My hubby and I stopped in for a nice dinner and we wanted Italian. I remembered my friend recommended Aloy's so we headed over. We started with espresso martinis and fried calamari. The calamari was great but the espresso was not. It is the only reason I took off a star because everything else was good. The salads that come with the meal are huge and delicious and the dressing is perfect. I ordered the pasta with marinara sauce and eggplant rollatini. I loved it all even though I couldn't finish it so I took it home. Hubby ordered the angel hair with vodka sauce and shrimp with crab dish. He wished he had ordered the pasta with penne instead of angel hair which our waitress initially suggested. Always listen to your waitress He said the shrimp with crab was good. Honestly, I'm not sure he loved it. Our waitress, Holly, was amazing. She explained everything well including that everything is made from scratch. I love that!!!! The restaurant was nice, although a bit dated which is ok by me. It made me feel like I'm at an old family place. We are definitely returning!!! read more

A friend of mine Jennifer told me about this restaurant. She knows I like independent restaurants that have been around for a while and have a old style feel inside. I went to the walkway over the Hudson on the Poughkeepsie Side. The restaurant was just about a minute and a half drive from the walkway parking lot. I arrived about 4 PM. There was nobody in the restaurant yet but there were people in the back kitchen area. A gentleman came out and smiled and said hello how can I help you. I said I'd like to have an early dinner. So he brought me over to one of the nice booths near the window. The inside has a nice old town feel. Frank Sinatra was playing in the background. Perfect music for this restaurant. You felt like you are stepping back in time to the 1950s and 60s I decided to order pizza as this was recommended. Put in a ordered the large size with meatballs and mushrooms. The pizza is square not round. So it's not the traditional Neapolitan style. But it's not thick crust Sicilian. Decided on garlic bread with cheese for an appetizer . After about 18 minutes my pizza came out. It was served on two different pans. One the side with mushrooms the other meatballs. The crust was indeed very thin. But not too thin that it didn't support the sauce cheese and toppings. It was a very good proportion of everything sauce cheese and mushrooms I. Very good flavor of the sauce. It was sweet but not too tangy and didn't overpower any of the other ingredients. The cheese was tasty and the mushrooms we're just right. I enjoyed the meatball topping. My only complaint was that they could've had larger slices of meatball, they had a good flavor and you could tell they were freshly made I was talking with the gentleman who was one of the owners. The restaurant has been around since 1929. But he's owned it since 2001 They are now open Wednesday through Sunday. From 3 PM to 8 PM Wednesday through Saturday and 3 PM to 7 PM on Sunday. I came back the following week and ordered veal Parmesan hero. It was cool that day so I ordered some soup,the beef barley vegetable soup. The soup was delicious. They make everything fresh so I waited about 23 minutes to get the veal Parmesan hero. It looked quite nice when it came out. The hero was toasted perfectly. The bread was not too heavy and nice texture kind of light. The veal was very good nice and tender no toughness, easy to chew. That's a sign of good quality veal I can definitely recommend this restaurant. The atmosphere inside is very nice. This time they had an Italian singer a woman singing over the sound system. The service was excellent as well. The lady who served me her name was Jennifer. Now this is a good excuse for me to get some exercise by going for a brisk walk across the walkway and then having a early dinner. Wanted so much to like Aloy's. Stuffed mushrooms and stuffed clams are just lots of bread stuffing. No flavor. Did not like the flavor of the sauce either. When asked to take home our leftovers the waitress did not include the sauces that should have been included for my husband' fish. The additional charge for the crumbly blue cheese is outrageously high. No drink refills. Will not go back again. read more

Doesn't look like much when you first stumble across this place but man you couldn't be more wrong. This place has an old school homey Italian feel to it. It's a hole in the wall authentic Italian place. The wallpaper and entire atmosphere makes me feel like I'm eating a family meal in my grandmothers dining room. The food is wonderful and very reasonably priced. I've been here twice now and it's definitely a place I will frequent whenever I'm in the area craving Italian food specifically when I'm with family. read more

