Decided to finally stop in and try this place since it was halfway between an event we traveled to Webster, New York for and home in Buffalo. This place has been highly recommended by friends and yelp, yet I must question if they were confused as to where they were because this place in no way deserves one star, if any. They pack people in like sardines with barely any space for staff to walk between tables. The BBQ combo I ordered was a special. The ribs were okay, the chicken was so dry it was stringy and the grilled shrimp was more like warmed shrimp - no grill marks at all. My son's burger was charred to death; I am surprised that my son ate it. Alex's Pierogis were merely heated up pierogis with what was supposed to be pulled pork on top drizzled with some type of sauce that made my lips pucker. French onion soup was bread and cheese, no taste at all. Service was okay; server was friendly but inattentive. She was at our table 3 times when water glasses were empty and did not fill water until I asked her. She allowed plates to stack and clutter. We were in and out with two kids (ages 12 and 10) in less than an hour which again made me question how food could be prepared that fast. When walking out there were people literally standing at the entrance smoking which should not be the case. My family and I had to walk through clouds of smoke to get to the parking lot to our car. I cannot even say it must have been a bad night because I think that this is the norm, not the exception. I can say I have been here but can also say I will never go back. read more

The food is terrible, so is the service and the decor is dated and falling apart. Been living in this city for over five years. As I can tell, this place is still one of my favorites I'd like to go out and eat. Alex's Place is a great restaurant that I tend to eat seafood. This place has the most delicious clams that I've eaten. The restaurant is filled with well-mannered people and the service is, as always, great. The price was a bit high, but understandable. Horrible beef on weck! To start, ordered a specialty drink and wished there was some alcohol in in, then maybe my meal would have been edible. My husband wanted to stop for a beef on weck. I Asked the waitress if it was all well done and she said yes. I figured well....how bad could it be. She offered sides and I took broccoli since I thought I'd make something healthy out of my meal. Waitress shows up with a burned roll with all the salt rubbed off. Who serves a toasted roll on a roast beef sandwich??? Well I figured it was fridays roll served on Monday so it had to be toasted to make it edible again. Then there was the broccoli, she brought green beans and asked if it was ok. I said no cuz they looked like canned beans. She asked what else she could bring me , I said fries reluctantly cuz I knew that disgustingly looking beef sandwich was not gonna satisfy my appetite. She took the beans then showed up in less than two minutes with fries. COLD ! Who eats cold fries? Who takes less than two minutes to make fries.??? I went here for the very first time today. The ribs were awesome! They were tender, seasoned well, and not over-sauces. The coleslaw was pretty good too. The fries needed to be salted, which is something I never do. My wife had the French dip, which was outstanding as well. The au jus tasted like French onion soup, it was so tasty. Been going here for years and have never been disappointed. The ribs are wonderful -my favorite. I also like the Pittsburg salad. The staff is friendly. The restaurant is very clean. I want to begin by stating that the server was wonderful however overall was not impressed and did not enjoy my experience at this restaurant. First, we had a reservation for a large party and we were seated at two different tables which did not face in the same direction nor have the option of moving closer together. We had a worker scold us in the beginning for trying to move the tables closer which really didn't set a good tone as far as I am concerned. I am getting married and our bridal party wanted to go out together and enjoy stories together. This couldn't be done from two different tables (round and long table) when our parties backs were to us. Second, I ordered the special T-Bone Red and Blue and after about 15 minutes after the order was placed I told that it was unavailable. I was told that a more expensive steak could be ordered and prepared similar. The steak that I did received had a glaze I didn't particular enjoy and was also burned on the end. Did not taste anything like the special advertised. While my fiancee's family stated to be that they have been frequenting your restaurant for years, I was less than impressed with my meal and the accommodations. I sent e-mail to restaurant but they never apologized for the service or offered any way to make up; below is their response (I sent follow up to their message and have not been contacted): Manager e-mail to me: Thank you for taking the time to let us know that your experience last night was not up to our standard of service. I am forwarding your email to Kati, our GM to perform our performance review. If you wouldn't mind me taking a bit more of your time, I would like to ask for some additional information that will help us address our staff. What time were you dining? What was the name on the reservation? And can you describe the initial staff member that seated you, the one that spoke inappropriately? Thank you again for your email. Often poor experiences go unreported and unaddressed. Okay where to begin with this one. Let me start by saying Nikki is the best waitress ever. She's very friendly and extremely funny I haven't laughed that hard in a very long time. She was right on top of things and took very good care of us. As for the food it was fantastic. Two of us got the chicken and rib combo with loaded mashed potatoes. The ribs were cooked perfectly, the meat fell right off the bone. Same with the chicken. The barbecue sauce had the perfect blend of spices and tang. The loaded mashed potatoes were topped with melted cheese and bacon served with a side of sour cream . When you're hungover there's nothing better. Our other person got the prime rib and he said it was fantastic, cooked perfectly, very tender. I'm not a big prime rib fan but it looked delicious. I had the French onion soup with extra cheese because who doesn't love a lot of cheese. It was excellent, ooey gooey goodness. The manager or owner, I'm not sure who he was, made his rounds to each of the tables which I thought was a nice touch. The prices are fair, good variety on the menu. In the area for a couple of days and had to stop in. What a disappointment. I guess flies don't really die in the winter like I thought, they stay at the bar at Alex's. One large fly hanging out on a beer tap, a small one set up residence in our bread basket. The lights over the bar were loaded with dead bugs. I had the 10 ounce prime rib which was half fat. Beer was still cheap, but the food prices seem to have gone up. Ran into some people in the local Irish pub O'Lacy, and they had a similar experience. Off the list for must stop. read more

