I arrived on a Friday night without reservations. It was late,maybe 10PM so while the tables were crowded there were still seats at the sushi bar. My friend and I sat there waiting for menus for a good five minutes until I finally asked for one. They asked if we wanted a drink and I ordered a tea and my friend a beer. After a long wait, I received my tea but my friend did not get his beer until well after the sushi arrived which was also a little odd. I put our orders up onto the bar and the sushi chef grabbed my order but the waitress took my friends order. Needless to say, my order came out and was just sitting on the bar getting warm until I finally said I think this is my order. Meanwhile, I had no plates, no chopsticks, no napkin. SO I shared my order with my friend who also had no plate, etc., His beer finally came after his sushi approximately 25 minutes after he originally ordered it. The waitresses behind the counter or at their station area seemed completely unorganized. I think they ran out of dishes as when I asked to have a dish and a container for my soy sauce, I was given a plastic shallow soup- sized bowl for each. Again I was sitting there with my big sushi boat with no chopsticks, plate, or napkin. I HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED anything like it. Definite turn off as the two gentlemen beside me had nice square sushi ceramic plates and a appropriately sized square dish for their soy. UNACCEPTABLE presentation...oh and no napkins. I had to ask again. The waitresses didn't seem to know who or if they should wait on us, We are sitting at the sushi bar mind you...did it matter? SO service would land a 1 on the suckometer. Now for the food. Totally reasonably priced. Dollar sushi pieces really gives one the opportunity to explore. The fish tasted fresh and rice cooked perfectly. The sushi rolls (Spicy tuna and rainbow roll were good enough...not the best but considering the service I was initially scared that the food would also be in the pits. Like I said, much to my surprise the sushi rolls that we ordered were OK. I always like to try a place twice to see if I had a fluke visit (unless the fish is not fresh, the place is dirty, the atmosphere is unbearable or the food is really bad). read more

Came in here for early dinner with friends on a Saturday night. The food was fine. A but pricey but it's sushi in Mount Vernon. The service was awful. The server didn't greet or seat us. We never got his name. White kid, dark brown hair. He looked so stoned. Took 10 minutes just to get waters on the table. Another 15 to bring 2 teas, 2 sodas and a beer. No orange with the blue moon as it's supposed to be served. He forgot my appetizer. Forgot to put "no veggies" in the poke bowl. Never asked us how everything turned out. Awful!!! For 5 people with a well over $140 check. And then there's an automatic gratuity. Thank goodness because without it he wouldn't have gotten a tip from us. There were 2 other tables other than us. 2 tables. One with 3 people and a couple in the corner. Not even his tables. We'll come back again for the food and hopefully we'll have a server that cares next time. read more