I went to Aloy's Italian Restaurant as a last resort on Christmas Eve. My mother was here from Florida and my son was going to meet us there. It's a little off the beaten path but well worth it. The wait staff was so friendly and accommodating. The restaurant was decorated so cheerfully for Christmas. The food was so good and authentic Italian cuisine. It being Christmas Eve, we ordered the fish dishes. The food is cooked fresh,.,,not frozen and reheated. We absolutely LOVED this restaurant and the people who work there. We couldn't finish it all, so "doggie bags" were requested and they obliged. Everything we ordered was cooked and served to perfection even on a busy holiday night. The atmosphere was warm and inviting. I definitely will be returning for more. The prices are comparable with other Italian restaurants in the area. I can only say Aloy's Restaurant is tops with me! read more

My fiancé, his friend and his wife went yesterday on a Saturday night. Honestly the food was definitely okay and there was nothing to complain about there, but this place was kind of gross. I had been here a couple of times before so this may have been an off night but it really bothered me. My fiancé's first beer had giant black pieces of ??? something in it. He drank it before I noticed these huge black flakes swirling around in his drink. When he asked for a new one of a different type the waitress didn't apologize or seem concerned at all. She brought the new beer, which was fine. Then on his next beer after that (even though it was a different kind of beer) black flakes again. I noticed in my second soda as the ice melted and it watered down that there were black flakes in there as well. I'm pregnant so that really concerned me. Not sure what they were or where they came from. On top of all that, none of the waitresses were wearing masks correctly or at all. Most of them had their masks completely off of their face almost the whole time we were there, and the times they did have the masks on they were being worn under the nose. While the food was okay, I think the whole experience of dining in grossed me out a little. read more

While visiting my mom for Easter weekend she suggested Aloy's since it's been discussed within her circle of friends. Coming from Brooklyn I would say we have a fair share of old school Italian joints, by Aloy's can hold their own against them. Stuffed mushrooms were phenomenal and same stuffing was used in the stuffed shrimp entree. Packed with flavor. Chicken Marsala was delicious with a thick flavorful sauce and I had the braised short rib ravioli, again excellent choice. Being new to the restaurant did not deter Holley our waitress from from making us feel welcomed. In short time we had discussed several topics from school, children and our professions to the anticipation of the Easter brunch taking place the following day. Everybody needs a place like Aloy's in their list of restaurants - somewhere you can go for a no-frills, traditional Italian dinner. It's the type of place with a lot of familiarity, both in the food you'll get, and the number of regulars dining and at the bar. There's no trendy stuff, no special-tini's, just the good basics. Regarding comments from previous reviews about the service: Within the group with whom I attended dinner, there was whispering before entering hoping we'd get one specific server and not one other specific server. 'Nuff said. As for the food - several people in my party ordered pizza and state this is their favorite place to come in the area for thin-crust pizza. They both ordered the Pizza Lina with toppings. It looked a lot like the type of pizza my dad used to make (that's a good thing). My dinner, the chicken Francese, came out exactly like their web picture - 2 palm-sized pieces of nicely breaded chicken, tender enough to cut with a fork, and with a strong yet enjoyable lemon flavor in the sauce. The pasta sides are huge (that's part of the tradition for places like this), but I don't always eat a lot of pasta, so I appreciated the option of a side vegetable instead of pasta. Tonight it was fresh broccoli, most likely lightly sauteed in olive oil. There were no complaints among any of us, though I do have friends who will not eat here any more after they ordered what they now call "Shrimp Skimpy." My only complaints would be that it took a little longer than expected for us to get our drinks, and the decaf coffee tasted weak. Neither of these were enough to detract from a very enjoyable evening, and I would enjoy coming back here. read more

The food was tasty and the servers are very nice. My only complaint was that during a time when we have to be aware of how many people are in a closed space, I felt like I was in a restaurant pre pandemic. Every booth in the main dining room was filled, as was a table between the booths. Maybe they were following capacity rules, but they couldn't have been following spacing rules. They need to utilize the other room, which was empty. I'll do takeout, but I won't be eating inside this restaurant again for a while. read more

