I rarely write reviews but I had to do with this awesome place! We were out of the city upstate to celebrate my friend's 40th Birthday, and needed a nice place to accommodate our group. The great experience started when I called and a very welcoming lady picked up the phone, she was pleasant, warm and really made me feel welcome. The welcoming attitude, the delicious home made food, and the cozy feeling of this place is why I gave it 5 stars! We were in town for a wedding at the Poughkeepsie Grand/Grandview and rather than having a cold muffin and coffee at the hotel we decided to walk over to Alex's for a real breakfast! The atmosphere was nice! Pleasantly decorated... lively. Seated promptly. Maybe you have to be a regular here? Not sure, but the service was poor. My meal... mediocre. I had the greek omelet, which lacked flavor other than the poor tasting sausage in it. I probably should have gotten a griddle selection? I probably won't be in Poughkeepsie again... but if i am... I'm fairly new to Poughkeepsie and was happy to stumble upon this place while walking around downtown, especially since Poughkeepsie's downtown area needs a LOT of help. But the bathrooms - yikes! My husband and I are Poughkeepsie lifers and today was our first time at Alex's i can see why they get outstanding reviews. We each had an Alex Burger cooked medium well just like we ordered. When I called to ask if they were busy, I got a nice reply that they were not- surprising this gem was so empty for a Saturday morning. Friendly, good portioned breakfast. A good selection of food. I had the french toast with cream cheese filling. Yum. Everyone at the table had a good looking breakfast. The yogurt parfait looked fab, almost like a sundae! I wouldn't say this place was fancy but it has character. Interesting window watching from the restaurant. i would go again and try the parfait... or something else cause it all looks pretty good. I only wanted to come to this restaurant because I saw another review and I noticed that the owner responded to it, and he had so much pride and respect for his restaurant that I thought, "well, this place must be a town gem." So I went on Friday morning - I was starving, fresh off the northeast regional train. We had Eggs Florentine ($10.75) Eggs Benedict ($10.75) and Corned Beef Hash with Eggs ($10). Two cups of coffee ($2 each) and a coffee milkshake ($4.75). The breakfast plates were just average. Drinks were average. Everything was comfortably average. I wasn't even going to post this because even after finishing my plate I didn't say "man, that was delicious." It was more like, "man, I'm full." THEN we asked for desserts and found out they were hiding their ultimate source of pride - BLUEBERRY PIE ($4.50) Guys. Don't come here for a fantastic breakfast. Come here just for the house baked fruit pie. I wanted to rave about it once our waitress brought this to our table. My gosh. It's straight up cold butter with fresh blueberries. So flakey and smooth and even the smell of blueberry is on point. I could feel little cubes of butter that rolled around the flour to make butter pockets in this most perfect crust - the one that holds up when you break in with your fork but melts into semi-moist and not crumbly piece of baking magic in your mouth. And the blueberries - so juicy and generous with portions. The filling itself is not overly sweet or gummy. It is honestly 10/10-would-ask-for-their-recipe-great. TLDR: BLUEBERRY PIE!! I came in early afternoon. The place was super busy but i was greeted pretty instantly. I waited a few minutes for a table but nothing unbearable. I ordered the Eggs Copenhagen. It was super delicious. The home fries were nicely seasoned. The best part when i cut into the yolk it all cake running out. Exactly how a poached egg should be. It was amazing. After celebrating the #JavalySmithWedding the night before in Poughkeepsie and staying at a local hotel, a friend said he wanted an omelette and coffee and suggested we go to Alex's because it was nearby. After conferring with the hotel receptionist, Alex's had her seal of approval, so friends and I went there for brunch. The menu has a wide array of breakfast and lunch options, and there's definitely something for everyone. We started with a hummus plate, which had plenty of hummus for the party of five, though not many pita triangles. It also came with saltines, for some reason. I then ordered the "Avocado, Pesto" panini for my meal and it was fantastic. They didn't skimp on the avocado or sliced black olives, while the roasted red pepper provided a nice foundation. Good bread choice, too, with the focaccia. Prices were very reasonable and service was good. All in all, I'd go again, if I was in the area. And as for my friend from the introduction? I believe he got the coffee, but he did not get the omelette. He got a Greek salad, which looked pretty good. read more

