Yes for the Detroit-style pizza. No for anything else (except the garlic rolls and calamari, which are decent). I actually prefer their Detroit-style pizza over Thunderbird pies. That may be sacrilegious to some, but I think it is the perfect cold-weather, indulgent, trashy, unpretentious pizza to pair with a beer, sweatpants and a movie. read more

The food was amazingly tasty! Service was on point. It was my first time to try this place. I was there for my birthday dinner. I ordered the Passion martini to drink. It was mixed perfectly and strong. My main meal was the Pasta Pomodoro. Their garlic rolls are huge and delicious. I would recommend a side of marinara to go with the rolls. This restaurant has an intimate amount of space with a small bar at the back and a large flat screen TV hanging overhead the bar. I would highly recommend this place for a nice dinner of 2 looking for smaller and intimate Italian restaurants. It does get crowded during peak dinner times, which is when I was there. I would like to go back and try the pizza as the reviews I read ahead of time stated that their pizza is awesome tasting too. read more

We've been going to Alfonso's for years! It's a favorite for after church which is right down the street. They are consistently very good. I've had many different dishes here. Their pizza is really good but my favorite is their chicken Marsala. The salad dressing is so good that we buy a container to take home. Try this place. They also have very good service! read more

Others have described Alfonso's as mediocre and inconsistent and I would agree. It definitely feels like whoever owns this place is not really managing it closely - based on my experience with the servers. The ambience feels somewhat cozy but dated, though it was always clean. My wife likes the food, but I consistently came away disappointed with my meals (pastas, pizza) especially for the price. It tastes to me like food that you would get at a dinner banquet at a hotel or wedding. That combined with the inconsistent service makes us a big "pass" for me. I do wish it was better though as I live very close, but I would rather spend the same money elsewhere. There are too many good places in Dallas. read more

Throwback, cozy atmosphere and reasonable prices. Memorial Day and most local Italian restaurants were closed so we gave Alfonso's a try. We had our granddaughter and her 13 yo giggling bestie and they wanted pizza. My GD didn't care for her Cheese side (she doesn't really like pizza) but her friend did. Unfortunately, she did not like the sausage & Green Peppers side she ordered. Not Gluten Free so I can only say the cheese was browned well. Hubs ordered the chicken franchese and it was more breading than chicken in a butter garlic sauce versus the dish itself name bears of lemon and butter. I ordered the Gluten Free Penne prepared GF in the Alla Panna sauce. The dish should have been GF without requiring instructions but sadly it wasn't and I'm still having symptoms from it. Other than making me ill, it was also tasteless. Sadly, we won't be returning. read more

We had a nice dinner here recently. The waitstaff is friendly. They have a nice bar area separated from the spacious dining room. They accommodated our daughter with a high chair. The kids ravioli was great. The chicken piccata had good flavor. It came with a side of spaghetti with red sauce, which did not go all that well with the piccata lemon sauce. The piccata also had a little too much garlic flavor for my wife. The pepperoni pizza was great. The 12-inch was enough to bring some home. Great local business so check them out. read more

We have gone to Alphonso's for YEARS. We've always loved it! The atmosphere and the location are great. The food has been consistent through the years. Lately, the food hasn't been good at all. It's like they prep things ahead of time to make it easier on the cooks. The last two times we've ordered lasagna it was like they dished up sauce and small noodles from a container, put cheese on the top and into the oven. It was soupy and just a few noodles in the sauce. Horrible! Instead, I got eggplant parmigiana. For the second time it wasn't good. I think they pre-cook the eggplant and get it out of the steam table or refrigerator. It wasn't freshly cooked! They took old pieces and put sauce and cheese on them and put them in the oven to heat up. This is not high quality Italian food. I would honestly like to get a frozen entree from the grocery store than the food we've had at Alphonso's the last couple of times. The garlic bread is wonderful if you catch it fresh from the oven. If you get it after it's been in the warmer for a long time, it's quite average and not too good. We hate writing this review because Alphonso's has been a go-to Italian restaurant for years. We'll now leave it alone with hopes that things are corrected. We think they are taking short cuts in the kitchen to make things easier on the cooks. Get things corrected or people won't be coming back. It was a Saturday night at prime dining time and there were just a few tables occupied. The service is always good and friendly. Ordered a pizza and repeated several times that there was someone with a serious mushroom allergy and NO MUSHROOMS. The young lady repeated that to me. Got the pizza covered in mushrooms. Called and the young woman said she was sorry...she checked it before we picked it up and she didn't see the mushrooms. Asked the manager or owner to call and he never did. First, it took about 10 min for anyone to come to our table. Then, on the menu, they offer fettuccine Alfredo but with no chicken. If you want chicken, it costs $6 more, bringing the price of that meal to well over $20! Alfredo sauce was watery as was the ranch dressing. But as long as the East Side locals who come here remain content with mediocrity, this place will stay in business. (Not sure what good these Yelp reviews do when posting a narrative description of one's objective evaluation of a restaurant, if it won't even allow you to uncheck the worst part of your experiences at a specific restaurant...which, in this case, was poor service.) This place just sucks! It's always been so so food but lately the sauces are sour and tart like ketchup out of the bottle. Just can't do it anymore. They have been in the neighborhood longer than most but consistently average, nothing to speak of food but since COVID-19 they have really gone down. Food is excellent. There salmon is wild caught and what they do with red fish is the best in Dallas. I am spoiled by their small, thin crust pizza, I get hamburger, pepperoni and onions. Try It! Ingredients are fresh. "Tip," is the head waitress and manager and is the is the best and other servers are always pleasant and efficient. It has an old school, family atmosphere. This is my second time visiting Alfonso's and I must say, this meal was so good that I had to leave a review! The restaurant is a little on the smaller size, the staff will get you seated as quickly as possible. Everyone that I interacted was super nice! I ordered the Chicken Piccata and it came with a salad or soup. I was offered the option for noodles with the piccata sauce or marinara sauce and choose the piccata sauce with the house salad. Everything was delicious! They had $5 Bellinis but were out at the time. The waitress suggested to get one of their house wines since they were half off which was a great substitution. This place is right around the corner from us and we absolutely love it. Every chance we have to splurge on something from here we make sure to do it. My favorites are their white pizzas (ricotta, mozzarella and chicken oh my!) and their Chicken Piccata which has the best piccata sauce ever. It takes everything in my power not to lick the plate clean, although I will use one of their phenomenal garlic rolls (definitely not low-cal, haha) to sweep some of it up. In addition, they have a pretty good wine selection and are very nice inside since they redecorated a while back! This place is wonderful and I've never been dissapointed, sometimes it's a little long to get service because it's a small establishment but it is definitely worth it when you get it! read more