Have been here twice for dinner and both times left fat and happy! The first time I tried this place was before a show at the Meyerhoff and the only thing I had to critique was the service. I think they were really understaffed that evening and for some reason it took FOREVER to get our cocktails from the bar. They have a pretty decent selection of sushi to choose from and other interesting entrees on the menu. I've really enjoyed their specialty rolls and the shitake mushroom roll is excellent! Last time I had dinner here I tried the sushi "lasagna" which was the strangest and tastiest take on sushi I've ever tried! It's literally exactly what it sounds like, several warm layers of rice, seaweed, fish and lots of different sauces all wrapped in a big foil pan. It's really heavy because of all the sauces but worth trying. They also have delicious peach martinis and many other cocktails to choose from. The service is really unpredictable, but always really friendly and helpful. The decor is typical for a Hawaii/tiki themed sushi restaurant. They have a bar downstairs and I'm guessing a dance floor because the music is always blaring. Prices are standard for sushi, not too pricey but not cheap. This review is specifically for late night bar service. They were very rude to me and my friends. All of us felt like they did not want to serve us. Ignoring us at the bar even when they had no one to serve. They charged us a dollar more than the special board stated and when asked about it they stated that it was an automatic tip , we asked them why it was not represented on the board and they just walked away without talking to us, until later when they interrupted our conversation to tell us why there behavior was ok. I tried to give this place a chance many times. Very rude staff at the bar. Sushi isn't bad but it is not worth it with their poor service. At the bar I am always overcharged for drinks I did not buy. The bartender even had the audacity to add extra to the very generous tip I had already given her. She did not even deserve a single cent!! This was not the first time it happened. I thought she may have added another 0 on accident the first time but this is ridiculous. A friend & I came here for happy hour on a Wednesday evening & not knowing what to expect because it was both our 1st time visiting Aloha. We walked down the stairs and the ambience did not have it's typical sushi bar. It was dark and loud music. However, I did enjoy the music, but I like to chit chat and if they had lowered the music down & turned the light up I would have given it a 5 star. Also, we sat in the seating area and we had to order our food and drinks at the bar so we decided to sit at the bar. It wasn't busy at all so that was strange to why he never took our order at our seats. I had $1 sushi Hamachi Kama (yummy & not fishy at all), $1 Unagi (Eel) (perfect taste), & 4.95 salmon skin roll (too fishy :/) it was suppose to come in 6 rolls, but the chef cheated me with one less. I didn't complain about it because I was not a fan of the salmon skin roll. Well drinks was $3 and that totally topped it off and the male bartender (never got his name), but was cute and friendly. We didn't ask for much, but when we did he was attentive and responded speedy. We wanted to order one last round and missed the happy hour by 5 minutes and he still gave us the happy hour price. With that being said, good sushi, good drinks, & cool attentive bartender, I will return. Oh my friend is not a sushi eater and had honey mustard wings and said that it was okay, but we didn't expect it to be great since the restaurant is known for sushi. Decent price for what you get. it's my go-to place for some sushi in Baltimore if I'm hungry and in search of some good sushi. my boyfriend really likes the soups there too. the raw oyster there are mehhh tho...I'd pass on those. the service has always been good every time I've gone there so that's a plus. read more

We stopped in here after a search on urban spoon after walking around Sailabration and getting hot and hungry for sushi. A couple other places we tried either didn't open til 5 or there was no parking. Chose this after decent reviews and a parking spot! We were pleasantly surprised,mother sushi was very fresh and the rolls were delicious. We also ordered the regular sashimi, again super fresh and generous slices. We went for a basic meal where we wanted to meet up with friends but didn't want to spend too much-- had a California roll, tuna roll, salmon roll and an eel w/avocado roll. For starters they served us (complimentary!) mini portions of both miso soup and salad. The rolls featured generous portions of fish, which I found very fresh and flavorful. The textures and temperature of the sushi was just right. The atmosphere was relaxed, decently attractive, and it was easy to hold a conversation. The sushi here is pretty good given the location and price, but not amazing. Carry out is convenient if you live in the area. The restaurant has a few tables near the windows allowing for some people watching. I wasn't that happy with the BBQ choices, the preparation and quality seemed off. I would still be happy to stop here if in the area and looking for sushi. If you're somewhat fussy about the restaurant aesthetics you may want to walk down Charles to Minato instead. read more

Aloha is by far the best Sushi Restaurant in the city and has an amazing staff to boot. The lunch specials are a steal and their drinks will have you feeling warm and fuzzy for hours. The food tastes alright, but the service is very disappointing in the bar. I came in hungry. When I saw the inside was basically empty, I decided to stay here and eat. Only a couple of customers in the bar and they were actually drinking the beer and liquor anyhow. After I ordered my food finally, I waited about another half an hour until I finally saw my food was coming. While I was waiting for such a long time in the empty but noisy room, the bar tender was not friendly either. I really wanted to leave for a different restaurant, but she retained my credit card immediately after I placed an order and I could not leave. I eventually got my food more than half an hour later. Throughout the whole time, no one came to ask me whether I need anything else. The bar tender was obviously not attentive. Each time I had to ask her for the menu or request to check out. Very disappointed. The sushi chef upstairs was good and the sushi tastes good. Therefore, this could be a place for takeout, not eat in, definitely not at the bar with that bar tender at least. read more

