Salmon and marinated shrimp poke bowl
    Katrina M.

Overall, it was pretty good but not the best. The portion size was good which is important to me for my poke bowls! I got shrimp for one of my protein scoops and it was all really just tails (no shell, but tails). Rice wasn't sushi rice I'm used to, or it was but just wasn't cooked right. It was a little dry. I liked the salmon and seaweed salad, not so much the crab salad.

The poke itself is ok, but the pricing is atrocious. I ordered a small bowl and thats exactly what it was: extremely small, as in meant for a child. However, the pricing did not reflect that at all, which is a shame, because the poke itself was pretty delicious.

I was glad to see "Aloha Poke" opening another location. I always like downtown Evanston and enjoyed walking around the North Shore when it's nice out. I knew the system quite well since I've been to the one in Boystown and the original one inside the French Market. I almost wanted to be greedy and went for the kahuna size. After a serious contemplation, I figured the big (16 oz.) bowl should do the trick on easing my hunger. This time I customized my ingredients. The same old brown rice and marinated ahi tuna were included, yet I only asked for seaweed, avocado, scallion, spicy aioli, and sesame oil. You know what? I should have asked for a "808," meaning "todos" to have the entire bowl filled to the brim. I really didn't think I was that "entitled". However, I was slightly disappointed to see a slim piece of avocado in it. I remembered both Boystown and French Market locations did a great job on loading the bowls up. Was this a mere inconsistency? I really hoped it was the case because all ingredients were on point and delicious. The bottom line is: my bowl was half-empty (or half-full if you think about everything optimistically). I still rendered four (4) stars on this review because I'm freakin' fond of poke. There was no seating in this one; standing room with a table against the window was all they had.

Side view of my Kahuna bowl. Love the clear bowls so you can see all the deliciousness inside!

So excited that a new Aloha Poke location has opened up north! Now I can get more of this poke goodness more often! :) The space is small, there are a few seats along the window, where you can pull up a seat to the table counter (what's that called) to eat. Space is clean and bright. Staff seems friendly. Parking can be a challenge, especially when I went which was on a Friday night. But it's downtown Evanston so I expected it. Poke bowls are pieces of raw fish (tuna, salmon) that can be served marinated or naked on top of a bed of white or brown rice or mixed greens with whatever toppings you choose. (Sorry my description doesn't do it justice - you have to go and check it out for yourself! :D). If you're like me you're not sure what to put in the poke bowl of goodness so I chose a house creation (there are 3) called Crunch and added some avocado, pineapple, and wasabi. All ingredients were fresh and the sauces are legit. The combination of ingredients are a perfect poke bowl symphony! The fish is also fresh and delicious. I can't wait to come back!

I really enjoyed coming here! The food was fresh and tasted great! Sometimes I'm skeptical of the fish at poke restaurants because I've been to places where it has that "fishy" taste...the fish here is fresh and delicious! It's in walking distance of campus right in the heart of downtown Evanston. There are no tables to eat inside, but the restaurant is right next to the middle of downtown where there are many tables to eat outside. There was a line out the door when I came with coworkers, but the service was incredibly quick! This is a great place to come if you want something healthy, quick, and fresh! The only reason I gave a 4/5 stars was that I felt the bowls were a bit on the higher end for cost with the amount of food given. Either way, I will likely be back!!

Conveniently located on a busy corner within walking distance of campus, this spot is a popular one among me and my Northwestern friends. The seafood is always fresh, there are a variety of options, but the best part that sets Aloha apart from other poke places nearby are the topping choices and limitless combinations. My go-to order is the naked salmon + Crunch house bowl + additional avocado and onions + extra spicy aioli (love that stuff). Guaranteed party of flavors and textures in your mouth! The decor in Aloha is always so cheerful - a ready temporary escape from the winter cold months. Two small downsides which brought it down from 5 stars: it's a bit pricey (cost to quantity) for a college student's budget, but I think you get the freshness. Also, there is no seating which in the winter is a hassle, but there are plenty of outdoor areas to enjoy sitting outside when it is warm!

The joint is located in Downtown Evanston. I call it joint because it has no seating inside the establishment. There's plenty of outside seating in the plaza right outside the business, which works when the wheather is cooperating. I've been to the location several times and each time have enjoyed my customized poke bowl. I prefer vegetarian bowls over ones containing fish so I cannot comment on the fish itself. The only issues I've noticed is the customer service. Every time I've been there I've experienced disinterest from the employees and complete lack of customer service. For the prices they are charging they can certainly afford to retrain staff on customer service or to provide incentives for them so that they are happier doing their jobs and don't look so miserable like someone has forced them to take orders.

*I'm basing this review on my first experience here* Decided to finally try this place out to satisfy my poke crave. Came in on a Tuesday around lunch time and the place was empty. The cashier could tell I didn't know what to get so she was very kind and explained to me their most popular items (crunch) and how everything was customizable. Long story short, they messed up my order. I specifically asked no jalapeño's with my crunch bowl and to add scallions and seaweed but that was nowhere to be found. Despite my missing ingredients, the poke bowl was delicious. I got the "big" size and my boyfriend had the "kahuna" size which is only slightly bigger. TLDR; bad experience from messed up order. Portions small, but good quality poke.

Granted the last time I went here was in 2019 to their old location just a few blocks up on Lincoln Avenue but it seems they got a corporate makeover after shutting down during the pandemic and rebranding. Maybe they have a new owner...? It's much more spacious and brighter with Herman Miller stool seats, a pinball machine and high ceilings. But with all of these new trendy upgrades it has lost its cozy, relaxing small business neighborhood vibe the old location had IMO. They added bubble tea and Mochi donuts to their menu. They also were playing rap & trap music and I honestly thought I had walked into the wrong place when I went in. Gone are the guys busy behind the counter. You order via an ordering kiosk (they seem to be popular with places cutting down on staff) made by one person behind the counter. My order was made quickly but I'm not really sure about the kiosk ordering system since you need to input your phone number. I ordered my favorite bowl of theirs, Jimmy's Creation. The first time I tried it in 2018 it was so good I nearly skipped out of the place and wanted to eat here everyday. It's still good but the rice is much more sticky, a little too sticky for my liking since I had to break it up into chunks with my chopsticks. The sauce was a bit too sweat also. Was it always this sweat...? A minor issue though based on preference I guess. I would probably return again but probably not go out of my way and trek through a snow storm like I did once years ago.
