I was in need for a sushi cake for a friend's birthday and inquired with Aloha Cones if they were able to make it. I was happy to hear that they could and was very excited about it. The price was about $100-$120 depending on what I wanted as my sashimi toppers and it was so worth it. The sushi cake chef asked me what I wanted and he totally delivered. The inside of the cake had layers of sushi rice, avocado, spicy ahi, and crab salad. It was topped with ahi, salmon, and hamachi with crunchy rice balls around it. He also added ahi, salmon, and hamachi sashimi on top with other garnishes and decorations. I was very impressed by the presentation as well as the taste and so was everyone else at the gathering. I asked about those with shellfish allergies and he stated that he could also accommodate that if I needed one in future. It was so delicious that I ordered from them several times and we loved the sushi cake from each order. I've had their poke bowls as well. The fish is fresh and you can choose from their different toppings. So I have to begin with this: I am not someone who eats sushi. EVER! But I have been to this place THREE TIMES IN TWO WEEEKS because it's a one of a kind. My friend, who is a local of Moanaloa Valley, took me out to lunch and said "Brah, I have a place you have to try but you need to be adventurous." Needless to say I was super apprehensive until we ate. Lunch that day was the Ahi Katzu mixed plate and it was simply amazing. Crab salad dollop, rice, seaweed, and local love was all I needed to know about the quality of this place. Second lunch with some buddies "it was strongly suggested by the owner's wife" that I eat Poke Nachos and having NEVER HAD POKE - I followed her lead and was once again AMAZED at the flavor and quality of the food. Mind blown! Literally never had anything like it. Last lunch, which was yesterday, was the DRAGON BOWL which was: Poke, tempura shrimp with rice, cucumbers, daikon, and crab salad. My coworkers and I decided to grab salmon and hamachi bowls from Aloha Cones today, and I was extremely disappointed with our order. The salmon looked like leftover pieces that weren't consistently cut. There were thick pieces, thin pieces, and uneven cuts that were falling apart. Some even had the fatty grey layer between the scales and the fish still attached, which wasn't cleaned off. The fish was mushy, and part of the bowl seemed like it was filled with scraps that had just been pushed into a corner. I had high expectations after hearing my friend's recommendations, but unfortunately, we won't be going back. We ended up microwaving the rest of the fish and feeding it to the office dog because we just couldn't stomach eating it and had lost our appetite. read more

It is my first time trying Aloha cones as I was nearby. I got 4 different poke bowls and they were all great. I love the wasabi masago ahi the best. The fish were all fresh and very nice flavor. The only thing I was really disappointed in was the sushi rice. I got 4 bowls for my family and we all had very mushy sushi rice that we couldn't really eat it with the fish. I just feel that if it's gonna be with poke the rice should at least be firm with sushi vinegar and the texture of rice should not be mushy that it's almost like rice porridge. Aloha Cones has been a bookmark of mine forever. I just never came around to checking them out. That changed when friends of mine surprised me with a sushi cake for my birthday. I've seen this concept on social media but never saw it in real life and it looked amazing! Since I don't really eat sweets like regular cake, this was a perfect substitute! I have to say it was quite thoughtful of them to think about this and order one. Between a regular cake and sushi cake, I think most people will go with a sushi cake. At least for those who eat sushi/raw fish. My friends told me that a person can customize the cake and the staff there did a good job creating it. One of the best poke bowls I've had on island. I've had this on my bookmark list for over a year and finally made it over. Parking is a hassle. It's located on a main road, which can be difficult to maneuver. It seemed like there may be a parking lot behind, but I wasn't able to determine if it was for Aloha Cones or not. I ended up finding free street parking instead. Interior is cute, but very small. No room to dine in, at least not during this time. You order at the counter and luckily the wait was short. I ordered the spicy tuna poke bowl with a side of hamachi sashimi and it was fantastic. The crab salad and even the rice were really good. It was expensive however. My bill for the bowl and the hamachi was over $30. read more

