AJ's Home Cooking is a comforting, no frills restaurant that is affordable and delicious! Lots of different options and I love that everything is always fresh and warm. It's the best way to get a taste of southern food. The head chef has been working for 17 years at AJ's after he fell in love with southern cuisine. Ambiance is very welcoming and casual, you will see the same people come often, so they definitely have regular customers! Love to see that. On top of that, they rotate the menu daily! I went on a Saturday and they had chicken fried steak, collard greens, candied yams, and the most delicious squash and cabbage I've ever had. We weren't sure where to eat and someone suggested this location. We hadn't been here before, but others in our party had. It definitely has a country feel. The staff are extremely nice and checked on us often. The food was good and there was a good variery - even our kids were happy and could find plenty to eat. Only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5, sometimes I just wanna run by and grab a box of food to take home because I don't feel like sitting there eating. Being there, I felt like I was at a family party, getting my plate to fill up. All the food was great. I was in the area visiting for 4 days and I ate here 3 times. We have been going to A.J.'s for years on Friday nights. The food is good and the personnel are friendly and helpful. Recently the prices have jumped from $14 each to $20 each which will affect the number of times we can visit this place in the future. I been wanting to try this place out for some time and finally got to try this place out. I was informed that this was soul/country buffet. This place was located off Haynes Bridge Road in a private shopping center. There is plenty of parking spots here. I got here around 11:30am on a Tuesday and it was already jumping off with a small crowd. I was seated right away. There is a very good assortment of foods here from fried chicken, country fried steak, biscuits, corn, mac/cheese, mashed potatoes, coleslaw, and a huge salad bar. I was very impressed by the taste and freshness of the food here. The highlights were the fried chicken as it was super crispy and temperature was just right. The fried chicken was probably the best I have tasted in a while. It was on point. The country fried steak with the white gravy was out of this world. I couldn't believe on how good it tasted. The salmon cakes weren't half bad as well. I enjoyed the fried gizzards and the chicken pot pie. I didn't try the salad bar as I still had to go back to work and didn't want to fall asleep from eating too much. The service was awesome here as our waitress kept refilling our drinks. I can't wait to come back here with some family and coworkers/friends as this place was amazing. They have terrific home cooking. Any day you want to go there. They're closed Sunday but the other 6 days of the week it's my favorite place to go. I haven't been in a few years because I've been practicing Keto but went back today and my review doesn't change. They've renovated the place to where it's very bright and cheery. The salad bar was of more interest to me today and I was very satisfied with it. I did give in and have some fried catfish and cheese grits and man was that stuff good. I go for the fried chicken livers, something I wouldn't make it home. They only have those on Tuesday and Thursday, but white gravy only on Tuesdays so that's the day I go. Fried chicken is very good and you can get dark and light meat. Salad bar and dressings are pretty good. Price covers a tea and dessert, including frozen options. This is a very family friendly place with a welcoming, hospitable waitstaff. It's a low key casual buffet style dining experience. And the price is very reasonable. I spent about 60$ before gratuity for 4 adults and 2 kids. The buffet itself appears pretty small but there are quite a few options including a soup and salad bar a few desserts and a pretty varied variety of hot foods. And based off of how often the staff was coming in and out of the kitchen, they change the food out pretty frequently instead of waiting for a pan to sit out and get to the bare bottom. They also change specials from day to day. So it's not always the same dishes every night. Unfortunately, I found the foods they offered to be overly salty or cloyingly sweet. I tried their beef tips, mashed potatoes with brown gravy, mac and cheese, collards, chicken and dressing, beef soup, and sweet corn. While it was all palatable, I became agonizingly parched on the drive home and got a pretty bad headache from all the salt I had just consumed. I was greeted warmly by Morris who owns the place and was immediately shown to my table with silverware and asked what I'd like to drink. I sat in my booth and was quickly met by my server Venus who was attentive and friendly. Once you're seated, you're good to go straight to the buffet. You'll see lots of your familiar southern comfort foods: fried chicken, collards, rice and gravy, corn bread and trust me, I came to chow down. I got the fried chicken (only thighs available, folks) fried catfish, collard greens, green bean casserole, pork ribs, black eyed peas, Mac and cheese, green beans, cabbage, green beans, a salad, and some pasta salad as well. Albeit the food didn't really blow me away, but it was well-seasoned and the taste was nostalgic. The fried catfish was my favorite and they have plenty of desserts to choose from! I've had better southern food for sure, but when you stop by AJ's you're coming for the warm, family-friendly environment and to fill your belly! It IS AYCE after all and that is my favorite kind of restaurant. I came around 5 PM on a Friday and it was pretty quiet but around 6 PM this place is jumping! It's definitely a senior-heavy crowd and I guess this is their little secret! The food was 3.5/5 but I'm bumping up to 4 stars because I really enjoyed the energy of this place. You can't really find a place like this in north Atlanta anymore which is a shame, but I definitely see myself becoming a regular diner here. We have to keep the southern culture alive and I believe it thrives most fervently through our good food. And I will always support a locally owned small business when I can, so this will definitely be a regular spot for me. Went to AJ's today for the first time. I was pumped to find a new country buffet near work and looked forward to wing Wednesday ever since I heard about it. Meats and sides were everything you'd expect; fried chicken, mashed potatoes, Salisbury steak and gravy, Lima beans, dressing, collards, green beans, cheese grits, catfish, potato salad. The one exception is something I'm still trying to wrap my head around - the mac and cheese was an absolute mess. The cheese was like you found a ten year old can of nacho cheese in the back of the storage room of concession stand and baked it with some elbow pasta. I really don't get it. Still processing how it could be so bad when everything else was great. For my third plate I got more mac from a fresh tray but was still disappointed.
