Let's be real, it's hard to find restaurants nowadays that know how to cook the scallops properly..... 2. Octopus, the owner was very accommodating about ordering just this dish from the tasting menu. Oh my, the octopus was so tender, probably the best one yet 3. Fried quail was tender, and they used Louisiana style hot sauce to spice it up a bit which was much needed! 4. Gnocchi, it wasn't like a typical gnocchi you'd find at an Italian restaurant, the chef paired it with some beans, the kale added some refreshing touches so it wasn't as heavy 5. Wagyu confit, here's where the Asian fusion comes in with the daikon and bokchoy, hmm not too crazy about this one though... but don't get me wrong. Wow, the food here is DELICIOUS! Pan Seared Scallops: Although it was a little on the chewy side, I loved the flavor. Note that this dish only comes with 2 scallops. Crispy Hen of the Woods Mushroom: This was my least favorite only because I thought it lacked a little flavor compared to the rest of the dishes. It's sort of like mushroom tempura! Niman Ranch Pork Belly: I loved this dish! The pork belly was extremely tender and flavorful. MY FAVORITE. Winter Citrus Cake: The first bite can be a little sour, because this dessert is made with grapefruit but trust me, it's addicting. Malted Chocolate "Kulfi": I wasn't a big fan of the Kulfi because it was way too sweet for my taste, and trust me, I have a big sweet tooth! I probably won't order this dessert again. They do not disappoint! The seating is limited, so be sure you make a reservation. The ambiance is charming and intimate and the service is excellent. They are very friendly & attentive, without being overbearing. My favorite go-to truly is the sea bass. It's always done just perfectly, with amazing flavor. But my friends had equally delicious dishes. My friend (with one of the pickiest palettes that I know, a TRUE foodie), was so pleased with the rib eye that she ordered another one to take home to her husband! Everyone was truly pleased with their respective dishes...3 of the 5 of us got a vegetarian dish that was amazing! The name escapes me now, but posted a picture of it! Meant to write this review months ago. We absolutely love All Spice and go here for special occasions or a special "date night." In the late summer, we rented out the restaurant to celebrate a "special birthday" and cannot say enough about our experience and the service. Shoshana worked closely with us to ensure the experience was perfect. In addition to creating a very special menu for our guests, including some of our favorite dishes from years back and vegetarian and vegan choices, she ensured that the atmosphere was perfect, allowing us to add our own personal touches. Had a yummy dinner here for our Anniversary. There's a option of 3 or 5 course. We chose the 5 course. Go 5 course unless you don't eat much. I got most of what the waiter suggested and enjoyed all of it. Scollop, salmon, cauliflower, fish plate and chocolate dessert. I have been nearby here so many times for hot yoga n kids dance class and never knew about this place. So I went here with my man on a dinner date. This places takes reservation so make sure to do that in advance. The ambience is so chique yet very cozy and gives you an intimate feeling. I love their interiors and really depicts colorful, elegant artistic touch :) we were with the overall service and loved the food that we ordered. Speaking about the food, I think their menu gets a refresh every now and then that you shouldn't be surprised if you don't see a potato croquette on the menu. We go a complementary tomato soup shot to start with followed up our ordered glass of wine and chaas lassi that was kickass. I ordered for carrot eggplant fritters while my husband ordered for fish taco and both were toooo good! The portion is good for a person if they are hungry. Otherwise it could be hard to finish a plate. Now, our entrée was a magic and it melted into our mouth. We ordered for butternut squash and duck. I love their food styling and that makes me happy! I felt that there butternut squash was a little bigger for me after having had the appetizer therefore had to take it togo and it didn't obviously taste the same the next day. The icing on the cake was their dessert menu from which we ordered kulfi with dark chocolate and caramel. Trust me that made my evening. Especially being a sweet tooth if was a delight for me. Given the type of cuisine and the location, it is no surprise that All Spice is one of the more affordable Michelin starred restaurants with several starters in the $9-$12 range and most entrees in the