Aloha Cones is still in Honolulu! Instead of having a shop on Kinau Street (by Queen's Medical Center), Aloha Cones has moved to School Street in Kalihi! It shares the parking lot with Rainbow Drive-In, Dragon Tea, and Gyu-Kaku. Enter the free parking lot from Houghtailing Street. While waiting for my beverages to be made at Dragon Tea next door, I entered Aloha Cones' small shop. I was greeted immediately and my order (Chirashi bowl) was created right away! It's so colorful and fresh with ahi, hamachi, salmon, and imitation crab salad! I asked to take a picture of my bowl before I left so that I wouldn't forget later! I'm glad I've discovered this spot, and that they're open during all the quarantine shut downs! You can order online, or call it in, so you don't have to spend much time in the space. They have a cute bartop to sit at (once we return to some normalcy). They have poke, sashimi, poke bowls, or salads that you can buy. They have cooked options too, but I'm a raw fish kinda gal. Their ingredients are quality (I'm super picky on my fish in particular) and the portions are filling. I usually get the combination bowl, which comes with your choice of poke and sashimi, imitation crab salad with unagi sauce, cucumbers, and daikon, served over rice. I recommend a second scoop of the crab salad... just because. If you like poke or sashimi, you should try this place. You can thank me later! The talk of our Aunty's 90th Birthday party! Everyone busted out their cell phones to take a picture of the lovely Flower Sushi Birthday Cake that we pre-ordered a week before the event. One of the places where I like to get poke bowls. Located next to Rainbow Drive on North School Street. You can't miss it. This last visit was not for a poke bowl, but it was to pick up a sushi cake. I had called in and ordered it a day before and it was ready at the time I had requested. The staff their are friendly and got great customer service. I ordered the 6 inch, 3-layered cake for my bf's belated birthday. It did not disappoint. Sashimi (maguro, salmon, and hamachi) on the top shaped like roses and for the inside, layered with sushi rice on the bottom, followed by chopped spicy ahi, rice, california crab, rice, avocado, rice and then your top layer of rice and a layer of sashimi. The entire sushi cake was covered with sesame seeds. They also ask you if you want ginger, wasabi and unagi sauce on the side. Each slice of the sushi cake was delicious. My wife treated me to my very first sushi cake for my bday :))) Aside from being one of the most creative food concoctions I've ever seen, it tasted AMAZING. The sashimi flowers were tender and of great quality. Yet the layers under the sashimi were the star of the show. The thinly sliced layer of fish, imitation crab, spicy tuna, and everything else were exceptional. I prefer savory over sweet so this was the best cake of my life. Checked out ALOHA CONES for the very 1st time at their new location in Kalihi right on N.School Street across from 76 gas station. It's a small space Resturant with only bar style seating that's seats about 6/8 people I'd say. Parking / You can park in the private lot for free at no charge lots of parking stalls, parking is located directly behind the Resturant, parking entrance is on Houghtailing side. Food / I ordered their SUSHI HAND ROLLS, It's a item that is not on their menu, so you'll just have to ask the staff workers about them and prices. Sushi hand rolls I ordered were *California $2.50 each *Spicy Ahi $3.00 each *Hamachi $3.50 each *Salmon $3.50 each All hand rolls you can put anything in it like Onions, avocado, cucumber etc. Their hand rolls is GOOD and it's a GOOD SIZE hand roll. The crab is always good. They have done a lot of renovations since I last came, so it looks a lot nicer. I feel the portions have gotten little bit smaller but that's common... but my most recent visit, I watched the cashier coughed over my open bowl and the channel they had on their TV was questionable. Got the regular combination bowl with spicy tuna and wasabi masago ahi and my gifriend got a mini tempura shrimp bowl. We waited in our car about a block away and could see the restaurant. The whole order took an hour just for a Togo order that was for pickup in store. Food: fish was extremely flavorful but hard to mix the bowl around since it's packed (good thing) Personally I didn't feel like the flavors mixed together that well as I would have expected. Individually they're all good but mixed it's not as ideal. Tempura shrimp bow was decent enough but pricy in my opinion. I bought the sushi cake from Aloha Cones about 2 years ago before my wife was pregnant. It was really fantastic back then. About a week ago, I bought a sushi cake again here as a celebratory meal for her post-pregnancy, and the difference is a bit sad. Let me start by saying that the people there were very friendly and nice.. but that's not really enough for a restaurant. First, they got the date of the order wrong so I ended up having to wait an extra hour once I got there. (They repeatedly said they tried to contact me in the morning, only to later realize that they weren't even talking about the right person.) Second, it was fortunate that I ran back inside to make sure they didn't screw up the special instructions to not use a mayo layer on the inside because they were about to screw up yet again. (In my call ahead order, I specified that my wife cannot eat mayo, and they said they would be able to accommodate that request. As a comparison, the sushi cake from two years ago used a nice sesame poke layer that worked really well with the cake. This time around, they just used a drier tasting shoyu poke instead.) Finally, after all the trouble, the sushi cake didn't even taste good. It was okay. I honestly think that you'd get a better value and presentation just by spending the same amount at Ahi and Vegetables, for instance. (Oh, they also screwed and made a bigger size than I requested, but i didn't correct it because I figured they would take another hour to fix the mistake.) I guess, in the end, these guys are a bit like Hawaiian Rent-All. The management has changed, the outside might look similar, but it's just a veneer. It's not going to be what you expect from the previous owners. I can only hope that they improve in the future, but I personally won't be trying it any time soon or probably ever at this point. PS. They do have a lot of parking though. That's a bonus if you're forced to wait an extra hour. read more