Full disclosure: I'm 63, and have been eating at Aloy's for 64 years (Dad brought Mom their terrific thin-crust Sicilian pizza in the maternity ward when I was born). Consistently great food over many decades. Tonight's dinner was my "usual" - veal parmesan, spaghetti, salad, and a Coke, which was spectacular. The waitstaff and owners, especially Jennifer, are engaging, cheerful, and right on top of everything. Traditional Italian decor and background music sets an enjoyable atmosphere. These are troubling times in the pandemic, but Aloy's has always been my go-to comfort food, and they have never let me down. The signature square thin-crust Sicilian pizza is outstanding! I was shocked to hear about another Italian restaurant this old (1929) up here when I read Hudson Valley magazine awhile back. I knew about Milanese nearby, but I was far from impressed when I tried it. Between this and a few other Italian places--and a hell of a beer store--I decided to take a joy ride up to Poughkeepsie. After a scenic cruise via Verranzano Blvd and Brookside Ave, I was there. Aloy's certainly doesn't look like much from the outside. Just a little white house that's been converted into a restaurant. The inside has a mix of old school Italian decor, with burgandy colored walls and a long bar. In addition to the main dining room, they have a room or 2 for private parties. There were several older gentlemen at the bar eating sandwiches for lunch, some stock market program on the TV, and the owner's wife running things. She was awesome despite the demure setting. I chatted her up and stuck with my choice of a small pizza. The trip up here wasn't for nothing. This was the best pizza I've had in the Hudson Valley. Despite the history, Aloy's pies are of the grandma genus. But it's a damned great grandma pie. Their sauce is bright and flavorful, the cheese used is fresh and not overwhelmingly applied, and although the crust sags, it is very crisp and a bit flaky on the outer edge. Like a great bar pie, the edges can carmelize a bit with the cheese. Perfectly simple, well balanced, and absolutely delicious. This was damned close to being on an elite level. They also offer a marinara pie with just tomatoes and grated romano cheese. The owner's wife told me that some people even order it plain without the grated cheese. Reason for that is probably because their grated cheese is real Romano cheese, not the cheap crap that has wood pulp in it that is sometimes served, and it is quite strong. Regardless that The entire time I was here, I heard the beat of them tenderizing veal cutlets for dinner. Eventually the owner/chef came out to check on the dining room area and I talked to him too. Great guy, with a direct lineage (non-familial) going back to the original owners. I can't vouch for the rest of the food, but my family gave it a fair review. What I can vouch for is the owners, and definitely for the pizza. If you like a thin, crisp crust, don't miss it! read more

Get the Zupa! Its a big bowl of fresh seafood over linguini and red sauce. Its the perfect dish to share between two people. The salads were cold and crisp the way they should be and the thin crust pizza has been a standard there since 1929. Its delicious! You won't even wanna waste the crusts. Jennifer the blonde who works there was a total sweetheart, she took care of my mom and I, without a hitch. Love her! Even if the pizza was not as delicious as it is I'd still come back just to have her wait on me, a pure delight. read more

Here's the thing. I'm not one to bash a place but we've been here for over an hour and our waitress could care less about the status of food we've ordered. For starters, the salad that comes with the entree consisted of frozen lettuce. Cold antipasto salad had more olives and Italian dressing than meat on the plate. And by meat I mean 4 pieces of salami, 4 pieces of cheese, lots of frozen lettuce and olives. Cheesy "garlic" bread reminded me of dominos but worse. Calamari tasted like it came from the Hudson, which isn't a compliment. Almost as if it was the end of the bag that was frozen burnt and they tried to serve it to us properly. I think I heard our server mention her job more times than we saw her this evening to check on our food. An excess of take out orders when the phone isn't ringing and the dining room isn't full is ridiculous. Entrees were sub par. I cannot. The only good part about our evening was the sweet waitress that must have been there forever - thank you so much. We appreciate you. But the whole thing was a distasteful and we will never be back. read more

We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner here. 3 adults we sat, ate, and left satisfied for less than $30. Started with the fries with dipping sauce which was delicious. We split a traditional pizza which was really good and I enjoyed a Caesar salad as well. Oh and who can forget the fresh bread? Jennifer our waitress was wonderful. I enjoyed it so much more than any of those chains on rt 9 and spent half as much and no waiting to be seated. Better experience on so many levels. Support your family eateries! Five of us went to Maloy's for dinner on a Saturday night. This was my first time there. Here are my impressions. The place needs a serious renovation. The table where we were sat is in the middle, by the sliding door to the large back room. There was a very cold draft in that very spot. The tables are under lamps that are way too low and someone ended up smacking their head on one of them when we were leaving. The decor looks old and is mismatched.... The bathroom was clearly new and clean. Now to the food and drinks. I can only comment on mine. My salad was drenched in oil and balsamic, to the point where I could not finish it. My individual pizza was very greasy (more than other pizzas from local restaurants). We were never given a wine menu and I was given few options for Sauvignon blancs, but the waitress brought me a sample when she mentioned one I had not heard of before. Their cappuccino had NO foam on it and I'm pretty sure it was not decaf, as I had asked. Overall a mediocre culinary experience, at best. The staff was friendly and attentive from the moment we walked in, until we left. For 5 of us, with a couple of appetizers and 7 alcoholic beverages, no deserts, the bill came to 215, which is totally reasonable. However, considering the overall experience I would not be willing to pay much more than that. Overall: I don't plan on going back, nor would I recommend this place, but the staff is extremely friendly and the value was good. read more

