Usually when I fly to Canada, it's a direct experience. When booking kinda sorta last minute, a layover in Seattle or Portland happens. And unfortunately it was a hot, hot mess at the Air Canada gates yesterday. Travel delays are totally normal and expected. I try not to freak out about it since it's beyond my span of control. It's also not as bad when the airline employees are transparent about the situation. However, when everyone working at the gate has no clue what's going on and tells you that much, it's a little concerning. As was the case yesterday with multiple delays as well as canceled flights, the attendant in uniform I spoke with told me straight up, "I don't know what's happening over here, ask him." (pointing to a man in a safety vest running interference with other customers). Ooookay. So that's how it's gonna be. Buckle up, Buttercup. It's going to be a bumpy ride! Even more concerning was the travelers whose flight was canceled not once, not twice, but three times over the span of 36 hours at PDX. They were telling their story to anyone who'd listen while we waited for our 2+ hour delay into Vancouver. At that point, they should've just rented a car and driven to Canada... it would've taken less time. Luckily I'm flying back to the States direct on United. First air canada flight I ever took- window was literally coming out of the cabin wall (see picture below) and I had to push it back in each time we hit any bumps. Then Air canada lost my luggage- I returned to the airport to pick it up and NO ONE WAS THERE though they said they would be. Phone line also wasn't working due to high call volume. General costumer service at the airport said I would have to wait another two hours till staff returned to speak with someone. Will not be flying with Air Canada again. read more

Horrible and Disregarding Service! Air Canada loaded and then randomly removed 10 pieces of luggage from a Vancouver bound flight for 'weight purposes', without any consideration or notification to the unsuspecting passengers. This was revealed by the luggage agent handling the claims. UNREAL. Even worse, there was no possible way to get the luggage to the arriving airport in a timely manner due to limited flights. Most of the affected passengers were boarding cruise ships with minimal time and resources to purchase essentials or pivot to this astronomical loss. To make matters worse, they did not forward the luggage to the advancing ports as promised. Nor was I able to track any current location or updated information on their website. Long story short, I was without my luggage until I returned home, 12 days later...and forced to celebrate my once-in-a-lifetime, milestone birthday cruise in tourist-shirts and sweats. A HEARTBREAKINGLY RUINED TRIP. Unreal and astonishing that this airline could be so disregarding and inept. I got back from vacation on June 29th flying with Air Canada and my bag never made it home. It has been almost a month and I have called multiple times to ask about reimbursement for having to repurchase so many lost items. I have repeatedly been told to "be patient" and have had extremely slow response over email. I am understanding over losing my bag but I'm livid about not getting a response about reimbursement when I've submitted expenses, called, and emailed asking at least for a direct answer/timeline. Every reply has just been to "be patient" and "we are actively working on it". This is absolutely ridiculous to not get a straightforward answer after a month. I will never fly through Air Canada again and I highly discourage any of my friends who travel to use them. read more

