The food is good, as to be expected in a NYC deli. However, prices have skyrocketed, but only for certain racial and ethnic groups. In other words, I stood there online and watched them personally price things according to the people they see. As a white man, they attempted to charge me three times as much. They've lost my business. When I chose to decline the purchase and move on, the Spanish cashier made a derogatory comment about me being a white American. I will not tolerate that from anyone. I suppose they thought, because I'm Caucasian, but I'm automatically rich? Whatever be the case, they've lost my business. read more

FYI, they close at 8:00pm; too early!. So far what I have eaten there is good but they close too early and they are in a busy area! They should NOT be closing that early! I inadvertently landed to this place cuz I couldn't find the other bagel place. It looks like your typical NYC bagel shop. They have a standard menu of breakfast classics. I got a jalapeño n cheese bagel with cream cheese. I wanted nothing else. Though the dude at the counter was nice. The inside dining area was dirty. For 8am... kinda early for a place to be that dirty. So I sat down, In a little area that was clean. I saw a typed out sign that said, Spend at least $10 to sit at the table... Woooo Chile... Who would spend $10 here?!! That's tacky. This isn't a full service diner. The cashier was ok with me, but was nasty with this other customer over something dumb. My bagel was decent. I've had a few breakfast sandwiches from here before. Today I ordered an everything bagel with veggie cream cheese and it was NOT what New York is about!! So little cream cheese and the bagel wasn't fresh - for $5 this is a rip off!! The service is fast and they are quick to take care of the morning rush but for the price of the bagels they should be a better quality! Having recently started a job in Manhattan where I start work at 6 AM and need to be in the office by 5:45 AM I find myself getting off the train one block away at Penn Station shortly before 5 AM most days. Having to leave the house so early I have no time to make breakfast and find myself starving by the time I make it to the city. Al's is one block from Penn Station and they are truly the only place nearby that seems to be conveniently open that early in the morning. Even the nearby McDonald's on 7th Avenue which lists themselves online as 24 hours has their doors locked at that hour. Al's has been great about giving me an awesome option to grab a quick cheap breakfast on the go on those mornings when I'm on the fly and really need it. They have a full array of all the usual stuff you would find at any NYC bagel shop such as a variety of bagels, spreads, salads, coffee, as well as hot breakfast items (eggs, bacon, sausage) ready to be served. I usually go with the a sausage, egg and cheese on a bagel and it's always hot, tasty, ready in a couple of minutes, and at $4 the price in NYC can't be beat where I've paid close to $10 for a similar sandwich at bigger name bagel shops. The employees are always very nice and make it point to remember their customers and their regular orders and the man behind counter knew me after I had only been going there for 2 days! I don't really understand the low reviews for this place that I'm seeing in general from a lot of people. For what it is the price and quality and service are pretty good and they even have a seating area if you wanted to stay to eat your food which a lot of places don't. It's the kind of place that long time locals will say is legendary...surviving the pandemic and being on 7th Ave between 34th and 35th for the long run is definitely the kind of things legends are made of. However, when it comes to the food. It's average to pretty good at best. They aren't going to win any awards but they'll win a hungry lunch time customer looking for hot food. I worked across the street and would pop in for sandwiches and fries every so often. The chicken is always juicy and never dry...a rare plus in consistency for delis. I appreciate that. The service is also pretty good. They're not the type of impatient NYers that treat you like you should've known exactly what you wanted before you walked in the place.