The best sushi on the eastern seaboard. I've traveled from ny down to fl many times and have been to countless sushi restaurants. But this has got to be one of Baltimores best kept secrets. Absolutely deliciously addictive. They have a wide range of sushi more than I've ever experienced and the ninja roll....THE NINJA ROLL!!!!!! SO GOOOD! The staffs very friendly, the atmosphere is very comfortable(I always try to get the window seat people watching + sushi=Good times) but this place is a must everything is beautifully laid out and the quality is superb. Aloha Sushi has excellent food. My co workers and I have lunch here often. Today we ordered a specialty roll which, we ordered over the phone but once we arrived we decided to dine in. The staff member refused to let us eat there because it was a take out order, we did not understand and the only explanation he offered was that's our policy. Well we were all confused and almost walked out, then the nice gentleman who prepared our rolls asked us to have a seat and that he would place our food on plates. the staff member still said no . the gentleman offered us seats and served us our food. the manager came over later and explained that Aloha is in a college area and that they are not Chipotle, You can't just order take out then sit here without paying gratuity. Well we specifically asked the staff member if that were the issue, to please add to our check. We sat and ate our lunch it was obvious that we were not wanted. we finished our food and gave our gratuity to the nice gentleman who prepared our food. I really enjoy their food, however I will not patronize them again they have awful customer service. read more

Been going there for almost 10 years and that's where it stops. It used to be a fun place to hang out after work or to meet up with friends. Good food, great atmosphere but ever since the new management took over it's been crap. Servers are snobby and unprofessional. They never smile or give you eye contact. The sushi chefs are cool. If you decide to call for takeout be prepared for an impatient and uncomfortable phone call. There's also this young asian woman that I believe to be related to the owners. She is very arrogant and obnoxious. Her customer service skills are horrible and you can tell she only has the job because it's a family business, anywhere else she would have been fired. I went from going there weekly to stopping in to pick up sushi on my way home from work and now I stop going completely. It's very unfortunate because they have great sushi but there are so many other places that have it as well. If you're new to this place or only been going for a couple of years you probably couldn't tell but for someone who have been going there like I have you can tell the place has gone to crap. read more

Being new to Baltimore we wanted to find a good neighborhood sushi place we could walk to. We love us some good sushi and were excited to have came across Aloha Sushi. Boy were we wrong. First visit last weekend was good. Sushi rolls were tasty and not too overly packed so you can pop a piece in your mouth without it falling into pieces. So we decided to have lunch there a few days later. Since the first visit was a positive one, we decided to get down to business and order sashimi. Who needs all that rice to get in the way of great fish! To our surprise the sushi chef refused to let us order a sashimi platter of just hamachi and salmon. We offered to pay extra as those fish are usually more costly. No, he refused and recommended we order some rice bowl with fish on top. Er, I don't want all that rice and I don't want to order a sashimi platter with fish that I don't like that he gets to choose for me. No Thanks. Two stars because the rolls were good. But definitely never returning. We will be getting our sushi fix at another neighborhood sushi place. read more

We decided on this restaurant due to their menu listed on yelp. My main goal was the spam musabi. We were seated quickly despite being 5:30 PM on a Friday. Only 3 tables were occupied and the staff seemed mainly focused on the television and conversing. We were asked what we would like, if anything in addition to water, both ordered hot green tea, and never received the previously offered water. I asked about the spam musabi not being on the menu and was given an excuse that it must have been an old listing that "someone" should update. When I pointed out that was the main reason we chose the location it was met with indifference. Moving on, we ordered an octopus salad and a seaweed salad. Wife reports the octopus was good, I was never given my seaweed salad. We ordered several rolls and tamago. The tamago had a very dense fishy taste like it was made days ago and stored with seafood. The rolls were okay, but nothing special. Honestly I have had comparable at Wegman's, which is good for Wegman's, but not so great for a sushi bar. I was a regular here for several years. This last experience was a severe disappointment and I will never be back. You should remember you are in the customer service industry. I should not have had to call three times and come in person twice to get my double charged credit card refunded. Also, at that point you should have been at least apologetic about causing me so much trouble not to mention charging me twice. This is what you should of said "I am so sorry we caused you so much trouble." or offer a refund for such an embarrassing episode. Instead to be snarky, wait until my third call and complaint to take action, make excuses about why you had done nothing about the last time I left my information, and then act like I was being rude when all I wanted was to not be charged twice for stale sushi.
