Moved to the neighborhood in the spring and I've tried AlMar twice; once for evening drinks and once for brunch with out of town family. Both times were outside. The drinks were good, had a good time with my date. But when I came with my family for brunch, it was not great. A few of the cutlery and plates weren't clean, the service was just okay (our waiter came so rarely we had to flag people down a lot, and we were the only group outside), the person taking+setting our plates was not rude by any means but he was uncomfortable communicating with us and uncomfortable looking at us in the eyes, which then made us feel uncomfortable. Could have been easily been taken as a rude attitude. My parents both got lentil soup (the only soup available that day) bc it was chilly outside, and it was so bland and flavorless. Former talents from Brooklyn Heights' Noodle Pudding, another one of my favorites and definitely worthy of a visit, bring their genuine sense of hospitality and passion for honest Italian fare to Dumbo. There's something for everyone, and while the menu doesn't change a whole lot from day to day, I've still been coming here 3-4 times per month for the last 3 years. It's that good. Start with a rotating selection of cheeses and cured meats, then move on to Alfredo's Meatballs. For your main dish, you can't go wrong with any of the handmade pastas, and definitely try the prociutto-stuffed pork chop or whole Bronzino if they're on the menu. Vegetarians out there will be impressed by the Kale salad, which completely blew this die-hard carnivore away. The dessert menu doesn't contain anything you haven't had before, but the Tiramisu and Tartufo are among the best in the city (in my humble opinion). Where do I begin? I've been coming for years, but not after tonight! The pasta I ordered without cheese arrived WITH cheese. After politely reminding our server that I asked for it without cheese, it was brought out a second time with the cheese half heartedly scraped off. Then the bill arrived..Three items were mid priced- in their favor. When I complained to the waitress she was so rude! Me: "I don't understand why there is a charge to plate the pasta that was incorrectly served to us?" Server: "I don't understand why you are angry about this?!" While I don't blame the server for my cheese incident, I do blame her for over charging us. She could have been apologetic, but instead she was extremely argumentative. Very disappointing. read more

The lasagna was good with some good flavor from the tomato/marinara sauce...it was topped with a good amount of cheese that made it even better. The burger was solid - a nice, juicy burger that was cooked as requested at medium. The service here was attentive...I think the staff did a good job of taking care of everyone despite the busy lunch atmosphere. read more

This is not just a restaurant. It's like it's own country. Alfredo the chef is a master magician--he amazes us with consistently adding new, tasty pastas , savory sauces, fresh meats and seafood, and main courses--each sourced from different regions in his native Italy. He's an honorary sommelier with his fine palate for Italian wines. Marcello his restaurant partner makes The Whole thing come together by consistently hiring wonderful waiters and waitresses, and knowing just how to add the right soupçon of warmth to make this orchestra right! Great food, great service, great atmosphere in a tough time. It's no wonder my wife calls it her "second kitchen". I can afford to eat just about anywhere I want--and I'd rather eat at Almar than anywhere! It's great to be part of the family and I highly recommend it! read more

Had an early dinner last Tuesday. What a cute joint. We had a cocktail each, both super yummy and well made. Then the bruschetta with ricotta, honey and truffle parmesan. Not your traditional bruschetta but very delicious. I liked that it was on a country style soft crusty bread. Then I had the risotto cake and my fiance the barley salad. The risotto cake was so inventive and delicious. I will definitely try to make this at home. The barley salad was delicious too, I do wish it was warm, but very nice. I found them both a little under seasoned, but still delicious. Then we had dessert, lemon sorbet and the hazel chocolate torte. They were a great combination. The torte so rich and the sorbet tart and refreshing. We will definitely go again. read more

