This place is incredible. It's relatively difficult to find good sandwiches on the west coast and I can't believe I didn't discover this place sooner. The two most important qualities of a sandwich place to me are 1) the care they put into each sandwich and 2) the value. Holy cow do they hit it out of the park on each. On this alone I'd be hooked but they are also just so nice and pleasant to interact with. Screw the hipster places charging $20+ for a bougie organic shee shee sandwich. This place is where it's at. Had it with mayo and spicy mustard and added pickles! When it arrived it was still warm, bread was soft on the inside with a light crunch on the outside. Always been curious about this sandwich shack by the highway, since it looked both shady and intriguing at the same time (...like so much of SoMa). Turns out to be a magnet for people who want an indulgently meaty lunch. So filling and so delicious! Tony's Hot Pastrami: Totally worth the spike in cholesterol and blood pressure! I'm big on texture so I fell in love with their technique. Ribbon thin slices of pastrami that are partially crisped on the griddle. It's bacon-esqe and so yummy. The generous gooey cheese on top adds some nice moisture. And love the seeded roll that was toasted perfectly so it also had some chewy bread parts underneath. The tuna melt sandwich was sumptuous and filling! The French roll was perfectly toasted with a crispy buttery outside and chewy inside. The tuna salad was well balanced texture and flavor between fish, fat (mayo), and refreshing celery & tomatoes. The pepper and mustard balances out the grease. Intense blue building that I've passed time after time exiting the freeway. Although at a janky location, the inside is bright and spacious. I was surprised by the consistently long line throughout lunch time. Die's Decadence: Warm turkey with Swiss cheese, avocado, mushroom, sprout, lettuce, tomato and bell peppers served on my choice of three-seed roll. Lots of veggie and a good amount of turkey. The roll was absolutely delicious. Supreme crunchiness and toasty flavor from the seeds. Each ingredient was present in every bite. Indulgent yet without an ounce of guilt. My test of a sandwich is in the ability to hold its shape and texture after a few hours. I usually save half of my sandwich for later, so it's important that it still tastes good. The Die's Decadence surpassed the test. I believe the three-seed roll played in huge part in this. After 5 hours, the veggies sweated a bit and no longer warm. But the roll was still ever so crunchy. I go for the $4.15 T.B.'s B.L.T. (pictured), and it's a damn hearty sandwich for the money. I like the equally cheap Poor Sub, which has slices of mortadella, bologna, salami and American cheese on a sourdough roll with lettuce and tomatoes. Geez, I have to come back for Omar's 3-Egg Omelette for just $2.53. So don't let me forget my wife-beater shirt, dude...and oh, I need to belch next time. Having passed by AK subs countless times while riding the 47 and seeing the reviews and pictures of their fantastic looking sandwiches, I decided to make this my first stop on a week dedicated to finding great sandwiches in SF. I kept it simple on this visit and went with the popular Tony's pastrami sandwich which is nothing more than a toasted roll, some mustard and what I can only describe as a mountain of pastrami. This sandwich is literally bigger than your face. The meat here is the star of the show and is almost bacon-like in texture at some points. Don't come here expecting the new york deli style with thick cuts because this is the exact opposite of that and is sliced very thin. Despite that, it is very moist and tender on the inside while the edges of the strips contrast nicely with the rest because they are crisp, thin and peppery. I devoured this sandwich and loved every bit of it. Hopefully I will be able to try the meatball sandwich at some point as well as some of their other items but I don't know if I will ever be able to resist getting this sandwich when I come here. Overall, AK subs delivered an amazing sandwich at a good price in a great location. I have to start by saying it was the best pastrami sandwich I have ever had! It's so thinly sliced and none of it was chewy. None of that bubble gum, it was like high-end sushi melt in your mouth.
