Campisi's restaurant has been a staple in Dallas for old school Italian fare since 1946. This is the original on Mockingbird and we forgot how cool it is inside. The atmosphere is as authentic as the food and cocktails. There's nothing fancy about Campisi's, but if you enjoy quality Italian food, classic cocktails and solid service this is a perfect spot. You know it's good when you're sitting next to a table of police officers!! The place hasn't changed in almost 80 years. From the classic black and white family photos on the wall to the mini jukeboxes located in each booth, it's like walking back in time. It's been about 20 years since we've been back and it was like finding a new hidden gem. We're glad my father in-law suggested it because it will be placed on our rotation. All our food was great, but I was especially happy with the generous pour they gave me for my Manhattan. (Photo 2). Ignore the bad reviews, I don't understand how anyone could give this place less than 5 stars. I seriously don't. It is so classic and has so much history! The drinks were amazing. Once your eyes adjust to the darkness, you get an old school restaurant experience. Service was good, drinks were kept full. Pizza was awesome (meatball). I know the 'dark' is part of the history of the space, but it would be nice not to see people using flashlights on their phones to read the menu or the check. :) read more

My partners favorite local pizza place. This spot is close to the house. First of all it looks like an old time Italian place, which is pretty much awesome. You walk in and the lights are low and mini jukeboxes at each booth. Little red candles at each table. They have a few rooms here you can rent for functions. The hostess was very polite and friendly also seated us really quick. We didn't sit long before we were greeted by the waitress. We had another event we are headed to and told her our time concerns and she said no worries. My partner ordered her favorite toasted ravioli's and wow the sauce was delicious and ravioli's knocked it out the park ! She order her custom pizza and I had the meat lovers. This is such a cool place with interesting history and good food! The storefront may not look special (aside from the "Egyptian" sign), but the inside has a nice classic pizerria atmosphere. The staff was super nice and attentive. The bruschetta was some of the best I've ever had! My partner and I devoured a chicken spinach alfredo pizza and we would do it again, it was great! ----- Critics Review ----- The last 3 times here over 4 years has been horrible. Failed again tonight. I was with a friend from high school who was in town and he wanted to go to the Mockingbird location because that was the only one in the 70s-80s. My head sank because the Lovers Lane location is perfect!!! I told the waitress specifically, "an all the way pizza, minus mushrooms, triple garlic and extra crispy - so the toppings are toasted. I do not want the toppings in the center like you normally do - I want all toppings to the edge of the crust." Ugh, again - a total failure. Look at the photo! Toppings only in the center. The outer 2 inches is only cheese and garlic. You can barely see any salami or Italian sausage anc onions are everywhere. Almost under cooked - no where close to crispy! (A machine could do better!!) Of course being with my friend I could not complain. So I went to my normal location (Lovers Lane), showed the manager (Derick) the pizza Mockingbird gave me. He knows me and what I like (as does 1/2 of the staff!) He was equally appalled. I ask him to take a photo and send it to the Mockingbird manager and share my story. And throw it in the trash! I choked down 2 baby slices only to be tell my friend I has a late lunch as was full. (Mockingbird - I'LL NEVER GO BACK - EVEN IF YOU OFFER FREE FOOD FOR LIFE!!!!!!!!) Of course Derick offered to make me a replacement pizza - and I refused twice. But when he added a free bourbon and coke... I broke down and said ok - but only a small. I'd heard great things about this restaurant, especially that it has an old fashioned Italian restaurant aesthetic. As soon as I saw the red padded door at the entrance, I knew I was going to step into a time machine. Sure enough, I walked into a DARK restaurant with red decor. I was charmed! Since it was crowded in the restaurant at the time, it was pretty loud. We stood at the host's stand for a while before a staff member seated us. Our waiter seemed stretched thin. He did his best, but he had to tend to so many different tables. I had to ask another waiter for silverware & napkins. However, our waiter did check in and made sure we had what we needed. The food was okay. The dinner salad was way over dressed, the bread was hard and my Marsala bland. The portion sizes are enormous, so you will not leave hungry. Overall, Campisi's was a great experience while visiting Dallas, but probably not a place I'd return to. read more

Horrible. Been going all my life. We ordered the veal piccata and it was inedible. The veal was so tough you could barely cut it much less chew it. Pure gristle. We all agreed that Campisi's just makes one huge vat of spaghetti for the day and the slops a basic cream sauce on which they might squeeze some lemon juice on and throw on six capers. There is NO CREAM in a true white wine butter Piccata reduction and the thickening would come from the flowered bits from the breaded and sautéed cutlet. To make matters worse our server just almost threw stuff on the table. We had to ask for silverware. Finally the drinks are terrible. One of us ordered a cosmopolitan and a maraschino cherry was added like a Shirley Temple. C's has become a cheesy theme park now. read more

