Some years ago when I worked at Yale I was a regular customer for lunch and an occasional dinner. Aladdin serves an uncommon pairing of cuisines, Mediterranean and pizza, that I never quite understood. They have been in business since 1988, so they are clearly on to something. I have only dined on the Mediterranean side of the menu. I have enjoyed many dishes there, typical items such as falafel, hummus, kebabs, tabouleh, and some bean salad whose name I don't recall right now, and found all of them to be fresh and flavorful. Some things were my choice, and some were recommended by Mohammed, the owner, a man whom I quickly learned to trust with my palate. It was he who turned me on to the lamb shawarma, which immediately found its way into my heart, and, quite literally, my dreams. The chicken is also good, but there is something special about the lamb. The lamb shawarma was always tender, delicately spiced, a wonderful combination of flavor and texture, excellent on its own and sublime in a pita with pickles, cabbage, and wonderful garlic sauce. The garlic sauce is a magical combination of yogurt, garlic, and spices that must be experienced to be believed. Strange though it may sound, I dreamed about lamb shawarma, even years after I moved on from that job and did not make the time to visit New Haven and Aladdin. None I have tried from other places captured that magic. After the passage of too many years, I recently found myself in New Haven. Hungry for dinner, I suggested Aladdin, and the family obliged. Upon entering I was surprised, and happy to see none other than Mohammed, who, amazingly, recognized me, and greeted me like an old friend. It was very touching to be welcomed so warmly. The restaurant itself has changed quite a bit since last I was there, for the better. In years gone by I was quite content to hunker down by myself in a plastic chair, under the harsh lighting, surrounded by the dingy white tile, thinking only of the lamb shawarmas as it worked its way into my digestive system and brain. This time I was there with my family, in the nicer, user-friendly and comfortably updated version of Aladdin. A quick glance at the menu gave me the impression that it hadn't changed much, but I knew long ago what I would order, so didn't really need the menu. We sat and chatted a bit, but one thing was on my mind, and when it came, when I at long last beheld its goodness, the intervening years seemed to drip away like so much garlic sauce out of the bottom of the pita. It was indeed as good as I remembered it, and I ate it slowly, mindful of the wonderful combination of flavors and textures that presented themselves to my mouth. As good fortune would have it, my son, who got the chicken shawarma, also enjoyed his meal, so I hope to get back to there sooner rather than later. Oh! This is a hidden gem right next to the more worn-out doors of the Bar. Tried it for the first time at around 11.30 at night. Wasn't sure and, frankly, my expectations were not very high. Asked for a chicken shawarma pita to be made spicy. And it was a home-run!! The chicken, the salad, the pita, and most of all the spicy sauce they use are lip-smacking delicious! A tough competitor to pitaziki for sure. It definitely wasn't a one-off. Revisited the place and ordered the same stuff and was blown away again. I was called the "n-word" by the person at the register. I went late at night and tried to order 2 large pizzas. I noticed we were charged $50 but large pizzas were only $12-$14 on the menu. We asked what and the person at the register said they only make party size late. That's 100% fine, but they didn't tell us that and charged us $20+ for each of our pizzas. So we asked to change our order to only have 1 party size. For some reason the person on the register started escalating and said the n-word. I asked him what he just said and he acted like he didn't say it. Then he started claiming he would he would fuck me up and called me "pussy". The manager was called over. He asked me to leave and I tried to explain the situation with their employee overcharging us then threatening us. When I kept explaining he decided to call the police on me. Terrible experience. Great big windows so you get a front row seat to see for yourself what you look like when you're that drunk. It's a sell out on Tuesday night about 10 minutes before and after BAR closes. You get a hot cheesey $2 slice that's been sitting atop the stove since yesterday's lunch. Don't forget to top it off with sweaty parmesean and red pepper. You'll ask yourself the next morning "What the hell is on my teeth?" The guys are always nice. They WILL smirk at you knowingly. They know your secrets but you can trust them. Halal (if that's a necessity for you), inexpensive, open late, and extremely tasty. No, an iron chef didn't cook everything on the menu, but if you're not snobby like that then you'll find happiness here. Their American food is solid, as are their Mediterranean offerings. You'll find anything from cheesesteaks and variations of grinders to wings/pizza and shawarma. Due to my friend's strong endorsement of their steakbomb I went against my shawarma inclination. To my pleasant surprise, I was quite pleased. First bite, hot, cheesy, meaty, and tasty. Second bite, this is totally worth it, I'm definitely coming back again. Third bite, wow that was so good, I need another. Wait, that's a bit of an exaggeration. Some kind soul was also nice enough to give us their leftover wings. Again, they did not disappoint. Crispy on the outside, plenty of meat on the bones, and a good heap of buffalo sauce slathered all over. I guess according to some of the below reviews, I am a Crown Street Drunk. But I'm not. I really love this place! Been going ever since I was little (okay, well it was a classier then) and I absolutely love nearly everything on the menu. A bonus is it is halaal. In my opinion the bests on the menu: steak bomb with everything (so juicy and delicious, I'd eat them all day every day even though they are unusually filling), Plain pizza ( its classic. in my opinion the salami pizza is too salty and chicken pizza is too soggy), chicken tenders ( a main