Amazing sushi cakes! If you are in need of a sushi cake, look no further. I placed my order through their instagram via DM and communication was so easy and simple. The sushi cake was so fresh and although they say it feeds a certain amount of people we've shared our cake with more than 20 people enjoying it as pupus of course and not just the main meal. I'd chose a sushi cake over a traditional cake any day! I've also enjoyed their furikake salmon and ahi katsu plates that were on special. Both were large portions. I've been to Aloha Cones many times and really enjoyed every visit. Its been awhile since my last visit. After all day house cleaning on Veteran's Day, we took a break for a gas fill up and lunch. Where for lunch? I decided it was time to visit Aloha Cones again, since we were in the area. We usually park on the street right in front of Aloha Cones but this visit, I was happy to see more parking available, there is a second parking lot. We never been to Aloha Cones' previous location but since they moved and now located in Kalihi, it is convenient for me. Aloha Cones is located right between Rainbow Drive In and Dragon Tea. The shop is tiny, pre-pandemic days there were about 5 seats to utilize but due to pandemic, it is just take out only. Just like eating Sushi in a bowl at Aloha Cones, My family and I really enjoyed our meals here, my daughter and husband likes the poke bowls, and since I don't eat poke, My faves are the chicken katsu ( specials during my last visits) and the California Sushi. They have the bestest crab salad. Note, Crab Salad is drizzled with unagi sauce. The menu is very simple, poke very fresh and tasty. During this recent visit, we went with the specials instead of our usual orders of poke bowl and california sushi, my other half and I each got a different plate so we could share, Our orders were ahi katsu (12.50), furikake salmon tempura ($13.), & a side order of crab salad. Salad for me and white rice for the other half. Our plans were to go to the park to enjoy our food but figured it would be more safe to enjoy our meal at home, the food smelled so good on the way home, I couldn't wait to eat! I saw a sushi cake on IG last May from a place in Florida and totally fell in love! Cut to six months later, when I started to see a locally made sushi cake from Aloha Cones and my mouth began watering! My friends and I had a small get together for a birthday and I knew exactly what I wanted to get for the potluck...the sushi cake! I emailed Aloha Cones and got the $90 sushi cake, which on the top had rose shaped ahi, hamachi and salmon sashimi. The cake portion had sushi rice, spicy tuna, crab salad, avocado, furikake and babu arare. Sooo yummy! They offer a few other different sushi cakes that go up in price - which also looked very yummy! I was called the next day to confirm my pickup date and time - they close at 4pm, so I initially asked for the latest pick up time of 3:45/4pm, but the guy I spoke with said I could pick up at 4:30pm, which was even better for me! I got a second call the day before my scheduled pick up date to confirm again and both guys I talked to were very nice! So my BF and I picked up the sushi cake and everyone working there was so friendly and efficient! They gave us serving suggestions and even instructions on how to transport it, as it could slide around in the box. That sushi cake was BEAUTIFUL and heavy!! Call in ordering makes it super easy to run in the front door and grab your order. But if you don't, they make orders really fast--under 5 minutes--if you order on-site. Fish is always fresh and bowls are tasty. But my favorite thing about it is how they make it like a plate lunch with extra sides. Crab Mac salad is so ono, you'll want more. Thin sliced Japanese cucumbers salad --my favorite way to eat them. And daikon spaghetti strings top off the all-inclusive sides in poke bowls. Ooh, this place is so good. Dollar Car Rental made me such a great offer on my rental car that I kept it the entire time I was in Hawaii. To some, having a car in Waikiki is useless but without a car you'll never get to Aloha Cones and that makes me sad for you. Keep the car! A handful of local yelpers had given 5-star reviews to Aloha Cones so when I finished hiking the Makiki Valley Trail I was happy to find that Aloha Cones wasn't too far away. The poke bowl at Nico's Fish Market is 100% delicious but the Poke Rice Bowl at Aloha Cones is delicious in a whole different way. Where Nico's is straight-up fresh poke and a lot of it, the version Aloha Cones serves is a little lighter and more elegant. I loved their version of Spicy Tuna (fresh tuna with a hand-crafted spicy sauce poured atop) and my hiking partner loved his Sesame Ahi Poke Rice Bowl. A surprising inclusion in each is a scoop of crab mix, the sort that's usually found in California Rolls. It was unexpected and rich and satisfying in flavor. I didn't ask if they used real crab but assumed it must be as I liked this a lot and can't stomach the artificial stuff. When coming to Aloha Cones it's first helpful to look at photos of the building it's in. Pink and small, it's easy to pass by if you don't know what you're looking for. Free parking is available in a tiny lot right behind the place. I can't say exactly why my partner liked this more than the poke bowl at Nico's Fish Market (which we both liked quite a lot). Perhaps it was the hike which preceded it or perhaps it really was in a category of its own. Either is royally satisfying but Aloha Cones had an undefined twist of special that lodged it firmly in the category of great.
