Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them? In a gyro at Al's! Al's occupies the aspirational space where tasty, local, competitively priced, great customer service, and "worth visiting" combine to put out a quality product. I had no idea where to park and I was really not in the mood for (or able to afford) a parking ticket today. I spent 15 minutes circling the block trying to figure out where was good and where was no bueno to park. Signs on the walls were specific about parking for the Next Door ONLY and one even said "No Al's Parking." I almost gave up and went home but someone pulled out from their street-side parking on Waugh so I slid right on in. After talking with the guy inside, apparently parking is less of a hassle than that for future reference. Especially if you are here for a late lunch, and not going to spend hours inside Rudz anyway. With that being said, confirm parking eligibility because the idiot tax cost of these tickets are quite high. With a crowd of seven guys just killing time standing around in the restaurant area it seemed like a disordered chaos. Even worse I felt almost entirely out of place. There was the generic cute hipster sitting alone in the back thinkin' about the next tattoo/band you have never heard of, and then the rest were day laborers that of course were gruffer and more hardened in life than I. I was almost ready to go back to Niko Niko's and wait there out of some misguided penitence for bland but overpriced nouveau riche status sustenance. But the guy behind the register spotted me and came on over to take my order. Patience is a good idea here - sometimes the best things in life require a bit of a wait. The guy was super polite and very friendly. I was not expecting that much nicety, but it sure was appreciated amidst the overwhelming negativity and awfulness that seems to have gathered in dark clouds lately in both my professional and personal lives. A gyro sandwich with fries and a falafel sandwich without fries clocks in just under $15. You take the ticket from the restaurant area back to the cash register in the quick stop part of the store, pay, and your wait will be about five minutes for your food. The order of fries was a little smaller than I had been expecting, it is definitely a "side" as compared to Little Big's basically trashbag size "side" of fries where they made it rain, hail, and F-5 tornado with their amount of fries. With that being said, the fries were delightfully seasoned and there were no lame loser "fail" fries included in the bouquet of salty deliciousness. They were all the good, thick, pleasant sort of fries you can sink into ketchup and appreciate. My to-go order had one small ketchup tub, but I was headed home to where the spicy Whataburger ketchup from HEB resides. If you are a serious ketchup person and are heading back to work or whatever, far from the good-good ketchup, definitely let the girl preparing the to-go bag know that you need some extra ketchup. The gyro is mostly meat, stuffed completely full indeed unlike some time at Niko's where there is so much pita left over you can tie it off and use it again and again and again. The tomato and onion are not very well represented proportionally, so if you are a meathead, then you can feel like you definitely got your money's worth getting more meat than filler vegs. The meat is delightful, tender, and not too heavily seasoned or salty. It speaks for itself. The pita is very, very spongy and much thicker than usual. There are no "Chipotle tears" under the weight of the meat, unlike what inevitably happens every time with a Chipotle burrito where the burrito artist tempted God so much that divine retribution demanded a sizable tear through the length of your once beautiful burrito, preferably all over your khaki pants while you are driving. The gyro was intact from start to finish, nice. This is a meal you can trust to not ruin clothes, should you need to take your meal more mobile out on the low highway. Al's is a hidden gem. I wish I had visited sooner. Their gyro game is hella strong. Bring an appetite (for drunkfood after Rudz or just regular food) and come appreciate how this is the best gyro in town, bar none. read more