AlMar surprised me. I'm usually not a fan or skeptical of "New American" local rustic organic places. The dishes sound good, but come up short of anything very tasty, fresh, and overpriced. Coworkers rave about their coffee ($1.75 strong & fresh, I've decided) & food. AlMar's located in a block of hip DUMBO of shiny storefront corporate windows. But inside, it's filled with rustic furniture, a carefully curated antique so Brooklyn finds. Once you get past that potential pretensioness, you realize that the employees are incredibly nice, there's 2 giant communal tables (which always seem to be filled by families or local companies meeting over lunch), and Most importantly- the food is Excellent! The price point is very good for the portions and quality of ingredients. During a brunch meeting, I got the Breakfast Sandwich ($12- eggs were fluffy, the bacon was generously sized, the avocado & cheese on it was super fresh, & the brioche bun soft). It came with some mixed greens. I only got through 3/4 of the sandwich. Recently, had a Literally, 2hr lunch there. I had the 2 Eggs over Polenta ($12). It was a 6" block of finely milled corn flour (best I've had so far) layered with bits of cheddar, tomato, avocado, and eggs (requested over easy), & surrounded by a maot of sautéed spinach. Only got through 3/4 of this as well. Awesome, Fresh, Delicious. I've tried co-worker's Beet & Goat Cheese Salad, Artichoke Tart, & Farro Salad with mint. All were great. We ended the meal with a tiramisu (in a martini cup) & blueberry panna cotta (in a cup, blue-infused & some berries on top). Both were def cream-heavy, but tasty & apparently made in-house as well. I wouldn't mind trying their panino & soup Lunch Combo & apparently they carry Blue Sky Bakery muffins (carrot with flakes coconut in the middle). Get their to-go coffee (although it's a bit if a wait) instead of that Starbucks down the street, please! Great place in the neighborhood compared to Dumbo Kitchen, not sure about Superfine. We have eaten at Al Mar in person for a nice family dinner (went early and its kid friendly) but recently we ordered takeout due to COVID. Really impressed with the baby pork ribs with mashed potatoes, it was a complete meal at a reasonable price, and the ribs were fall off the bone amazing! Mashed potatoes were really good too. Wife got the eggplant parm, which she thought was good but could have used a little more crispy crust. Will definitely be going back, this is one of the few places were we felt the takeout was almost as good as eating at the actual restaurant! read more

Updating my previous review for service and food quality during our (4 of us) second brunch trip. 15 minutes after placing the table's order our waitress came by the table to let us know that the kitchen was out of roast beef and that one of us would need to choose another option. We did, but in the end the wait for the food was just not worth it. Three of the dishes looked and tasted like they had been sitting under a heat lamp for the 15 min it took to make the new dish. The staff does not seem to know the menu very well and provided incorrect information about menu items, of which we did not realize until our dishes were served and it was too late. This place is in a great spot which is why they will continue to be busy, but the service/quality and cash-only requirements are major hits to Almar as a whole. read more

The service was beyond excellent. Everyone from the hostess to our waiter were super friendly and super attentive. Our waiter (Josh, I believe) was perfectly attentive and always managed to check in on us at just the right time without being intrusive at all. We ordered and shared the baby octopus appetizer which was simply amazing. It comes warm over slightly lower than room temperature potatoes and cold, ceviche like onions and olives right under that. The combination of all the textures and flavors was simply incredible. We loved this dish and wish there was more. It's easy enough for 1 person to eat it all, but since we both ordered pasta dishes for our main course we figured we could share it and it ended up being just right. I had the linguini special which included seafood and it was amazing. The chef took equal amounts of shrimp, mussels and some squid and distributed them evenly across the dish. The portions were just right. To end, we ordered the Tiramisu and it was divine. It came in a martini glass which was a sexy touch, and it was rich, delicious and just enough for both of us to share. All in all, it was a 4.5 star experience. I took .5 of a star off because the music was so random. We heard some salsa and merengue and although we like both, we feel that the music should reflect the cuisine as well as the dishes and inspiration of the overall restaurant. Decor and Interior true to the Brooklyn vibe. Baby and kid friendly; great for large groups (with a reservation). Brunch menu options are loaded with seemingly fresh ingredients. What we ordered: - Smoked salmon panino - so flavorful and fresh! Loved the combination of the smoked salmon with the beets and the avocado. Loved it on the pumpernickel bread as well. - Egg in a cloud - neat presentation, however if you're hungry opt for something a bit more filling (like the egg toast) - Egg Toast - a definite stand out! This dish was absolute perfection. Cooked with truffle oil however wasn't too overwhelming. The asparagus was a perfect complement. Having something green on your plate after eating essentially cheese baked on top of an amazing brioche makes you feel better ;) Polenta with sausage - This dish was average. Polenta by itself was flavorless but was better eating it with the sausage. Overall you won't feel gross and heavy after brunching here. I will be back to try their dinner! read more

