Awesome experience my first time! Excellent, friendly customer service and delicious pizza at a great price! Highly recommend the lunch special, it's all you'll need because the slices are HUGE!

Shoutout to our local community heroes! We have a love for good pizza! We are proud to say we found a great pie! Our standard pizza is double pepperoni and extra cheese. This pizza has great cheese pull and the crust is a perfect toasty base! We get the meatballs for our appetizer. The marinara sauce is balanced and delicious. The mozzarella is a lovely melty indulgence atop these huge meatballs! The meatballs have a soft and tender texture that makes them easy to enjoy. I have to caution myself to wait a bit for the pizza to cool down before engaging in my first bite! I am almost the queen of pizza burns. I Love this pizza enough to crave it! The staff is very friendly, welcoming, and personable. The music is like a 80's flashback... so that is so cool! Clean venue and easy parking!

Als pizza is definitely some of the best pizza in Jacksonville. This location in particular is very clean with nice friendly staff. The pizza, calamari and mozzarella sticks are my go to!

Go to V Pizza!!!!! Totally killer pizza and worth the drive. Best by far in JAX! See my review.

The pizza is always great, perfect crust. The mozzarella sticks - very comparable to Arby's except $10. The salad - not much more than lettuce but small and expensive. Stromboli - not impressive. Haven't tried the pasta yet! The girls working are always sweet but the manager guy always seems annoyed especially if you use coupons but it's not like I'm dining in so I don't care. The restaurant itself always smells bad or like stinky cleaning products so not sure what's up with that.

    Al's Pilsner is good too

The food and the service is always excellent at Al 's and the ambience as well! Their beer is good too!

    Pubes on pizza

Would not eat here. Really enjoyed it when I first started going then service and quality went down hill. I ordered a pizza when friends came to town and it was covered in pubes. I reached out to them and they absolutely did not care. They get orders wrong all the time and do nothing to fix it. Better pizza in Jax and way better service else where.

The AL's I visited was on Philip's highway but this review can serve to shed light on both this location and the one in the Riverside area. The booths and tables are tight. I understand a restaurant wanting to maximize capacity but when a customer is squeezed into a table or booth and feels like the table beside her is less than an arms distance away, it's difficult to hear your company or talk about anything juicy. No complaints with the pizza but then again, it's really hard to find fault with pizza. But the spaghetti is a sad dish. In one word.... bland. This is an Italian restaurant. There needs to be some fresh herbs, some quality pasta, and some sauce that doesn't taste like it's out of a bottle. If I wanted that, I'd make my own horrible spaghetti at home. Sticky. The tables and booths always have a sticky feeling to them. It kinda grosses me out and I can't say for sure but I feel like my feeling ill the next day was because I forgot to wash my hands immediately when I left the restaurant. I did enjoy the side salad; it had just the right amount of onions, tomatoes, and dressing. Our server was very accommodating and attentive. AL's has different specials during the week, so it might be worth visiting for discounted wine and a dollar slice but it's not a "go-to" restaurant anymore.

Certainly not the worst pizza in Jax but by no means the best! Since I moved to Jax in 2003 I've tried the so called "Best in Jax" three times and never was I impressed. Even after the first time in 2004 I was willing to try it again, but no luck. Now in 2022, the same, it hasn't gotten any better. In fact this last purchase of a large pizza only half was consumed & the rest was fed to our dog but she didn't even love it...ate the crust only! So my results, I will never eat at Al's nor recommend it to anyone. Sorry but not sorry, the truth sometimes hurts.

I opted for the Rachel on white (it comes on marble rye) with broccoli salad. It honestly doesn't look like much in the picture but it was so good! Just a well composed sandwich. Broccoli salad was good. I also had a giant chocolate chip cookie and it was perfect. Helpful and friendly service. Decor is eclectic and fun. Would recommend this place to anyone.

