My whole family luvs the JCC. It's the best kept secret in LB, we spend most of our nights in the summer at the pool with the kids. The gym is upgraded yet again and is a non threatening place to work out. We've been members for over 4 years now and had two birthday parties there for our kids with great success. Many of our friends have joined. Not being Jewish has ever been a concern. All our welcome! Many of our Catholic friends from our parish have joined, and it's family oriented. Very nice facility. Staffs are all very helpful and friendly. Recently they offer EV charging, BUT there's no enforcement as regular cars are taking the spots. AJCC, if you see this, an enforcement would be really great. read more

The instructors for swim lessons are awful they are really bad w the kids impatient and negative... the lifrgaurds are ok most of them dont have a clue about kids and can be pretty nasty if the kids splash too much or something.. i agree there should be rules but theres a way to say it... One specific guy i think his name is Ralgh- is bordering on abusive he insults the kids , calls them names and yells at them. A few friends of mine heard the same all of us had to look elswehere for swim lessons since we would never put our kids in a situation like that .. the point is for their confidence to be boosted not the opposite:( the staff by the front desk is very nice and friendly.. its really just the pool thats the issue.. read more

Original review: I have my son at Kid's University which is pretty good. I find it really hard to reach anyone by phone which is very concerning. They need a direct line. I often have to try 5 times to get through to someone. The facility is clean and instruction is good Response to feedback: Erika, Regarding your personalized comment to my review, If there are cell numbers that parents can use, that would be helpful. You should give them to parents. I have never been connected to a cell. The front reception desk at the JCC doesn't have them either. Calls currently have to go through the general reception for the entire JCC then there is no general number at KidsU so you have to phone direct extensions to employees who are never at their desks because they are busy with the kids. Likewise, if I left my son with a sitter who didn't answer her phone, I would worry. Even if she were doing a good job. You should take this as constructive criticism and try to find a solution rather than attack me with a "I told you so response". Update 6/20/16 Just heard from the JCC director that based on my feedback the Kids University now has a direct cell phone line that parents can use to call. Excellent outcome. read more

I only give the JCC Center a 2 star review because of the consumer inaction of the Life Guard Staff. Also that the Director did try to resolve the issue with the aggressive actions of an employee,( Life Guard ) another incident occurred the very next day. Positive consumer interactions pool side falls short of what I call a "positive way to start the day" attitude, Why only the positive reviews are accepted is a violation of free speech. This place is truly a hidden jem. JCC is full of fun actitivites. No matter what day or what time of day, you can alway find a workout class, or fun lunch/dinner party. The pool hours are great. The gym is never crowded, and kept very clean at all times. The staff here is above and beyond. Everyone greets you with a smile. You cant help but feel wanted here. Such a great diverse family atmosphere. I truly enjoy coming to the JCC for a fun sunday by the pool or an intense morning bootcamp session. If you're looking for a great gym that has nice equipment, isn't overly busy, and isn't a meat market, this is the place for you. The JCC offers a good range of classes taught by excellent instructors. I, however, joined for the pool and am getting very tired of the struggle. It's a lovely pool, and the hours are great (unlike public pools), but every summer I mull over dropping my membership because the pool gets too warm for lap swimming and too crowded (due to the excellent summer camp for kids); furthermore, the pool suffers frequent closures due to "fecal incidents" during the months of heavy use by children. What this place needs is a second pool, so that there could be an adults-only pool. There is room in the parking lot and on the roof. One pool could be open only in summer, so it could even be a temporary pool. Then there wouldn't be so many pissed-off swimmers like me (and I am definitely not alone). read more

While the JCC is hardly a secret; they are known for their Preschool and Day Camps as well as a nice gym for a reasonable price (lots of discounts based on your employer) But also a real gem are their swim lessons. They offer group and private and the prices are fair and actually lower if you buy in blocks. We are getting much more for our money than we did at the last school. There is plenty of parking and room around the deck to sit in the shade and watch your child's lesson. Every teacher my son has had has been great. I was taking martial arts classes here. Worst thing I ever did in my life. As a result of the instructors poor choices, I ended up having to have an operation of ACL transplant. The worst part is that I was only trying to get my medical expenses recovered and they lied about what happened. BAD KARMA!!! As a result, it has been a struggle to regain my life back and my health. The JCC offers an amazing summer camp program! The staff to child ratio is low to ensure that your child is safe and well taken care of. This is a locked facility with security and check points before you get to your child. In today's society you can't get safer than this! Most importantly, the JCC is a wonderful place for your children to swim, get messy, go on weekly field trips, participate in art, Spanish, science, sports, etc. The JCC summer camp has it all! The staff and Direct, Jamare Harris will care for your child as if they were there's. We have been at the JCC for 4 years and love every aspect of it! We started with preschool and now attend their after school enrichment program and camp programs. Your child will come home with new friends, exposure to new and exciting things that they don't get at school or regular camp programs. And the best part is they come home happy, exhausted and wanting to do it all over again. We truly feel fortunate have found such an amazing program that we feel safe sending our child to and that our child enjoys and grows from. read more