If you're looking for fast food, pass on the Mickey D's and come to Al's. The food here is prepared to order but is super fast. Everything comes out fresh and hot, and the serving size is huge! We picked up a gyro platter ($9) before a long drive, and it smelled so good, I couldn't resist eating it immediately after getting back into the car. They packed it up very nicely so it's easily transportable and not too messy. The gyro platter came with abundant gyro meat crisped up on the grill with some tomatoes and onions, served over a bed of rice. There's also hummus and cucumber/tomato salad on the side, along with a grilled (storebought) pita bread, tzatziki sauce, and a cup of lentil soup! So much food. Everything was really flavorful. The gyro meat was delicious but rather oily and heavy. It was cut into big chunks instead of thin slivers, which the bf loved. The cucumber tomato salad was very tart but still good, and the hummus was great. For some reason, I really liked the grilled tomatoes that came with the gyro meat :P. First time coming here was one late night after the bars, when someone had a craving for YEEEEROS. The drive was a bit hazy for me so it was hard to place this location in my mind. I just remember it being the greatest thing I've eaten in my life. Fast forward a few days, and that gyro was still on my mind, minus the hyperbole. Took me a while to find the place, but I finally located it in a sleepy old neighborhood around the Waugh split. This place has the most random things for sale. I saw racks of clothes, sinister looking energy drinks, various types of wacky tobaccy, beef jerky, and of course, a little grill serving up a lot more than I remembered. Raw, marinating meat for sale by the pound as well. I saw a huge stack of shoes in one back closet. "A new thing we're doing" says the cashier. Man these gyros are good. So succulent, greasy, and seasoned perfectly. They lopped off some slices from that spin-y thing and tossed it on the grill for a good sear. Throw some tzatziki sause on it and you're all set. (5/5) Combo plate: same thing as the gyro plate but with chicken and beef instead. Both were pretty dry.... But the sauces help and make it good. OH AL. You continue to deliver delicious food at reasonable prices during obscenely long hours. I wanted to write a review update because, well, I ate A LOT of things here over the years and want to chronicle them for posterity's sake. 0. Not a food item, but a technological boon. You can now order ahead through the Yelp app/website! This is definitely advisable during the dinner rush, which I finally experienced for the first time around 7-8pm on a weekend. I've always been on weekday lunches and the wait for my food was usually no more than 15 min, but this particular Sunday night, all of Montrose showed up for some street gyros and I waited about 40 min for my food. I had placed my order via the Yelp app at 7:40pm, got there at 7:45pm and didn't receive my food until about 8:10pm due to a crazy number of people ordering in person and online at the same time. The app was great in that it did tell me my estimated pick up time would be around 8:05pm but I showed up early anyway hoping it was just a suggestion. So, lesson learned, place an order ahead and really, don't show up until the time it says it'll be ready. The guys behind the counter were working like crazy but were still really polite and friendly :) 1. The gyro continues to be my favorite food item. I feel like the meat is getting juicier and that the portion size is going up. I usually eat half and wrap up the other half for later. And always, get more sauce! I have taken many friends here, and every single time I order the gyro, my friends order something else, and my friends have serious food envy. That's how I know it's the best thing on the menu...constant food envy. 2. The lentil soup. THE LENTIL SOUP. Who would have thought pureed beans could taste so freaking good? I am not a huge soup person really (it's so much less portable than solid food...and once I spilled a container of it inside my purse, so I have a grudge against soup), but every single time I come to Al's I always get a large lentil soup. The flavor is incredible - hearty, slightly tart, fragranced with cumin and other delicious spices...ahhh, soup. 3. The hummus. I love this hummus! It's lemony and comes with little pickled things. 4. The plates. I typically order a la cart and mix and match things to make 2 meals out of a few orders, but I recently sampled a "plate" option and was very pleasantly surprised to find it came with lots of variety! Read the reviews on yelp and headed out to try this place right away! Food: I can safely say one of the best, if not the best, Gyro in town. The meat is seasoned and cooked to perfection. The pita bread is on the bulkier side but it melts in your mouth soft. The sandwich also includes slightly grilled onions and tomatoes. You get tzatziki on the side, so you can add to taste. Dont be fooled by size, this sandwich is loaded. A friend also tried the Falafel and said it reminds him of home (the Middle East). It was the most authentic Falafel he's had abroad yet. After studying at Campesino's in Montrose, stopped at Al's to pick up dinner. My fellow elite friend took me here, because she loves the good food and quick service. She placed her order online through Yelp so that it was ready for pick up which I thought was cool! My eyes have been opened. Sunday dinner time was pretty hectic- my friend said this was the busiest she's seen it. She got the gyro and lentil soup and I ordered