Visiting from the AZ and after 7 hours of walking and going over the Brooklyn bridge, we needed to get some drinks. Our waitress was super awesome and friendly and made the perfect suggestions!! My love ordered the Classico half sandwich with the caprese salad and I ordered the half salmon with the shrimp salad...OH. MY. GOODNESS. GRACIOUS! My group came in for a late lunch after a walking tour. We were a group of 9. We were taken to a long table that seats 12. There were 4 people already at the table. Just when we were seating ourselves down the floor manager told us he forgot there was a reservation for 15 people and they needed that table. What didn't make sense was there was only 8 seats there. Anyhow we ended up seating at that table because what the floor manager said didn't make sense. And they didn't chase us away. So fast forward and it's now about 10 minutes later, a waitress came with table settings for our group. We told her to hold off since we weren't sure and were awaiting the floor manager to let us know if we could sit there. The waitress told us the party of 15 was most likely no show since they have passed the 15 minutes mark. Doing math, I guess the reservation was at 2 and it was by then almost 2:25 pm. Now onto the dining experience. The service was SUPER slow. The food, when it arrived, was delicious. We each ordered a different dish and everyone was happy. I had ordered egg purgatory with someone Des of bacon. When I didn't see the bacon come out with the dishes I asked the waiter who told me it would be coming out since we got our dishes. He never checked the kitchen (something I would have done as a server) about the order. When I was almost done with my dish, I flagged him down again and told him I want to cancel the bacon since I'm almost done with my meal. I wanted to eat the bacon with my eggs and toast. He seemed surprised they I did not get the bacon. He did t check for me or with me after my first inquiry. This time he just said he had put in the order. A few minutes later he brought me my bacon. It was delicious but I had to eat it by itself since I've finished my eggs and toast. M They need to work on organization and expedition of the food. Minus one star. The other issue was they only have ONE bathroom. YES. A big place with Ine unisex bathroom. There is always a long line of 2-5 people waiting. Thank goodness the waiting area is huge. We all wonder why, with all the space (and there were 3 other "rooms" in the space, why only one bathroom. That's really a big planning. Minus another star. read more

Went for a friday night dinner with my girl, and it was a really fantastic meal. This place has an adorable, cozy yet chic ambiance. Didn't have to wait for a table, and the noise level was the perfect level of low conversational buzz and music. We had a cocktail each to start (the something something saint, essentially a dolled up margarita, and the italian sour). Both were very good, high marks. Then we shared the string bean salad, the mushroom tagliatelle, and the 1/2 roast chicken, and we both had a glass of wine with dinner. Service was fantastic, and dishes came out in traditional leisurely timing, instead of being rushed or the dishes piled on our table all at once. Really one of the best meals I've had since moving to vinegar hill -- this place easily outclasses Superfine, and beats Vinegar Hill House at it's game. There was also a movie playing on the back wall, which was fun to drop into every now and then. Service is totally perfect, swift, low pressure, charming and attentive. I can't honestly think what this place could do better. Even the bill with two cocktails, three glasses of wine, a salad, a pasta, and a main, plus one shared desert was very reasonable. We were still hungry so we decided to stop in. When you come inside it is a rustic dark feel. They also had a old twilight show on the wall playing. Very unique! I started off with the italian lemondae cocktail (gin based). It was good, not too strong or sweet. ust enough to get a good buzz on. My friend had ordered the spritz. It was kind of too sweet for us since it is prosecco based. But the presentation was great! They give you sourdough bread with olive oil to much on. I liked how our server even asked us if we wanted more haha. For my main course I went with the tagliatelle bolognese with boar i believe. It was good. My friend got a pesto pasta with shrimp. Hers was much better than mines. The only reason why I am knocking off a star is because I felt like my server was not happy every time he came over to us. Came here for Saturday brunch. The atmosphere is relaxing and chill and the food was pretty good. We started with the ricotta bruschette and the portion was really small for the price ($12.50 for two small pieces of bread). The Almar was the best dish that we got; the bread is soft and the eggs are fluffy and delicious. The Mezzi Rigatoni was okay, but didn't taste much better than a pasta dish that I could have made at home. I did enjoy the sausage bits in it though. On the plus side, the drinks were not too bad price-wise for a New York brunch place. The bellini was $8 and refreshing, and the happycino was good as well (alcohol + coffee is always an interesting combination) and about the same price. read more

This is a very cool hip brunch spot in Dumbo. We went there with another couple and all of us enjoyed our dishes. The dishes vary from very basic to kind of fancy. Don't worry, you can order anything here and it will be good. The drinks are quite expensive but also good. We mostly had bloody Mary's and enjoyed them. I had family in for a short visit and I made reservations for 6, they had a huge table set up for us and the time we spent there was great. The food is scrumptious! -- they have a simple breakfast that's really tasty if you're an eggs and toast kind of gal or they have pancakes and French toast for more of a sweet tooth.