Greeted and welcomed by whom was also our waitress, Denise showed such delight and enthusiasm towards our arrival, as we took our time looking over the many options menu, and extended specials, Denise not only answered all and many of questions, it was quite warming and refreshing to hear her response of how everything is cooked and prepared with much " TLC" with excitement in her voice and a sparkle in her eye. It was obvious she enjoyed her place of work. After taking recommendations, the avacodo pesto melt, a portobello salad, and a bowl of lobster bisque to share, was prompt and nothing short of the rave it was intended!! Tried Alex's Restaurant for the first time. Walked in, place was cozy and quaint...and absolutely packed. Luckily, there wasn't a wait. Menu is extensive with lots of choices for salads, burgers, sandwiches and wraps. I ordered the BLT with a side of cole slaw and fries. Hubby ordered the grilled roast beef and Swiss panini with a side of onion rings. BLT was perfect. Pretty big sandwich. I didn't eat the cole slaw but hubby did and he said it was eh. This is such a busy restaurant! I wish there was more space because it gets very crowded and if you're claustrophobic I certainly wouldn't recommend this place. Parking is a pain in the ass too, but enough with the negativity. The food is very good! Their omelets are decently portioned, and eggs Benedict are so good. Went here for the first time today on my hour lunch break( only 5 mins from my job) I am giving it only two stars because of how my order was handled. I ordered a Tex Mex Salad. This took over 45 mins after my order was taken. People came, order, ate, and paid there check and went back to work before the waitress told me they were out of the taco meat for the salad and would I like a black bean burger in it instead. I told the waitress I would like my salad 20 min ago. I had to text my boss and tell them I would be late. The whole lunch was 1 hour and 15 min. I paid my check of $18.50 for salad & a root beer. REALLLYYYY. I TOLD the manager how displeased I was he said Kitchen was behind. I can't see how. Everyone else was receiving their order on time. No compensation, No can we give a 10% off coupon NOTHING. Will not waste another Lunch here again. read more

We went to this place on a Saturday around 11am. The place was pretty busy. They quickly sat us down at a table. Food came after 10-15min. I had a bagel with salmon, cheese and capers which was okay. The fish tasted fresh, but the cheese was not particularly tasty. My boyfriend felt the same about his stuffed French toast with Nutella and bananas. The deco decor was very promising for a wonderful brunch and the greeting when we entered was friendly. Our waitress was very attentive and even funny. Unfortunately, the food didn't match the scene or service. The pancakes (pumpkin and blueberry) and regular french toast were as dry and tasteless as I've ever had (and they are both favorites of mine). And brace yourself before using the bathroom which was quite simply gross. Perhaps it was not surprising there wasn't a line to get in for Sunday brunch. I ordered a simple chicken Caesar wrap hoping it would be hard to mess that up, they gave me a wrap with lettuce that was Brown and soggy and looked like It had freezer burn, Pretty sure the grilled chicken was microwaved chicken. What really bothered me was that when I asked about the lettuce the chef and the waitress told me that lettuce turns Brown and soggy like that when it touches hot chicken.. My son is new to Marist College and we were looking for brunch and Alex's came up highly rated. My first venture into downtown Poughkeepsie...seems like so much potential...still a little sketchy. BUT the corner restaurant is quaint, pleasant, clean and our server, Michelle, I believe, was so nice and efficient. I had over-easy eggs, with rye toast and home fries...all hot and cooked well! My son had French Toast with nutello and "something else" and he really enjoyed too. The coffee was really hot and tasted fresh. I plan on going as our main stop for breakfast while he is up there.