I've been going here for years and have been very satisfied with the gym, pool and basketball courts. The facility is always clean, and the maintenance staff is top notch. Houston and Teresa are particularly exceptional and are always working hard. Membership is always a pleasure to deal with. Aaron and Irene are always very kind, welcoming and eager to help. I've been a member for about ten years. It's impossible to take advantage of everything the J has to offer, mainly because you can't be a toddler and a senior citizen at the same time. However, if you have family members spanning the entire age continuum, the J has programming for all of them. For Jews, it's a comfortable place to connect with the religion and with Israeli affairs in general. However, the ethnic diversity reflects the greater Long Beach area with many of the employees and members having little to no interest in Jewish life. My kids learned a lot from the warm and enthusiastic preschool teachers at the Early Childhood Education center. My wife and I took advantage of the babysitting so we could work out at the well-equipped gym. Mostly, I swim in the outdoor pool as my activity at the J now. I usually enjoy a lane to myself. All year round, when the weather agrees, I take my kids over to splash around for a while. Parking is usually easy except during weekday morning preschool drop-off. Updating my review. It's been 4 years since I was a member here. The gym area is still small but the equipment is the best I've experienced. The free weights have been cut back though. As a widowed Jewish senior I was nervous about attending programs at the JCC alone. I found the educational programs along with the water exercise classes engaging and fun. So much better than 24 or LA fitness! It is cheaper and teens 13 and up don't have to be with an adult at the gym, so if you have to work and want your kid to do something productive over the summer, drop them off here for the morning and if you live close enough, they can walk or ride there bike. The preschool here is absolutely the best! As a former teacher, and now a stay-at-home mom, I really know. Mrs. Grayson, Mrs. Salazar and Mrs. Haynes are a dynamic trio who plan superior lessons--- hands on, multi-sensory, thematic with wonderful ethics woven throughout. After hearing about the great summer camp they have, I enrolled my 7 year old. Their camp seems fine, but their after-care is horrible!! Since the camp ends at 4:00, he is in the after-care as I work. The children are all herded up at 4:00, and then placed in their "playroom" until 6:00. Two hours are too long for kids to be cooped up in a small room!!!! The only supervision is high school counselors- as far as I can see there are no adults supervising. I am shocked how noisy and unsupervised the kids are. They seem to run around for two hours- I see kids play-fighting, rolling around on the floor, and throwing balls at each other. I have told kids to stop fighting, while the high school counselor just sits and watches. There are a few male high school counselors that I think think it is funny to watch the boys play-fight. This is a dangerous situation. I do not see any indication there is a planned or structured program for this care. I called and left a message for the the head of the camp to call me back- it has been three days and she still has not called me back. My son likes the camp itself, but they really need to revamp their after-care program for me to recommend this daycare. read more

This is the first summer our family has been to the JCC. I joined because I enrolled my children in the summer camp. We absolutely LOVE THIS PLACE!! I have never taken my children to a better camp. There are really no comparisons or anything that comes close. The facility is amazing but it is the people that won us all over. From the ladies at the front desk to the directors of the camp to the counselors, these are the utmost best group of people I have ever had the fortune to deal with! The people are courteous, kind, intelligent and very adept in dealing with children (even kids who are not behaving). It is so refreshing to take my children to a camp where everyone greets you with a warm and welcoming smile and treat kids with respect. We will never go to another camp!! The great thing is that there are a variety of programs to please both boys and girls of different ages. And they swim daily. I loved the Judaic studies and Hebrew prayers (and no we are not Jewish). It was a great learning experience for my kids to learn about another religion and culture and they realized how much they all had in common. They have great exercise classes that are included in the membership, which is very reasonably priced, and in various programs throughout the center. I cannot say enough about how happy we have been here. The gym is huge and there are several little areas where you can just sit and read. I would highly recommend checking out all the amazing things they offer here because no review can cover all the activities and amenities here. read more

We have had a family membership for 6 years. It is our home away from home. Both of our children went to preschool here. They both started at other "top" preschools and we know it just doesn't get better than this. I use the gym which is clean and not crowded. We love coming to the fantastic pool for the kids to hang out and play. We should take more advantage of events. As others have posted there is some religious element but it is of the soft 'be good to others' variety. The walls are adorned with rotating artwork, often from local schools (as opposed to biblical scenes or massive judaica). The staff always treat me like their favorite uncle. We are Jewish but like both this soft approach and that half the membership is not Jewish. I don't know what the "it" factor is that transforms a community center from a place with activities to a warm, open, inviting community in itself but the AJCC has it. read more
