authentic to Portugal. The decor has a beautiful tiled wall, shelves stocked with wine, warm color pallette, and cozy furnishings. We dined on Plantain Cups filled with zucchini, corn, tomato, garlic, red onion, cilantro, and avocado, Chilled Marinated Octopus Salad in olive oil, red and white onion, lemon juice, parsley, and Seafood Paella. The Paella was loaded with little necks, mussels, shrimp, and squid mixed in a paprika spicey ricey. We took three desserts to go....flan (my favorite), Leche cake (my daughter's favorite), and churros with a caramel cup dunker. The wines from Portugal were pallette pleasers with our entrées. I just wanted to give a shout out to your whole team after an exceptional dining experience that I shared with my husband at your bar last weekend.  I have been wanting to try your restaurant for ages, but in the past when I have tried to secure a reservation, I haven't had luck (and now I can absolutely see why!) but on Sunday evening when presented with a last minute date night, you had space at the bar and my husband and I were able to join you for an early dinner.  The vibe upon entering was fantastic and we were immediately welcomed and seated at the bar.  Chris quickly introduced himself and the rest of the bar team as we sat and gave us time to settle in.  We ordered cocktails and waited for them as we finalized our selections for dinner.  Cocktails were delivered and our order was taken- everything was seamless and timing was perfect.   As a first time diner, I often take in the conversations and decor around me and I was simply blown away by your team's ability to welcome each and every guest who walked through the door with a warm greeting. My husband and I both have hospitality backgrounds and it's something that so many restaurants do not understand the value of- I couldn't stop commenting to my husband about how I haven't felt this "taken care of" in years.  The warmth and welcome that your team leads with is untouchable.  I don't know how many restaurants lead with "Welcome in," upon arrival but often the words lack sincerity and often come off as cold to me.  Words alone do not exude hospitality in my mind and your team nails it!  Our plates were divine and we cannot wait to come back to experience more of the menu when we can find the time for another date night. We had the clams, prawns, tinned tuna, potatoes and octopus.  Thank you tremendously for the hospitality and for giving me something to smile about all week. read more

Popped in on a whim after a hearty recommendation from someone - so, no, we did not have any reservations. It was a very rainy night, and the restaurant was quite full and busy. While initially, the place and food looked amazing - there were no tables available in the main part of the restaurant, and we were led to a chilly, tent-covered (patio?) addition - with rain pounding above, small, blah-tables spread out, and a tacky soda machine in the corner. Nothing like the quaint, tasteful space we just walked through. The comparison was stark, and we just could not justify spending good $ on a meal in a space that had the atmosphere of an average diner. We decided not to stay - but hope to return again sometime, as everything looked and smelled amazing - so long as we are able to be sat in the main area. I understand no small business wants to turn away customers, and this is Aguardente's attempt to accommodate more people. However, I think they should offer some sort of discount/accommodation/(maybe gift card?) if the only tables available are in THAT section of the restaurant. It's just not an equal experience - so the bill should reflect it accordingly. read more

