Do you ever wish you could enter a time machine and go back to a simpler era?That's how I felt when I recently had dinner at "Alex's Place". I walked through the door and VOILA! I was back in the 1970's! The decor, the menu choices, and even the prices. Fun! Two of us sat at a cozy table near the fireplace and enjoyed a long conversation and a relaxing meal. We both started with French Onion Soup (served in crocks). It was DELICIOUS! Just the right onion to beef flavor in the broth....and containing a giant homemade crouton smothered with Swiss cheese. The perfect winter soup! Next we continued with the beef theme. A Certified Angus Sirloin for me with rice pilaf (I told you it was the '70s) and a prime rib with a baked potato (butter and sour cream) for my dining companion. Both of our entrees were perfectly cooked and perfectly seasoned. And, this meat was not broiled.... it was cooked on a charcoal grill... right in the middle of the restaurant....seriously... I saw it. For dessert we shared a piece of homemade cherry crumble pie. Perfect flaky crust..... lots and lots of tangy cherries.... wonderful crumbly topping...... and a huge dollop of (real) whipped cream on the side!. Added information... Returned, yet again. Even better visit, since we got there well before closing. Sat near the char pit, the place was packed, so I had a great time watching the view from my seat. Being that the restaurant is in Batavia, the staff proved that there is a lot of small-town charm to go around to their customers. I *should* have tried something new...but I had to have a repeat of my last meal a few weeks ago. (1) Service? Top notch. (2) Food? Gooooood! (3) Ambiance? Friendly, charming dining area. CLEAN! We had excellent food, excellent service, good value and were seated in a charming quaint atmosphere! We've been coming here once a year in our travels and we were sad to hear some poor reviews, but decided to try it anyways. We were initially told by a very busy (and pleasant) hostess that because we didn't call in to put our name on the list we would have an hour and a half wait. Another couple who's name was just called, overheard the hostess and offered to share their table with us. (We now have new friends!) They were very satisfied with their ribs. Hubby had a burger which he said was done "medium" the way he ordered, except that it was burnt on the surface. (He ate it without complaining and only told me about it now.) My fish fry was perfect. This is my family's go-to spot in Batavia!! Me living in Buffalo and my parents and brother living in Rochester, we often meet half way to celebrate birthdays at Alex's! I love their salads and chicken. Because I am not a huge ribs fan, I can honestly say I've only had one rib here, but it was pretty good! The last time I was there, March 10th, there was a very short wait. I don't think they do reservation or call aheads. The wait is fine because they have comfy chairs and a nice bartender. We had a great waitress then too! I wish I remembered her name. It seems like every waitress there is very nice and helpful. They are quick to put up with my father's shenanigans. My husband and I went there for dinner and it was absolutely great, went back about 3 weeks later( and I got the same thing as last time because the first time was so delicious) but the second time was horrible, turkey tasted like spurkey gravy had no flavor and it left a nasty taste in my mouth, took 2 bites and I was done..... A billboard for Alex's Place caught my husband's eye while we were staying in town, so this is where we went for dinner. The restaurant has a vintage supper club feel, dark and cozy in the bar area. There were crackers and cheese spread out on the bar, but someone said the crackers were stale, so I didn't try any. It was very humid out, so maybe that had something to do with it. Our female server at the bar, while not overly friendly, was efficient enough. I had a glass of the Steak House Cabernet with my meal for $7. Being a garlic lover, I ordered the half charcoal grilled chicken, garlic style ($9.99), and had the French onion soup as my side. The soup had some garlic salt sprinkled on it prior to going under the broiler to melt the cheese, and while this was a nice idea, the salt had gotten somewhat charred and just added a burnt flavor to the cheese. The onions and broth were pretty good and not overly salted or MSG flavored like some places put out. My chicken did have garlic flavor brushed on the skin and then grilled, but unfortunately the white meat had gotten fairly dried out. I think Alex's is probably a good choice and maybe I just had a little bit of an off experience. For me I put this visit at a 2 1/2 star experience, but I would give them another try if I was in the area again. read more

Had dinner here , consisting of an angus beef steak with a baked potato. Steak was very tasty and cooked as I had requested. Started off with a small cup of beef barley soup, which could have been hotter. Dessert was cherry pie which was good. Always a favorite stop on our way out east to visit family. I had the half rib half chicken with enough left over for another delicious meal. Pros: Food was good. Very fairly priced and you will need a to go box. The cheese platter at the bar was a very nice touch. Servers were pleasant. Oh my goodness. My boyfriend (in Buffalo) and I (in Rochester) decided to meet up mid-week for dinner in Batavia, and Alex's had some good reviews and heavy advertisement. We arrived on a Wednesday night around 6:45 with a 30 minute wait. After the hostess gave away our table to other diners, we were finally seated. The waitress promptly delivered our basket of 'fresh baked' bread- which was incredibly moist/not defrosted yet and then listed off the night's specials. The meatloaf, potato and vegetable combo for $8.99 sounded pretty good, so we both ordered it. As an appetizer we got the spinach and artichoke dip, which came out in a color and texture i've never seen before. The plates were piping hot (fresh out of the microwave) and the dip tasted alright. Next came the meatloaf. It wasn't too pretty in terms of looks but it tasted fine. It came with a small dish of corn and a scoop of mashed potatoes. They have much better barbecue than other options but their early bird options are also good. I'm on the road again. Decided to get off in Batavia for night. Found Alex's on Yelp and read the reviews. This is an area where there doesn't seem to much. However, Alex's turned out to be an oasis for me. I sat at the bar. I ordered the small prime rib, medium, and the short order of ribs, barbecue. (No one mentioned on Yelp that ribs come two ways) The atmosphere was relaxed which is what I needed. I was very pleased with the order when it came. Prime rib was melt in mouth perfect. Ribs, to me, were ribs. No different from any others I had but they were still good. Would I come back? Oh most definitely! read more

