This is our first time at the venue. Two employees were working. It is New Year's Day, very cold out, few customers. There's quick ordering, a little confusing though at first. Poke bowls are made to order fresh and with the right choice of ingredients, the bowls serve as a healthy option. My go to is the Salmon crunch bowl. Over the years inflation has driven prices up forcing them to scale down portion sizes. Due to this, I don't frequent Aloha often as I would like. This is unfortunate given how delicious this stuff is. The other lousy part is the lack of a parking lot. Metered street parking is the only option where obtaining a space is a challenge especially during nights and weekends. The storefront is small with a lack of indoor space to eat. Unless you're taking your food to-go, the only dining option is outdoors on a shared plaza feet from the store. There are 3 sizes for poke bowls. Little, Big and Kahuna. The Little provides 6-8 healthy bites at best, a snack portion for most folks. The Big is substantial but comes at a higher cost. read more

There's only a handful of locations within the Chicagoland area and it's really hit or miss for me as far as the service goes. My last experience wasn't the most customer service friendly. Felt more of a bother than a guest. Hit or miss. They have 3 different sizes. "Little", "Big" and the "Kahuna". "Little" is so small and just a snack. Good for people with little to no appetite. The "Kahuna" size looks exponentially larger in picture to the "Big" but they are pretty much the same size IRL. The "Kahuna" is "deeper" meaning you get more towards the bottom compared to a "Big" that is much more shallow. Their circumference is about the same. For the pricing and amount you get, it's worth it once in a blue moon to treat yoself. It won't fill you up much. 1 Kauna and 1 big cost 45-50.00. Steep. The quality of fish and ingredients is bar none. Everything is fresh and I have yet to have a bad experience with their actual food. So I get why it's on the high end $$. read more

The whole place was a little bit confusing. I guess it's supposed to work like a Chipotle where you work down the line and select the things you want, but then again there are certain options that you can just order. The people working there had a hard time explaining how it all worked too, once the food came tasted like bowl that had sat in some refrigerator for a few days. Didn't taste very fresh, but I guess I should've expected that. I was. I was grossed out by the server who kept scraping her nose while she was taking our order. Also - aïoli sauce is gross. I was glad to see "Aloha Poke" opening another location. I always like downtown Evanston and enjoyed walking around the North Shore when it's nice out. I knew the system quite well since I've been to the one in Boystown and the original one inside the French Market. I almost wanted to be greedy and went for the kahuna size. After a serious contemplation, I figured the big (16 oz.) bowl should do the trick on easing my hunger. This time I customized my ingredients. The same old brown rice and marinated ahi tuna were included, yet I only asked for seaweed, avocado, scallion, spicy aioli, and sesame oil. You know what? I should have asked for a "808," meaning "todos" to have the entire bowl filled to the brim. I really didn't think I was that "entitled". However, I was slightly disappointed to see a slim piece of avocado in it. I remembered both Boystown and French Market locations did a great job on loading the bowls up. Was this a mere inconsistency? I really hoped it was the case because all ingredients were on point and delicious. The bottom line is: my bowl was half-empty (or half-full if you think about everything optimistically). I still rendered four (4) stars on this review because I'm freakin' fond of poke. So excited that a new Aloha Poke location has opened up north! Now I can get more of this poke goodness more often! :) The space is small, there are a few seats along the window, where you can pull up a seat to the table counter (what's that called) to eat. Space is clean and bright. Staff seems friendly. Parking can be a challenge, especially when I went which was on a Friday night. But it's downtown Evanston so I expected it. Poke bowls are pieces of raw fish (tuna, salmon) that can be served marinated or naked on top of a bed of white or brown rice or mixed greens with whatever toppings you choose. (Sorry my description doesn't do it justice - you have to go and check it out for yourself! :D). If you're like me you're not sure what to put in the poke bowl of goodness so I chose a house creation (there are 3) called Crunch and added some avocado, pineapple, and wasabi. It pains me to write this because I love Aloha Poke but this location missed the mark. I ordered via Uber eats and it came with sesame seeds (which I'm severely allergic to). I called the store and told them and they said they'd make sure my next order was right. I reordered and there were no sesame seeds but it had brown rice instead of white (I can't eat brown rice due to Chrons). I ended up tossing that one too. read more

Sometimes I'm skeptical of the fish at poke restaurants because I've been to places where it has that "fishy" taste...the fish here is fresh and delicious! It's in walking distance of campus right in the heart of downtown Evanston. There are no tables to eat inside, but the restaurant is right next to the middle of downtown where there are many tables to eat outside. There was a line out the door when I came with coworkers, but the service was incredibly quick! This is a great place to come if you want something healthy, quick, and fresh! The only reason I gave a 4/5 stars was that I felt the bowls were a bit on the higher end for cost with the amount of food given. Either way, I will likely be back!! read more

