Gave us an estimate for new duct work. The day before installation I asked what permits we would need. He angrily berated me for asking for a permit. (City of Roseville requires permits on home improvements such as these and if I got caught doing it without one - I could face a BIG fine). He told me that all the contractors that get permits are crappy contractors and that he would do a better job than any of them. I told him I still wanted to get the permits and he angrily agreed. This put off my job by a week but a permit costs NOTHING compared to a fine, or a bad duct work job that is no good and needs to be replaced. Plus - with a permit you get an inspector that comes out and makes SURE that they did a proper job. Who knows what I would have got without that permit. Mike also is not reliable - he shows up late kept giving me long excuses that included a lot of personal details of his life that he should not be discussing with a client. The inspector said the work was "ok". If you use him make sure you get a permit. Minimal cost and well worth it. UPDATE - Mike do not call me again. Your response is FULL of LIES. My husband, an attorney, was on the speaker phone when you were chewing me out for asking for a permit. I waited a year to post this review because I was afraid of you. You were angry when I asked why you were not going to get a permit. You told me repeatedly I didn't need one. I knew we would be moving out of the house soon and did not want you bothering us after I left an honest review on Yelp. Do I need to warn the new tenants about you? Do not call me again. If you try to retaliate I will call the police. People have a right to know who they are dealing with. read more

I'm going to give Mike and Airsmiths five stars simply because they are not out to make a fast buck and gave me some great advice. We just purchased a house built in 1960. We know that it needs new insulation and windows. But Mike said, "Listen, don't do anything now. Go through a couple seasons and see what your energy bills are. We found Airsmiths on the SMUD website among contractors who can do the SMUD Home Performance program. February of this year 2013 I interviewed and got bids from 5 contractors from that SMUD website. I was impressed with Michael Smith's breadth of knowledge and enthusiasm. We chose to go with the Home Performance Program because we wanted to do the job right and because it included SMUD and PG&E rebates. We have a challenging attic layout because of the variety of vaulted ceilings in the home. Airsmiths removed as much insulation as was possible, then sealed air gaps. They replaced the HVAC unit with an Energy Star rated one, replaced the ductwork, and added a lot insulation. We also requested installation of a whole house fan, additional roof vents, and a radiant barrier. The whole project went smoothly. Each day the lead technician, Casey would update me on the progress of the work. This crew loves their work! They are thorough, meticulous, and knowledgable. I appreciated their attention to detail including color matching and painting the new roof vents and cleaning up after each day's work. Everything tested out according to specifications and we are very happy to have a new and dependable unit. I simply have to give these guys FIVE STARS! read more

We had a very small gas leak near the inlet pipe to our gas-powered fireplace and PG&E came out to confirm it. But because they suspected that gas might have accumulated in between the wall next to the fireplace, they had to turn our gas supply off. We contacted Airsmiths because my sister had used them for a gas piping re-route project. We were expecting this problem to be quite costly because we thought the leak might involve tearing down some wall in the house. PG&E also suggested that the plumber or contractor would need to pump in 15 PSI of air and cap off the various gas line end point to diagnose the leakage point. However, when Mike (the owner) from Airsmiths arrived at our house, he explained that we should start with a simpler technique to try to isolate the leakage point instead of going straight to the method that PG&E suggested. Surely enough, he found the problem without needing to use the overkilled method. He then took take care of the problem for us at a very reasonable rate. For our family, that's 2 out of 2 (my sister's project and our gas leak problem) excellent services provided by them. We would definitely use them again and highly recommend Airsmiths. read more