Complimentary garlic rolls were the best part of dinner. The house salad dressing was also good. Very zingy! The house beat the caesar salads at our table. We selected the fried cheese & crab claws. "Meh", pretty much just like any other place. The entrees were below average. The tortellini was bad and removed from the ticket. It was over cooked, dense and hard. The sauce was sticky more than creamy. The waitstaff seemed to be having a hard time, though, the hostess was very friendly. There was a large party who apparently was waiting on orders and had sent a few things back to the kitchen. Two waitresses dropped trays upon delivering them to the table. Our waitress was a sweetheart but the food was just not good. I wouldn't voluntarily return but if I had to go back I would get the house salad as mooch off those garlic knots! Absolutely love this place. Been coming here for 4+ years. Quiet but great ambiance. Like a trip to the Amalfi Coast. Pizza is possibly the best in town. Have always gotten the $10 lunch special with an underrated salad. House vinaigrette with a perfect amount of oregano is bang-on with a pepperocini or two. Pepperoni, Mushroom, Onion and Garlic are is my go-to. Give it a try - it's badass. Chicken Picatta and Lasagna rock too. And I usually turn down the complimentary hot-buttered rolls, but they are made in house and are sinfully good. Service has always been attentive and friendly, but not over the top. worst pizza I've ever had. everyone speaks about their "great Food.". I beg to diiffer. the pizza and salads I ordered were $45+ Never had worse. Bottom crust was burned to the point i couldnt't cut it with a knife. Deep dish was entirely undercooked. 3" of uncooked dough I'm told this is a high quality restaurant pizza but that's not true. This is a nice little old lake highlands neighborhood restaurant. However the food here is pricey and the food is mediocre. They have a good wine selection and it's a great place to get dinner with a bottle of wine. I've had some good yet basic pasta dishes. However I also had a chicken dish that was pretty disgusting. No they were not busy every other restaurant around was full to the walls. FOOD & DRINKS: the wine i ordered was old and had that soured vinegar taste. Ordered a different cheapest pinot noir table wine and it was better. Chicken Venice: the only thing good was the angel hair pasta was right cook texture. I really hate doing this. You know the peel of the onion that was the onion pieces. The bellpeppers were not cooked. The chicken looked like the just used available tenders over cooked hard to chew and those were definitely canned mushrooms. Butter white wine sauce? No that was not even close. My husband's food. Let's start with he chose the chicken marsala b/c the "garlic knots" were dough like actually dough, so not cooked. He thought it would be "safe". He compared to campbells cream of mushrooms soup on over cooked chicken. He stopped eating it, literally because " I am afraid this is going make me sick later" . Okay even safer, his side of spaghetti with marinara. I tried it, no words. It tasted like warmed canned tomato sauce over noodles. Again all noodles were perfect and thats it. His one beer was . The food literally left a bad taste lingering after. All for the affordable price 70.00 I would normally give a place another chance. I slept on this decision to post this. Its a Luby's "italian" restaurant. I am sure the owners are really nice. We will never come back there is just no way to even come close to improving to edible food and decent service. Unfortunately, these guys have hit the skids. I've done for this review what Ive never done before. Looked back at many other reviews to see if I see the same issues and concerns I have. I did find a lot of the same comments. Like, "where is the flavor" or "tasted like it was from a can". they missed on a lot of fronts today. Alla Panna cheese sauce did taste exactly like it was from a can and had no flavor. The salad was swimming in-house Italian dressing and the lettuce was wilted. The garlic rolls were good but enough is enough garlic. Could have killed a vampire. Ease off the garlic. The place was decorated for Christmas but we had to ask the waitress to turn the Christmas tree lights on. The lasagna was good if not a small portion. So, the value is no longer there because at this price point the corresponding quality is gone. Overall I would not go back. Its sad because when in this part of town it used to be our go-to Italian place. I guess everything eventually comes to an end. read more

I enjoy local business and enjoyed the article in Whiterock Weekly. We enjoyed the bread but requested marinara with it. The marina tasted like it was from a can. The salad was clunky and drenched in house dressing. The minestrone soup has no flavor. The tortellini was good! The service is average.