On vacation and stopped for some R&R in Batavia We asked the front desk clerk at our hotel for recommendations and she sent us to Alex's Place. My husband had baby back ribs and I had regular ribs. The food was fabulous! We live in Kansas City, Missouri, known for it's BBQ, so we have pretty high standards. We were not disappointed in how the ribs were cooked, but preferred them with no additional sauce then what was brushed on while being cooked. Really DISAPPOINTED! Have been regulars frequenting Alex's in Batavia for over 10 years as a "destination restaurant" from the Buffalo area. Had a mid-afternoon meal on a Wednesday just before 3:00. The front dining rooms had a few occupied tables but we were walked to one of the last tables in the back next to the grill area just outside the kitchen entrance. Two other tables were occupied in this area. Grungy, lousy view, and HOT. Much hotter than the front of the house and noisy! Mistake from the get-go not asking to be re-seated elsewhere. Presented with what appeared to be scaled back menus versus those from previous visits. Learned after ordering that those being seated around us minutes later were receiving different full menus. Apparently we weren't told we were provided with lunch menus? Food? Fair but nothing to write home about as in past visits. Value? From now on I can and will spend my money elsewhere. Service? Servers had an attitude of preferring to be elsewhere. What used to be a GREAT restaurant, sadly needs a major deep cleaning, and perhaps select server performance appraisal reviews by management. I have recommended this restaurant to countless people over the years and disappointingly am unable to do so anymore. read more

Had dinner here tonight I ordered the Top Sirloin steak and my wife got pork medallions. Each came with a salad. The problems started almost immediately when the salads arrived. My wife's salad had some obvious wilted lettuce on it, like it was made earlier in the day and had been waiting to be served. She wasn't pleased and commented, "how hard is it to make a decent salad." When the dinners arrived mine was fine and hers was cold. My top sirloin was cooked the way I wanted it and my potato was really hot, right from the stove. However on my wife's plate the green beans and sweet potatoes were cold. We immediately let the waitress know and she told the manager who shortly brought a new plate for my wife. The food on that plate was the same temperature so we gave up. My wife ate some of her food. My plate was good and hot. That's the reason for the 3 rating. 50/50 on the food is not good. The service we got was great and very responsive so hats off for that. Excellent!! We had eaten here about 12 years ago and decided it was time to go back! My husband & I had our nephew for a sleepover and he wanted a cheeseburger so we decided to head out. We called before leaving the house to see if we could make reservations since it was a Friday night during lent. They put our name down on the call ahead list as they don't take reservations. When we arrived at 6 we only had to wait 5 minutes which was great because the place was packed!! This place is hiding over by the Batavia Downs track. I ended up ordering a cheeseburger and fries since my nephew had been talking about them for the previous hour : ) and my nephew ordered the kids size cheeseburger with fries. There wasn't much difference in size between my cheeseburger and his!! Both were large in size and so tasty!! Lots of juicy flavors and the fries were hot! My husband ordered the 1/2 chicken dinner. I travel for business and stopped here on a whim to get lunch off the Thruway. This is the second try having stopped here a couple of weeks ago. It's dark and dated on the inside to start. I sat at the bar both times so I can't speak to the table service. The bar maid was obviously more interested in talking to the regulars than waiting on me...which I get. The food is average at best although I was told the ribs are their specially but i don't eat much red meat. Opted for the eggplant sandwich on trip one and the fish sandwich on this stop. The Cesar salad was soaked in dressing and the grated cheese was piled on. The beef barley soup was ok. On this stop there was a large pile of dirty dishes next the me on the bar that wasn't bussed. While I ate the pile continued to grow. This always makes me think about cleanliness and how the kitchen looks. This really turned me off to this place and won't be back again. read more