Although I'm sad their location closed at the mall, I'm so happy they found a new location in Kalihi! As I was looking for a unique cake to get my husband for his birthday, I stumbled upon Aloha Cones' Instagram page! I saw pictures of their amazing sushi cakes and knew I needed to get it! I DM'd them the cake I wanted and the date and time I wanted to pick it up! There are a VARIETY of 'cakes' you can order from them including 3 different types of sushi cakes, a poke cake, and a sashimi platter. I opted for the $90 sushi cake which came with ahi, hamachi, and salmon sashimi, and sliced cucumbers on top with sushi rice, crab salad, spicy ahi, and avocado inside. I then got a side or toppings which included bubu arare, unagi sauce, ginger, and wasabi shaped into a leaf. It was BEAUTIFUL! It also weighed over 8lbs! (Yes, I weighed it, it was so heavy!) When I picked it up, they briefed me on how they suggest the cake be eaten, how to carry it so it doesn't get ruined, and a rundown of the ingredients. They even offered to help to my car! I thought that was super nice of them to do! Since the cake as sooo huge! We shared it amongst 7 people and there was still more than 1/4 of the cake left! My husband and I ate it 3 days in a row before it was all gone. But, we LOVED every bite of it! The unagi sauce and bubu arare just took this to another level! The crunchiness from the arare and you seriously can't go wrong with unagi sauce! Overall, I'm pretty sure this is going to be a new go-to savory cake in our family! Man the poke nachos is everything you need in life! They make their chips in house too so they only make a limited amount and if they run out you may not be able to order it. It's a very small spot with limited seating but most people do take out it seems. Owner is so nice, she always talks story with us when she is making our food. This little gem was highly recommended by my best friend so I had to go and try. It is located on the corner of Houghtailing St. (Next to gyukaku kalihi) and let me tell you now that parking can be really hard. They have a little parking lot in the back of the building, but there's about 6 spaces. If that's all full, then you try street parking. I went in at noon and it wasn't busy at all. The shop is small and service was straightforward. I almost didn't see the specials menu written on a little white board sitting on top of the wooden table below the TV that shows the regular menu. I'm glad I did notice it! From their specials, I ordered the tempura salmon plate which comes with rice, imitation crab salad, and greens ($13). I was also craving poke so i ordered half portion of their spicy ahi ($4). I was a little bummed because I may have let the plate sit too long because by the time I parked and ate, the tempura salmon was not as crunchy as I would have like it. However, flavors were on point! They give a generous amount of salmon and it's so tender and flakey! The spicy ahi was also delicious, a little on the spicy side. But the star was that imitation crab salad poke. I made a little poke bowl by topping my rice with spicy ahi and the imitation crab salad poke, gave it a lil mix and OMG SOOOOOOOO GOOD! I haven't been able to try Aloha Cone until they moved to Kalihi. They have more parking available at this location so it's better. I'm not a fan of raw fish but I didn't realized they offer special plate lunches! I was surprised to see Lily D's posting of her yummy Ahi Katsu ($12.50)! I thought her katsu looked so crunchy and wanted to try it the next day. Yes, it was indeed crunchy and the bread crumbs seemed to be a little larger than some places so it had a nice crunchy exterior yet it was nice and moist on the inside. The unagi/garlic aioli sauce was on the side. My work friend and I also shared the furikake salmon tempura plate ($13) and it reminded us both of the Kaka'ako Kitchen's Furikake tempura catfish. The batter was light with furikake inside and the salmon was really moist too! I just fell in LOVE with both dishes. You know it's so good when you keep thinking about it and wondering when you're going back for more! I only wished they were open later so I can order take outs for dinner and wished they were open on Sundays too. If they are busy they may not get to your phone call right away. My friend ordered online the first time. The next time, we were going to order online but the Furikake Salmon Tempura wasn't available to order online but called to verify, and they said they do have it available. Probably the website wasn't updated. So far I've been back once but I haven't been inside yet since I'm always the driver but heard the workers were really nice! The plates came with a yummy imitation crab salad although sometimes the sauce from container or the dressing from the green salad would run into the crab salad. The plates were served with delicious sushi rice than just plain rice! I would highly recommend the two fried plates. Aloha Cones has been in Kalihi for quite some time now, and after all this time of graduating from Damien and living 2 minutes away, I finally decided to try the place out because I love fish in general :) Right when walking in, aunty and the sushi chef were really nice to me and asking me if I needed anything. Aunty helped me with the menu, and after I ordered, she was very considerate with asking me if I needed any more chopsticks or wasabi or shoyu. I will definitely go here again, because the combination bowl I got was so good. This review is for Aloha Cones' sushi cake! I had read about their sushi cakes on Frolic Hawaii and it looked AMAZING. I was visiting family on Oahu and since it would be a few days after my mom's birthday, I decided to surprise her with a sushi cake. I contacted Aloha Cones through their Instagram to set up the order. I went with their $90 sushi cake and made a request to sub out the crab since I'm allergic to shellfish unfortunately. Michael was GREAT with communicating and explained that he would be able to sub the crab for sesame ahi poke. Michael was also wonderful with coordinating the pickup time since I was coming to get it a few hours after my flight from PDX landed. The whole process was flawless and Michael carefully explained the add ons such as the bubu arare that you can add on for extra crunch, and the shoyu syrup to drizzle on or for dipping. Now for the cake. Pictures do not do this thing justice! The sashimi rosettes are BEAUTIFUL. Michael incorporated even thinner slices of fish onto the outside of the cake, giving it a beautiful look. You need to slice it with a wet knife after you remove the rosettes, or else the rice will stick! There was the sesame poke, avocado, and spicy ahi layers. My family members said that it probably would've tasted amazing with crab so they're already getting prepared to contact Michael for another sushi cake! read more

