I've had authentic British fish and chips so as much as I can see the effort, I would have to say it's a subtle attempt to the original. Solid effort with the fish but just left me missing the true authenticity. Decent portion overall but if you've had the real deal, it's hard to compare anything else to it. Always cooked to order and if you order over the phone they'll keep it hot under a heat lamp until you arrive and then bag it up. Food is cheap yet portions are big and good quality. I always get the same thing. 2 fish, 2 shrimp, and fries. The shrimp are gigantic. My wife thinks they stink but I love them. haha. I know with the previous H Salt yelp reviews people complain about all the extra charges for sauce but they give you a lot included with your order. They charge for extra since they keep their costs down. I love their cocktail sauce which is what I stick with. My wife goes for their tartar sauce. Other great friends things I've had are the fried zucchini, onions rings, and fried mushrooms. COVID-19 they provide hand sanitizer, employee wears masks and gloves, and they have the acrylic barrier up. Right now it's take-out only. This small establishment is deceiving. By driving by you would not know how great the food is. The area is mediocre and the shopping center is a little worn and could use some sprucing up. However, this little gem shines bright with fantastic customer service and super yummy food. We were greeted so pleasant and when trying to make a decision the gentleman behind the counter assured us we could share a meal easily and be satisfied. We chose the 3 fish and 3 shrimp with chips combo. We also added on some hushpuppies. Everything was piping hot and delicious. Although the young girl at the register was polite and helpful, there was not much she could do to change the actual eating and tasting experience I had. I ordered a fish and shrimp with chips and fried zucchini combo as suggested by the cashier/host. The two pieces of fish were not terrible but the batter on all of the items was grease drenched and soggy at the bottom. The food was served piled atop each other on the thinnest of white paper plates (picture 5000 plates in a plastic bag) along with comparably thin napkins and an open bottle of malt vinegar, ketchup, and a Khalfin dollar size cup of tartar sauce. I am a dipper of my food so requested additional tartar sauce which was sold at 65¢ a serving. I am a huge fan of fish and chips and often hunt down a new place when I have a craving. This experience does not warrant a return visit. I would suggest not frying the fish from preformed frozen and breaded inventory. The price point was fair for the portion size but I'd have easily payed almost double for a fresh piece of fish in a daily prepared and fried batter. The decor is made up of old English posters that have surely seen better days and some old light/fan fixtures that retain the grease of each day on the dangling chains from the same. They need to be degreased and/preferably replaced with something not so dated and unkempt. read more

My first time here. A very small place with a walk up counter to order at and several tables if you want to eat there. Ample parking in front of the building. I had a "Special" that was 1- fish, 3-Shrimp and 3- Onion rings and fries/chips. Everyting was cooked after you ordered it. The crispiness of the seafood was very good as were the onion rings. The french fries seemed to be from a bag and while they were cooked they tasted "mushy." Next time Iwill order something without fries. The service was quick and the lady at the order counter was friendly and very patient while I tried to make up my mind what i wanted to order. I will return but will avoid the fries/chips. read more