We bought our house a few months ago and got hooked up with an awesome program called EEM- energy efficient mortgage. Basically loan you money to make energy efficient upgrades to your home- tack it on to your home loan with the same interest rate. Our home was built in '64 and had original windows- we got those taken care of. Next was the insulation of the walls, we had Airsmiths come out in the 2nd of June. I spent hours moving all furniture away from the walls, they were here for a few hours on the 2nd until something broke in their truck and they had to stop. They said they'd be back soon, maybe Monday.. this was annoying because I rearranged my schedule to have a free day for them to come out and do this. So, they leave and I realize my air conditioner isn't blowing cold air at all. After multiple calls to the company they told us that they never tuned the breaker back on- by this point my house had reached 91 degrees.. I have 2 young children and 3 dogs. Once again, annoying. So I spent another hour or so moving all of our furniture back. Monday morning comes and I start rearranging all of the furniture back off of the walls again, the guys came, worked from about 8am to 5pm. Moved all of the furniture back for what I hoped was the last time.... WRONG. so a few days later I noticed that they forgot to patch a hole in the wall, I start looking over the patch work and realize what a terrible job they had done. Then I notice that different screws are popping out of the exterior walls.. they over-filled my walls with the insulation. I made MULTIPLE calls to the company, it took about 5 tries to finally get a call back from the owner. We started messaging back and fourth and I was told that he was way too busy to help me right now, that maybe he'd be able to touch base with me in the next week and a half. All of the annoyance I was feeling previously had progressed to ANGER. what do you mean, we paid a lot of money to have this done and I expect it to be done correctly. Our house got a brand new paint job before we bought it. (We were renting this house before we decided to purchase it- so I know it was painted a month prior to us owning it) I had specifically stated I didn't want any holes drilled in the outside of my house, THEY DID IT ANYWAYS! so many different let downs from this one experience. An experience that was supposed to be exciting...it is now July 21st about 6 weeks since they first came out and nothing has been fixed. My walls have cracked gross looking patching, there are screws poking out, and there's a hole that hasn't been patched at all. I haven't heard from the owner in about a month now. I have never been so disappointed in a company. I have worked in customer service for 10+ years and this is absolutely not how it's done. The office that runs the EEM program is now trying to find some type of sub contractor that will come finish the job. I just want to paint the inside of my house! Pull it together, Airsmiths. I recently had a major issue with my Daikin VRV III system where two compressors failed and a leak was found in the refrigerant lines. This is a high-class system that was installed by another company a few years ago. Mike checked it out, got the new compressor (under warranty), found the leak in the system, changed out the line-set, recharged the system and made sure it was fully functional and working again. I first called them to set an appointment. The woman who answered took my name and number and said someone would call me the next day, as it was after 4 pm. I never received a call back, so about a week later I called again. This time they set an appointment day and time. I took off a few hours of work as the window of time was 7:30-9:30 am. At 10:00 am I called to find out where the tech was. A different woman answered and said I was not on the schedule. I was rather upset and told them I would make another appointment but it would have to be on the weekend, as I was not taking any more time off work. An appointment was set for 2 weeks on a Saturday. The tech showed up on time and said he would give me an estimate later the next week. That was 5 weeks ago. I'm not going to chase down a company. They already had 2 strikes against them. The Airsmiths are life savers!! My wife and I had experienced in 2010 a sudden loss of heat in January and they road into the rescue. Turns out our duct work and whole system needed to be replaced as it was 15-20 years old and out heating/electricity bills were through the roof with any severe weather. Airsmiths installed a new Fujitsu heating and cooling system in our old house, and they did very good work. It was a challenging job installing brand-new multi-zone heat pump technology in an old house with tight space constraints, but Mike Smith and his crew worked overtime to get it done. I especially appreciated their attention to energy efficiency and performance details, making sure that all the ducts were properly sealed and that the system was as quiet as possible. Update 6/24/17: I had good luck with them on repairs, but Mike was a complete flake when I asked him about a year ago to bid on a new HVAC system for my house (he would have gotten the job if he had put something, anything, together, but he never got anything to me despite two verbal confirmations). Second bidder very happy to have me write them a big check. Then when I googled my address, I saw that he had made up a phony review, using my name and address from a positive Angie's List review I had done (no good deed will go unpunished!). So they went from flakey to creepy. I wouldn't touch these losers with a 10-foot pole after these two negative experiences in a row. Disappointing, because they had done good repair work. My tenants called Tuesday night and stated the A/c was not working properly. I called around to a couple places and no one could get me in for a few days. A friend of mine recommended Airsmiths. I called first thing Weds morning and explained my situation and they were able to come out that day. Michael showed up on time and immediately got to work. To be honest I was expecting to have to buy a new unit as I have had some issues with this one in the past. Michael showed me that the airflow in the house was being lost due to the coils being dirty causing the unit to ice over and explained he would just need to clean them up and we would be good to go. Micheal cleaned the coils and checked out the entire system while he was there. Their prices are reasonable but most importantly they are honest. I have dealt with a lot of companies over the years and its hard to find a place that will do the necessary repair rather then trying to push a new system on you. My Tenants called later that night and stated the house was an Ice Box and the A/c was working great. Airsmiths has since serviced the A/c at my other rental. I called Airsmiths to do an air conditioner repair job. I knew of them previously, as they had been referred to me to do good energy efficiency performance improvements. However, for this repair job they sent out a tech guy to check the AC, which was working intermittently, mostly not working at all. It was a heat spell. $190 later he had made a trip to the house, replaced something on the outside compressor unit. The AC was still only working intermittently, but didn't work at all for 3 days. He said the next step was a new compressor. YIKES! I called the office and complained that he was nickel and diming me, with no results, and he hadn't even set foot in the house to check the indoor unit! He was sent out one more time, with the same results, no improvements. I called my old AC installer folks (NOT Airsmiths), and they came to the house. After testing the refrigerant line and checking the unit inside, they found a mylar balloon wrapped around the fan unit, and the refrigerant expansion valve not working. For only slightly more than I paid to Airsmiths, the unit is fixed and humming along. DO NOT CALL THESE FOLKS FOR BASIC AC REPAIRS. YOU WILL END UP WITH A WHOLE NEW UNIT FOR A BUNCH OF MONEY, which probably will not even fix the problem! I would have been better off throwing $190 in the garbage can!!! read more