Aloha cones is one of my covid finds for 2020. I randomly seen a photo of a sushi cake on Instagram and I slid into their DM's inquiring about them. They're all so very pretty and great if you have lots of people in your family that enjoy sushi. Since it was just the two of us I inquired if they could make a smaller one so it doesn't go to waste. Honestly who wants a cake full of sugar and diabetes? Not me! Lol! I rather have a sushi cake! I requested for a cake with just hamachi and salmon on the top, no ahi since I don't really care for it and my mom works for a fish wholesaler. Inside the cake had some crab salad and it was lined with bubu arare on the sides. It looked so pretty! It was roughly about $25 I think. My husbands first impression was "wow" They're located in kalihi. If you're familiar to where rainbows is in kalihi then you're at the right spot. There's a lot of parking especially in the farther lot which is more spacious to get in and out of. I've actually been there a few times and tried the salmon tempura and the ahi katsu. I've must've passed Aloha Cones on School Street numerous times. I've been to Gyu-Kaku BBQ upstairs and Rainbow Drive Inn on the corner. A buddy of mine who's all about the "poke" highly recommended this place. When he told me the location, I had no clue Aloha Cones was sandwiched in between these places. I've been here several times already since my buddy's high recommendations, and yup, I highly recommend this place too! I've always ordered the Dragon Bowl and Spicy Tuna Poke Bowl. One word to describe them? Fresh! Can't beat fresh! On the plate lunch side, their Furikake Salmon Tempura and Hurricane Chicken are unique and really good! And that crab salad that comes with them. Very tasty! Yummy! Their portions are generous. I've been to poke places where the bowls are on the "smaller" side, I end up having to order two for myself. It doesn't appear they have indoor seating at this time due to Covid, but that's ok. They're in business and serving their really fine poke bowls and entrees for takeout. They also have pre-cooked items time to time in the glass case for quick grab and go. Last time I was there, I believe they had Ahi patties to go. Parking is available in front on School Street during non-rush hour traffic and in the back and another bigger lot behind the attached parking lot on Houghtailing Street. Stopped here because of their great reviews and we were not disappointed! My husband and I both had combo bowls, he had yellowtail instead of salmon. Everything was SO fresh and flavorful. We sat and talked with the restaurant staff at the counter while we ate and they had so many great suggestions for us. They were so friendly and really made the lunch. The sushi cake was beautiful and the highlight of the party. When I went back to order another one, chef Mike suggested I get the sashimi platter and poke platter to feed more people. The last 2-3 times I went here the quality has gone further and further downhill (2 out of 3 times were pre covid-19 so I don't blame the pandemic). The quality of fish and value for the money just are not there anymore. You can see it in the latest pics. The salmon is less fatty, slices are thinner. The hamachi was filled with little tissues that made it chewy and not melt in my mouth like it should. The ahi poke tasted pre-frozen. Usually good quality ahi poke is tender but today's poke tasted like it came from Times. It had that texture of low quality and the taste was not good (the fish and the seasoning blend). Combo cowls used to be $13 but they're now $15, which comes out to $17-18 with tax and tip. For that price, there's better poke bowls and sushi options. The other thing about the last few experiences was the service is not as friendly. I asked for wasabi and ginger but only got a packet of wasabi (which is not as good as fresh wasabi) and 1 packet of shoyu. When I asked for another shoyu it was flung in the bag with reluctance. Didn't even get a napkin with my order. If I hadn't had at least 2 other mediocre experiences prior to today, I would have shrugged it off as covid related. But I think this place has run its course for my lunch cravings. read more

Since yelp says I'm a regular now, I guess it's time I finally write a review on this awesome place. I used to go to their old location all the time, but parking was always a pain. With this location, it's closer to my house and I can park in front on the street and run in, order my bowl, and have it ready in minutes. As always, they have excellent service. Staff was very friendly and quick. This last time I visited, they told me they were thinking of making their own ahi dip. If they do, I would definitely order!