An hour before check in there was only one single agent checking everyone in for an international flight including priority. It was needless to say slow and people were getting antsy. Finally after 20 minutes and the line creeping long, another agent came to help out which expedited it a little but we were already at the front. Luckily we came early. There was still security to pass through. May need some improvement on their staff management. It seems like that was a common occurrence. Flight was fine and service on board was decent. Today, delayed flights and overbooked planes are the norm, but Air Canada takes bad customer service to a new level. Our flight from Paris to Toronto was delayed by over 3 hours. No big deal. It happens. Toronto to Portland was another story. Because the connection was tight, Air Canada decided to bump us to a Toronto to Vancouver for an overnight, then onto Portland. They didn't bother to consult us; they just did it, without mentioning where we were expected to spend the night, or who would pay for it. When we arrived at Toronto our ORIGINAL flight to PDX was also delayed. That made it possible to get back onto our original flight, but not without scrambling from the gate, to customer service, then racing back to the gate again. The customer service approved us for boarding our original flight. When we returned to the gate, the agent there questioned our permission to board. After grumbling about how the other agent had left him to do "his" job, he finally agreed to give us seats. We boarded, went to our assigned seats, then were told we couldn't sit there because they were crew seats. The gate guy had given us seats assigned for crew only. We had to dash around to find two seats. A kind passenger agreed to move so that we could sit together. The crew did nothing to help. The plane we were on was terribly old, and very near if not past its expiration date. In the four-plus hour flight, no blankets, no pillows, no food (unless you paid for it), no media, no magazines. Only a 2-beverage service. The seating was so tight that even to smallish people like us had our knees pressed up against the seat in front of us the entire flight. As expected, in the change from one flight to another, our bags didn't arrive with us. It was 10:30 at night. Not one Air Canada agent, either in lost luggage or ticketing was present at PDX. "They go home at 9pm," we were told. So, we were unable to file a missing luggage report. This morning, I tried to go online to report our missing bags (Air Canada calls them "delayed" bags, not missing). It turns out that unless you've got a file number that's issued at the airport, you cannot use the online system; you must call a service number. I waited 34 minutes on the phone for an agent. When she answered, her Indian accent was so strong that I had to ask her to repeat every question several times. I had to repeat my answers to her questions several times. She asked me for an "original booking number" that, according to her, was on my boarding pass. It was not. I checked it repeatedly. When I explained that I could not find it (I had my ticket number, my name, flight numbers, baggage tags...etc.), she promptly hung up on me. I called again. I waited about 25 minutes on the second call. The agent who answered had even more terrible English speaking skills than the first person. Rather than get hung up on again, I politely explained that I could not understand him, and ended the call. Air Canada did text us. It looks as if our bags may arrive by tonight. We'll see. I won't be surprised if they do not. Finally, let me express this; ANY business that does not provide a convenient way to give them direct feedback concerning their customer service is a bad company. First & last Air Canada trip in Sept to Montreal and a 14 day East Coast cruise started with lost (actually 'delayed') luggage. Made the necessary claim at the airport and heard back later that day that my suitcase has been found, would be on another plane arriving that same evening. Provided AC with my hotel location and dock where we'd be boarding our ship the next day. Lost time shopping at local Old Navy and shoe store for some replacement clothes and athletic shoes before catching the city tour that we'd booked so we could experience an important part of the vacation. No suitcase delivered to either the hotel or ship before departure. AC indicated they had our itinerary and would catch up with baggage at upcoming port(s). Daily phone calls to call center in India at considerable expense tracking luggage only resulted in the highest cell bill I've ever had. Halfway through the 2 week trip, we gave up hope and asked AC to ship my baggage home for fear it would be permanently lost if they truly tried to catch up with us. Submitted follow-up letter & formal claim form with original receipts for the $500 quick shopping spree temporary clothing as required by AC upon my return. Months later, without even an acknowledgement of my submitted claim, prompted another call. I was then advised they had no record of my claim for expenses. My suitcase did arrive at my home 3 days before we returned from the trip. My worst vacation flight experience ever. Like others offering AC reviews, recommend you never, ever fly Air Canada. Their service completely lacks followup. Thanks to Holland America for providing Express Laundry service so I could wear the same clean clothes while salvaging an expensive vacation. read more

I travel a lot and my first time to used this airlines, such a disappointment my first flight was delayed for 2 hrs not because of weather but over booked flight. My 2nd flight was a layover in Vancouver the flight crew announced several times before landing that we have to claim our luggages before we go to our next flight, so we did! And came to know after 2 hours that our luggages went straight to our destination already, which cause several of the passengers missing our flight! We ended up staying overnight and missing work the next day, the consolation we got was a hotel and meal voucher and I appreciate that. It was not worth it losing a days of work, the hassle and stress thou of the trip. read more

Gotta say, I am really surprised by all of the bad reviews. I love Air Canada, they have great deals on flights to Calgary, Vancouver, Beijing, Shanghai, Taipei...Quebec...I really love this airline. It's the only one I subscribe to for flight deals. My partner and I bought a package through cheaptickets.com from Portland to Vancouver BC and the outgoing flight was with Air Canada, which I'd never flown before. The problems started immediately when I checked their website and saw that Portland is not on the list of cities that the fly out of, even though they seem to have several flights coming and going to PDX a day. (I found this out at the airport.) I tried to call the airline several times and the wait time was always a minimum of 45 minutes (to 1.2 hours) - who has that much time to sit on the phone on the possible chance that they'll pick up? Of course this was a problem because we couldn't print out our boarding passes the day before; I kept getting an error on the site because it didn't recognize Portland as one of their cities. Ridiculous. Went to the airport and got in line with a ton of other people. Long wait with just a couple of agents working. I asked the agent (who was nice) what was up with the Air Canada website not showing Portland and she said they'd been asking for a year to have it updated but no go. More ridiculousness. Air Canada is one of those cheap-ass outfits that charges you to choose your seat, $18 each on a rickety little plane. So of course, unbeknownst to us, once we're on the plane we see they've switched us so we can't sit together in the seats we paid extra to choose from. The aisle was so crowded I couldn't get to the stewardess to ask about it. Also, I looked at the boarding pass receipt and saw the agent at the gate had given me somebody else's boarding pass (my partner's had his name on it but the mysteriously reassigned seat). I tried again to contact Air Canada but no dice. Just called Alaska Airlines to get the charges removed and they were happy to do so once I explained the situation. Air Canada is a rinky-dink outfit with dizzy gate agents, a terrible, messed-up website, and very little ability to contact them. One star is generous. Never again. read more