During our recent heatwave, my upstairs air conditioner quit. I called three air conditioning companies and received bids to replace the unit. I also called Airsmiths and ask for an estimate to replace the unit. Michael the owner came out and gave me an estimate which was comperable to the others ($2,000), but he said, the unit wasn't that old and he could easily repair it for less than $500. I told him great and he replaced a part and recharged the system and it works great. The repair cost was $300. Michael saved me $1,700. I am still in shock. I would definately recommend Airsmith to anyone who need Airconditioning work done. He could have easily have given me the bid to replace the system, but is honest and went for a less expensive repair for me and a less profitable repair for him. He is a good person. read more

My wife and I received a whole house performance diagnostic session and full energy efficiency and comfort upgrade in 2006. At the time, Mike and his crew were the only ones in the Sacramento area trained to do this kind of work. Airsmiths did a fantastic job, and our house is so much more comfortable and the new heating and cooling system is very quiet. No more hot and cold rooms, rapid cycling of the AC and furnace, and funky smell in a particular closet where air was seeping in from somewhere we don't want to know. Airsmiths guaranteed that no room would be more than 3 degrees different than any other, which I thought was impossible. But I actually measured the temp in every room, and it was true! Before the upstairs was 7 degrees warmer than downstairs. We (my brother and myself) are in the process of remodeling a home and are on a tight budget and time. Mike Smith president of Airsmiths came by asking for work and we talked in person where he said he could do the job for $1200, so we took that into consideration and later on the phone after some negotiating came up with a price of $1000 to reinstall our duct work for our air conditioner and heater systems. He was suppose to begin work on a Tuesday as we wanted to get the work inspected later that week. So I was out all weekend pouring the concrete pads that are needed for the units to sit on. He calls Monday and says he wont be able to make it Tue so we say ok no problem, next day same thing, so its now Thursday and he promised to start Friday and be finished by Sat. after noon as he promised us its only a two day job. We have also had to push back our schedule of inspection for another week and have many other guys waiting to do jobs that are held up by getting this work inspected. Mike comes by Thur. afternoon to do a walk through of the work and then says he is gonna need a minimum of $1500 to do this job. A little shocked as we verbally agreed over the phone of a price of $1000. After talking it through and trying to come up with an agreement, we said we would pay the first price he quoted us which was $1200 as we would like to get the work done and thought he and his company were a quality group. After we stated "this is not a good way to do business and burn bridges" He says "sorry guys gonna have to burn that bridge and walks out". So in all we waited three days for Mike to come around and were accepting of the tardiness and were willing to work with it. But to come ask for more money and have no interest in meeting half way after lack of good business skills is completely and utterly unacceptable. I have done business in many sectors from restaurants, to home remodel and have never seen such behavior. To top it off when he said he was starting Friday, he explained he had to be done Sat. evening as it was his daughters birthday Sunday and I replied I agree I would not want you to work on your daughters birthday and told him if it wasn't done Sat. we could finish up Monday and get the inspection Tue. I am in complete ah after bending over backwards to be accommodating to be totally mistreated. I want to report their behavior, as I do not want any other homeowner, remodeler, and contractor to have to go through what I just did. Unwanted stress by a bad company should not be in business.