mid-$20s. All Spice is not a tasting menu spot but more of a 3-course restaurant. They do an amuse bouche and it was a garlic and sourdough soup with croutons on my visit. The soup was very thin, but it had a decent flavor. I started with the lavender and cumin scallops, which sat on top of a bacon and black cardamon potato sauce. The scallops were nicely seared and moist (pretty tender though not as soft as what you will find at some upscale restaurants). Michelin star in San Mateo and Indian fusion to boot! Overall, a good quality restaurant. The service is exceptional and was probably the best part of the whole dining experience. We started with two appetizers: the pork belly and the octopus a la plancha. Both were quite good and started the meal off to a great well after having to wait a bit. We had a late reservation and had to wait until other diners had finished. The appetizers were delicate, beautifully plated, and service was polite and attentive without being intrusive. For entrees, we had wagyu, lamb, and boar. All were good but I can't say it had a "wow" factor. Don't get me wrong, this is solid good food which is exceptionally prepared and should be appreciated. But I'm always in dire need of that "wow" effect and for me, it didn't have that. For dessert, I have no idea what we had. Due to the long wait in between courses, our server brought us a medley of desserts to share on the house. There were 3 or 4, I think and it was ALL outstanding. Yes, I sound like a broken record but it's another great restaurant addition to the city of San Mateo. I've been excited to try All Spice for two reasons: One, the the head chef here previously worked at Amber India and two it was located in an old Victorian house. Stunning torquise walls and a warm fire place greets you when you walk into the main dining area. Food and service here was impeccable! It really was modern Indian cuisine done at it's best. I decided to go with the lamb chops and was not disappointed. Meat was cooked to perfection and flavor was spot on. Our waiter was very attentive and gave us honest suggestions. They even gave us another dessert because they could tell we weren't happy with our first choice. Awesome service! I was so lucky to be tricked by my gf to come here for dinner last year. I actually didn't know that this was somewhat of a fancy modern Indian restaurant and was expecting more of the traditional Indian fare. Regardless, I was not disappointed to find that this cute white table cloths dining room was more on the casual side and served some spectacular flavors both familiar and foreign to my palette. I also recently found out it was a Michelin star restaurant as well which elevates my review for this place because it was such a "cheap" Michelin star restaurant. (DISCLAIMER: please realize when I say cheap, I don't mean its actually cheap, it's quite pricey and we were very spendy here, but on par with other Michelin star restaurants this place has way more value for money, hence cheap). I really enjoyed their selection of distinctively different beers from Japanese to Pacific Islander / South Asian. They also had a great wine selection and I think we shared a bottle. I'm starting to lose my faith in Michelin because this place does not deserve a star. The entrees are average at best. The appetizers were really good. We had the ceviche (daily special), eggplant ravioli (daily special), and the pork belly. The ravioli was the best of the lot - it had a firm shell and a yolk that oozed out along with cheese when it was cut into. The ceviche was normal and the pork belly was - eh, I guess I got tired of pork belly like 5 years ago. For the entree, I had the duck breast which was served really quite rare. It had a very strong metallic taste to it which I did not like. To be fair, I'm sure this is how duck breast should taste and I should have ordered something not as iron-y. My brother's wagyu beef (daily special) was about as good as any other steakhouse (meaning, good but not great). My mom's wild boar was pretty much a pork curry and the chunks of meat were quite dry. I hate leaving a bad review for the place, but I think I should be honest. Me and my boyfriend were looking for an place late Saturday night. I made a mistake of looking at reviews only when looking up "Indian" and "San Mateo". First off, this place does NOT serve Indian food - it might have some Indian influences but that's just it. The service was great, the waiters were friendly and did not leave us hanging for long. The location - re-purposed cute old cottage house. It was different from most other venues. The food - it was very