Flew to Beijing via PDX-YVR-PEK both ways on Air Canada. Pros: 1st 2 checked bags free. Cons: Food was terrible. Mid-flight snack was a Cup-O-Noodles :( Legroom in economy was on the smaller side. Okay, ignorance is no excuse. We did not know we had to be at the airport one hour before our international flight took off. We were 20 minutes passed that. So we were at the airport at 6:20 am and our flight was to leave at 7 am. We get up to the counter and this nasty woman says " You are too late, you can not board your plane, you have to re-book." So we were stunned and shocked. We stood there kind of in a daze and no one made any effort to assist us. Finally a few minutes afterwards she hands someone an 800 number to give us so we could call to re-book. We go sit down to make the call and a stranger approaches us, someone who witnessed the entire ordea,l and says we were mistreated and that the woman could of helped us. We ended up waiting on the phone for 45 minutes to get help and to re-book. I don't care if this woman was having a bad day. When you are in a customer service postion that is your job to make us feel better. How about a psychology course Air Canada? How to treat people, perhaps how you would like to be treated! read more

I recently moved to portland, I work for a company based in Vancouver BC, flying from SFO i could arrive at the airport 40 mins prior to departure with a mobile boarding pass, no checked bags and glide through. If i didn't check in before leaving the house, no problem, there were several kiosks where I could check in and go. After three times flying air canada out of PDX, I will absolutely be changing my airline to Alaska. I realize that this is not a primary airport for Air Canada, but either get ONE kiosk, or just abandon the airport completely. For SOME reason i can never check in and get a mobile boarding pass for my flights out of PDX, and with NO kiosk, everyone is relegated to standing in line, whether you have checked bags or not. there are ONLY 2 computers for the whole airline, 2 people, and a line OUT THE DOOR. While 12 United kiosks and 12 United staff stand next to them doing exactly nothing. By the way, don't book a flight to Canada on United out of PDX either. It's operated by Air Canada. They don't tell you that until you have to stand in the line. And THEN you have to walk all the way to the last gate, and the last plane on the furthest tarmak, just in case you were already missing it by a hair to begin with. And yes, if you are lest than 60 minutes before your flight, it's your fault you didn't prepare for a 90 minute line. I flew Alaska the other week and they call in and got me on my flight 30 minutes before it was leaving. Thats awesome. Tomorrow will be my fourth flight to Vancouver out of PDX operated by Air Canada. I am dreading it. Getting up at 4am instead of 5am, to ensure I'm not left behind and prepare to rehash this experience with every other passenger in the line. again. All Air Canada had to do was transfer my two bags from my Lufthansa flight to their flight to Portland OR in Vancouver BC. They had more than two hours to do so. One of my bags showed up, the other didn't. I was one of about a half dozen passengers with the same issue. The gal at the airport was friendly and helpful. But I got up the next morning and saw 3 voicemails from 3:30 AM saying my bag was outside my building if I would come down and claim it. Sorry, just back from 11 hours of flying so I wasn't up at that hour. The delivery guy claimed he "didn't see anyone" in the building even though there is a 24 hour concierge at the front desk. Long story short, no one had a clue as to where my bag was. The phone number at PDX went unanswered and the guy that answered on the 1-800 number was completely unhelpful. The bag finally showed up the next night. Very frustrating. read more