staple in my diet), mujaddara with lamb (lentils, rice and lamb with yogurt sauce. an absolute must have), and the hot sub pastrami (just melts in your mouth). The reason I only gave it four stars is because the place itself is shady, inside and out. Currently it is in a trashy neighborhood so I tend to either go during the day or go with a crowd at night, but I tell ya, it is yum. PS. Do not park in their garage. You will either get blocked in or someone will come and say you owe a *(&&^^% load of money for parking for 5 minutes. Stick to street or even double parking ( if it is in front of the windows). The falafel here is actually pretty good. It's fragrant, well-spiced and just plain fresh. You can order it in a wrap or pita. I got mine in a pita ($3.50 with tax) and the biggest disappointment, I felt, was the fact that the pita was white flour. I hate white flour anything. It has no flavor and it's unhealthy, on top of it. If Aladdin's offered a wholewheat pita, I'd be back often. As it stands, I'd say Aladdin beats Mamoun's on sheer taste alone. That said, Mamoun's has more ambience and isn't as grimy-depressing as Aladdin. For vegans looking for a late-night to-go snack, I'd pick Aladdin; if you plan on eating at the restaurant, I'd take Mamoun's. read more

After flying into JFK, wrestling through rush hour traffic, checking into the New Haven Hotel, and taking a quick shower, all I wanted was something uncomplicated and delicious and right around the corner. Using the ever-helpful Yelp app on my phone, I scrolled through the Nearby options and came across Aladdin. It seemed silly to get a pizza from a place offering up falafel (I love you, falafel), so my man and I grabbed some hummus & pita chips and various pita-housed foodstuffs. I don't recall exactly what we had, but they were heavenly. The sauces were perfect, every component worked in conjunction. The hummus was very nice and smooth and didn't hang around in the form of hummus-burps. And OH, the pita chips. Fried right in front of our eyes in fragrant grease, so nice and dark. The place is unassuming, cheap, reminded me of the food carts of Portland, the staff were friendly, and it was bing bang boom, quick. They serve food late on a Sunday. This is how I ended up here recently. The interior is cute. Nothing fancy. They have a couple tables and some stools with a counter. We ordered some baba ganoush, spanikopita, and a pizza. The baba ganoush and spanikopita came out first. I have nothing to compare the spanikopita to. However, it looked proper. Just the light, flaky pastry showed a level of skill which I do not posses. It had kind of a smoky flavor, plenty of feta, and vegetable matter. I'm going to have to assume it was everything this dish is supposed to be. The baba ganoush tasted great. It's always a good thing when you run out of bread before you run out of what you're scooping up with it. Now, onto the pizza. Our large pizza was covered in sun-dried tomatoes and sausage. The crust was okay, but nothing I was blown away by. It turns out that when you cover a pizza in sugar thinking it's parmesan cheese, it's going to be a little weird. It was our own fault, but we managed to salvage a couple slices. All in all, our trip to Aladdin was positive. read more

I feel like I should give this place 3.5 stars, but I just can't bring myself to round it up to 4, so 3 it is. This may not be the best Middle Eastern food or pizza you will ever have, but the fact that you can get it at 1am makes it taste that much better. This is another one of those downtown spots that probably caters to the late-night crowd more so than the daytime crowd. I've gotten a few pitas and they're decent. The last one I had was a kibbeh pita, which was actually pretty good. I like this place because it's good, cheap, and accessible late at night near where all the action is... It's a tad dingy in appearance and doesn't have the same homely-ish feel as the other spots, but in terms of food, I am pretty sure I like Aladdin's more than King Falafel and definitely more than Sahara. Mediocre food at decent prices. I wouldn't ever come back here, but I've had friends in the area who were regulars. I see the other reviews here similarly--I've had pizza and falafel here before. I know "New York style" refers to the make of the pie, but in my book, "New York style" also means "good", so I can't let Aladdin pizza share that distinction. The restaurant was very run-down the last time I went and the food looked very unappetizing in its fluorescent presentation. This is really nice food at a really good price. What really stood out though was the seasoning in the shawrma and the sauces they used. Really flavorful. I wanted to keep eating. Had wings, fries, and a turkey shawrma. Everything was great, the wings were well seasoned and the meat falling off the bone, the blue cheese sauce matched it perfectly, the fries were crispy and the turkey shawrma hit the spot and tasted authentic (and was only $5). I myself will be there momentarily to pick up the pizza it was clear I was coming for the order as I repeated it twice n the man repeated it back. Finnaly after I found a spot to park.... I went in to find out they just disregarded my order completely. Then told me sry we can have it done in 15 min. I took there word for it and finnaly 28 min later ( from the time he said 15 min) I got my pizza. I used to come here when i attended Yale and loved it as very casual late night dinning esp falafel sandwich and hummus @ 1am (its a pizza, middle eastern, sandwich shop), and 6 years later we visited New Haven again and was impressed by the quality of food. Falafel sandwich authentic and a must try is their Kibbe (Fried dough ball w beef and spices). I usually always got middle eastern food bc hard to find authentic places near by. Its a great casual low key place but at midnight after a club or bars- it's absolutely the Best Place and well known to local New Haven / Yale students as hot spot late hours. I got the Lamb Shawarma wrap, the lamb was really moist and flavorful, almost as good as my mum's. Went halvsies with a friend who got the chicken kebob wrap which was also really good.