Service was good and pretty fast. The lasagna was excellent. We were not crazy about the meatballs but I don't like sausage in mine. The spaghetti was very good as was the eggplant Parmesan according to my daughter. The pizza with everything on it was very good. The Alfredo sauce tasted really good but it separated. The bread was really hard on the outside. The pictures and decor is so old school a lot of kids won't have any idea who those people are. But I had old parents so I know. Since this place already has so many reviews, I'm going to just hit the high spots: I have been to the Mockingbird location 5 or 6 times in the past three months. Service has always been very good. If you're not familiar with the pork chop, you're missing out. I almost hate to recommend it as I consider it a solid value for the price and you won't go hungry. It comes with the house salad which I love, and garlic wilted spinach which is awesome. Sometimes with a larger party we get a small Italian sausage and black olive with jalapeno pizza as an appetizer and I love the thin crust! Delicious! Atmosphere in the central dining room with the bar and the Club room are both awesome, vintage Campisi's vibe. The big room to the left is ok, sort of a lite version of the other rooms. The food and service was really good which made me happy although I do have to say the prices were a bit High, they do have lunch pricing which made it a little bit more palatable. All in all I enjoyed myself and like I said the food was good so I was happy when I left. If I was going to make a complaint it would be that all the menus we were handed were dirty. Which isn't too big of a deal I guess but the reason they were probably dirty is because it was so dark in the restaurant that the waitresses probably couldn't see that they were dirty. Now it being dark isn't necessarily a complaint, it's just not my personal preference. We shared a Margherita pizza that was perfectly made. I ate a meatball appetizer which could have served as a full meal, and it was delicious. The food is always to my liking. I eat at the Mockingbird location when I'm catching a movie at the Angelika at Mockingbird Station. The atmosphere is much like an old speakeasy, dark and quiet. We'll be back. read more

I am very disappointed; I always threaten to not return, but I keep coming back because I have loved their food since 1975. Tonight was, again, a disappointment dinner. No cheese, no peppers, no bread, and worse of all, no salad which their menu shows that one comes with the combination plate, but not in my bag for me to enjoy. Yes, it's a simple thing to forget, but not for me. I usually live a 4-5 rating, but I cannot do so tonite. I don't know why I keep filling out these surveys since no one ever contacts me or calls/email's me. It's so sad and VERY disappointing. Why doesn't mgt @ least respond or say "we are sorry"? I am so upset and no one cares, @ least not @ Campisi's! It's very hurtful to eat here for so many years and no one cares enough just to apologize. We were in the area and it was around dinner time so we decided to check this place out. We had been to other locations but the ambience and history of this location had us intrigued. It did not disappoint. It was like stepping back in time. the decor and booths where straight from the 50s (LOVED IT!) place was packed on a Saturday evening around 5:15. (we joined the wait list while in route via yelp app!) We got seated on arrival and ordered a house wine. (It was delish!) We each got a plate with a salad and bread. They were lovely people who made you feel like one of the family. Tonight my family dined in the famous circular booth in the corner. The dark and romantic atmosphere is unparalleled. It's been too long since I've satisfied my need for a "Campisi's fix". It's been missing in my life since a move to Waco - and what a shame. The pizza here is life changing, and the little side salads they serve - don't even get me started. What has happened to a former Dallas staple? A place I've come for 20 years with family and friends, blaming their main dining room service on a private event in the Jack Ruby room! ON A SUNDAY WITH 4 empty tables in the main dining room. To start, we ordered an ice tea and a modelo and a simple MEATBALL APPETIZER. Easy right? Waited 20 minutes to get drinks to the table. Then, after sipping on my beer, the waiter comes over to tell me slyly gave me the wrong beer and then proceeds to take the almost full glass off my table. And then.... STILL PUTS IT ON THE BILL FULL PRICE. Meatballs took 45 minutes to show up on table. We were ready to walk out the door. Clearly forgot our order. Next up, we ordered a medium pizza and a pasta dish and it took an hour to come out. Again, blaming their main dining restaurant and private event. Mr. Campisi, if I were you I would put an emphasis on keeping the legend of the Egyptian alive instead of letting it rot away with brain dead service and folks that blame the establishment. And it was LOUD. picked a booth over on the left. We figured that it would be less noisy than sitting in the midst of everyone. Our server was Mark. He did excellent job. I had the mushroom pizza which was delicious. My husband had the sausage sandwich which was more than he could eat. Of course we took the leftovers. Wow, what a great place. My wife and I came down from far North Texas for a concert at the Granada. I was looking for someplace fun to eat and saw Campisi was around the corner and was an original location. Not really having a clue what it was like outside of great food reviews, we walked right into the past. From the moment you walk through the padded door, you are transported back to the age of dark, red booth seating and old-time bars. We didn't have RSVP but we also showed up at 5 pm on a Saturday so it was not yet full. We were seated in what used to be the Club, an area that required an invitation to come in. As you can see from the pictures very old school and just as dark as the old bar we entered. We both started with the Tuacargarita which is a house special. For apps, we went with meatballs and garlic bread. Both amazing. Mark, our waiter brought us small salads and house bread, which was good. I had chicken parm with Spaghetti and my wife had the crab claws as her entry. Both of us fully loved our choices. The crab claws were in a fairly large bowl with a lot of small crab claws in A broth. Neither of us had room for dessert, but we did leave wanting to come back. So good and a great time. read more