My one and only complaint about AC - ROUGE- is that the seats are like concrete ! OMG- was my bum ever sore , by the time we got to Honolulu. ( and the bird was new ! ) . I have flown with Air Canada many times. Each time I had an enjoyable experience. As I booked my first flight with them I looked up the reviews and was a bit skeptical as they appeared to a have poor score. But then I looked at reviews of airlines that I have flown with before and realized they all had poor reviews. In this day and age people just love to gripe, so take what they say and be skeptical of the reviewers as well. As an airline, they get busy and are under a lot of pressure. I had one flight with them get delayed which caused me to miss my connecting flight, they rebooked me and had everything taken care before I even landed. The flights themselves had pretty decent airplane food compared to other airlines I have flown with. The small planes can be a bit cramped, but that seems to be the norm for economy seating. The longer flights were very roomy and accommodating. They have a variety of movies that you can watch from their servers. One plane had monitors that you can use to keep entertained. Even the option to see where the plane was landing flying over. The other longer flight I took did not have this, but you can log in with a laptop and watch the movies that way. As a person that gets nervous when I am in a confined space, I found the outside rows to be perfect on one of the flights. If you are flying with one of their larger planes, be sure to pick a seat ahead of time and look up the plane layout. The three wide rows can be a pain if need to use the restroom from the window seat. I try to show up an extra half hour early then what they suggest to give myself some time for error and this has not failed me yet. The boarding passes I needed were downloadable or you can print them out right there in the airport if you need which is nice for last minute changes. One thing to note is that they printed the airline as "Lufthansa" on my confirmation email which really threw me off. I thought I was on a different airline for that flight and was wandering around. Apparently is what they call themselves from other airports. So just know if you see "Lufthansa" on your ticket, just go to the Air Canada area. If you are looking for a nice affordable airline I highly recommend Air Canada. Just have your stuff ready and be early to have a good experience. read more

Unbelievable and incompetent. I flew from Toronto to Portland via Calgary 8/22/15. Toronto neglected to give me a seat assignment resulting in my bag missing the flight. Calgary leg ticket had no Zone assignment and the security inCalgary neglected to stamp my boarding pass for clearance causing me to almost miss that flight. Filed a claim at PDX upon arrival. Called Sunday for update and they had no record of claim. Filed another claim Sunday. It is now Sunday evening and still no word on my luggage. I have flown for 40+ years and have NEVER dealt with such incompetent people. read more

Then the rebooking was a total mess due to the fact the Canadian gov. keeps competition out. There are only a couple domestic carriers so no chance to get another flight on short notice. Really, Air Canada? REALLY? Our experiences this past weekend were horrendous. Flying from Athens, Greece, to Toronto was absolutely nothing like we were guaranteed. For being a so called "luxury" aircraft the Rouge was anything but. The seats were so cramped, that the person's knees behind me were jammed into my back for the entire 11 hours of air travel. When the person in front of my dad reclined their seat, he lost so much room that he couldn't comfortably read a magazine anymore. Our legs were cramping and going numb, and this plane felt like it was from the first generation. It was absolutely nothing like we were guaranteed, and nothing like we paid for. The in-flight entertainment was a joke. We were completely unaware that an app needed to be installed in order to take advantage of the internet and video watching. We spent the entire flight staring at the back of the seat in front of us, and playing solitaire on our phones. While we did get beverages and food quite often, that did not make up for the incredible discomfort that the rest of the journey included. Once we landed in Toronto, we hopped on another Air Canada flight to San Francisco. This flight was a little better in that there was leg room. There was in-flight entertainment in the seat-backs. Yay! Oh, but the earphones that are normally provided for free, weren't free. We'll dangle the entertainment carrot in front of you, but you can't touch! I luckily had headphones with me, and after browsing the movies selection for 30 seconds, I was done. Do I want to watch Season 4, Episode 2 of Battlestar Galactica, or Jurassic Park 2? Or maybe Season 2, Episode 10 of Revenge? Want episode 1-9, sorry, they don't have it. I know, I know, first world problems here. BUT, when you pay a butt load of money for something, you better get what you paid for. Our puddle jumpers in Greece were of higher class and luxury than Air Canada provided, and they could barely even hold our luggage. United to Portland from SF was a breeze, because it was United and not its partner. My suggestion, avoid Air Canada as best you can, especially for the long-haul flights. read more