good. I ordered scallops appetizer and my boyfriend got the pasta dish. My biggest issues were the prices and the portion sizes. I mean, occasionally I will pay $18 for a good meal but "a good meal" connotes enough food to be full. Granted, I ordered an appetizer (so you might say "what else did you expect?") but my boyfriend's portion (who ordered an entree) was just a teeeeny bit larger than mine. So when I got a huge plate with two scallops in the middle of it, I was pretty mad. They were large and very tasty scallops but please show me ONE adult who feels full after eating that. And the reason for me ordering the appetizer? It was the second least expensive option on the menu. I wish All Spice would not cater to the stereotype that fancy restaurants have to serve food that would fill a shot glass or two. I believe the talented chefs working there can come up with something more "pedestrian" for people like me. So my point is, if you have significant extra cash, please DO go to All Spice and enjoy - order an appetizer, and entree, dessert, some wine - it will be a lovely $100+ dinner for one person. I had been wanting to come here to check out what everyone is bragging about. Well, I didn't have a good impression when I first walked in....and here's my take. Decor: for me (just me), I don't like low ceiling and tight places - I feel claustrophobic. A sample of my taste on the decor would be something like Nemea in downtown San Jose, or Ruth's Chris in downtown Seattle, etc. if I want to eat in a home-like atmosphere, I would gather stay home and eat since my home is decently clean and tidy. But, if a house is converted into a restaurant establishment, I hope the owner would take a look at Palacio Restaurant in Los Gatos for ideas; they did a great job on that one. Service: very nice and friendly. Our waiter Carlos is very accommodating. Just FYI, it's not like Alexander's scale of service. Food: Well, I like their Passionfruit Lassi and the Lamb Mouse complimentary from the Chef - that's it!! Maybe all the hypes from these Yelpers build up my expectations and sometime that can be back fired. Now, if you can't take fishy dishes, stay away from the octopus appetizer there. I can take fishy dishes just fine, but even that dish is way too much for me. Also, it got some sandy taste (here and there) to it - YUCK!! ... don't like biting into sandy stuff! Look out for the sign. Even though it's address is on El Camino, the restaurant is located in an alley way behind two shop fronts on El Camino. In short, this is how my experience went. 30 min wait after reservation, small and cramped waiting room, had to stand for 15 mins, server spilled beer all over my fiance, no comp for wet pants, food was less than spectacular. Here is my review on the food: Indian bread fritter "Ma Mere" (app) - best thing I ate. All the favors complemented very well and the bread was fried to perfection. I hate beans, but I liked them in this dish. Blistered shishito peppers (app) - Skip, the soy sauce overpowered the whole dish. Lemon ricotta dumplings - Skip, Flavors were good, presentation is nice, but dumplings were way too dense. Pan-seared seabass - Skip, the fish was too salty and something in the sauce left a bitter taste in my mouth. I couldn't even finish my meal. Chocolate terrarium - worth trying. Very nice presentation and flavors were there. Nothing too spectacular though. It's worth a try just to get the cool glass. Verdict: All Spice ruined my expectations of fine Indian dining. I highly suggest going to Rasa in Burlingame instead. They deserve their 1 Michelin star. For the amount of money I paid to eat at All Spice, I expected better food, and better service. I have been meaning to check out All Spice but thanks to my dear friend for hosting his wife's surprise birthday dinner where we all had a great time. We were party of 20 and they seated us in two tables in one of the rooms. Ambiance was cozy and decor was beautiful. First off this cute little restaurant is in a house right off the busy El Camino real. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and has a cozy at home feel. I want to give this place five stars for the amazing appetizers and desserts but some of the entrees didn't impress as much as the appetizer. But let's start with the good. We ordered the pork belly, tuna crudo, and Indian bread fritter. The pork belly was perfectly crisp and melted in your mouth as you ate it. Probably one of the best pork belly dishes I've ever eaten. The crudo was equally delicious and was complimented by the other bright flavors on the plate. Lastly we had to try the Indian bread fritter. This was probably the least favorite of the three but honestly it was extremely delicious so saying it is your least favorite is like saying you son are my least favorite child. Now to the entrees. My dad and step mom ordered the Aab-e-gosht dish which www a stewed lamb. And honestly for being a stewed dish I thought it would have more flavor. It was way way way better as leftovers the second and third day. Dishes like that need time to develop the complex flavors and I think it missed the mark. I ordered the sea bass with baby bok choy. Man was that thing good. Perfectly cooked and flavorful. My parents were upset they didn't get my dish instead of theirs. Lastly the dessert. Chocolate terrarium. Yum. Other chocolate some thing. Really enjoyed our dinner at Allspice! They have made their outdoor dining area cozy, it feels like a "real" dining experience to the point that I forgot I was technically in a parking lot. Had a delicious dinner here for a birthday party with 20 people. For being a restaurant with a Michelin star, the owners and staff were super nice and accommodating (not at all stuffy like other places might be). They didn't kick us out even after everyone else had left, they ran separate checks for all the couples, and the food was excellent. This is definitely more of a French / American cuisine with Indian spices & influence than a straight Indian restaurant. The dishes were really innovative, unique, and flavorful. We had a prix fixe since we were a large party, so I wasn't able to pick from the entire menu, but was able to get a good feel for what the dishes are like. I'd definitely recommend getting an appetizer and entree since there are not too many carbs and the portions are a little bit on the small side. I wasn't full after my appetizer and entree, but after the dessert, I was satisfied. Since my boyfriend was with me, we got to try 2 sets of appetizers, entrees, and desserts. Pumpkin and fresh fennel dosa with goat cheese and roasted-garlic tomato chutney ($13) - This was delicious; the dosa was a bit on the small side (and the price is steep for something so small), but it was crispy and cooked perfectly. Jerusalem artichoke and goat cheese soup ($9) - Delicious, thanks to the goat cheese and/or cream. Good flavor, not overly heavy, and the fried sunchoke at the bottom was delightful. Would recommend this since you can't just get artichoke soup anywhere. I wanted more when I was done. Slow Roasted Venison ($29) - Slow roasted venison, farro risotto, braised ciopollini onion, wild mushrooms and grapes. Don't leave without getting this dish. Everyone that ordered this in our party loved it. The meat was tender and flavorful. I don't typically like or eat red meat that often, and this was great. There was not too much farro risotto, so it's basically just meat. Mint and purple potato gnocchi ($18) - Handmade dumplings, sunchokes, kuri squash and brussels sprouts with cardamom brown butter and meyer lemon gastrique. This was good, but nothing exceptional. I think there were 4 gnocchi dumplings, and I couldn't taste the mint in them. I felt like I was eating a dish of potatoes and root vegetables - good, but nothing I couldn't stir fry or bake at home. The seasoning was good, and I could definitely taste the Indian influence here. Dark chocolate kulfi ($7) - I love chocolate, especially dark chocolate. I wanted to lick my plate clean but figured I shouldn't, given I was at a birthday party and it was a Michelin star restaurant. Had I been in my own home, I would have, it was that good. I don't know how they made this, but the texture was creamy, it was not too sweet, and I loved every bit of this. One of the best desserts I've had. Home-made ice cream ($7) - We had vietnamese coffee, mint, and persimmon. Was good, but I prefer the chocolate (can you tell? ;)) Overall, a great experience here and I'll be back for more. As I understand, this place has morphed over the years from a purely Indian Restaurant to one more global with Indian roots. You can see this with the menu choices (paneer starter, strip loin main course). You can have your meal as a 3, 4, or 5 course Prix fixe dinner with some upgrades. Each dish my wife and I had was a visual treat and an amazing blend of flavors and textures. A delightful Amuse Bouche to start and a small petit four at the end. A nice selection of wines by the glass. The service was excellent and friendly. Our only complaint was the overall meal was served too quickly. The restaurant was not crowded and there were no patrons waiting for a table. This is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 read more