I called my order in and every time, I came it, my order was either ready or I had to wait a minute to my hot order. The fish they use taste great and its consistent. There are different type of fish that fish/chips places but the one they use there is stay moist in the inside and the outside is crispy. Let me tell you what's going to happen. You're going to order the 2 fish 2 shrimp zucchini and chips special for each person in your group $9.xx and then you're going to need beer or a beverage that produces burps. You're going to pour the malt vinegar they give you into a bowl or directly on fish like me and then dunk it in the Tartar sauce. I've had so many fish and chips in the past and their batter is amazing!! Not only do they have the best fish but I'm gonna have to give them best zucchini too!! This gets better, you're not going to finish your food and that's ok because you decided to stuff your face with fries. So now you have leftover zucchini and maybe fish. Throw them onto your hot cast iron (no oil needed) and wait till it gets crispy. It'll be so so worth it. We were on the 405 going South and remembered the old Scottish place on the corner of Westminster and Springdale. Wonder if it is still there. Rounding the corner of the construction area, we see the familiar English/Scottish decor of the front entrance. We parked right up front. Wow, there are patrons inside. The yellow sign says Alaskan Fish and Chips. We got lucky, and the missus snagged a table. Oh yeah, this place is old...as old as when Westminster still had buildings that look like they got transported from the British Isles. My turn at the counter as the couple behind the counter waited on me patiently. The missus blurted out London and rootbeer....I say..yeah make those two orders. Two rectangular white Cod Fish from Alaska in a crusty crispy batter is on the paper plate with French Fries on the side. A small container of their tartar sauce, which was actually really tasty , came with the London Fish plate. It was all neatly put on a red tray with Ketchup and vinegar and extra salt and napkins. Ice cold A&W Rootbeer in cans was a great SURPRISE. Alaskan Fish and Chips was a good eats experience, and certainly, the inside of the dining area is trying really hard to bring you back to the good old days of what it was to have Fish and Chips. Had a random craving for fish and chips and picked this spot out of the Yelp list I searched (via mapped area) of Orange County. I was not disappointed. Giving this place a solid 4 because the best fish and chips I had was in Fulham, England and I think the environment really gives weight to that fifth star regardless of where you are. Hard to compete/compare I know but at the end of the day it's just a piece of fried fish and fries so to earn that extra star I think it comes down to restaurant interior/experience/environment and this place is a bit lack luster in those areas. Order: * "Today's Special" Combo C (2 fish, 2 medium shrimp, 2 zucchini, chips) $8.99 - 4/5 * side order of sweet potato fries, $2.99 - 3/5 This was the perfect amount for 2 people to split as a small/med lunch and without feeling totally gross from eating a full meal of fried food (had we each gotten our own Combo I think I would've felt too heavy). Splitting a 3 item combo was the perfect way to try this place out and satisfy my craving. The fish was flaky and fresh and fried up nice and crispy. It could've used a bit of a "pat down" to get the excess oil off but it's fried food so what do you expect haha. I also wish they served it with a lemon to cut through the oil. The med shrimp are butterflied and fried in O's and while they were good, they weren't anything special; I'd maybe try the jumbo size next time if I wanted the fried shrimp. I also enjoyed the thick zucchini pieces which were piping hot upon first bite and cooked perfectly. They reminded me of the tempura zucchini which I like. I would recommend this combo to anyone looking to try this place because it is a good size and great price ($8.99) "sampler" combo. Though if I were to come back I may try the 2x fish and 2x jumbo shrimp combo and get a side of zucchini (though it would Defintely be more pricey). The sweet potato fries are very yummy but BE WARNED that they finish them with a tossing of GRANULATED WHITE SUGAR which I don't think is necessary. Next time I will ask for them PLAIN/with no sugar. I also prefer salty fries so the sugar was a bit off putting for me personally. Last mentions are the tartar and cocktail sauce which were just "okay to me. Nothing special and we were given one of each since we ordered one combo and needed a second one. The cocktail sauce is unusual because there is no horseradish in it, I believe it is just ketchup mixed with Tabasco which is interesting. read more

I'm 52 and am in the same house from Grandparents across the street. It was hsalt and was my favorite as a kid. Had not been in a while yet in the last couple months have gone a few times. It's exactly as it was when I was 10. The seating, the decor etc is all original and so awesome that it HAS NOT CHANGED a bit other than the name. Food is really great. Taste textures are spot on for this type of place. Fish, shrimp, fries, coleslaw all off it realllly brought awesome positive childhood memories back. My folks wanted fish and chips tonight for dinner so I decided to try a different place other than my usual spot. The staff at the Alaskan Fish and Chips were very friendly and helpful when I asked questions about the menu items. I ordered the Kettle Dinner which came with 10 pieces of fish, 2 orders of chips and a large Cole Slaw. I also ordered some hush puppies to try. The food was cooked to order and I only waited 15mins. Service and price for food was excellent. The Fish was fried perfectly, had a nice amount of seasoning, very flaky, not oily. Cole Slaw was also delicious, had a hint of sweetness, not too much mayonnaise. And instead of regular chips I had ordered Sweet Potato fries that were absolutely yummy. The fish were good as well, cooked perfectly, they were falling apart while I was trying to dip them, they just tasted a little sweet. Not sure if that was the batter or if they used the oil that is used for the hush puppies, so I had to drench my fish in tartar sauce in order to not taste whatever sweetness I was tasting.