The seafood is always fresh, there are a variety of options, but the best part that sets Aloha apart from other poke places nearby are the topping choices and limitless combinations. My go-to order is the naked salmon + Crunch house bowl + additional avocado and onions + extra spicy aioli (love that stuff). Guaranteed party of flavors and textures in your mouth! The decor in Aloha is always so cheerful - a ready temporary escape from the winter cold months. Two small downsides which brought it down from 5 stars: it's a bit pricey (cost to quantity) for a college student's budget, but I think you get the freshness. There's plenty of outside seating in the plaza right outside the business, which works when the wheather is cooperating. The only issues I've noticed is the customer service. Every time I've been there I've experienced disinterest from the employees and complete lack of customer service. They finally opened their Evanston location! The Evanston Aloha Poke replaced the location of the Jamba Juice that closed down a while back. This location is very tiny with very little room. They have a small counter on the side with few stools to sit, but this is not a place to eat with a large group of places. I was pleasantly surprised by how fresh the food here and I like how you can customized your order to fit exactly to your liking. They also have gluten free options here. There are three different sizes to choose from: little, big, and kahuna. Portion sizes are surprisingly very small, but they really fill up the bowls to the max. Price is high for the amount of food, but the quality of the food is great. Everything is fresh and clean. I've been wanting to try poke for the longest time, so my boyfriend and I finally came here on Saturday afternoon. There were a few people in front of us, but we didn't have to wait long for our orders at all. I think the only downside to this place is that there isn't much room. The only seating area is a couple of chairs lined up for the counter top facing the window, but since there were already people there, we had to take our food to-go. Luckily, it was really nice out that weekend, so we went to a nearby park. I really hope that they'll be able to expand the place in the future. I ordered a big bowl of marinated ahi tuna over white rice with rice seasoning, seaweed, cucumbers, crunch, and spicy aioli sauce. I was in love with it all; you could tell how fresh everything was and how great the quality was. This place seriously satisfied my cravings, and we definitely can't wait to be back. To be fair, we didn't return to the shop to try to right the ship.... we were eating a block away & not up for repacking and dealing with it. Just moved on to Kilwin's for desert. Poke's quickly becoming the new thing, which is awesome since fresh fish and increasing variety are great for the Evanston + NU scene. TLDR: Food's fresh and great! Price/Food ratio isn't the best, pricing between 8oz/16oz/24oz isn't consistent. Check the size of the bowls before you order (they have sand filled preview containers by the register)- if you are pretty hungry consider getting the largest size (24oz/Kahuna) since the large (16oz/Big) might not fill you up. -- The menu (http://www.alohapokeco.com/menu/) is pretty simple, though unlike some other poke places I've visited you order all at once at the register and they prepare everything behind the counter. You first choose which size you want- they have 8 oz increments (small, big, and kahuna) at variably spaced price levels ($7.5 for the 8oz, $9.5 for the 16oz, and $14.5 for the 24 oz) which is a little strange- I'd expect the 24oz to be 11.5$ but maybe they might proportion there to be less rice/more fish in the 24oz version? (Not sure) Then you choose one of three proteins: Tofu (for the vegetarians :3), Ahi Tuna, or Salmon. Keep in mind the fish is sushi-grade, so while raw expect a sashimi level quality. You can choose whether you want them marinated in their sweet soy sauce or simply plain. They recommended the marinated salmon when I visited. There's three base options- white/brown rice and a salad mix. You can then choose any assortment of their long list of toppings just keep in mind the ginger and the jalapenos pack a punch. After a short wait your food will be ready :), they have ikea type chairs in a casual bar-like sitting area if you want to dine-in. The food was fresh, if you've had poke before it's pretty standard. Some particular things about this restaurant could be improved, though they have several other Chicago locations that are run similarly. Beware that the small is super small and the large probably won't fill you up if you're pretty hungry. The pricing on the kahuna variant is fair, but it's a pretty large step up from the big (16oz) size. Compared to other poké places that I've visited (in Ohio!), this one isn't -special-, and the cost to food ratio isn't the best. Great poke! I love Aloha, and find myself craving it all the time. I like getting "mixed marinated" (salmon and tuna) because the marinate gives the fish a bit of a bite and I like that texture. But I'm sure getting the "naked" version is the fresher choice. I also switch up the sauces each time, but overall the sauces don't play a huge part in your finished product. The toppings do. Take advantage of their unlimited toppings! I always ask for everything. Warning-- sometimes the jalapeños are uber spicy, so if you get that as a topping, check it out before eating a bunch at once (easy to do since the toppings are put in clumps around the bowl). The Lakeview and French Market locations are better IMO-- they give you more fish and toppings. I've gotten an entire avocado half at Lakeview, but only one sliver at the Evanston location. Yay, a poke spot in Evanston! Coming from NYC, I've tried many poke spots there so it was hard to not compare this place to others... Arrived at 12pm on a Tuesday and was met with a line out the door. But the wait was pretty quick (~10 min). FOOD: I got the PYOB (pack your own bowl) BIG for $9.50 with a mix of marinated salmon and tuna. I love both and they packed a decent amount! I got it on top of a bed of brown rice - healthy. What's nice about this spot is that the toppings are all FREE of charge! Wooh! So I added: seaweed, scallion, tobiko, crunch, and of course AVOOO. Asked the cashier what she recommended for sauce and went with her suggestion of spicy aioli. After receiving my order, I thought the BIG size looked dainty compared to orders I've gotten in NYC for the same price. But, mix mix mix and mmm my stomach was satisfied by the end of the nomming. The spicy aioli wasn't very spicy at all and was the perfect glue to everything. If you're starving, I'd go with the KAHUNA size. SERVICE: Fast. AMBIANCE: Few seats. Neither traditional, nor a great modern interpretation. Cheaper & Easier to head to whole foods, but a sashimi block and make your own. 10x better, and less expensive.
