I had a great breakfast here with friends on a Sunday morning, but note the closer to noon you get, the more likely you are to have to wait for a table. Street parking was easy to find (hope you parallel park well). We had the pumpkin spice pancakes and two breakfast samplers, coffee, and tea (Harney & Sons if it matters). Everything came out quickly, was well made, and the portions were exactly right. I was glad that things were not too sweet or salty but in that perfect middle. Great food, good price, friendly service, and super kid friendly!! My mom, sister, me, and 3 kids under 4 are a lot. But the whole restaurant was so friendly and helpful. My sister loved the horseradish burger and ate the whole thing. My daughter and I enjoyed their western omelette. They automatically brought out a second small plate for my 2 year old and separated my sister's boys food onto two plates with each having their own serving of fries and half a sandwich. It's hard to telll from the exterior on what it's like inside, which is cozy and warm. Since we arrived on a Sunday morning at around 11:30am, we were told it'd be a 45-60 min wait but it was only about a 20-30 min. I had their homemade corned beef hash with 2 eggs over easy and an English muffin. The portion was generous to say the least and well-prepared. The coffee was decent and had a couple of refills. The service was impeccable considering they had a full house and a waiting line. I plan to return again not only for brunch but also their daily lunch specials. Alex's is a Poughkeepsie staple. It has earned it's great reputation, the food is great and the amount you get is definitely more than what you pay for. My only complaint -- I've been on two occasions where homeless people have begged for change INSIDE THE RESTAURANT. I have never experienced this anywhere else. Several times we saw people roaming for coffee & water refills. My vegetable omelet sans cheese was rockin and the hash browns were to die for. This restaurant is very warm and welcoming. The staff are incredibly kind and it was easy to sit back and enjoy my meal. My mom and I have celiac disease and we were able to find many delicious foods to eat from the menu. They have gluten free bread available for toast or sandwiches, which gives way more freedom across the menu. I really liked the sandwich I got and the yogurt was great as well. We both enjoyed our meals. The waitress could not have been more attentive or accommodating. I wish I could give 4.5 stars. Came up to Poughkeepsie to visit for the weekend. Went to have breakfast. Found this lovely spot. Couldn't make a reservation. It was first come first serve. Walked inside and gave our name and number for a table for two. It was about a twenty minute wait. They called us when our table was ready. Had a nice window seat by the corner. We were served by a wonderful lady named Karen. She was super nice. We ordered coffee and it kept coming until we said no mas. My wife ordered the breakfast sampler and was able to substitute the sausage and bacon with turkey alternatives. I had the eggs Benedict with homefries and a side of challah French toast. I only wanted to come to this restaurant because I saw another review and I noticed that the owner responded to it, and he had so much pride and respect for his restaurant that I thought, "well, this place must be a town gem." I wasn't even going to post this because even after finishing my plate I didn't say "man, that was delicious." It was more like, "man, I'm full." THEN we asked for desserts and found out they were hiding their ultimate source of pride - BLUEBERRY PIE ($4.50) Guys. Don't come here for a fantastic breakfast. Come here just for the house baked fruit pie. I wanted to rave about it once our waitress brought this to our table. My gosh. It's straight up cold butter with fresh blueberries. So flakey and smooth and even the smell of blueberry is on point. I could feel little cubes of butter that rolled around the flour to make butter pockets in this most perfect crust - the one that holds up when you break in with your fork but melts into semi-moist and not crumbly piece of baking magic in your mouth. And the blueberries - so juicy and generous with portions. The filling itself is not overly sweet or gummy. It is honestly 10/10-would-ask-for-their-recipe-great. TLDR: BLUEBERRY PIE!! Our party of 5 had a great breakfast/brunch here recently. The ambiance, service and food was fantastic. The line was out the door so I was glad I had made reservations. The hot coffee, sausage, bacon, and eggs all well executed and hit the spot. Home fries were standard. My MIL said the blueberry pancakes were fluffy and delicious. I had the gluten free French toast which was also surprisingly good. The only miss was the gluten free pancakes my son ordered. We swapped our dishes half way and the pancakes were extremely dry and crumbly. I think they need to maybe add some buttermilk or extra eggs to moisten it up. This was the only miss. Stopped by Alex's based on the reviews, and this place didn't disappoint. The food was great, and the service top-notch. Michelle is the nicest person we've met in a long time! She was friendly, kind, courteous and super accommodating. She made wonderful suggestions (I had the chicken/avocado salad, my husband had the fish sandwich, and my kids had sunny side up eggs with corn beef hash, a lamb gyro, and the fried fish)! All were great. My daughter doesn't like panko breading but Michelle encouraged her to try it. When my daughter didn't really like it, Michelle replaced her dish and didn't charge us for it! The chicken tenders she ended up with were massive and tasty! Michelle is a true superstar!! I have a very picky eater (no sauces, no cheese, no this, nor that). After reading all the positive reviews it's sad to say that my experience was not the same I was treated very unkindly by the owner of the restaurant then surrounded by the entire staff while me and my girlfriend were just getting up to walk out of the restaurant because we felt uncomfortable there they were very aggressive in saying that we needed to pay though we never ordered anything they also said that I had a mental issue which I do not and him insisting this was just to make me angry I also informed him before the staff encircled me that we have not even ate nor ordered anything but they had the audacity to be so aggressive as to surround me and my girlfriend with about 12 of their staff this was quite embarrassing the mayor of my city was actually eating there at the same time so you could only imagine how much of a scene that was wow to the owner of this establishment I hope you learned a lesson and how to deal with customers leaving your restaurant due to you not having the best social skills I hope no one has to go through this in the future and you have better training methods for you and your workers Sincerely Darren Rugar read more

5 stars for service 4 for the selection Why am I giving this 3 stars? There's always something missing. The food options are great especially for the amount they charge but at times there's 1 too many ingredients in a sandwich or salad and it shows in the number of times I've received an order without everything it was described as including. A turkey sandwich missing the lettuce. A salad missing the cranberries. It's never a more expensive item but it is often an item that would make the difference between a heavy sandwich and a balanced one. I love Alex's people and I will continue to be a patron but I wish things were completed as promised. read more

Amazing find in Poughkeepsie. Everything we had was as fresh, like the kind of fresh you'd imagine finding at some out of the way little place in the middle of midwest farm country but it's on a city block in Poughkeepsie. I had the English Bacon Cheeseburger, my partner had an omelette. She also had rice pudding as a follow-up. If I lived in the area this would be at least a weekly stop, and plan to go back due to frequent visits in the area. Iced tea you could actually see through, in a good way. Not a frequent thing I can write in the Northeast. Extensive menu, if you struggle making a pick maybe review beforehand.