The waitresses are amazing. Most of them have been there many years. I would recommend if the try sitting you near the register area wait or ask to be seated somewhere else. The quality of the chicken use to be better. Sitting at the grill area is cool for a change. They have twilight menu for smaller portions and better prices. read more

I see from reading some of the other reviews that we are not alone. We went last night for dinner, and although the meats were good...honey got the half rack of ribs, I got the black and blue salad with a 5oz. steak on it...the salad greens were wilted and his baked potato was almost cold. The salt was also congealed in the shaker. A screaming baby nearby didn't help. So much for ambience. I also agree there's too many tables in the place, with people stacked up on each other and people's butts sliding by your table just to squeeze by. Why is it there can't be nice fresh greens for salads??? Other places sure manage nicely. And not just crappy old ice-berg either. ugh. Not a fan. I have been here a few times and everytime have left feeling I paid more than I would at another restaurant for similar product. It is upscale with some frozen choices not fresh like you would expect. I will have to say I have not eaten the ribs which they are known for but it seems those that get that choice when we have been out have been more pleased than myself. Don't be greedy. Is how I start my review. Why? because when you try to stuff 12 tables into a 10 table room no one's dining experience is enhanced! Which is exactly what happened to us @Alex's a few nights ago. It was only a Thursday night and we DID have reservations. We were seated at a table for 4, even though there were 5 of us dining! Was so crowded the server could not even service the tables behind us without knocking into my chair constantly. After complaining we were seated to a larger table after about a 20 minute wait at the bar....again. We were comped with a round of drinks, however I've never had a vodka/cran that was devoid of vodka....interesting. Well, the saving grace that evening was the food, as it was very good. If you're driving cross-country or just happen to get hungry somewhere between Buffalo and Rochester Alex's Place will be a pleasant surprise. The lackluster exterior leads to a nicely decorated interior with great atmosphere and amazing food. We joked that we ended up in the most American place we could have on Canada day. The food isn't upscale, it's just standard fare done extremely well. I remember when going to Alex's was a special thing. You got a bit dressed up, took your time for a good meal... well, this was not the experience we had there yesterday. Went with family for a dinner get together. The place feels old timey. Also feels cramped and very little light from the outside. Almost feels like a basement dining experience. I had the sirloin steak. Very bland. No real seasoning. Had to use A-1 sauce. Mashed potatoes had no seasoning also. Just tasted like potatoes mashed up. Should have gotten gravy. I wish more restaurants would have lighting like Alex's has. It is very dim inside, which I find relaxing as compared to the harsh overhead lighting you typically find at restaurants. Our waitress was very nice and even arranged a little birthday special for the 95 year old we were celebrating with. We ordered the cheesecake (which was AMAZING) and she kindly put in a candle and helped us sing happy birthday. We overheard a table behind us that drove 2 hours just to order dessert because it's that good. (If driving a long distance maybe call ahead and ask if they have the dessert item in house, because they drove all that way only to discover that they were out of what they wanted.) We had an amazing experience at Alex's. We stopped in Batavia for the night on a very long road trip, so we were tired and cranky. But Alex's food definitely improved our mood. The wings were wonderful--the barbecue sauce is really tangy and nice. We ordered the ribs dipped in the barbecue and garlic sauces, and they were GREAT. The ribs truly were fall-off-the-bone tender--I didn't even need a knife to cut the meat. Service here was excellent, we never wanted for filled water, drinks, or cleared plates. I would say our food was good for the most part---although nothing terribly memorable, and pretty old-school meat and potatoes Americana style, the kind of food my parents (in their 60's/70's) adore. Not much in the way of lighter or vegetarian/vegan fare. I don't believe they have a specific "children's' menu" which made ordering with my kids it a little tricky , since my kids are not really into this style of food. My son had a burger which seemed pretty ordinary. Another in our party had French Onion soup, which has great potential, but was way salty ( and I have a pretty high salt threshold). My FIL had prime rib which looked well prepared and he enjoyed, and since it was for his birthday we came here, we were pleased.