We came for the pizza because that's what the reviews said. To say we were disappointed would be an understatement. Speaking for myself, perhaps I'm a pizza snob. I mean, I've been eating Pepe's Pizza and Modern Apizza in New Haven since the early 70s. I really enjoy a good pizza but, heck, I enjoy just about any pizza be it thick or thin crust, deep dish or not. This pizza I (we) did not enjoy. To describe it as similar to frozen pie you would get from a supermarket would be an insult to real frozen supermarket pies. One of my dining companions recalled that it reminded her of the pizza that Caldor used to serve at their luncheon counters (now, I didn't even realize that Caldor even had luncheon counters but that could be a repressed memory). We came for the pizza... we won't come again for the pizza. But we probably will come again to give the rest of the menu a chance. You see, my 12-year-old daughter ordered lamb chops that came out of the kitchen hot and perfectly prepared (medium-rare) served with real, tasty mashed potatoes along with a generous serving of fresh ratatouille. This dish was devoured while the rest of us jealously re-thought our choices. The little tastes of her dish that I was allowed confirmed her better decision. It's obvious that Aloy's is an old, old favorite of the locals and our server, who was friendly, efficient and unobtrusive, was proud to tell us that their pasta was homemade. As we left, I observed some pretty good looking plates being enjoyed by some of the established clientele. I think I'd like to try some of those dishes out. read more

I was really hype to try this pizza out. I thought the pizza was going to be really good. I heard a lot of good things, and they have square pizza instead of the traditional circle pizza. It definitely was not horrible. But it was not the best pizza I had either. It was just okay. I think mine could of possible been cooked a tad longer, and maybe some more cheese. Arrived with a party of 4. The waitress showed us to a table that had bleach sprayed heavily on top of it. The waitress dried it off and apologize. I ordered 2 bloody Mary's both came in a water glass and were watered down. The waitress was also attending to customers at the bar serving them drinks. The waitress came to our table and plunked down our drinks at the end of the table. We waited for quite awhile for I dinner to arrive. I ordered chicken Parma Gina. The chicken came well done burned at the bottom and covered with sauce and mozzerella. The pasta was separate. The pasta was not spagette it was ziti in tomato sauce. This was the worst chicken parm that I have ever eaten. The service was terrible. The waitress was spending most of her time at the bar servicing drinks to customers than attending to our table. All four of us felt the food was not up to par. We will not be going to Alloys in the future, because of the very poor service and quality of food we received. It appears there is a shortage of waitress's to me the needs of its customers. Everyone was just running around like chickens with there heads cut off. With the prices Aloys charges you would think the service and food would be up to par. All 4 of us felt that Aloys should step up and do a better job. read more

I was really disappointed with my latest visit to Aloy's. It was a Sunday and they had about 25 patrons. Service was a bit on the slow side, though friendly. The food nothing to write home about. I ordered a Pizza Lina which was listed as being plum tomato with basil leaf what came out was a pizza with a basically no taste sauce. For an entree I ordered veal piccata, which was nicely done however a very small portion and the sauce used on the pasta looked and tasted like it came fresh from the can. My daughter ordered the penne in vodka sauce which she really likes truthfully she couldn't eat it. Her problem was it was stringy as if they added mozzarella. Overall, this was not their best in terms of food or service. The last time I was there for an event (this past January) the food was much better. Over the years I've had much better from them I hope they return to their original level of service and food quality. The decor hasn't changed much since I was a kid going there in the early 60's it could use an upgrade. The only change I really noticed was the carpet has been removed. read more