the kabob platter because I was craving rice. Both took 10-15min wait as there was a line of people who had also just ordered. It was okay though because the convenience store has aisles of random, eclectic things you can browse as well as few tables to sit at while you wait for your food. My kabob platter was great- good bang for the buck. It comes with so much food, you can easily split it into 2 meals. I liked the chicken better than the beef kabob. The rice was great and the grilled veggies was my favorite. It also comes with hummus too which I enjoyed! The sauce I got was not as good- it was a weird mix of ranch and something else. It didnt' quite fit with my meal so I discarded it. I tried a bit of my friend's gyro and it is super juicy and flavorful- I will get that next time I come here. This place is comparable to Fadi's and Aladdin's in taste, not serving size. I've definitely experienced better Mediterranean food and was disappointed in my order last night. The prices are pretty high for the amount they serve to you. My bf and I decided to give this place a try based on the wonderful reviews. We ordered the kafta kabob (ground beef) for $10.99. It came with diced salad, seasoned rice, hummus and pita bread. I also ordered hummus dip that came with JUST ONE pita bread, they should at least give two pita breads. The hummus came with pickled peppers? (not sure exactly) but it was a nice addition. However, I could barely taste the chickpeas and felt like they overdid it with the tahini sauce? or whatever sauce was mixed in there. Imagine over-adding mayo to anything. The diced salad was delicious. The rice was fine and the meat flavor was fine. For $10.99 the meat serving was small and a little bit overcooked. Compare it to two small hot dog sizes and biting into a well-done burger. ( I uploaded pictures) I've order kafta kabobs before at other Mediterranean restaurants and definitely feel I got jipped in the meat serving portion. The hummus is overpriced and I've had better tasting hummus at other restaurants for less the price. The pita bread was served cold and the texture was stale, not the type of pita bread I'm used too. It was a nice place to try. I did like that we were eating in a convenience store. Hole in the wall type of places are enjoyable and I had great service. I love this little gyros shop tucked in the back of a convenience store. If you want a delicious gyros or schwarma at a great price you'll never be disappointed with Al's Quick Stop. They have a long menu but I've never had anything but gyros and schwarma...and french fries. There's a few tables to eat on location and for those of you who use Uber Eats they are often near the top of the list when you fire up the app. I like to grab a sandwich then walk over to Rudyards next door for a craft beer. read more

If you're looking for delicious, filling Mediterranean food on the cheap, Al Quick Stop (note: not "Al's") is your place to go. The gyro in particular is perhaps the juiciest and most perfectly charred that I've had in Houston, I have to recommend any of their menu items that include it. UberEats seems to be a fairly popular means of ordering their food, and I typically default to that as well. They always prepare the food really quickly and are super reliable in that regard. The folks here also demonstrate incredible hospitality in their service, as I can attest to as both a customer and someone who's ordered catering from their menu. It's not the best gyro I've ever had, but it's decently tasty for the amount and price. Yeah it's kinda dirty and divey, but for $9, I had a plentiful amount of tasty gyro meat, a heavy dollop of hummus, cucumber salad, and lentil soup. The lentil soup was nothing to write home about...pretty boring, pureed texture. The cucumber salad was too astringent--I love lemon juice but this may have been overkill since it overpowered the veggie flavors. One piece of pita bread was pretty pitiful, and they charge for extra. The hummus and gyro meat were nice though, although some of the meat was a little bit on the burnt side. I would eat here again, but would never go out of my way for it, as there are good gyros around my area. read more

Not going to lie. I wasn't impressed. This place has such great reviews, but there wasn't anything that would bring me back. The guy behind the register, not the food counter, was a bit rude. It's a standard corner store grocery/ restaurant that really doesn't have much appeal on the inside or out. Limited seating but I suppose that usually isn't an issue. The gyro was average, and I couldn't even finish the falafel. I can't remember once I didn't finish falafel. It just had a greasy bland flavor that stuck on your palette even after trying to dip in all of their sauces. I'm pretty let down based on all the reviews I went over before deciding to try it out, but hey maybe they were just off that night.