I'm Greek. And I adored the matriarch and chef Georgia. And I'm reluctant to criticize a family…read morebusiness. But I'm a foodie. And eating out now is so expensive that the meal better be worth it.   Sadly, I'm not going back to the Athenian Owl. (Even though Georgia promised to set me up with a nice Greek man.) My biggest complaints were the TINY servings for mostly overpriced dishes (especially the Souvlaki and the grilled Octopus), and the comically bad service .... Especially maddening is that a steady Greek Chorus of customers have lodged similar complaints on Google and Yelp -- all seemingly to no avail. Georgia's son George, the otherwise friendly owner, responds to each critical review with only a sarcastic "Have a Blessed Day!"  The Athenian Owl offers a big variety of home-style, traditional Greek dishes. The family launched it about a decade ago -- after opening and running for years, then selling -- the still-popular Athens Cafe. I hosted a luncheon for four. I prepared a tasting menu of shared platters (see orange menu photo), and went to the restaurant days ahead to go over it with Georgia. I prepaid $292, no drinks, tax included. I left a $50 cash tip at the table (frankly, that was kind).   Greeks are huge on hospitality, and take pride in being generous hosts. And they eat big. Even an ordinary Greek meal feels like Thanksgiving, with loosened belts and emergency naps ....  So, when skimpy platters landed on the table, I was taken aback -- and upset. Days later, I'm still upset .... I've eaten hundreds of Greek meals (was even fed Greek baby food! lol), and I have Never, EVER, seen such skimpy servings! It was like that old TV ad: Where's the beef?   BEST: -- Hummus dip w/ pita -- Saganaki flambé: fried Kefalograviera cheese. Alas, instead of a dramatic fiery show, the waitress lit only a small flame that quickly extinguished. Still tasty, but disappointing. -- Spanakopita: Spinach & Feta w/ phyllo crust. Get the entree pie, not the appetizers' triangles. But $20/slice is too high -- Grilled Vegetable Souvlaki -- Sautéed Mushrooms w/Capers: not on the menu, but it's the Riganato dish, minus the lemon sauce -- Baklava: phyllo pastry of chopped nuts & syrup -- Galaktoboureko: custard pie w/phyllo crust & syrup JUST OK: -- Pastichio: Greek lasagna. Too little ground beef. And I couldn't detect any cheese or sauce. It was mostly just noodle, ridiculous at $21/portion. The bechamel rescued it for me, but my guests barely touched it. -- Dolmades: stuffed grape leaves. So-so, saved by the lemon sauce topping. Dolmades at the Whole Foods' buffet are tastier -- and they come from a can! -- Elliniki salad: good tomatoes and vinaigrette. Tasteless Feta chunks. Overrun w/ onion. HARD PASS: -- Souvlaki: each Kebob chunk was TINY. And the serving sizes were also galling. I ordered 3 skewers of chicken ($30) and 2 of lamb ($24), and we barely got half the meat that's typically served at other Greek venues -- at like twice the price! .... I was so irked that I called Georgia over. C'mon, chicken is cheap. I've had bigger and better for 10 bucks at street food trucks.  -- Grilled Octopus: a Greek specialty, and traditionally a signature dish. I complained to Georgia again: Not only was the serving not the customary entire tentacle, but it was also the world's thinnest. What, was this the last octopus in the ocean? At $24: another rip-off. -- Avgolemono: supposed to be thick and creamy soup, with a lemony egg broth. It was thin, as if watered-down. Almost no chicken or rice. -- Lemon Roasted Potatoes: lemon? undercooked  -- Orzo "Rice": the waitress delivered this pasta side after the meal was over. Literally a "leftover," so I took it home. Blah.  Speaking of the waitress: Other reviewers here have often cited woeful service. Our waitress was nice and well-meaning, but .... She forgot the Orzo. Ditto the Tzatziki yogurt dip and pita w/ the Souvlaki. She screwed up the Saganaki flambé. She delivered the meals in the wrong sequence. She even had to be reminded twice to bring the bread basket .... What's nuts: She didn't have to write down a single dish -- it was all pre-ordered! And, she had only a few other tables. Luckily, Georgia often checked-up and pitched-in. I bumped-up a Star here for her.

I ordered from the Dynamic Duo (sandwich & soup combo) menu. I picked the Reuben and Chicken Tortilla Soup because it's been a minute since I've had either. The Reuben was good with my one critique being that I could've used a little more Thousand Island on it. The soup was good as well and not too spicy. I always order Chicken Tortilla and hope for the best because I've had it swing way past my threshold for heat but this didn't. It has a kick for sure but not too bad. My wife ordered the Hot Honey Chicken & Yolk Biscuit Sandwich. She really liked it with the biscuit itself exceeding what she expected. Like me, her only small issue with that she liked that hot honey so much, she would've liked a little more on it. That's something she knows to ask for next time though, so no biggie. We sat at the bar and service was great from everyone we interacted with. This was out third time here since they opened. My wife pointed out that she liked her first visit and this one better than the second. She had a regular platter the second time, so she thinks sticking with their specialties is the best way to go.
