The Tray is back and better than ever! Currently in their soft opening era so you will get 15% off on your order. I am so glad they are in Westminster since it's closer to me. A huge benefit to moving to this location is that there is a lot more space for parking and less traffic than the previous Garden Grove location. Everything is cooked fresh and you will not regret paying for the food here. They really look out for the people and will not skimp out on the proteins. We've been searching for solid teriyaki since moving back to San Diego from Seattle and the search has been rather fruitless thus far. We were in the area and though we weren't quite ready for dinner, the 15% off offer for their soft opening drew my interest. I then looked the place up on Yelp and the pictures SPOKE to me. This has happened before, though, so I held my excitement in check. Was immediately greeted by the cashier and I ended up ordering a teriyaki plate and mango habañero teriyaki plate. The cashier said it'd take about 10 minutes, which it did. While I was waiting, he also offered me a cup of ice water, which was awesome. When he handed me the takeout order, I was immediately struck by how heavy the bag was. It smelled incredible, but in my experience, large portions equates to lower quality, so again...I tempered my expectations. Without exaggeration, each container had to have been about a pound and a half. Opened the containers in the car and was immediately struck by how incredible it looked and smelled. Great char on the chicken and sauce thick enough that it clung to each piece. Each order came with a small cup of steamed veggies (broccoli, cauliflower, and carrots with a white sauce) that whet the appetite nicely. The first bite of chicken and rice...divine. Absolutely incredible. WE HAD FOUND AMAZING TERIYAKI OUTSIDE OF SEATTLE. the chicken was flavorful, smoky, sweet, tender, and moist. I'd intended to just have some for a snack but the whole family started devouring it and dinner just happened in the parking lot. It was so good that my wife went back in and ordered another teriyaki chicken plate and garlic lime chicken plate to go. They even gave us a complimentary order of egg rolls right out of the fryer that were awesome, too. If teriyaki is your thing, run, don't walk to The Tray. Moved to La La Kitchen 1.5miles away, the menu is exactly the same and talked to the staff and they said they moved about a month ago. Seems like they merged with that business and the name Tray Fusion Grill isn't seen on the menu but Lala Kitchen is. Exact same menu though and pictures. It's actually quite large, larger than your face even if you're a big back lol, and the amount of meet you get is more than you'd get for the same $ spent elsewhere even though it does look very simple. You're here for actually good teriyaki/chargrilled meats which it delivers on. Pictured is garlic lime chicken, and angus beef, beef is better, both of us agreed upon that, would want to try another chicken flavor since it's charbroiled grilled - the garlic lime is a little more lime than garlic and it doesn't quite fit with how chargrilled it is fwiw. INTERESTING NOTE is the sauces, we actually swapped them since the beef was sweet, the spicy sauce that supposedly went with the garlic lime was good to contrast. And VICE VERSA, the sweet bbq sauce was good on the garlic lime for contrast as well. Was 2 meals worth unless you just did some deadlifts at the gym then maybe I could eat the whole thing if my body was primed. WAIT: did take a solid 10-15 minutes to order so be prepared to wait but it seems like they make it to order fresh then! Tried this local restaurant for lunch and walked away very happy. And honestly surprised. I've had so many bowls and trays where the chicken is over cooked and dry which is not the case here. I was a little upset to find just chicken and rice for a PLATE. Where were the veggies? Unimpressed. It was too much rice for me, I like a mix of veggies in there, at least for $15. The cashier also said the wait time was 10 min but it was closer to 20. I vaguely remember ordering over the phone years ago and having the same wait time problem. So doesn't make a difference if you call ahead or order in person in my experience. The lobby is smaller. No chairs to sit in. We didn't realize how popular this place was the first time we went. We got in and placed our order and it was about a 30 minute wait for all of our plates. Granted, a few of us ordered for dinner, too. We have no complaints about the wait, because everything is cooked to order and it is totally worth the wait. But if you are crunched for time, you might want to call in your order at 10:00am when they open and give them the time to have