I had the worst travel day I've ever had on Air Canada in 35 some odd years of traveling. They really deserve zero stars however Yelp doesn't give that as an option. It started when I checked in at the desk in Nice, France. I asked the check-in agent if I needed to recheck my bags once I arrived in Montreal. She clearly said "no" and pointed to the label she had put on my bag handle showing all three airport abbreviations (Montreal, Vancouver and Portland). We were late leaving Nice and late arriving to Montreal. I requested a wheelchair in both Montreal and Vancouver. During the flight to Montreal I asked the flight attendant if I needed to fill out both Canadian and US Customs forms since my final destination was Portland. She said no and gave me a US Customs form to fill out. When we got to Montreal the wheelchair did not show up forcing me to walk VERY painfully (I'm disabled) a very long way. I followed the signs and they led to a huge customs hall, one of the biggest I've ever seen. I approached an Air Canada agent because I was angry about the wheelchair not showing up. She just pointed to a far corner of the hall. I told her they aren't doing any good there, that I had asked for a wheelchair, that none had shown up. When I got through the line to customs the Canadian agent said I did in fact need to fill out the Canadian customs forms (not what the flight attendant had said). So I had to go back in line, fill out the forms and approach again. Because the flight was late there were only minutes before my connecting flight. After clearing customs I asked another Air Canada agent about my bag. She said if I don't want to be stuck here I had to hurry and catch my next flight and that I was in fact required to recheck my bag. However because of flight delays, no wheelchair, customs issues there was no time for me to do so. I was exasperated and very upset. On the flight from Montreal to Vancouver I tried to write out and document what had happened. The wheelchair was again a no-show. I found an Air Canada desk, tried to complain, explain my situation, etc ... Me traveling without the bag had caused additional problems with US customs (pre-screening) in Vancouver. They FINALLY had a cart to help me through the airport to help me get across to US Customs. At US Customs I literally got stuck about 3 times because of the ineptitude of Air Canada employees not communicating my baggage situation and/or not getting the paperwork down to the final customs area. THEY EVEN GOT MY CANE STUCK IN THE X-RAY MACHINE. When I finally cleared the last part of customs there was no wheelchair (no surprise). I had to run very painfully as they were announcing last call for my flight to Portland. My bag did not make it to Portland which caused HUGE problems as many of my meds were in there. I had some meds in my carry on, not a lot. The bag finally arrived about 4 days later looking as beat up as can be. I have repeatedly complained to Air Canada about what happened that day but all they were willing to do was offer me a tiny discount on a future flight. WHY after all I went through would they ever think I would want to fly with Air Canada again? read more

Problem with ticket scanner didn't work. Flight helper from other airline had to help them and said to us in private that they "suck" as an airline and she helps alot, got on plane last because of ticket issue, planes tv in my seat didn't work and sound was garbled and sounded like bubbles. Tried to fly from PDX to Vancouver, BC, twice! Yes tried to because both times the flight was cancelled due to mechanical issues. Had to get up at 4am with the kids both times hoping that this time they will fly, but they did not. I know that things happen and the most important thing is for the flight to arrive safely, but I am giving one star for the poor customer service. No one told us what was going on or when the plane would be able to fly. And since the flight was a joint United Airlines flight, the Air Canada people kept saying they could not help since they did not 'own' the flight, and somehow there were no other flights going to Vancouver? Whatever. PDX does not seem to have a dedicated Air Canada booth or ticket area, and the few Air Canada employees were very standoffish. I finally left the airport after 5 hours of waiting and being told by AC 'just one more hour'. The next day I saw some of the same passengers who told me that they played that game for more than 9 hours before being told the flight was cancelled. That next day at least they cancelled the flight after 2 hours. This time I was told there was another flight to Vancouver later in the day which I took. AC actually tried to talk me out of it probably because they would be forced to pay for a hotel in Vancouver due to my flight out of Vancouver would have already left. This is the second time I had a bad experience with AC and it will be the last. read more

My husband and I took Air Canada on the last leg of a long international trip. One of our two checked bags did not arrive and we filled out a missing baggage report while standing by the carousel. That was 10 days ago and the baggage still has not arrived. I have made several calls to Air Canada, and was on the phone about 45 minutes one day and about 30 minutes another day. Then when talking to the people on the line they kept asking me the same questions over and over. I don't mind repeating 2-3 times, but when it is about 10 times for the same question, it rather shakes my confidence. As it turns out, it seems that the person who filled out the Air Canada missing baggage report did not put on a crucial number. Air Canada says to ask the airport for the number--or to drive the 4 hours there to fill out another report, and the airport says that to have Air Canada get the number. Air Canada has their own set of rules when it comes to service. Most Airlines have a cut off of 30 minutes from departure. Air Canada has a 60 minute cut off that is NOT disclosed on their online ticket purchase documentation. My wife had terminal cancer and we arrived 50 minutes prior to departure. We were rudely told that we had missed our flight and were told that our money would NOT be refunded. We talked to two different reservations personnel in Montreal who were apathetic and the male even hung up on me. Their solution was to to charge an additional $700 to put us on the next flight after we had already paid in FULL. My wife was not feeling well, was on chemo and terminally ill they took none of these facts into consideration. These guys are jerks, do not have to compete or be good to their customers because they are owned by the Canadian Government. I will never fly or recommend Air Canada to anyone ever again. read more