A hidden gem and safe space, where everyone smiles, as soon as they walk in because everyone is greeted with warmth and kindness. The food is unique and delicious. The staff should not be called staff. They are amazing fellow humans who take the time to get to know their patrons, and make each person have the best experience. The ambiance is magical! I'm so excited to share this amazing place in PVD I didn't have enough information about this place but could feel something good about this place. So I tried it with my loved friends. Wow! I think this is the best Portuguese restaurant in PVD! Every plate they brought amazed us. Especially, Seafood Paella and Victor's Carabinerios which is garlicky Jumbo prawns. And the patio is so lovely. This place brought some nice exotic vibes to us. I want share the dishes I had. As the name of the foods on the menu might be unfamiliar to you. _Seafood Paella: A Portuguese take on paella with little necks, shrimp, mussels and squid) (I loved this Paella. As I don't like to have sausage and chicken in my Paella as most of Restaurants do. _Victor's Carabinerios: Garlicky jumbo prawns served with Portuguese roll (The sauce made with olive oil, lemon, garlic with pinch of secret ingredients is amazing. I dipped my bread in the last drop of the sauce) _Queijo de Cabra: Baked goat cheese place in a tomato garlic paprika sauce with crostini (It's a classice Portuguese bar food goes well with my Portuguese wine ) _Tula Fries: Plantains with a creamy cilantro dip _Tacos Callejeros: Pork chorizo on a corn tortilla. This taste reminded me of Korean spicy pork bbq) _Flan : yum _ Tresleches cake: moist cake witj vanilla cream, topped with a hibiscuses Despite all these good points, I took one star because of dirty plates and cup. My review is the picture of what I wrote in the physical notebook they give to you at the end of the meal. A real-life version of Yelp reviews. Every dish we got was incredible and extremely fresh-tasting. You can tell the quality of the ingredients is important here. The highlights were the octopus and farmer's cheese. The octopus was incredibly fresh and not at all chewy with a light hit of lemon, vinegar, and oil that lifted the dish. The farmer's cheese was unprecedented - the flavor was so subtle yet firmly present, it was creamy but not overly thick or heavy, and the onions, garlic, olive oil, and paprika mixture spread on top of the Portuguese cornbread was actual heaven in a bite. Victor, if you read this, I'll work on my counting if you give me an extra garlic Carabineiros and get an actual phone number for the restaurant. Till next time, Aguardente. read more

This recently-opened spot is such a gem! We reserved a patio nook, which was so cozy and relaxing with pretty lights overhead. The interior decor and bathrooms are similarly nice and intimate. The small plates menu is intriguing with dishes from Portugal as well as Mexico and Guatemala. The service was fantastic - friendly and speedy! We especially enjoyed the aguacate relleno, farmers cheese, and lamb. And the cocktails (Sintra Sangria + Lisboa), of course! For dessert, we got the pastel de nata with aguardente pairing so that we could try the namesake brandy. It did not disappoint! When you're brought your check, they also bring a notebook where you can write/draw whatever you want, and the staff review it every night. Such a fun idea, and it was cool to look at what others have written. I wish Aguardente much success and will be recommending to anyone in the area! read more

Came on a weekday evening with a friend after work and found the ambiance to be cozy and lovely. The staff were wonderful in getting us settled and offering recommendations for food and drink choices. We settled on the seasonal hot toddy which was rich and spicy, the perfect wintery beverage, and the Debaixo de Figueira, a sweet delightfully fruity fig cocktail. For appetizers we tried the patatas bravas which were standard but nothing life changing, the rellenitos with an impeccable chocolate espresso sauce, the mackerel pate which was interesting and new for the both of us and recommended by our server. I would definitely ask for the bread toasted next time for the pate but it was an enjoyable new flavor for us. For our main we had the seafood paella which was unfortunately disappointing despite the great things we had heard-- it was too wet and salty but had a good amount of seafood. We finished off the night happily with a pastel de nata martini which was a perfect creamy sweet dessert cocktail. Overall an incredible experience with a lovely vibe and tasty drinks -- I would skip the paella if you're considering it. read more

Forgive me, Yelp. It has been a very long time since I wrote a review. Years, even. I moved to a small town - the kind of place where you know everyone. And I didn't want to be the neighborhood Yelper. But I realize Yelp has been my little personal travel food blog- whenever I go anywhere, I return to my earlier reviews to remember the name of that perfect little restaurant where I had lunch, or that amazing cookie I grabbed while walking through a city. So here I am. OK. Aguardente. We were in Providence for a family event, and we had dinner here. Highlights were the octopus salad, the frijol dip, the batatas fritas (always), and the seafood paella. The dessert menu is a bit more limited- we ended up with the tres leches cake which was tasty, but not as memorable as the meal.