it ready for you. We subsequently did that with future orders and it was always ready on time. I always order the plates. My favorite is the BBQ and Angus beef. It comes with rice and veggies. They give you one sauce, but you have to pay for extra. You can tell that the sauce is house made, so I understand the charge...I just wish it was filled up more. That sauce gives those plates life! I have also ordered the Spicy Garlic Lime Chicken plate and the Spicy Lemongrass Plate. Both delicious! My coworkers have had the Teriyaki Chicken, Mango Habanero, and BBQ Shrimp plate. No one had any complaints. I've wanted to try their Garlic Noodles for quite some time, but when I try to order it, I'm told that the cook isn't available until after 1pm and by then I have to get back to work. I'm also anxious to try their shrimp ceviche! They have their own beef jerky, that I have yet to try, as well and from looking at their store, they have a good selection of them, too. I was expecting a plate due to the photo posted on the menu but received a large bowl (see photo). Imagine a Waba bowl on steroids... The flavor was great! The beef was a great balance of sweet and salty. There's an ample amount of rice so if you come hungry, this "plate" could be split into two meals. Jasmine tea - $2.00 before tax for a large. It was okay. Half the cup was filled with ice. AMBIANCE The parking is limited in front but there is parking to the side of the lot. The interior is clean and relatively new. SERVICE I walked in and ordered one plate and a drink. Nobody was in line before me. It took roughly 20-25 minutes to get my food. That's why I'm docking a star. Family didn't know where to send me to get some food for lunch. The Tray Fusion Grill came up in my Yelp feed for takeout places near Fountain Valley. I liked that the restaurant uses locally sourced ingredients, has fully vaccinated staff, and requires masks. We also like supporting local businesses. Family members texted their orders to my passenger while I drove to Irvine to pick up chocolate covered strawberries from Tanaka Farms. The drive from Tanaka Farms would only take 20 minutes so we decided to pick up lunch before our last pick up at 85c Fountain Valley. There are a few parking spaces in front of the restaurant. A man of authority, possibly the manager, came to the counter to take our order as a staff member delivered a takeout order to another customer that had been waiting. We ordered a BBQ shrimp plate, a mango habanero BBQ chicken plate, a filet mignon garlic noodle, and a BBQ pork plate. Daughter had texted that she wanted a Hokkaido milk tea which they did not have. I liked how the man instantly helped by suggesting alternatives. They did have a honeydew with crystal boba or winter melon. They also had freshly brewed Thai tea. He sold me on getting a large Thai tea and daughter ordered a sparkling lychee. The prices for the plates may seem slightly more expensive than a similar restaurant, but I can understand the need to charge more when you have to pay staff more to keep them and getting ingredients is difficult. While we were waiting, we noticed a large assortment of beef jerky made in the USA of premium quality and bold taste which my husband might appreciate. The portions were ample. The shrimp were truly "jumbo" in size, sweet, and delectable. The filet mignon was chewy. The pieces of high quality beef were small and thus easy to overcook. I liked the vegetables of zucchini, bell peppers, and onions in the filet mignon garlic noodle and took them from my husband's dish. The mango habanero chicken was tender and peppery. The BBQ pork was cut thin and tasted good. We were puzzled as to what the bag of sauces were for. There was a citrusy sauce and Sriracha sauce. The food didn't need sauce. The food here was delicious. I had the Beef plate. The problem was with waiting 30 minutes for it in a quick takeout setting. There were only a couple customers and had I known it would take so long I would've went elsewhere. The experience was made worse by a police officer who came in with his radio blaring. He wasn't using an earpiece and I let him know politely that it was loud and he agreed. I had headphones on for music and even turned way up all I could hear was police radio squak. I understand the need for a radio and cops must eat, but going into a public place sitting down with the radio up was rude and he absolutely disturbed the peace in the restaurant. The restaurant should've asked him to turn it down as well. They didn't. After finally getting my food, I ate quick to get away from all the noise. The only reason I didn't give them a 5 is despite what their menu shows there wasn't any vegetables on the four plates we purchased.