I ordered some sort of ooooooverpriced scallop pasta with red peppers and a type of alfredo sauce. It was okay tasting, sort of bland. Shortly after I returned home I had to run to the toilet. Then, for lunch the next day I ate the leftovers, and proceeded to the toilet. Don't know what I was expecting the second time but I needed to go food shopping, so I just ate it. I have eaten at Alex's Place in the past, and have been pleased. However, we had late lunch today, Sunday, and I was not really happy. I ordered the half rack of ribs, and the portion seemed very small. They were over grilled to the point of being hard on the ends. The fries were cold. My husband had a cheeseburger, the lettuce was a thick hunk, and the tomato was almost 1/2 inch thick. The burger was dry. On a positive note, the waitress was delightful, attentive and pleasant. We Went here on a Wednesday evening, waitress sucked she was rude, slammed glasses down on the table, as we asked for something she would walk away while we were talking. Have traveled all around the world to many countries and many locations across the USA. I have visited many restaurants in Batavia over the years, Alex's being one of them. I have always felt their French onion soup was just simply a party in the mouth. As such I try to get a cup of French onion wherever else I eat when eating out. I have never had better French onion soup. Alexs has mastered French onion soup and it is consistently fantastic every time. I also enjoy their Pittsburgh salad and ribs. I am not a hug rib eater but have had ribs at several well know BBQ joints across the US. I feel Alexs competes and would gladly eat their ribs over most others. read more

Like many others, I was turned on to Alex's Place by an elderly relative. Years of dining out and widsom has apparently served them well as this place is a true gem! Located just off the Thruway at exit 48 (I think....the one where Batavia Downs is located), this small family-owned place offers great service and hearty food. My steak, cooked over an open fire, was charred to perfection but absolutely Medium Rare, as I had requested and served hot to table. For under $20, you can get a really great meal here. The family atmosphere was very much to our liking. I literally felt like I was going out to dinner with my parents and grandparents. For me, that's a good feeling. read more

Had heard good things about Alex's in Batavia, and it was within walking distance of my hotel so I took a strolll over around 8:pm on Thursday night and sat at the kitchen bar. Service was quick. Picked this spot to meet up halfway with family. The bartenders and servers were very pleasant, but the restaurant was a bit out dated. Complimentary cheese and crackers (but be careful people were very protective over the complimentary cheese and crackers at the bar and we even had someone wanting to pick a fight over whose crackers were whose) while having a drink at the bar, which I thought was unique. The steak that we all ordered was cooked as we asked and charcoal grilled but nothing special, I could not taste the charcoal grill flavor. Others at my table had the ribs and steak combo and voted for getting the ribs over the steak for anyone coming in the future. Stopped in after noticing the signs on i90. Nice place, a little dated but comfortable. Had the pig boat...ribs and pulled pork. Pulled pork had a nice flavor and very moist although a bit mushy. Ribs, which they are famous for, tasted braised or boiled then thrown on the chargrill for a few moments...mine was slightly burned. Kinda of a nice flavor but I wouldn't order again. Great staff! I wanted to give Alex's a 5 star but after going back after several years, the food quality wasn't the same as I remember. Our server gets a 5 Star as she was Outgoing, Fun, and checked in on us often. We ordered Ribs & Wings, and Crab Cake dinner. The Ribs were dry and it was hard watching my husband pull them apart or try to cut threw them to eat. I'm pretty sure our server noticed, because she asked if he needed xtra barbeque sauce. I ate 1/2 of a Crab Cake and was sick to my stomach later that night. Atmosphere is dark, which I don't mind for dinner ambiance, but I could see dust around items on walls. Just wasn't how we remembered Alex's. But Service was exceptional~ I personally would change up some of the old school recipes, like make crab cakes lighter, maybe a roasted red pepper sauce to go with. I ate here on a Tuesday for lunch because it was recommended to me by my boss. I ordered the fried mozzarella as an app and it was perhaps the best I have ever had. Excellent presentation. The soup du jour was broccoli cream and it was great. My main course was the half rack of ribs with loaded mashed potatoes. Wow! Undoubtedly the best ribs I have ever had at a restaurant. I ordered the garlic/bbq sauce combo. The ribs had a lot of meat on them and were so well flavored. Our server was Rachel and she was great with bringing extra plates for bones and never letting our water get empty. The pricing was fair. The decor is a little dark, but I like that it is old school. My dining experience on Mother's Day 2021 at this restaurant was extremely disappointing. Not only did they make us wait beyond our reservation time, but the service and food options were inexcusable. There were only about ten items on the abbreviated menu and three of them no longer existed as they ran out of food. This applied to drinks as well as dessert. I am uncertain why so many restaurants are so dark, or why it's necessary to sit people on top of each other when the restaurant is empty! I liked the decor and my food was great, i got the ribeye hoagie with peppers, onions and mushrooms w a side salad. Steak was cooked perfectly and melted in my mouth. It was very big I actually ended up pulling out of the roll so I could finish it. My husband got ribs, chicken and shrimp combo plate. His chicken was ok, he said he could cook better on grill but his ribs and shrimp were incredible! Ok so this place is right at home in Western NY. Not a lot in the way of decor. The outside is a total dump. Inside not much more in the way of decor. The locals make this place rock with good reason. Great bar staff. They know how to make a martini and have Rib Shack Red. The BEST Clams Casino I've Ever Had. Try Alex's cut prime rib. Delish! PS the bar stools don't cool off on Friday night so be prepared for a worthwhile wait. read more
